ROBERTA HARDING
ST. IGNATIUS -- Roberta Ann Harding (formerly Roberta Ann Powell), 67, died on Dec. 1, 2005. Ann was born on Sept. 3, 1938, in Wareham, Mass., to Merle and Elizabeth Harris. Ann moved to Montana in the early 1960s where she met and married Jess Harding. Grandma Ann's greatest accomplishment was her family. Grandma loved to sew and do wood working crafts. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her brother George Harris and her husband Jess Harding. Ann is survived by her brothers Carl Harris, Buzzy Harris and Paul Harris; her sisters Dolly Harris and Erlene Norman; her son John Harding (Amarillo, Texas); her son Chad Harding and wife Sheryl (Clinton); her daughter Tabitha Pearson and her husband Glen (Billings); her daughter Wendy Mitchell and her husband John (St. Ignatius); her son-in law, Jim Umphrey (St. Ignatius); and 12 grandchildren. A celebration of Ann's life took place on Dec. 7 at The Corner Stone Faith Center in St. Ignatius, followed by a burial service at Pleasant View Cemetery.
WILLIAM K. KAYSER
POLSON -- William Karl "Bill" Kayser died on Dec. 9, 2005. Bill was born on June 20, 1947, in Newark, N.J. He retired after serving law enforcement in Bozeman for 26 years, ending his career as the assistant chief of police. Bill moved to Polson in 2003. He loved walking his dog, Abby, and spending time cruising his boat on Flathead Lake. He was an avid outdoorsman. Bill was a well-known Montana Grizzly fan. Bill came to Montana in 1965 to study forestry at the University of Montana in Missoula. In 1966, he met his wife Peg at a concert and they were married in Kalispell in 1969. Bill and Peg moved to Bozeman in the mid-'70s to run a group home for teens. He soon joined the Bozeman Police Dept. as a patrol officer. He was known for his ability to generate revenue for the city. Bill is survived by his wife Peg and five children, Sarah and husband Will (Washington, D.C.), Erik (Missoula), Matt (Bozeman), Annie (Albany, N.Y.) and Scott (Missoula); and a brother, Bob, and his wife Julie and their children Kristi and Eric Bader and their sons, Jake, Danny and Michael Kayser. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Helmut and Eleanor Kayser. Services took place on Dec. 13 at Grace Bible Church in Bozeman. Donations may be made to the National Kidney Association in honor of Bill's nephew, Jake.
WILLIAM LITZSINGER
ST. IGNATIUS -- William Litzsinger, 65, of St. Ignatius, died from complications from leukemia on Dec. 5, 2005, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He was born on Nov. 9, 1940, in St. Louis. Bill worked as a farrier for 30 years and enjoyed cycling, running and archery. His family includes his wife, Hope; sisters Gail Garthe and husband Robert, and Connie Lombard and husband Tom (St. Louis); brothers Ray Litzsinger (Green Bay, Wis.), and Gary Litzsinger and wife Susan (St. Louis). At this time no services are planned. The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of Western Montana.
ADRIAN MCKEE
ARLEE -- Adrian Wesley McKee, also known as Ronnie Stanger, 54, died on Dec. 30, 2005, at the home of a friend in Pablo. Born on Dec. 24, 1951, in St. Ignatius, to Francis Stanger and Theresa Lozeau, he was raised in Noxon and Boise, Idaho, by his foster family. He started reassociating himself with his birth family as a teen. In 1970, he graduated from Capitol High in Boise and then joined the U.S. Army, serving until 1973. Adrian then went to school at the University of Texas, Flathead Community College, Salish Kootenai College (where he received his AA), the University of Montana and Boise State University. He worked several jobs while pursuing his education and had worked at Kicking Horse Job Corps, as a fisherman in Alaska and most recently for SKC Electronics in Pablo. He was preceded in death by a son, Ta'a; his mother; his foster parents; grandfathers Ed Lozeau and Blind Frank Stanger; brothers Mike Stanger, William Stanger, Isaac Adams, Thomas Mahseelah and Bobby Morigeau; and a sister, Theresa Piapot. Survivors include his son, Thoreau McKee (Idaho); his father and stepmother, Francis and Tiny Stanger (Lonepine); sisters Amelia and her husband Edwin One Salt, and Rhonda Quequesah; brothers Paul Mahseelah, Adrian (Melissa) Mahseelah, Injun Plant, Francis (Deanna) Auld and Frank (Glenda) Stanger; his foster family; as well as many friends, extended family members and many lady friends. A wake began on Jan. 1 at the Indian Senior Citizens Center in Polson. Funeral services were conducted on Jan. 3 at the Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Polson. Burial followed at the Decker-Beauvais Cemetery with military honors being presented at graveside.
ALICE PACKER
HOT SPRINGS -- Alice Packer, 84, formerly of Plains, died on Dec. 29, 2005, at Evergreen Healthcare here after a long illness. She was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Crookston, Minn., to Christ and Johanna Rasmussen. After her father's death in 1927, she moved with her mother, sister Katherine, and brother Albert to Inverness. Alice attended schools in Havre and Inverness and graduated from Havre High School in 1939. After high school, she attended nursing school at Montana State College and became a registered nurse. In February 1943, as World War II began, she joined the Army Nurse Corps. Alice was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of first lieutenant. Following the war, she returned to Montana State University to complete her B.S. degree in nursing.Her nursing career took her from the old Northern Pacific Hospital in Missoula through Camp Roberts, Calif.; Vancouver Barracks, Wash.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Ketchikan, Alaska, and back to Bozeman. Alice was working as an operating room supervisor at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital when she met Robert J. Packer. They were married Sept. 13, 1952. Over the next 30 years, the family lived in Deer Lodge, Forsyth, Hysham, Conrad and Missoula. She and Robert retired in 1981 to Plains. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, sister Katherine and brother Albert. She is survived by her husband Robert (Plains), son Orin (Seattle) and daughter Marne (Kent, WA). Services were held on Jan. 7 at the First Lutheran Church in Plains.
ANNALIESA PARKER
PABLO -- Annaliesa McDonough Parker, 36, died on Dec. 11, 2005. Born on August 13, 1969, in Polson, to Jr. Stasso and Louise Andrew, she was adopted by Jack and Sophie McDonough at a young age. Annaliesa was raised and educated on the Flathead Reservation and began her family at a young age. She worked as a tree planter for CSKT Forestry, a flagger for numerous road construction projects and kept busy with many odd jobs. A beautiful young woman with many interests and skills, Annaliesa was learning the ways of her people and was enjoying the drumming and singing she was involved with. She sang with Native Heart. She was preceded in death by her adoptive mother, Sophie McDonough, and natural father, Jr. Stasso. She is survived by her partner, Glen Parker (Ronan); children Michael Parker, Barbara Parker, Bobbygale Parker, Lucy Parker, Glen Eggr, Darius Parker and Roxanna Parker; brothers Lyle (Shelly Jacobs) Andrew (Elmo), Brian (Sue) McCrea (Pablo) and Lewellyn Andrew (Missoula); sisters Tess Curley (Pablo), Lisa King (Alfred Bauer) (Ronan), and Sandra (Mike) Kenmille (Big Draw-Elmo); an adoptive sister Sharon (Richard) Evans (Missoula); her firstborn grandchild who is on the way; as well as many aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Traditional wake services began Dec. 12 at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius with the rosary being recited the following day, also at the Longhouse. Funeral services were held on Dec. 14 at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius. Interment followed in the Calvary Cemetery in Ronan.
MARY A. PERSON
POLSON -- Mary A. Person, 65, of Polson, died on Dec. 29, 2005, at Evergreen Health & Rehabilitation Center here from natural causes. She was born on Sept. 27, 1939, in Tyler, Minn., to Walter and Alice Olson Truaux. She was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her daughter Wendy and her husband, Mark Fairchild (Polson); sons Scott and Paul Person (both of Missoula); nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service took place on Jan. 3 at the Grogan Funeral Home in Polson. Graveside services followed at Lakeview Cemetery.
MARYANN REUM
PABLO -- Maryann Szabo Smith Reum, 80, died at home here on Dec. 9, 2005. Maryann was born on Aug. 20, 1925, in Harlen County, KY, to Joseph J. Szabo and Mary Violet Dewey. She lived in Majestic, KY, where her father was a coal miner. At the age of 13, she moved to Long Island, NY, to live with her mother and stepfather, Andrew Polash. While in New York she worked in the Army commissary and at Smalls Department Store. This is where she met Douglas Robert Smith, who was working in the Army Air Force training at the AFTS. At the age of 17, Maryann married Douglas in East Meadows, NY, on Nov. 23, 1943. The following March, Douglas was shipped out to the South Pacific. Maryann moved back in with her mother and worked in the silk mill where they made parachutes for the Army. She later worked at the Republican Aircraft factory putting together P38s. In November 1945, Douglas returned for his bride and brought her to his hometown of Helena. In 1947, they moved to Holter Dam at Wolf Creek and it was there that they raised their three children. In 1963, Maryann was diagnosed with breast cancer and survived. In 1968, they moved to Kerr Dam near Polson. Maryann and Douglas enjoyed racing, snowmobiling, dancing and bowling. She loved to raise flowers and garden. Douglas died in 1977. She married Leroy Reum in August 1983. They made their home in Pablo after Roy sold Ready Mix. Maryann filled her yard with flowers and enjoyed keeping her place nice. She and Roy bowled for years together. Roy died in 1997. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; her sister, Rose Baker; a grandson, Sherann Strangeowl; and stepson Cliff Reum. She is survived by two sisters, Marie Jack and Elizabeth Stump, and two brothers, Joseph Szabo and Robert Szabo (all of Michigan); her daughter, Laura Loween (Pablo); two sons, Douglas Smith and his wife Mitzie (CA) and Daniel Smith and his wife (Polson); stepchildren Vern and Roxanne Reum, Wayne and Marsha Reum and Kathy Reum; granddaughters Leslie and Glenn Reum (Pablo), Jeannie and Dale Mataitas (Ronan), Maryjo and Josh Anderson (Swan Valley), Shari Cartwright (Pablo), Penny Cartwright (Pablo), Angie Eli (CA), Holly Smith (Ronan) and Daniel J.R. Smith (Polson). Also surviving are 17 great-grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; a fifth-generation great-great-granddaughter; two step great-great-granddaughters; and one step-grandson. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held on Dec. 21 at the Grogan Funeral Home in Polson. Inurnment followed at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.
DANE RUSTAD
POLSON -- Dane Norman Rustad, 85, of Polson, died at his home here on Dec. 29, 2005, from natural causes.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service was held on Dec. 31 at the Kingdom Hall on Highway 93, south of Polson.
BERTON SHULTZ
POLSON -- Berton Neal Shultz, 71, of Polson, died on Dec. 13, 2005, at his home here from natural causes. Bert was born on March 13, 1934, in Greene, Iowa, to Berton and Louise Shultz. He attended the University of Montana and received a bachelor's degree in business. Bert served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls. He was a well-known real estate agent and property developer in Missoula and Polson. He was a member of the Mission Valley BPOE. He enjoyed horses, fishing and boating, and his interests were his family and grandkids. His parents preceded him in death. His children, Beth Gregg (Salem, OR), Maureen Shultz (who lived with Bert in Polson) and Reid Shultz (Minneapolis) survive him, as do a son-in-law, Jeff Gregg (Salem), and three grandchildren, Allie, Aimee and Mason. He is also survived by his sisters, Bev Heidenworth, Honey Starkweather and Dot Watson (all of Iowa), and his dog, Mugs. No services are planned, and cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Mission Valley Animal Shelter, 239 Reservoir Road, Polson, MT 59860.
