Peggy Stearns
Margaret (Peggy) Rogers Stearns, 89, known to her family and many others as “Nana” died peacefully on Nov. 25, 2000, in Butte, with family at her side.

Peggy was a graduate of high school in Clendenin, W.Va., where she played on the girls’ basketball team. In 1933, she completed Mountain View Nursing School in Charleston, W.Va., becoming a registered nurse. She devoted herself to this occupation and was proud to later see her granddaughter-in-law continue in the field.
On Sept. 15, 1938, Peggy married William Cooley Stearns in Clendenin. Stearns was a minister for the Methodist Church and Peggy assumed the role of minister’s wife with the pride and grace that befit a southern belle.
They moved to Montana in 1948, traveling by train, to serve the Methodist Church. They spent the rest of their life together in Montana, serving church communities in Libby, Hamilton, Bigfork, Shelby, Bridger, Plains and Chinook, and after retiring, Havre.

Peggy was a giving, forgiving and caring woman, whose life centered around her family and her beloved pet poodle, Pierre.
For many years, Peggy knit winter hats by the box full which she donated to the Blackfeet Indian Mission in Browning. She was named an honorary tribe member for her gifts of labor and love. She was also a life member of the Eastern Star.
Peggy is survived by her daughter Anna Coe, son-in-law Douglas Coe, Butte; Anna’s father-in-law Don Coe, Plains; grandson Stephen Eric Stearns Coe and his wife Janet Richards Coe, and great-grand-daughter MacKenzie Rose Coe, all of Nampa, Idaho, and granddaughter Cari An Coe and her husband Viet Hoana, San Diego, Calif.

In the year 2000, Peggy was slated to become a great-grandmother on Jan. 26, and to attend the wedding of her granddaughter on July 3.
Peggy – “Nana” – will be missed by her family and friends who will always remember her for her keen sense of humor and unfaltering wit, which she maintained until her last days.
The family requests that memorials be made to Intermountain Childrens Home in Helena, Van Orsdel United Methodist Church of Havre, Mountain View Methodist Church or Aldergate Methodist Church of Butte.
