Fern Geraldine Matt Hitchcock
MISSOULA - Fern Geraldine Matt Hitchcock, 82, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at St. Patrick Hospital of natural causes.
Fern was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Ronan to Louis J. and Hazel N. Pratt Matt. She was raised in the Arlee area. She was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
She married Leonard Hitchcock on Sept. 10, 1945. They raised four children and two granddaughters, Michelle and Tammy, in their 45 years together. They lived in the Valley Creek and Clearwater areas and finally settled in Missoula. Fern was devoted to her family. In her early years, she and her family would camp up the Jocko through the week of the Fourth of July. Fern loved to garden. Her flowers and vegetables adorned her yard. She canned and made jams and jellies yearly. She always made time to sit down and visit over a cup of coffee. She will be truly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leonard; a son, Lenny; a sister, Angela; and her bothers, Jerry, John, Joe, Bud, Bob and Wendal.
Survivors include her daughter, Leona and her husband Richard Larson of Frenchtown; two sons, Albert and his wife Julie Hitchcock of Arlee and Ray and wife Jan of Arlee. Also surviving are 10 grandkids, Michelle, Tammy, Kelly, Kyle, Lisa and husband Mark, Brian, DeRae, William, Josh and Jeff; 12 great-grandchildren, Kail, Jaren, Dylan, Cierra, Kaitlyn, Zach, Royce, Jake, Allison, Taylor, Brittlynn, Aubrey and Caden; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at Livingston, Malletta and Geraghty Funeral Home with a vigil service to follow at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Jocko Catholic Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Arlee Community Center following the burial.
Miroslaw Kubik
Miroslaw Kubik, 85, of Miles City died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in the Holy Rosary Health Center at Miles City.
Born Aug. 25, 1914, in Warsaw, Poland, Mr. Kubik was the son of Benedykt Marja and Natalya Kubik. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Poland and attended Warsaw Politechnik where he received his degree as an Electrical Engineer in 1937.
Mr. Kubik served in the Polish Heavy Artillery unit from 1939 until his arrest and incarceration by the Gestapo in April 1940. He was liberated from Sachsenchausen-Oraninburg concentration camp in May 1945 by American forces.
For five years, he served as instructor and administrator at the Polish School of Mechanics in Lubeck, Germany.
In May 1946, he and his wife, Wanda, were united in marriage in Lubeck. Under sponsorship of Catholic Charities and Sister Fanahan, they emigrated to the United States, arriving in Miles City on May 12, 1950. They both went to work for Holy Rosary Hospital, he as engineer and later as Director of Plant. His pride in the hospital and performance at his job were hallmarks of his employment at the facility.
Mr. Kubik became a United States citizen in 1956 in ceremonies at the Custer County Courthouse.
Playing chess with his friends, photography, reading and traveling with his family in the Rocky Mountains occupied much of his leisure time. His creativity and sensitivity were demonstrated in his numerous portraits and sketches of scenes and people he encountered during his American experience. Mr. Kubik was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City.
His survivors include his daughter, Yolanta Kubik Warden, her husband, Steven, and their daughters, Kristin and Katharine, all of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda.
Vigil services will be Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Gil Hemauer-Capuchin will be the celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Wellness Center or to charities of their choices.
David John Stickelmeyer
David John Stickelmeyer, 52, of Miles City died Thursday, July 27, 2000, in the Holy Rosary Health Center at Miles City.
John, as he was known by his friends and family, was born June 29, 1948, in Jamestown, N.D. When he was three years of age, his family moved to Miles City. In his younger years, he attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and remained in Miles City after graduating from Custer County High School.
For many years he was a common sight at the family-operated John's Cafe where he worked along with his mother, May, and step-father, John Stickelmeyer.
Mr. Stickelmeyer had a passion for playing cards and a genuine love for animals, especially cats. He was known to take in strays and provide them with the care no one else would.
His survivors include a sister, Mary Kay Borchert of Los Angeles; three nieces, Lorene Morris and Robin Bernard, both of Yakima, Wash., and Brenda Borchert of Los Angeles; five great-nieces; and one great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by his mother, May Stickelmeyer, and his step-father, John Stickelmeyer.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Mark E. Kosty
Mark E. Kosty, 41, of Miles City died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, of injuries sustained in a car accident near Broadus.
Born Jan. 1, 1959, in Miles City, he was a son of Ernest and Thelma Spear Kosty. He grew up and attended schools in Miles City. While in high school, he worked for his father at Montana Souvenir and for the Red Rock Supper Club as a cook. He was married and later divorced.
In 1985, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Grenada, receiving his Honorary Discharge in 1986. He moved to Kansas City, Kan., and attended DeVry Institute of Technology, graduating with honors.
After graduation, he began work for Sprint, living in Kansas City for three years before he returned to Miles City.
Mr. Kosty enjoyed golfing, traveling and fishing with his grandmother. He also enjoyed spending several winters with his mother in Arizona. He loved his children, nieces, nephews, cousins and two special ladies, his Aunt Emma Zawada and Flora Rask.
His survivors include his his mother of Miles City; four children, Shawn and Melissa Kosty of Atlanta, Ga., Breanna and Caitlin Kosty of Belton, MI; and one sister, Lizz Pamulapati of Lynchburg, Va.
He was preceded in death by his father; and infant daughter, Morgan Kosty; and his grandparents.
Cremation has taken place in the Bullis-Graves Eastern Montana Crematory. Memorial funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, in the First Lutheran Church. The Rev. Steven Rice will officiate. Private family burial will follow in the Custer County Cemetery.
