SCARLETT MILLER
MISSOULA -- Scarlett Marlene Miller of Polson died on May 3, 2004, at St. Patrick Hospital here from complications from surgery. She was born on April 19, 1943, in Anaconda, to Edward A. and Elizabeth Irene (Hoehne) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Edward F. Johnson and sister Irene Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Dillard Cody Miller; two daughters and their spouses, Kristine Lynn and Colin Wolfenden (Polson) and Kandice Marie and Vance Walhood (Pablo); son Jay Jerome Thomas (Polson); four grandchildren and her faithful buddy, "Gert." She is also survived by a brother and his wife, Bill and Teri Johnson; a sister, Bonnie Davis (Anaconda); and an aunt and uncle. At Scarlett's request no services were held. The family will conduct the scattering of her cremains at a later date. Cards and memorials in Scarlett's name may be sent to Kandice Walhood, Box 686, Pablo, MT 59855.

NANCY E. RICE
POLSON -- Nancy E. Rice died on May 12, 2004, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here from a long illness. She was born on Nov. 25, 1955, in Covina, Calif., to Glen and Gayle (Schuch) Bailey. She was a college graduate of Brook's College of Design in Long Beach, CA, and earned an RN degree at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, CA She moved to Polson in 1993. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She is survived by her husband, Gary Rice; son Tyler Rice; her parents; sister Barbara Willis (Upland, CA); brother James Bailey (Glendora, CA); grandmother Elaine Curtis (Long Beach); and parents-in-law Dwaine and Tonie Rice (Hartford, MI). A celebration of life was held on May 16 in Polson. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Huntington's Disease Society or the charity of your choice.

KELLY SALMONSON
POLSON -- Kelly Dean Salmonson, 45, died on May 18, 2004, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula from complications related to an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 14, 1958, in Great Falls, to Karl D. and Cora (Snider) Salmonson. He attended school in Missoula and graduated from Hellgate High School in 1977. He worked in Salt Lake City for a few years before moving back to Missoula and then Polson in the early '80s. He started the Animal House Gym and later changed the name to "The Firm," which he was currently operating. He loved motorcycles and was an avid sports fan. He also enjoyed sailing, golfing and reading. He is survived by his parents in Polson; a sister, Kathy Salmonson and Karl Keff (Seattle); a twin brother, Kyle, and wife Sai (Polson); two nephews; and numerous other relatives. Funeral services were held on May 27 in Polson. Interment followed at Lakeview Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

JOHN SWANSON
LIVERMORE, Calif. -- John "Jack" Allard Swanson died on May 9, 2004, at his home here from emphysema. He was born in Missoula. He spent his childhood in Potomac. He was a member of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes and a great-grandson of Charles Allard who, with Michael Pablo, helped save the buffalo from extinction. Jack joined the Army and served in World War II in France and Germany. Returning to Montana, he attended the State Univ. in Bozeman. He married Pauline Davis in 1947. The couple lived in Tulsa, OK, where Jack attended the Spartan School of Aeronautics College; and in the San Francisco Bay area, where he worked in airline maintenance and supervision for United, Saturn and Trans America Airlines. The family spent several summers in England. He spent much of retirement playing golf and fly-fishing. Most recently, he enjoyed his computer and digital camera. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline; two daughters, Cherie McKinney (Palo Alto) and Faith Morisoli (Wenatchee, WA); two sons, John A. Swanson (Half Moon Bay) and Mark Swanson (Pacifica); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister Gloria Shelton (Aurora, CO). Memorial services were held May 14 at St. Charles Borromeo Church.

CHARLES WILLIAM WARD
POLSON -- Charles William Ward died here on May 11, 2004. He was born on June 18, 1916, to Bill and Alice Hawker Ward, whose family eventually numbered 15. He graduated from Darby High School in 1935. He married Elnora Herrin Baldwin of Helena on Nov. 23, 1946. He had worked as a butcher and a heavy-duty machine operator. Fishing was an important part in Charles' life, as was telling stories and playing cards over a "toddy." He also loved music and dancing. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents, nine sisters, three brothers and son Rory Charles. He is survived by his wife, Lena; daughter Ardith; son Lemont (Monty); his sister Glenrose Wylie; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned for Aug. 14, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Daly-Leach in Hamilton with a reception to follow at the Catholic Community Center.

FLORA WIMBERLEY
DIXON -- Flora Rose Davis Wimberley died at her home here on May 5, 2004, of cancer. She was born on Feb. 4, 1952, in Deer Lodge, to Glen and Margaret Davis. She married Donald Wimberley Jr. in 1969. She loved her garden and time shared with family and friends in the Avon and Deer Lodge areas. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Donald B. III, brother Skip; and stepmother Donna (Mrs. Bud Clark). She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Don; daughter and son-in-law Dawn Marie and Greg Fritts; son Dusty; sisters and spouses Margie and Harvey Gould, Pauline Mininger, Julie Martin, Verna and Dennis Lutz, Vickie and Tom Davis, Laura Clark and Lisa and Brad Shaffer; brothers and their wives, Sonny Jacobsen, Lester and Pam Clark and Lewis and Christy Clark; two grandchildren; mother-in-law Dene Wimberley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of her life was held on May 16 in Avon.

'BARNEY' BARNABY
PABLO -- Ronald Keith "Barney" Barnaby, 48, died at his home here on Nov. 19, 2004. A member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes, he was born in St. Ignatius on Jan. 21, 1956, to Howard Vernon Barnaby and Mary Alice Matt. Raised on the Flathead Reservation, he was one of the first graduates from Two Eagle River High School. Barney also attended Haskell Indian College in Lawrence, Kan., where he received an associate degree. Following Haskell, Barney had planned to accept a scholarship to Kansas University when he was in an auto accident. After many years of recovery he was ready to finish his schooling in computer science and recently had started attending Salish Kootenai College in Pablo to do so. A kind and gentle man, he had a wonderful sense of humor and is fondly remembered by his family for many things. He enjoyed his gadgets, bikes, cars, and reading westerns, science fiction and "True Stories." He was known for all his subscriptions and his hopeful winner letters. He could cook very well and made wonderful hangover soup, homemade bread, the best rice and the best Top Ramen gourmet. He enjoyed his family and thought highly of his elders, friends and whole family, especially his Uncle Joe and Watash. Barney was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents Maxima Barnaby and Alice Clairmont; maternal grandparents William Eli Matt and Margaret St. Marks; uncle J.W. Matt; and siblings Sharon Wynona Salois, Terry Salois, Ardis Rae Salois, Linda Salois, Arnold Wayne Salois and Kelly Arthur Salois. Survivors include his brothers Britton Weldon "Jude" Salois (Pablo) and Garry William Salois (Ronan); sister Duretta Billedeaux (St. Ignatius); aunts Margaret Finley Matt (St. Ignatius) and Madeline Barnaby Weaselhead (Ronan); as well as many nieces and nephews and their families, and many cousins and other relatives from both sides of the mountains. A wake was held in St. Ignatius. Funeral services were conducted on Nov. 24 at the Longhouse with burial following at Ronan Cemetery.

KEITH BLOOD
ST. IGNATIUS -- Keith Allan Hayes Blood died at his home here on Nov. 16, 2004. He was born on April 1, 1960, in St. Ignatius, and was raised by his grandparents, Pete and Emma Blood. A member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes, he went to school in St. Ignatius, graduating high school there in 1979. Keith loved being in the woods. He was a logger until Nov. 19, 1997, when he had surgery following the diagnosis of cancer (from which he had recovered). Keith was known throughout the Mission Valley. He and Rocky (his dog) used to travel throughout the valley visiting friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Jeannette Blood; his grandparents Pete and Emma Blood and Florence and Roy Hayes; an aunt, Loretta Jean Burland; Neva Crawford; and uncles Glenn, Boyd and Darrell Hayes. Survivors include his father Bernard (Laura) Hayes (St. Ignatius); his sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Greg Reed (Hemet, CA); a niece and nephew; aunts Bernie Anderson, Twila Gould, Sally Hubbard and Genevieve Kinman; an uncle, Bill Blood; as well as numerous cousins. Visitation took place on Nov. 22 at the Foster & Durgeloh Funeral Home in St. Ignatius. Graveside funeral services were conducted on Nov. 23 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

HENRY COURVILLE
POLSON -- Henry Calvin Courville died on Nov. 1, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital here. He was born on June 5, 1924, to Henry Lewis Courville and Victoria Burland Courville. After his parents passed away, his grandparents and his Aunt Anny Garcia raised him. Henry went to school in Polson until he was 15, when he and his sister, Laura, moved to Chenoweth, Ore., where he finished high school. Henry enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He returned to Polson following his discharge and went to work for Dupuis Lumber Mill at the Dog Lake site, dynamiting logs. When war in Korea broke out, Henry was recalled into the service. He was a mechanic and worked on aircraft while in Korea. He was discharged in 1951 and became licensed as a barber. He married Fredaleen Iona Marquardt in 1952. They moved to Kalispell, where he continued to barber and mechanic. The couple then moved to Washington, where Henry went to work at Boeing Aircrafts. The couple later returned to California, where Henry continued his schooling in refrigeration and electrical works. He returned to Montana and operated the Blue Bay Lodge for three years. He then helped build Dupuis Lumber Mill in Polson. He moved to Clearfield, Utah, where he worked at the Hill Air Force Base. He retired and moved back to Montana and did odd jobs until he went to work for Kicking Horse Job Corps. He also worked for the Salish and Kootenai Housing Authority as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement. Henry loved to fish, hunt, camp and ride in the mountains. He also loved John Wayne movies and building things. Henry was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Fredaleen. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Kip and Jeanne Courville (Polson), Sandy and Bob Casteel (Thompson Falls), and Linda Douglas (California); eight grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Nov. 5 in Polson. Inurnment with military honors followed at Lakeview Cemetery. Donations may be to be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children at 911 W. Fifth Ave., P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210-2472.

ARVID CHRISTIANSON
MISSOULA -- Arvid C. "Chris" Christianson, 83, of Polson, died on Nov. 20, 2004, at St. Patrick Hospital here. He was born on Nov. 24, 1920, in Kalispell, to Andrew and Lillie Christianson. Chris grew up and attended schools in Kalispell, graduating from high school there in 1940. He married Doris McDonald on Nov. 8, 1943. Chris joined the U.S. Navy and graduated from Naval Flight School in Corpus Christi, TX. He served during World War II in the South Pacific as a fighter pilot. He served as a recruiter for the Naval Reserves and retired as a lieutenant commander in 1980. He flew the first jets that the Navy had activated. Chris was a partner in Mooney Aircraft in Missoula and the city's first Volkswagen dealership. He also owned and operated Brownie's Motel & Drive In. After he retired, he and his wife spent their winters in Arizona and their summers at Flathead Lake. He was a member of the Masumola Club in Kalispell, Missoula Jaycees, Missoula Elks and New Life Christian Center in Polson. Chris enjoyed flying, fishing, hiking and hunting. He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter Cheryl Shinton on March 27, 2002; and two infant children. He is survived by his daughters ChrisAnn Boral and her husband, Joseph (Potter, NE), and Janet Warnock and Don Casey (Loveland, CO); three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Teal Kelley; brother Click Christianson and his wife, Arlo (Kalispell); sister Adella Edwards and her husband, Leonard (Boise, ID); and his special lady friend, Jake Tootell (Polson). A memorial service was held on Nov. 26 at the New Life Christian Center in Polson. Military honors and a reception followed the services. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
