LAVINA MAYS
MISSOULA -- Lavina Ann "Vi" Mays died on Oct. 27, 2004, at her home here. She was born on March 13, 1920, in Polson, the daughter of Minnie (Keeler) and Wright Smith. She graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1940. She married Raymond "Red" Mays on Jan. 1, 1942. During World War II, she resided in Antioch, Calif., and operated a crane in a steel factory. Following the war, she and her family returned to western Montana. She enjoyed crafts, flowers, collecting rocks, gardening, fishing and the ocean. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Herschel and Willard Smith; and a son, Donald Lloyd Mays. Her family includes her husband, Red (Missoula); son Herschel R. Mays(Arlee); three brothers and their spouses, Lloyd and Jean Smith (Polson), Tom Smith (Pablo), and Munroe and Pat Smith of Portland; a sister, Lily Campbell (Tacoma, WA); three grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family graveside services were held on Oct. 29 in Missoula. The family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice of Missoula, 800 Kensington Ave., Missoula, MT 59801.

JACK OLSSON
RONAN -- Jack W. Olsson died at his home here of kidney failure on Oct. 2, 2004. He was born at home on March 23, 1930, in Ronan, to Harald and Vida (Hogan) Olsson. He graduated from high school in 1949. From the start of World War II until 1951, he spent his summers at his grandmother's ranch at Hall. He worked as a ranch hand when farming was done mostly with horses. He always wanted a ranch of his own, but realized he wasn't physically able. In 1952 he spent a year in Bremerton, Wash., in the shipyards. In 1953 he went to work for the Northern Pacific Railway as a telegrapher, and retired in 1992. Among his achievements, he was a charter member of the Ravalli County Sheriff's Posse and was its secretary from 1962 to 1963. In 1968 he moved back to the Mission Valley, where he had lived ever since. In 1969 he married Ann Marie Schultz. They were married for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Ann Marie; children and their spouses, Robert and Lori Olsson (Minnesota), Linda Rowe Stevensville, Nick and Ellen Corcoran (Blue Diamond, NV), Theresa and Jerimy Molzhon (Ronan) and Kevin and Deann Corcoran (Palmer, AK); 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Harald and Flo Olsson (Polson) and Don and Mildred Olsson (Ronan); five nieces and nephews and their children; and his many friends. Cremation will take place. No services are planned and his cremains will be scattered.

ELIJAH ALEXANDER PEONE
RONAN -- Elijah Allen Alexander Peone, 26, died at St. Lukešs Hospital here on Oct. 10, 2004. Elijah was born to Rose Alexander and Stanley Peone on July 10, 1978 in St. Ignatius. Elijah attended school in St. Ignatius and graduated from Two Eagle River School. He also attended SKC. During his school years he was a wrestler, basketball and football player. He enjoyed fishing, reading (especially the Bible), spending time with his elders, and watching videos with his family. He loved his food and coffee. Elijah was a firefighter on the MIFF crew out of Ronan. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Eugene Peone; grandfather Wally Peone; grandparents Eli and Agnes Alexander; uncles Levi Alexander, Kenny Peone, Gary Peone, William "Porky" Alexander and Isaac Alexander; and aunts Christine Gates and Cecil Alexander. Elijah is survived by his wife, Adeline, their daughter Rozaline, and their sons, Stanley and Josiah (all of Ronan); mother Rose Morigeau and stepfather Jimmy Morigeau; stepmother Lynn Hendrickson; mother-in-law Lee Ann Nicolai; brothers Harley Peone, Richard Morigeau and Shilo Brown (all of St. Ignatius), Levi Alexander (Deer Lodge), Anthony Alexander (Ronan), Eli Adams and Josh Brown (both of Pablo), Jarvis Ashley (Missoula) and Isiah Ashley (Washington); sisters Gabrielle (Charles), Desiree Peone (Isaac) of St. Ignatius, Jessica (Eric) of Charlo and Tina (Travis) of Pablo; grandmother Bernice Peone; aunts and uncles Josie, Richard (Bernadette), Mary "Lulu," Louie, Camille and Andy (Florence) Alexander, Josephine Hernandez; Les, Howard, Doug Darrell, Marvin, Allen, Raymond and Joyce Peone; Sharlene Mitchell and Beverly Bolman; and a very large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who he considered family. Wake services were conducted at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius. Mass was celebrated on Oct. 14 in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Burial followed in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

WALDO PHILLIPS
ST. IGNATIUS -- Waldo K. Phillips was born on July 24, 1915, in a log cabin on his parent's homestead at the foot of McDonald Peak in St. Ignatius. He died on Oct. 14, 2004. Waldo and Mildred Stevens were married on Nov. 18, 1935, in Kalispell. Together they farmed, ranched, did construction work, reared six children, and extended hospitality to all. They had been married for 59 years when Mildred died on Nov. 15, 1994. Waldo loved his family, friends, all children, animals, and sports of any kind. He was a lifelong supporter of the Mission Bulldogs. Family and friends remember his love for telling stories and playing the accordion. Waldo leaves behind one brother and his wife, Dick and Edith (Arkansas); a sister and her husband, Vivienne and Jim Jennings (Kaslo, B.C.); six children and their spouses, Lorraine and Emery Johnson (Seeley Lake), Kenneth and Virgie (Arlee), Don and Rosemarie (Missoula), Ron and Carol (St. Ignatius), Lloyd and Jo (St. Ignatius), and Kathy and Dean Marquardt (Billings). Waldo is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Jean, who died at the age of six months; several brothers and sisters; one grandson; and many special friends. Memorial services were held on Oct. 18 at the United Methodist Church in St. Ignatius. Inurnment followed at the Pleasant View Cemetery in St. Ignatius. A scholarship fund in Waldo's name will be established for deserving seniors at St. Ignatius High School. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the fund at the Lake County Bank in St. Ignatius.

CHARLES RADEL, JR.
HOT SPRINGS -- Charles Walter Radel, Jr., died on Oct. 28, 2004, at the Evergreen Convalescent Center here of diabetes and cancer. Walt was born on June 16, 1926, in Spokane. He attended schools at the Antelope School in Niarada, the Hog Heaven School and in Kalispell. He quit school early and joined the U.S. Marines. He served in the 4th Marine Division in World War II. He was honorably discharged as a corporal, and was a member of the VFW in Hot Springs. He married Ida Weingart in 1958. They lived in Elmo. He served on the Elmo School Board and was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Veterans Warrior Society. He was also a member of the Salish-Kootenai Tribal Council from 1962 to 1966. He worked at a sawmill and loved working in the woods until he retired. He moved to Hot Springs in 1989. His hobbies were cooking, playing cards, hunting and spending as much time as he could with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Walter Radel, Sr. and Victoria Radel; a niece; a nephew; and a granddaughter. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Griffin (Polson); three sons and a daughter: Scott Radel and his wife, Jenny (Colorado), Mike Radel and his wife Carrie (also of Colorado), Dean Radel and his wife Debbie (Louisiana), and Heidi Radel (Polson); 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. At Walt's request, cremation has taken place and no services were held. Memorials are suggested to the Evergreen Convalescent Center in Hot Springs or to cancer research.

THOMAS SAGE
BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Thomas W. (Tom) Sage, 59, formerly of Arlee, died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease) on Oct. 15, 2004, at his home here. Born on Nov. 12, 1944, in Wild Rose, WI, he was the oldest son of Warren Sage and Clara Huffman Sage. Tom spent his younger years in Wild Rose except for his military service from 1965-68. He married Grace (Elaine) Powless on Dec. 19, 1970 in Waupaca, WI. Tom loved to travel. While truckdriving, he fell in love with the Mission Mountains and moved his family to Ronan in 1974. He was a voracious reader and a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. He loved the out-of-doors and taught his sons to fish, hunt, camp, cross-country ski, and bike. Tom taught himself to bead and became an expert artistic beader. He made traditional Oneida dance outfits for his family. He loved going to powwows, especially the Arlee 4th of July powwow. And he loved dogs, especially his dog, Ohkwa'li. His father and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins preceded Tom in death. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Grace (Broomfield); his sons Chad and family (Bend, OR), Dennis and family (Broomfield), and Max and family (Darby); two brothers, Greg and family, and Richard and family (all of Wild Rose); Joe and Melinda Pablo and family (Arlee); Rachel and Jim Osborne and family (Colorado Springs, CO); Karen Raforth (Boulder, CO); and Carol Miyagishima and family (Golden, CO); and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on Oct. 16 at his home in Broomfield. He was buried in the mountains he loved in Montana. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ALS Association, 120 Ninth Ave., Suite A-6, Longmont, CO 80501.

JEAN SENECAL
ST. IGNATIUS -- Jean Senecal, 47, died on Oct. 15, 2004. A twin, she was born on Sept. 27, 1957, in St. Ignatius to Lucy Woodcock. She was raised and educated on the reservation by her adoptive parents, Alfred Raymond Senecal and Bernie Valentine. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker who enjoyed working in the woods. She also enjoyed beading, sewing, arts and crafts, and spending time with her family and all the numerous friends who loved her. She loved taking long rides and bar hopping with her "twisted sisters." Jeanne was preceded in death by Alfred Raymond Senecal, Bernie Valentine, T.J. Sias, Martin Andrew, Lucy Woodcock, Ken Ness, Theresa Ness, and numerous other family members. Survivors include her children, Aprill Marie Garfield, Amber Rose Garfield, Alida Rae Garfield and Max Joseph Andrew; brothers Joseph Senecal and Ronald Joseph (Candy) Martin; grandchildren Patrick Lee Hammel, Damion Michael Aragon, I'isha Rae Hammer, Stoney Boyer Aragon, Syris James Aragon, Ozzy Nathaniel Aragon, Creedence Irvine, Austin Irvine, Amber Rose (Jada) Garfield; as well as numerous aunties, uncles and cousins from the Sias, Woodcock, McLeod, Andrew and Ness extended families. A wake was conducted at the home in Woodcock and the Longhouse in St. Ignatius. Mass was celebrated on Oct. 20 in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Interment was at Ronan Cemetery.

GAYLE SHENEMAN
POLSON -- Gayle Winger Sheneman died on Oct. 30, 2004, at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Norman and Ralph.
Survivors include three children, Ted Winger (Polson), Roy Winger (Seattle) and Debra Miller (Nevada); seven grandchildren; a sister, Jean Wolfe (Virginia); and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held on Nov. 4 in Polson.
Cremation has taken place and private interment was at Lakeview Cemetery.

EDWARD TRYON
MISSOULA -- Edward F. Tryon, 72, of St. Ignatius, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at St. Patrick Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 18 at the Ronan Alliance Church.
Military graveside honors followed at the Calvary Cemetery.
