ELAINE JATEN
SALT LAKE CITY -- Elaine Papenfuss Jaten, 77, died here on July 19, 2003. Elaine was born on Oct. 5, 1925, in Corinne, UT, the daughter of Curt and Catherine Willes Papenfuss. In 1935 the family moved to St. Ignatius, where she graduated from high school. After high school Elaine worked at various jobs until the early 1950s, when she served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She then attended and graduated from Brigham Young Univ. She taught at Church College of Hawaii and Granite School District in Salt Lake City before coming to Ricks College, where she taught until marrying Howard Jaten of Spokane in 1970. She again taught at Ricks College before retiring. Elaine finished her master's degree at BYU. Preceding her in death were two brothers, John and Robert. Elaine is survived by her husband; five children, Allen (Tucson, AZ), Kenneth (Richland, WA), Ann Sibbett (San Bernardino, CA), Karen Taylor (Sandy, UT), and Sandy Huish (San Juan Capistrano, CA); a sister, Karma Cook (St. Ignatius); and three brothers, Bruce Papenfuss (St. Ignatius), Kenneth (Newdale, ID), and Joseph (Salt Lake City). A funeral was held on July 22 in Rexburg. A graveside service and interment took place on July 23 at the Pleasant View Cemetery in St. Ignatius.
MARIAN R. JENKINS
CHARLO -- Marian R. Jenkins, 70, died on July 4, 2003, at her home near here. She was born on Aug. 30, 1932, at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, PA, to LaVerne and Kathryn Decker. She graduated from Carlisle High School in 1950. She became an executive secretary to corporate presidents, a legal secretary, worked for First Bank Missoula and at the wildlife unit at the University of Montana. On May 15, 1954, she married Ron Jenkins. They recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. Marian was also a fine cook, a good seamstress and her flowers are testimonial to a great green thumb. Marian is survived by her husband, Ron; five sons and their wives, Mike and Rose (Florence), Steve, Dave and Dori, Jeff and Jean, and Tim and Carol (all of Missoula); and 11 grandchildren. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on July 10 in Missoula. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rockmont Inc., 1700 Madeline, Missoula, MT 59802; or to the Mission Valley Humane Society.
JUNE KLUGE
RONAN -- June W. Kluge, 74, died on July 15, 2003, at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Florida. She was a lifelong resident of Montana. She graduated from Malta High School in 1947 and married Erwin Earl Kluge. They farmed in the Malta area and later moved to a farm in Ronan. She worked for several years as a teacher's aide in the Ronan elementary school, where she enjoyed working with the children. She also participated in various volunteer activities. She enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, gardening and sewing and in her later years she square danced, bowled and played cards. She was pre-deceased by her son, Calvin Earl Kluge, and by her husband, Erwin Earl Kluge. Survivors include a daughter, Jean Marie Kluge and husband Peter Stuttaford; two grandchildren; a brother, George Powell; and two sisters, Fay Lake and Vivian Tisdale. A memorial service was held on July 22 in Ronan.
JAMES KNIGHT
POLSON -- James Oliver Knight, 83, died on July 31, 2003, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; four brothers; two sisters; and, most recently, by his faithful companions, Sammy and Heidi.
Survivors include his two daughters, Judy Johnston and husband Robert (Missoula) and Annette Wiese and husband Dick (Polson); two sisters, Ossa Fisher (Mansfield, TX) and Betty Wells (Panora, IA); five grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors was held on Aug. 4 in Polson.
LEROY LACOMBE
SPOKANE -- Buck LaCombe, 68, formerly of Ronan, died at his home here on July 28, 2003, from complications of cancer. Buck was born in Scobey on April 18, 1935, to Lillian and Wilfred LaCombe and was raised in Whitetail. He served in the Army at the age of 17 and was a Korean War veteran. He married Janet and had four children. He worked for the railroad, as a mechanic and for a time was the chief of police. In 1975, he and his family moved to Ronan, where he worked for the creamery, School District 30, Lake County Courthouse and an irrigation company. He moved to Spokane in the mid-1980s. While in Spokane he worked for Norco Heating and as a building superintendent. Buck was an active troop leader in the Westby Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and socializing with friends and family. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1435 in Spokane. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Louis; and daughter Lisa. He is survived by his daughters, Lola (Polson), Leta (Pablo) and Echo (Ronan); longtime companion, Verla Conklin (Spokane); sisters Lu and her husband Ben Fisher (OR) and Anita and her husband Alive Miller (Bigfork); an aunt and uncle; three grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, stepchildren and step grandchildren. Memorial services were conducted on Aug. 2 in Spokane.
KENNETH LANGSTAFF
POLSON -- Kenneth W. Langstaff, 97, died on July 4, 2003, at Home Sweet Home here of natural causes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Ruby Elshire (Billings); a stepson, Robert Kellogg (Las Vegas); several step-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Langstaff (Bridger); and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are pending and will be held at a later date.
DERWIN LOZEAU
ST. IGNATIUS -- A private memorial service for Derwin Tracy Lozeau, 49, will be held in Missoula on Aug. 9. Derwin died on July 29, 2003, at his home in Oklahoma. He was born on Feb. 24, 1954, in Pasadena, CA, to James and Nina Elizabeth Ramsey Lozeau. He graduated from Waurika High School in 1972. He worked for J.B. Hunt until medical retirement. He loved cooking, the outdoors and his childhood home in Montana. He enjoyed fly fishing on the family allotment on the Flathead Reservation. On Jan. 7, 1995, he was given his Salish Indian name of Quequeko'es, which means "Goes Far." This was done with a traditional Native ceremony in the mountain medicine lodge of elders Louis Adams and Lillis Waylett. He was preceded in death my his father, James Lozeau Jr.; his brother, Darrell Jackson; and his grandparents, Ermine Rivers Lozeau, James Lozeau Sr., and Allen and Pearl Ramsey. Derwin is survived by his mother and step-father, Nina and Harrison Houston (Waurika, OK); one daughter, Megan Elizabeth Lozeau (Oklahoma City, OK); three step-daughters: Jennifer Jennings and Lean Stone (both of Oklahoma City) and Andrea Gandy (Ada, OK); two brothers and their wives, Leslie and Becky Houston, and Gene and Krystal Houston (all of Waurika); three sisters and their husbands, Wanda (Lozeau) and Butch Felder and Melody (Lozeau) and Don Duncan (all of Lawton, OK), and Darlene Simmons (Duncan, OK); two grandchildren, Daniel Jennings and Will Gandy; and many uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. LOUIS BORCHERS JR.
POLSON -- Louis F. "Lou" Borchers Jr. died on Sept. 10, 2003, of an apparent heart attack while en route to St. Joseph Hospital here. He was born Aug. 15, 1931, in Great Falls, the eldest child of Louis F. and Leota Borchers. Lou graduated from Great Falls High School in 1949. He attended a trade school for one year before entering Montana State Univ. in 1950. He graduated with a baccalaureate in psychology in 1954. He married Caryl Wicks in Missoula; together they had three children. Lou was commissioned in the U.S. Army through the Montana State University ROTC program and served as an infantry lieutenant in Germany. He married Alice L. Dailey in Great Falls in 1984. He worked as a real estate agent in Great Falls, operated a family furniture store there, and operated a marina and developed family property on Finley Point. Lou most recently started the Flathead dock and pile barge. Lou was a longtime member of the Polson Elks Lodge No. 1695 and served as Exalted Ruler. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jean; his brother, Dean; and a son, Louis R. "Randy" Borchers. Lou is survived by his wife, Alice; three children and their spouses, William "Bill" and Brenda Borchers (Polson), Brenda and Jim Harrell (Missoula) and Christine and Christopher Burke (Colorado Springs, C)); a stepson and his wife, Richard and Tracie Scherm, and daughter-in-law, Shirley Borchers (all of Polson); nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held on Sept. 15 in Polson.
VIVIAN E. COLEMAN
CHARLO -- Vivian E. Coleman died on Sept. 12, 2003, at the St. Luke Extended Care Facility in Ronan. She was born Dec. 28, 1921, in Temple, N.D. In 1936, she moved with her parents, Stanley and Hazel Stipe, to the Flathead Valley. On Nov. 3, 1939, Vivian married to Wesley Coleman. They farmed in the Moiese Valley and later moved to their present farm in Charlo. She is survived by her husband, Wesley (Charlo); three sons and two daughters and their spouses: George and Becky Coleman (Polson), Blanche and Robert Dangerfield (Coaldale, Alberta), Larry and Anita Coleman (Charlo), Ruth and Patrick Estes (Yuba City, CA), and Harley and Sharon Coleman (Charlo); 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Dick and Agnes Stipe (Charlo); sister-in law May Stipe (Ronan); numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Fern Munson; and two brothers, Harold and Dean Stipe. Funeral services were held on Sept. 19 in Ronan. Burial followed at the Ronan Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke Extended Care Facility, 107 Sixth Ave. SW, Ronan, MT 59864.
