Jane Jensen
Jane Tangen Jensen, 73, of San Leandro, Calif., died Saturday, May 13, 2000, in Libby, while attending a memorial service for her brother Raymond Tangen.
She was born on April 12, 1927, to Gust and Julia Tangen and grew up in Southern California.
Jane began playing piano and organ at an early age, and played organ for her church while she was in high school.
She attended Pasadena Community College and the University of California-Berkeley, graduating in 1948 with a degree in mathematics.
Jane met her future husband, Peter Richard Jensen, at a dance where he was drummer for the orchestra. They were married at her parent’s home in Libby in 1949 and lived in Libby for a time, enjoying going to country dances.
They settled in San Leandro where they raised their family. They developed careers in music and played with their orchestra on weekends and for various lodges and private functions.
The Jensens also produced a record of Scandinavian waltzes and polkas featuring their orchestra.
Jane taught math classes at Alameda High School and became the chair of the mathematics department. She received a master’s degree in mathematics from Stanford University in 1972 and continued to teach mathematics at local community colleges and summer classes at California State University-Hayward.
After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was active in the Epiphany Lutheran Church where she often played the organ.
Jane was lodge musician for the Sons of Norway in Hayward and was a member of Bjornsen Lodge in Oakland, the Danish Sisterhood in Hayward, Native Daughters of the Golden West Castro Valley Parlor, and a member of the Musicians Union, Local 6.
She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers Clarence and Ray Tangen.
Survivors include daughter Janice Muzzy and her husband Lynn, Hayward; Calif.; son Richard and his wife Dianne and grandchildren Jeanne Marie, Forrest Anthony and Katie Jane, Atherton, Calif.; sisters-in-law Winifred Jensen, San Leandro, and Ilene Tangen, Libby; nieces and nephews Mary Goos, Portland; Rayetta Tangen, Teri Tangen and Wes Tangen. Libby; Ray Tangen Jr., Drummond; Sue Kasper, Tahoe, and Bonnie Skiles, Spokane.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Hospital Foundation for the emergency room.

Valda Jordan
Longtime Libby resident Valda J. Jordan, 81, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital, after a long illness.
She was born in Richland Center, Wis., on June 1, 1918, to Logan and Mary Beaty.
Valda was much loved by her family and she returned that love, never hesitating to help whenever there was need. She faced personal tragedies with a strong faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Dyle and John Beaty, sisters Alice Peckham and Ariel Wagner, sons Norman (Buck) Jordan and Bryan Jordan, daughter Carol Williams, granddaughter Corinna Peek and grandson David Williams.
Survivors include daughters Peggy Thomas, Libby, and Marie Raft, in California; sisters Kathleen Banta, Burlington, Wis.; Shirley Beckwith and Pat Clark, Richland Center; and Barbara DeVault, Phillips, Wis.; brothers Wesley Beaty, Baraboo, Wis.; Kenneth Beaty, Richland Center; Wally Beaty, Blackearth, Wis., and Steve Beaty, Carmicheal, Calif.; special niece Mary Beth Draper, grandchildren Kerri Clark, Kevin Everett, Mark Gilroy, Ken Everett, Joann Rogers, Kathy Potter, Keith Everett, Dyle Williams, Gene King, Larry Williams Jr., Pete Thomas, Tessie Jordan, Jay Jordan, Andy Stapely and Jessica Jordan and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Libby Christian Church with the Rev. Curt Hensley officiating. Local arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Alice Maynard
Alice E. Maynard, 71, of Libby, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
She was born on Jan. 28, 1929, at Havre, to John and Bertha Baker.
Alice was raised and educated in Havre until moving to Libby with her family in 1946.
She married Lloyd Maynard on March 21, 1951, at Libby.
A 54-year Libby resident, Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed gardening, canning and crocheting, camping and fishing and going for rides into the mountains. She was member of the Libby Assembly of God Church.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd in 1989; grandson Chris in 1983, and a brother, Morland Baker.
She is survived by daughters Della Schnetter and her husband Dan, Libby; Norma (Deedee) Newmarch and her husband Dave, Lakeside; Vicky Serna and her husband Cruz, and Brenda Stamper and her husband Vern, all of Libby; sons Lloyd Maynard Jr. and his wife Evelyn (Beebee) Stockton, Calif.; Clinton Maynard and his wife Catherine, Libby, and Kevin Maynard and his wife Denise, Cloquet, Minn.; sister Carrie Low, Spokane and brothers John Baker Jr., Richland, Wash.; Robert Baker, Phoenix, Ariz.; Willis (Bill) Baker, Eugene, Ore., and Vernon (Toby) Baker, Meridian, Idaho; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Assembly of God Church with Pastor Paul Wheeler officiating.
Interment services will follow in the City of Libby Cemetery.

Ray Tangen
Ray Tangen, 75, a longtime Libby resident, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at his home.
He was born to Gust and Julia Gordon Tangen on Feb. 14, 1925, at Glendale, Calif., and was raised and educated in Southern California, graduating from Elliott High School in Glendale.
He attended a technical school for two years before enlisting in the Navy in 1943, serving with the Seabees during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Ray worked as a mechanic in California.
He came to Libby in 1948, working first as a mechanic in the Ford Garage and later as a mechanic for J. Neils Lumber Company, St. Regis and Champion International, retiring in 1986 with 32 years’ service.
Ray was active in the organization and leadership of the Lincoln County Junior Fair, the 4-H Club program and the Libby Saddle Club. He was a 32-year member of the Lumber & Sawmill Workers Local 2581, and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Kootenai Valley Grange.
He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially operating his tractor and riding his three wheeler, horseback riding, hunting and fishing.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and brother Clarence.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Ilene, of Libby; daughters Mary Goos and husband Richard, Portland, Ore., Rayetta Morrison and husband Phil, and Teri Tangen and friend Dan Sharp, all of Libby; sons Ray Tangen Jr. and friend Cary McLure, Drummond,; Wes Tangen and wife Debbie, Libby; sister Jane Jensen of California; grandchildren Derrik, Kristina, Jason, Kevin, Danielle, P.J., Beth, Ashley, Danny, Justin, Kimberly and Tyler, and great-grandchild Austin.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Cal Noble officiating. A reception will follow at the VFW banquet hall.
Memorials may be made to Wings, 310 Sunnyview Lane, Kalispell, or to Libby Volunteer Ambulance, Box 777, Libby.

George Calkin
George L. Calkin, 75, longtime Libby resident, died May 6, 2000, at his home.
He was born on Oct. 29, 1924, at Loma, to Gerald and Bertha Robison Calkin.
George grew up in the Loma-Fort Benton area and attended Loma school through 8th grade. He graduated from Fort Benton High School with the Class of 1942.
He served with the U.S. Navy for three years, received an honorable discharge, and returned to the Great Falls area where he worked as a carpenter.
He married Iola Rogers in 1950 at the Methodist Church in Libby.
George enjoyed yard work, gardening, making yard ornaments and getting firewood.
Survivors include his wife Iola, Libby; sons George Calkin Jr., Molalla, Ore., and Lynn Calkin, Libby; daughter Laura Healy and her husband Scott, Camino Island, Wash.; grandchildren Pat Calkin and his wife Traci, Casper, Wyo.,; Beth Calkin, Casper, and Ryan Healy, Camino Island.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Memorials may be sent to the Libby Volunteer Ambulance.

Jay Fisher
Jay Richard Fisher, 74, longtime Blackfoot, Idaho resident, died April 28, 2000, at Pocatello, Idaho.
He was born on June 20, 1926, at Blackfoot, to Richard and Violet Fisher. Jay grew up in the Blackfoot area, graduated from Blackfoot High School and married Seretha Jones at Blackfoot on June 2, 1946.
He served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and worked for many years as a mechanic.
After retiring, Jay spent 10 years as camp host at Dorr Skeels Campground . He was recognized as National Campground Host of the U.S. Park Service in 1994. He also managed a large R.V. Park at Quartzsite, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife in October 1994, and by two brothers, Don and James, and one granddaughter.
Survivors include three daughters, Jeni Dusek, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Becky Denner, Pocatello; and Doni Welk, Soda Springs, Idaho; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister, Joy Hopkins, Beaverton, Ore.
Graveside services were conducted May 3 at the Grove City Cemetery in Blackfoot. Memorials may be made to the Dorr Skeels Campground, in care of the Troy Ranger Station.
