Katherine E. Barss
During the mid-morning hours on Oct. 1, 2001, Katherine Elizabeth Barss peacefully passed on and her spiritual life with the Lord began. Her life began in Hazel Hill, Nova Scotia, on April 16, 1918, the last daughter of Joseph Fanning (a fisherman, farmer and spiritual man) and Harriet Feltmate. She lived with five brothers, Roy, Gerald, Alan, Erle and Beverly and two older sisters, Evelyn and Hope. As she grew older, her path led her toward a career in nursing, and she earned an RN degree from All Saint's Hospital in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1942.
While in Halifax she became reacquainted with a childhood friend, Donald Barss, who was a carpenter and musician. They were married in Canso, Nova Scotia, on Dec. 28, 1949. They began their life together in Brooklyn, N.Y., and later moved to Long Island. Katherine's children, Nelson and Audrey Elizabeth, were born in 1953 and 1956. Katherine (or Kay) maintained an active role in her children's lives while owning and managing a nurse's registry from home. The family frequently visited Hazel Hill where their children had the opportunity to experience the Canadian lifestyle and to visit family.
Kay watched her son graduate from JMU, marry Margaret R. Corell and begin a family. She watched her daughter graduate from Pace University in N.Y., begin a career in nursing and eventually relocate to Montana. Kay has been blessed with two grandchildren, Justin Emory and Kyle Austin Barss, who both attend college.
After retirement, Kay and Don enjoyed trips to Hawaii and British Columbia before moving to Rhode Island and then Virginia. She lost her husband in 1994 and continued living a quiet lifestyle in Staunton. Katherine had a positive outlook on life and was always ready to listen and offer any kind of help to her family, friends and co-workers. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by many who knew her.
