HARVEY BATY
DIXON -- Harvey Franklin Baty entered into this life on Feb. 14, 1909, in Coalgate, OK, and passed from it on Feb. 14, 2004, while a resident at the Village Health Care Center in Missoula. He was the fifth child of Franklin and Mary Baty. Harvey is the last of his eight siblings and is survived by his four children Roger (Redlands, CA), Carol (Bozeman), Janice (Newark, DE) and Douglas (Dixon); eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Harvey graduated from Montana State Univ. in 1931 with a major in sociology. He received his Divinity Degree from Colgate Rochester School of Divinity in Rochester, NY, in 1934. He began his professional career as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Montana in Helena in 1934 and married Emmalou Neffner that same year. In 1938 the family moved to Missoula, where Harvey became director of the School of Religion. He also became involved with several community development projects in western Montana. After completing his doctorate in student personnel administration at Columbia University (NYC), Harvey, Emmalou and their children, ventured to Lebanon, where Harvey became Dean of Students at the American Univ. in Beirut. After seven years there, the family returned to Montana, where Harvey founded the International Cooperation Center at Montana State Univ. - Bozeman. During this time he coordinated a "Green Revolution" development project in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. One aspect of the ICC was the Fellows program, which involved training international development professionals with the support of the Carnegie Foundation. In 1963 he accepted an appointment as Coordinator of International Programs at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. In 1968 he became director of Chapman College's World Campus Afloat, retiring three years later. Starting in 1971, Harvey and Emmalou spent their winters in Mexico continuing community development projects while hosting countless visitors. All his adult life, Harvey was clean-shaven, but when his wife fell and broke her hip in January, 2000, he vowed to never shave again. This vow he has kept faithfully. Emmalou, his wife for 66 years, died on Jan. 28, 2001. Since June of 2001, Harvey lived at the Village Health Care Center, and the family is profoundly grateful for the loving support he received there. A memorial celebration for the lives of Harvey and Emmalou will be held later this year.
JUSTIN BENOIST
RONAN -- Justin Benoist, 11, died near here on Feb. 27, 2004, of hypothermia. Local law enforcement said alcohol was a contributing factor. He was born to Phillip Benoist, Sr. and Norma Lefthand. He had attended school in Council Bluff (NE), Polson and Pablo. At the time of his death, he was a seventh-grader in Ronan. Justin enjoyed video games, music, basketball, movies, sledding, and adventuring. He is survived by his mother; brothers Christopher Lefthand, Phillip Benoist Jr. and James Quequesah; sisters Leah Benoist, Charlene "Carly" Lefthand and Melissa Benoist; two grandfathers, George Lefthand and Ben Benoist; and his grandmother Lillian Benoist (Mobridge, SD). He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Tyler Benoist; and grandmother Caroline Lefthand.
Wake services were conducted in Elmo.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on March 4, also at the Elmo Hall.
Burial took place at the Dayton Cemetery.
MARY LOUISE BLUE-SKY
Mary Louise Joscum Blue-Sky died on her wedding anniversary, Feb. 14, 2004. She was born on Aug. 15, 1942, in Arlee, to Antoine and Adeline Squeque Joscum. She was a full-blooded member of the Salish-Kootenai Tribes. She attended the Ursulines Boarding School in St. Ignatius, Flandreau Indian School and Haskell Institute. She and her husband, Leonard Blue-Sky, made their home in California's San Francisco/Oakland Bay area before moving to the Cochiti Pueblo in New Mexico, where she worked for the Bernalillo School System. Mary Louise enjoyed being with her family and doing beadwork. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Alice and Christine "Tina" Joscum, Mary Rose Cahoon and Mabel Joscum Lucero; a brother, George Joscum; and grandparents Louise Kaltomee and Adele Vanderburg. She is survived by her husband Leonard; four children and their spouses, three of whom live in Albuquerque: Dawn Ann BlueSky-Hill (Everette), Adele Blue-Sky and Holly Blue-Sky (Jeff Rey), and Kai'ti Blue-Sky and Alisha (Las Cruces, NM); four grandchildren: A.J. Blue-Sky, Trey Williams, Dai'ja Blue-Sky and Kaihua Hill; four sisters: Ursula Thomas (Missoula), Judy A. Joscum-Roy (Oklahoma City), Virginia Moreno (Ronan) and Melanie Taylor (St. Ignatius); three brothers: Alex LaFontaine (Missoula), Jim Cahoon (Pablo) and Joseph Joscum (Cutbank); an aunt, Harriet Whitworth (Arlee); her father-in-law, Cre Suina; her sister-in-law and friend, Margie Suina; a brother-in-law, Donald Suina; and a niece, Phoebe Suina. A celebration of her life was held on Feb. 16 at the St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Interment followed in the Cochiti Pueblo Ceremony, which was followed by traditional ceremonies.
EVELYN CHESTER
POLSON -- Evelyn Chester, 87, died of natural causes on Feb. 16, 2004, at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here.
She was born on Sept. 21, 1916, in Colville, WA, to Lloyd E. and Hazel Alice Godfrey.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Melvin M. Chester.
She is survived by her son, Frank Polson); brother Everil Godfrey (Willows, CA); and three grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
LILLIAN CHRISTOPHER
ARLEE -- Lillian Mary Sanders Christopher, born Oct. 17, 1920, died at her home here on Feb. 23, 2004. Lillian graduated from Ronan High School at age 16 in 1936. She married Lauren Christopher on Dec. 15, 1939. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Frank and Etta Sanders; her brother, Les; and a granddaughter. She is survived by three siblings and their spouses: Virginia Morrison (Davenport, WA), Francis and George Reynolds (Missoula), and Allen and Ruth Sanders (Kennewick, WA); her children and their spouses, Faye and Chuck Gibson (Missoula), Alison (Browning), George (Arlee), Donna and Gary Chambers (Superior), Roy (Arlee), Roger and Elizabeth (Arlee) and Rick and LouAnn (Missoula); along with 20 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Lillian and Lauren farmed, worked in the shipyards of Portland, moved back to Arlee, and then bought the Jocko Mercantile in 1958. They semi-retired to their ranch in the early '80s where they raised cattle and hay. She will be remembered for her cooking skills and her love of sports, traveling, flowers and her pets. She was involved in 4-H, American Legion, and the Arlee Senior Center. A celebration of her life was held on Feb. 26 in Missoula.
MARGARET CORDOVA
SPOKANE, Wash. ‹ Margaret Mayann Cordova, 20, died here on Feb. 22, 2004.
She was born on June 9, 1983, to Vicki LaMere and Henry Cordova in Yakima, WA. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jesus Lopez Sr. and David Cordova. Margaret is survived by her mother Vicki LaMere and Vincent (Bonners Ferry, ID); her dad, Jesus Lopez Jr. (Bonners Ferry); her father, Henry Cordova (Yakima, WA); a sister, Angelia Cordova and Duane (Bonners Ferry); two brothers, Isaac Cordova and Marcia (Ronan) and Jesus Lopez III (Bonners Ferry); her son, Avery John Cordova Doutre Jr. (Spokane); her companion, Avery Doutre (Spokane); her grandparents, Joseph and Margaret LaMere (Spokane), Juanita Vasquez (Bonners Ferry), Victoria Gonzales (Yakima); a niece and nephew and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
Services will be at a later date.
PEARL DUBAY
DEER LODGE -- Pearl M. Dubay, 90, died at the Powell County Medical Center on Feb. 24, 2004.
She was born in Gold Creek to James and Elsie Campbell on Jan. 29, 1914.
Survivors include daughter Chris Dubay (Deer Lodge); son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Lesley (Polson); two daughters-in-law, Ann "Sally" Dubay (Texas) and Mary A. Dubay (Great Falls); and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, in 1983, and son, James, in 1991.
Cremation has taken place.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 28.
ROBERT ENGLE
POLSON -- Robert D. Engle, 68, of Polson, died Feb. 5, 2004, in Lancaster, CA, of pneumonia and heart failure resulting from pulmonary fibrosis.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother Gary.
Surviving are his wife Gaye (Polson); sons Dean and wife Maria and Daniel and wife Paquita (all of Castaic, CA); five grandchildren; and mother-in-law Blanche Harding (Kalispell).
Military graveside services were conducted on March 6 at Lakeview Cemetery and were followed by a memorial service at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Polson.
