EMILIO ROMERO...
Emilio “Jo Jo” Romero formerly of Helena died Dec. 28, 2000, in Bremertan, Wash. He was born Nov. 20, 1954, to Emilio “Joe” and Ruby L. Romero in Butte.
He is survived by two daughters, Josi Ruby Romero and Rebecca Romero both of Bremertan; brother, Alfredo Romero; sisters, Kimberly Prouteau of Kent, Wash., Lorraine Herrera and Karen Snell both of Billings, and Hedy R. Westburg of East Helena. His parents and two cousins preceded him in death. Jo Jo, we love you and you will be missed by all.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
TOBIAS ROBERT STARKEL...
Tobias Robert Starkel, age 25, of Helena passed away in Mexico on December 30, 2 99d 000.
He was born in New Orleans, La., on March 27, 1975, to Richard D. and Judy L. (Simkins) Starkel. He enjoyed flying airplanes, snowboarding and traveling.
He is survived by his daughter, Saisha Reddick of East Helena; parents, Richard D. and Evaleen Starkel of Clancy and Judy and Gary Smith of Chatteroy, Wash.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Travis and Michelle of Wayne, Neb., Justin and Haley of St. Ignatius, Chad Smith and sister Tessa Smith, both of Chatteroy, Wash.; grandparents, Walter Starkel of Polson and Everett and Marje Tudor of Helena; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
There will be a private visitation for family. Memorial services will be conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Canyon Ferry Road Baptist Church with Pastor B. G. Stumberg III officiating. Cremation has taken place. Private family burial service will be on Wednesday at Forestvale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to God’s Love Shelter, 533 Last Chance Gulch, Helena, Mont., 59601. Arrangements and services are under the direction of Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.
DEL SUTHEIMER...
Del Sutheimer, 49, passed away Feb. 16, 2001, after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Feb. 1, 1952, in Helena to Walter “Bud” and Doris Sutheimer. He attended schools here and entered the Marine Corps in 1970.
Del married Sheila Smail in 1975, and together they had two children. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation since 194 and in recent years was the facility manager at the Palisades Dam in Swan Valley, Idaho. He loved living there where he had many close friends and was an avid fly fisherman and expert woodworker.
Del is survived by his wife Sheila, son Cole and daughter Audi, all of Swan Valley, Idaho; parents Bud and Lillian Sutheimer, Doris Sutheimer; and brother, Glen Sutheimer, all of Helena. He is also survived by stepbrother Ron Clark, of Redding, Calif. and stepsisters Donna Lamping of Helena and Lorea Dahman of Tacoma, Wash.
Memorials are asked to be sent to Teton Valley Hospice, c/o Teton Valley Hospital, Driggs, Idaho.
A memorial service will be held on Feb. 24 in Swan Valley.
MICHAEL THOMAS McNELLIS...
Michael Thomas McNellis, age 63 of Helena, went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2001, due to health reasons prior to a car accident.
Born in Butte on February 9, 1938, to Michael F. and Ann (Amnley) McNellis, Michael attended local Butte schools, enjoyed sports, liked watching some of his favorite football teams and also building racing cars with his brothers. He entered the U.S. Army in 1955 and served two enlistments, and was discharged in 1963. Michael was a long-haul truck driver, later worked in the Butte mines, then owned Standard and Exxon gas stations and a wrecker business. He was also a longtime mechanic.
Michael moved to Helena in 1969. He married Carol Yvonne Priday on June 18, 1972, in Butte, and they made their home in Helena. He has been employed at Old Trapper Cab, now known as Capital Taxi, for the last seven years. He enjoyed good artwork and loved photography; his favorite shots were scenic sunsets and sunrises. He also loved his two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one son, Larry; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Robyn McNellis, and two grandchildren, Devin and Destry McNellis, all of Helena; two brothers, Robert McNellis of Spokane, Wash., and Jim McNellis of Tacoma, Wash.; four sisters, Marjorie McNellis of Helena, Rose Mary McNellis of Butte, Barbara (Joe) Comfort of Turah, Mont., and Ginger (Bob) Toivonen of Butte; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Sherry Fillbach of Butte, Diane and Jack Nolton of Everett, Wash., Winnie and Leroy Weathers of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Don Priday of Tempe, Ariz.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Linden’s Herrmann and Company Funeral Home, 314 N. Rodney. Pastor Dick Crosby of the Hannaford Street Bible Church officiating. Burial will be at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery. Military honors will be by the Helena Area Veterans Council at the cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Hannaford Bible Church at 830 N. Hannaford Street in Helena. A memorial has been established to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604, or to donor’s choice.
Sister Mary Clare Meek
Leavenworth, Kan. — Sister Mary Clare (formerly sister Ann Rupert) Meek, 85, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth died Feb. 11, 2001, in Ross Hall, Mother House.
Mary Clare Meek was born March 22, 1916, in Denver to parents Rupert C. and Anna Marie O'Donnell Meek.
She entered the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Sept. 1, 1939, and as Sister Ann Rupert professed vows on March 2, 1941.
Sister taught history, English, Spanish and religion in high schools in Kansas; Girls Central High School, Butte; Cathedral, Helena; and in Nebraska. Sister came to the Mother House in 1990. She retired to Ross Hall in 1998.
She is survived by her cousins, including Sister Francetta O'Donnell, Leavenworth, nieces and nephews. The vigil is 7 p.m. today in Ross Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Ross Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Leo Krisl
Santa Rosa, Calif. — Leo Krisl, 90, died Jan. 30, 2002, in Santa Rosa, Calif.
A 30-year resident of Helena until 1999, Leo loved the Big Sky Country and was an avid supporter of wildlife programs.
He is survived by his son Eric Krisl of Santa Rosa, and his daughter Linda Peterson of Garland, Texas along with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services have been held with burial near his childhood home of Milligan, Neb.
William Gee
William "Bill" Gee, 76, former Flathead resident and Burlington Northern Railroad employee, passed away May 26, 2003, in Sandpoint, Idaho.
He was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Shelby to Lyle and Clare Gee. He graduated from Flathead High School in 1944, and began working for the Great Northern Railroad. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II aboard the mine sweeper U.S.S. Gavia. He married Lois Hoffman of Whitefish on April 14, 1949. They moved to Sandpoint, Idaho in 1962 and he continued to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1988. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Gee.
He is survived by his wife, Lois of Sandpoint, Idaho; mother, Clare Gee of Sandpoint, Idaho; sister, Ginger (Richard) Peterson of Carlsbad, Calif.; three sons, William (Margaret) Gee and Kenneth Gee of Newport, Wash., and Russell (Brenda) Gee of Lewiston, Idaho; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service was held in Sandpoint, Idaho on May 31, 2003.
Charles Edward Wright
Great Falls — Charles Edward Wright, 79, of Great Falls, an Army veteran, and salesman, died of natural causes Jan. 29, 2002, in Great Falls.
Wright served in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He was retired from the Con-Agra Corporation, and was formerly with Peavey Company in Minneapolis and Montana Flour Mills in Great Falls.
Survivors include a daughter, Aylett R. Wright of Bend, Ore.; a son Bill B. Wright of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister Violet Sandru of Helena; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Rose Bradley Wright, died in 1997.
At his request, no services are planned. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford & Sons Funeral Home.
Myrus Baxter Larson
Aug. 16, 1918 - May 1, 2002
Anacortes, Wash. — Baxter Larson died May 1, 2002, in Anacortes, Wash., due to natural causes. He was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Cut Bank, son of Myrus B. Larson, a grain dealer and elevator operator, and Revel R. Worley, a teacher.
The family lived in various Montana communities before Baxter graduated in 1936 from Wibaux County High School, where he earned letters in football, basketball, and track. At a statewide high school track meet, he set a running record that was finally broken by his son, Myrus. He attended the University of Minnesota before transferring to the University of Montana where he earned a law degree in 1941.
On Sept. 12, 1939, he married Camilla P. Dahl of Wibaux, who died March 16, 2001. Much of their first years together focused on rearing and educating two sons Myrus B. Larson Jr., born 1943, who died April 12, 1965, while a senior at Dartmouth College, and surviving son Stephen C. Larson, born 1947, of Anacortes, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1969 and pursues a career as a grain broker following a family tradition. Other survivors include grandsons James M. Larson of Phoenix and Scott D. Larson of Reston, Va.; a brother, Richard K. Larson of Keller, Texas; and, nieces Gretta Hoss, of Keller, and Katie King, of Thornton, Colo.
After admittance to the Montana Bar in 1941, Mr. Larson took a position as an attorney with the Lowndes Maury and Al Shone law offices in Butte, while his spouse, an experienced legal assistant, concurrently served that firm. In 1943, Baxter entered the United States Army, serving first as an infantry officer and subsequently with the U.S. Far East Military Command in Tokyo as a judge advocate officer for war crimes tribunals.
A lifelong Montanan, Mr. Larson’s personal life and public career were linked to the state’s development. In 1946, Baxter settled in Helena, when Attorney General Victor Bottomly appointed him as a prosecutorial assistant. In 1950, Governor John Bonner appointed him to head the state’s Industrial Accident Commission. In 1981, Governor Ted Schwinden appointed Baxter chairman of the state Highway Commission.
For a brief period Baxter maintained a private practice in Helena. Attracted by opportunities afforded by Williston Basin oil discoveries, in 1953 he established a law firm in Wolf Point. Through the ensuing four decades, the Larson family took an active role in community affairs, especially in support of educational programs, while Baxter participated in business and civic undertakings.
Both he and Camilla consistently involved themselves in Democratic Party political activities. They were members of the Shriners, Order of the Eastern Star and Elks. An avid student of history, Baxter accumulated a voluminous personal library and was a member of the Montana Historical Society from its inception. To begin retirement in 1985, the Larsons settled in Billings, but maintained contacts with their many friends throughout the state.
