James L. Preston
James L. Preston, beloved husband, father and grandfather, 88, of Miles City, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, after complications from surgery.
Mr. Preston was born in Lamar, Colo., on Feb. 8, 1917, the son of Alvah and Josephine Preston. He was raised in May Valley, Colo., in the farming community and graduated while on the family farm.
He later went to aircraft maintenance school in Wichita, Kan.
Mr. Preston and Ruth Christine Simpson were married on Jan. 10, 1942, and soon after, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served as an aircraft riveter during World War II, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
After Mr. Preston's honorable discharge, he was employed as Prowers County Clerk and Recorder in Lamar, Colo. He then worked as the office manager for the Lamar Daily Newspaper until 1955 when he moved with his family to Miles City.
Mr. Preston went to work for the Nance and then Sullivan car dealerships as a bookkeeper until his employment at the Veterans Affairs Hospital. He worked first as a supply officer, then as payroll and agent cashier until his retirement in 1980.
He was active in the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon and Elder and assisting in the Sunday morning radio broadcasts. He is a past commander of the American Legion in Miles City and promoted the membership for those who served our country. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks Club and enjoying serving for the many activities.
In high school, Mr. Preston was a fine trumpet player, placing high in the Colorado State Music Festival. His love of music is reflected in the extensive collection of big band music, many orchestras he was privileged to personally hear when they were on tour.
Mr. Preston loved hunting and fishing and took special pride in his garden. He would tell his family stories of the early farming years when horses were used to drive the equipment for cutting and thrashing. He told of the difficult era of the 1930s depression and the dust storms that devastated so many in the rural community. Mr. Preston was very committed to his faith and his family.
His survivors include his wife, Christine, of 63 years; his sons, James Steven and Scott Preston; a sister, Nona Powell of Phoenix, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Kari Chapman of Colbert, Wash., Kayla Preston of Mesa, Ariz., Jeremy Preston of Miles City, Danielle McKay of Norwich, Conn., and Jacob Preston of St. Paul, Minn.; and a great-grandchild, Tristan Quintus of Colbert, Wash.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City. Interment, with full military rites provided by Post No. 1579 Honor Guard of Miles City, will follow at the Eastern Montana Veterans Cemetery in Miles City.

Donald Henry Cremer
Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, Donald Henry Cremer, passed away on August 15 following complications after surgery.
Born May 20, 1923 in Baker, Montana to Charles Aloysious and Emma Regina Nockles Cremer. Married Hoyland "Simi" Simison, the mother of his three children, June 23, 1951 in Salt Lake City, she preceded him in death Nov. 5, 1993. Married Patricia Sisemore on Feb. 16, 1996.
Survived by his wife; son, Don Hoyland (Maryanne); daughters, Catherine Cremer Jones (Dennis), and Carol Lynn Cremer; brother, Robert Charles (Agnes), Miles City, MT; three grandchildren, Brandi Rae Cremer, Carianne Hoyland Jones, Caitlyn Aimee Jones; step-children, Thomas Adams, Diana Gibbons, Pamela McEwan (Mark), Rick Adams (Lori), Julie Conde (Don); nieces, nephews, and several step-grandchildren.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II and retired from the United States Postal Service in 1980. An accomplished musician, he instilled the love of music in his children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to Hospice for Utah. Memorial services were Saturday, August 20, in Sandy, Utah.
Nellie Marie Shipman
Nellie Marie Shipman, 65, of Miles City died at her home in Miles City on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005.
Mrs. Shipman was born on Aug. 29, 1939, in Miles City, the daughter of Fred Henry and Martha Ellen (Martelle) Tyler. She attended schools in Miles City, graduating from Custer County High School in 1957.
She worked at the Bean Bag and later at the First National Bank, from 1959 until 1966. She and Berl Jay Shipman were married in August 1966 and moved to Southern California. Shortly after, they moved back to Miles City where she went to work for the First National Bank until her retirement in 1995.
While her sons, Curt and Craig, were playing baseball, Mrs. Shipman was active in helping out at the mother's booth concession stand. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She spent the last seven years traveling from Miles City to Baker to be able to take care of her grandchildren during the week. She loved to sit back and relax, enjoying the company of her family and friends. She enjoyed watching the planes and nearby geese in the sky.
Her survivors include her husband of 39 years, Berl of Miles City; two sons, Curt (Darla) Shipman of Glasgow and Craig Shipman of Baker; six grandchildren, Kyle Shipman, Trey Shipman, Anthony Shipman, Shelby Shipman, Darci Shipman and step-grandson, Jacob Renner; one brother, Tom Tyler of Bozeman; and two sisters, Mildred (Ken) Espinosa of Miles City and Pearl Kiel of Miles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery.

John Stone
John Wesley Stone, 72, of Miles City died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, in Huron, S.D.
Mr. Stone was born on Nov. 3, 1932, in Miles City, the son of Marion and Mary Eva Rothschiller Stone. He was raised and attended school in Miles City, then attended high school in Hitterdal, Minn.
He moved back to Miles City where he married Anna Radmer on July 3, 1955, in Miles City. He worked as a bartender at the Elks and the Town and Country Club, as a groundskeeper and also worked at the Sanitary Dairy.
Mr. Stone retired from the dairy and remained in Miles City and did God's work from then on.
He moved to Huron to be close to his family in April of 2005.
Mr. Stone loved fishing, hunting, camping, playing with his grandchildren, watching high school sports and enjoyed running.
His survivors include his wife, Anna Stone of Culbertson; two sons, John Stone Jr. (Kathleen) of Chandler, Ariz., and Frank (Maggie) Stone of Huron; one daughter, Mary Amundson (Kevin) of Culbertson; three brothers, Jim (Betty) Stone of LaJunta, Colo., Bob Stone of San Antonio, Texas, and Walter (Toni) Stone of Othello, Wash.; one sister, Virginia Mitchell of Miles City; five grandchildren, Miles Amundson, Tony Amundson, Tory Amundson, Wesley Stone and Dereck Stone; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Stone was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Stone and Mary Eva Rothschiller-Hoff; and his son, Wayne in 1998.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow at the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City.
