Clarence E. 'Pete' Charlton
Clarence E. “Pete” Charlton of Helena, 91, died peacefully at home on June 8, 2003.
He was born in Manston, Minn., on April 13, 1912, to Joseph and Alma Charlton and received his education in Max, N.D. He married Ellen Newman in Glasgow in 1941 and lived in Loring, Mont., before moving to Helena.
Clarence was a private contractor and carpenter for many years and also worked for American Home Builders and Al Sternberg before retiring in 1974. Following retirement, he and Ellen enjoyed spending winters in Arizona.
He was a member for 62 years of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Helena, a member for 55 years of the Carpenter’s Union, a member of Toastmasters, and was active as a Boy Scout leader for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his siblings, and a son, Ed Charlton. Survivors include his wife, Allen, son and daughter-in-law Larry and Shirley Charlton of Helena, daughter and son-in-law Faye and Joe Terrio of Helena and Lois Paul and companion Dave Shepherd of Lincoln, Calif., 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 13 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Doug Vold presiding. A private family inurnment was at the Columbarium Niche at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Klerence 'Chuck' Herman Rockne
Klerence “Chuck” Herman Rockne, 87, of Helena passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital on Monday, May 26, 2003. He was born on August 14, 1915, in Ingomar to Kenneth K. and Mary E. (Crum) Rockne. He was a cowboy and ranch hand and was retired from Ideal Cement. He and Jacqueline Baker were married in Great Falls on August 5, 1944.
He is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline (Jacky) of Helena; son Raleigh Rockne of Harrison; daughters Susan Winsick of Montana City and Gwen Anderson of Silver City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his twin sister, Hazel Palish of Olympia, Wash.; sister Shirley Tidd, and a brother, Kenneth Knute Rockne of Kuna, Idaho.
Graveside services were conducted on Friday, May 30, at the Mt. Green Cemetery in Willow Creek with military honors. The Rev. Dick Miller officiated.
The family prefers memorials to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, 59604. Services were handled by Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home, 650 Logan St., Helena.
Rodger W. Hall
Rodger William Hall, 45, of East Helena, went to be with the Lord on April 9, 2003, after an extended illness.
He was born in Philadelphia on May 23, 1957. He was a good husband and father and would do anything for anyone.
He is survived by his wife Susan, children Rodney and Echo, parents Roger and Diane, brothers Steven, David and Tim, and one sister, Louise.
Memorial services were held on Monday, April 14, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena with Rev. Thomas M. O’Donnell officiating.
Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice. Arrangements were handled by Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.
Betty M. Nichols
Betty M. Nichols of Helena, 85, formerly of Highwood and Lakeside, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital on March 13, 2003, of natural causes.
She was born on August 11, 1917, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to Leon and Kathryn (Vosberg) Faus. She and Marshall Nichols were married on September 11, 1940, in Wadena, Minn. She was a housewife.
Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years, Marshall, children Jeanie (Richard) Singler of Steilacoom, Wash., Curtis (Kathy) Nichols of Helena, and Sharon (John) Wichman of Salem, Ore., nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on March 18 at the First Lutheran Church, with Pastor Larry Miller officiating. Interment was in Forestvale Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.

Sidney L. Johnson
Sidney Louise Johnson, 95, passed away on April 25. She was born in Norris on March 26, 1908, to Elmer and Margaret (Mills) Babcock.
Mabel E. Tuchscherer, M.D.
Mabel Evelyn Tuchscherer died April 27, 2003. She was born in Anaconda on November 24, 1922, the only child of Walter H. and Mabelle Malloy Tuchscherer. Her grandfather, Adam J. Tuchscherer, owned and operated the Anaconda Brewing Company. Her parents owned the Tuchscherer Drug Store in Anaconda.
Curtis L. Johnson
Curtis Laverne Johnson of Helena, 75, passed away at his home on April 15, 2003. He was born on January 10, 1928, in Rugby, N.D., to Sigmar A. and Laura M. (Herrmann) Johnson.
Barbara Jean Olson
Barbara Jean Olson of Helena passed away Friday afternoon, March 7, 2003, at the Big Sky Care Center after losing a short battle with cancer. She was 60. She was born September 25, 1942, in Wolf Point to the late Oscar and Nellie Olson.
Earl 'Doc' Halliday
Earl “Doc” Halliday of Helena, 73, passed away March 14, 2003, at St. Peter's Hospital. He was born June 2, 1929, to Edward and Synva (Berryhill) Halliday in Webster County, Iowa, and graduated from Hampton High School in 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950, served in the Infantry Division during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1952.
Helen G. Kroll
Helen Grace Kroll of Helena, 78, passed away from natural causes March 12 at the Evergreen Rehabilitation Center in Clancy.
She was born Oct. 26, 1924, in Los Angeles to the late William and Hazel White. She attended schools in California. She met and married Wills W. Kroll on Aug. 22, 1945, in Las Vegas and together they returned to Helena.
Alfred L. Grant
Alfred Louis Grant lost his last argument to cancer and kidney failure.
Alfred was born August 4, 1936, in Spokane and was the eldest of seven boys born to Ronald and Retha Grant.
He spent his school years in Washington and Montana and later joined the U.S. Navy.
While still in the Navy, he married Wilma “Winkie” and together they had three children: Irvin, Sheri and Earl.
Barbara Ann Pedigo
Barbara Ann Pedigo, 60, passed away February 27, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
She was born December 2, 1942, to Lyle C. and Margaret Fanny (Wright) Goodchild in Park Rapids, Minn.
Lawrence Dale ‘Lanny’ Helfert
Lawrence Dale "Lanny" Helfert, 54, died of a heart attack at his home in East Helena on February 24, 2003.
Lanny was born November 1, 1948, in Anaconda to Larry and Billie Helfert and grew up on the family ranch on the Spokane Bench.
He graduated from Helena Cathedral High School in 1966 and from Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore., with a degree in aviation in 1968.
Opal Lenore Bourassa
Opal Lenore Bourassa of Helena, 80, formerly of Eureka, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at St. Peter’s Hospital.
