Emery Earl Price
Emery Earl Price, a former resident of Hamilton, passed away May 29, 2003, at Mesa, Ariz., after a long illness.
Emery was born Dec. 27, 1911, to William Millard and Lilly Bernice (King) Price on their homestead near Big Sandy. The Prices moved back to Rock Lake, N.D., where the family resided until they moved to Fort Thompson, S.D.
Emery attended school in North Dakota, and graduated from a radio and television school in Chicago. On completion of this course, he returned to South Dakota where he worked in a radio repair shop.
He married Lillyan Christina Werre on Jan. 14, 1935, at Miller, S.D. They were married nearly 63 years when Lillyan passed away in Arizona on Oct. 5, 1997.
Emery worked at many jobs during the Depression, finally settling down to work for the CB&Q railroad. The family resided in Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana. The longest residencies were at Clearmont, Wyo., the Sheridan, Wyo., area, Crow Agency and Hardin. Finally he retired to Hamilton in 1974 where they resided until moving to Mesa to be near their son, Richard.
He was an avid and expert fisherman and he loved to hunt. A favorite pastime was playing cribbage and pinochle. His grandchildren and son-in-law can attest to his expertise at playing pool. Golf was an activity he took up in his retirement. Traveling south with Lillyan in their motorhome was an experience that Emery treasured. He was a member of the Masons and the Shriners for many years. The Prices' yard and garden south of Hamilton was a showplace.
Emery is survived by two sons, Richard of Mesa, and Paul of Pendleton, Ore.; a daughter, Patricia Dunn, of Lebanon, Ore.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. Donations in his name may be made to the Spokane Shrine Hospital, 911 West 5th Ave., Spokane Wash., 99204.
William Cummins
William J. (Bill) Cummins passed away at his home on Dec. 13, 1999.
He was born in Manistee, Mich., on Oct. 8, 1909, to James and Charlotte Cummins. The family later moved to Niagra, N.D., where Bill went to school. After graduation he moved to Los Angeles where he embarked on a 15-year career in show business.
He was an adagio dancer, did acrobatic work and top dancing with a quartet called `` Karels Adagio Four." They played the vaudeville stages throughout the United States, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand, and Bill appeared in several motion pictures at Warner Brothers and MGM Studios.
He then served in the Army Air Force for four years during World War II. After returning to Helena he met and married Shirley Bernasek and the two of them ran the Cummins School of Dance for a number of years in Helena. They also owned and operated the Helena Agate and Gift Shop. In later years he also worked at Capital Ford, AAA and Cummins Electric.
Bill is survived by his wife, Shirley; his sister, Eleanor Rulifson of Seattle and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services have been held. Arrangements are under the direction of Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.
James Newman
Graveside services will be held in Havre for James H. "Judge" Newman, at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Highland Cemetery, Havre. Services will include Masonic rites and military honors.
Internment of his ashes will be in the Newman family plot. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Charles Manual residence south of Havre.
Newman, 81, an Army veteran, former county justice of the peace and Whitefish city judge, died of natural causes Nov. 23 in Kalispell.
Anthony Lawrence Finstad...
Anthony Lawrence Finstad, 86, passed away at home with his family by his side Oct. 12, 2000.
Tony was born in Iowa Oct. 9, 1914. Soon after the family moved to Montana. In his teens he “road the rails” to California, worked his way up the coast to Seattle, Wash. and back to Montana.
In 1934, Tony met and married Emma Erickson in Glasgow and they then moved to Fort Peck to work on the new dam construction project. After completion of the dam Tony and Emma moved to Idaho where he helped construct the Farragutt Naval Base. The family then moved to Seattle where Tony did defense work at the Bremerton Shipyards as a welder.
After the war the family returned back to Helena where Tony’s excellent skills as a handyman launched him into his own flooring business while still maintaining his carpenters union membership. Finstad Flooring has been in the same location for 52 years at the corner of 6th Avenue and Rodney. Finstads always had a hot cup of coffee and a friendly face.
Tony loved to fish, hunt and explore the back roads of Montana with Emma. Tony always said that Montana is the best place on earth to live. Tony was a great source of history about the state of Montana and a wealth of information and sharp wit on any subject.
Tony had many friends who appreciated his humor and good nature as well as his generosity in helping others when in need. Both Tony and Emma loved to travel both in camping as well as around the world with a fair amount of time spent at their cabin in Lincoln with many of the family and grandchildren.
Tony retired in 1987 but never officially retired until Emma agreed to retire in 1992. Tony dearly loved his wife and children.
Tony is survived by his loving wife, Emma of 66 years; sister, Martha Shrock along with numerous nieces and nephews; children: daughter, Annette Finstad of Helena, son, John Finstad (daughter-in-law Bonnie) of Helena, daughter, Donna Finstad of Missoula; grandchildren: Lynnette Nilan, (Tom) of Helena, Stephen Haegele, (Debbie), of Phoenix, Ariz., Mark Haegele, (Nadine) of Kalispell, Mike Haegele, (Donnett) of Helena, Eric Finstad, (Karen) of Billings, Valerie Westfall, (Don) of Dallas, Texas, Terre Hogan, (Doug) of Helena, Mark Williams, (Sue) of Missoula, Anna Bidegaray, (Daniel) of Bozeman, Melanie Williams, (Fred Fauquembergue) of Eugene Ore., David Williams of Los Angeles, Calif., Dirk Williams of Omaha, Neb., Erinn Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; great grandchildren: Annette and Tony, (Joey) Carter, Jennifer and Adam Haegele, Rachael, Edwin, Eve and Eric Haegele, Katie, Beth and Andy Haegele, Kelli and Michelle Finstad, Daniel and Mark Westfall, Courtney and Lauren Hogan, Nicholas and Andre Bidegaray; great great grandchild, Patrick Carter. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Rachael Finstad; sisters, Julia, Thelma and Mae; brothers, Ray, Morris and Larry.
W. Wayne Jones...
W. Wayne Jones of 619 Wilder died of a heart condition Oct. 11, 2000. He was born Sept. 7., 1920, in Miles City to William and Mina Jones.
He married Ethel Anderson Sept.1, 1941. Their children are Sharon of Helena, Doug of Columbia, Md. and Brad of Honolulu, Hawaii. The two grandchildren are Dan Brent and Shauna Dagel and the two great grandchildren are Katrina and Ashton Dagel, all of Olympia, Wash.
Wayne earned a degree in Pharmacy at the University of Montana and he and Ethel had College Pharmacy in Helena for 27 years.
During WWII, he served in Europe in the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Wayne was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 60 years, as a scout and as a leader. He was a positive influence in the lives of many young people. He was creative and enjoyed his hobbies and the outdoors. Wayne is fondly remembered as a-good-natured man of incredible integrity.
Cremation has taken place and a family memorial will be at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memorial in his name be made to an organization of your choice.
Larry Rasmussen
Larry Francis Rasmussen, a devoted husband and loving father, 64, passed away on June 10, 2003, at the Peace Hospice Residence Center in Great Falls.
He was born in Havre on July 26, 1938, to Martin and Mary (Kalanick) Rasmussen.
He received his early education in the Flathead Valley, graduating from Whitefish High School. He went on to serve four years in the U. S. Navy. Over the years, he worked at Columbia Falls Aluminum Company, did carpentry work, worked on Libby Dam, owned a motel in Amanda Park, Wash., operated Rasmussen's Back-hoe Service in Kalispell, and was owner and operator of a mobile home park in Great Falls. His work was his life.
He met and married Jean Anderson Moreau in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1999.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; five children: Carrie Eystad and husband, Willie, Linda Camus, Larry Rasmussen, Jr. and wife Tami, Mike Rasmussen and Donnie Rasmussen-McLlhargey; two stepsons: Drew Moreau and wife, Wendy, and Damon Moreau and wife, Heather; one brother, Dennis Rasmussen and wife, Beverly; one sister, Marilyn Allen and husband, Ron; 10 grandchildren, Corbin, Jered, Aaron, Devin, DonTae, Natheon, Darren, Nicole, Michael and Amanda; one great-granddaughter, Carrie Ann; many extended family in Canada; seven special nieces and nephews, Kim, Kelly, Kevin, Tom, Grant, Rick, and Scott, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held June 14 at Johnson Mortuary with Pastor Dan Lydick of the Rocky Mountain Baptist Church officiating. Burial was at the Glacier Memorial Gardens with military honors by the United Veterans of the Flathead.
The family suggests memorials to the Peace Hospice Residence Center, 2600 15th Ave. South, Great Falls, Mont. 59405.
Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Mortuary and Crematory.
Frances ‘Franny’ Smith-Murray...
Our loving sister, Frances “Franny” Smith-Murray, age 66, has gone to be with our Lord early Thursday morning Oct. 12, 2000. Franny was born Dec. 13, 1933, in Helena to Hubert Frank and Wanda L. (Engel) Smith. She received her education here in Helena. Early in her life she worked as an operator for Mountain Bell Telephone. Franny remained a resident of Helena her entire life. She worked as a waitress for many years as well as working for Country Market and the Sunset Capital Apartments. She enjoyed reading, fishing, card playing and visits with her family. Franny was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William H. Smith. She is survived by her brothers Fritz Smith and his wife Rae, Larry Smith and his wife Sandy, all of Helena, her sisters Helen Betcher and her husband Don of Lincoln, Jean Whitley of Helena, seven nieces, one nephew and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Edward J. Hislop of St. Mary Catholic Community presiding. DAN RAYMOND...
Dan Raymond, 73, of Canyon Ferry, passed away unexpectedly at St. Peter’s Hospital Dec. 6, 2000, during recuperation from surgery.
Dan was born on South Rodney Hill in Helena, Feb. 26, 1927, to Daniel F. and Itha (Denney) Raymond. He attended Emerson School, Central School and Helena High for a short time.
After leaving school, he worked as a “call boy” for the railroad, set pins at the bowling alley, and did glazing work for Foley Mill. On his seventeenth birthday, 1944, he enlisted in the navy, completing boot camp at Farragut, Idaho. After further training, he was stationed in the Philippines on a LCT. He came home in 1946 and was recalled into the Korean Conflict in January 1951, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard until May of 1952. He was very proud to have served his country in two wars.
Dan worked as an apprentice glazier, then a journeyman glazier for many years. He worked for Yuhas Millwork and American Building, then as a self-employed cabinetmaker in his shop at Canyon Ferry.
Dan married Elizabeth (Betty) Mattice July 8, 1950, in Helena. They lived in Helena and Canyon Ferry all their married life except for four years when they lived in Great Falls. Dan was a member of King Solomon’s Masonic Lodge, #9 AF & AM in Helena.
In his earlier years, Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing and time spent at the cabin in Magpie Gulch. He was very disturbed at seeing Magpie Gulch after this summer’s fires, as Magpie was a part of his life since he was a baby. In recent years he enjoyed his TV and VCR in his shop and camping in the motor home at Lincoln. He created a large library of old War and Western movies. He loved all animals, especially dogs, which had a great love for him.
Dan is survived by his wife of fifty years, Betty; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen Ann and Kenneth Hanson of Melville, their son, Ky of Belgrade, and daughter Kari of Park City; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Rose Raymond and son, Justin of Canyon Ferry; sister and brother-in-law, Clarice and Gary Miller of Elko, Nev.; sister-in-law, Zona Oleson of East Helena; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Joyce Mattice of Nashville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, William Mattice of Garrison; sister-in-law, Patricia Mattice of Roundup; many nieces and nephews including Vern Raymond, Randy Raymond and Debbie Johnson of the Helena area and others throughout Montana and the U.S. His faithful dogs, Prince and Boots also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harry Raymond and favorite uncle, Clarence Raymond.
