JOHN COUCH
POLSON -- John Andrew Couch died at his home here on July 9, 2003. He was born on June 2, 1916, to Elsie and Raymond Couch. He attended high school in El Centro, CA, and then went on to the Univ. of Southern California on a football scholarship, where he earned a bachelor of arts in business administration. John worked as a salesman and manager for IBM for 30 years, working in several cities on the West Coast. John married Betty Southworth on Dec. 24, 1939. They were married for 63 years. The couple moved to Polson in 1997. John was a flight instructor for the Army Air Force and flew a C-47 in the Aleutian chain of Alaska for three years. John's interests included flying airplanes, river rafting, horseback riding, singing with a barbershop quartet and choir, and little theater. He built a cabin at Mammoth Lakes, CA, where the family enjoyed many ski seasons. Survivors include his wife; his sons and their wives, Charles and Lynn Couch and Jeff and Jo Couch; his daughter and her husband, Nancy and Gary Teggeman; his brother and his wife, Alex and Patty Couch; his twin sister, Sarah Schoonover; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on July 14 in Polson. The family suggests memorial gifts be given to the American Cancer Society.
JAMES COUTURE
MISSOULA -- James W. Couture died at St. Patrick Hospital here on July 29, 2003, after a short illness. He was born on May 7, 1928, in St. Ignatius to Jesse and Evelyn (Murray) Couture of Arlee. He attended school in Arlee, graduating in 1946. Jim enlisted in the Army and served with the 1st Cavalry Division in Japan during the occupation of World War II. He married Catherine Rueschenberg on June 28, 1952, in Burien, WA. Jim attended both Washington State College and the Univ. of Washington, earning a degree in agricultural economics. He worked briefly with Boeing Aircraft Co. and the Bureau of Indian Affairs before spending 32 years with the former Montana Power Co. in Butte. He operated a right-of-way consulting service for 10 years after his retirement. He was one of the original founders in Montana of Big Sky Chapter 45 of the International Right-of-Way Assoc. During his retirement years, Jim served briefly on the Mission Valley Power board of directors and had been serving on the Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative board of trustees since 1993 and was currently its president. He also had been serving on the advisory board of Valley Bank of Arlee. Over the years, Jim had been affiliated with several different land-management and industry-related groups, among them Butte District BLM Advisory Board, Western Utilities Group and International Right-of-Way Association. He was a member of Mission Mountain Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing, and the Arlee Senior Citizens Center. He was a past member of the Butte Country Club, Butte Exchange Club and the Butte Chamber of Commerce. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; daughter LuAnne Couture (Boise, ID) and son Rob Couture (Arlee); three grandchildren, Monika Burrell and Jessi and Jase Couture; his sister, Jeanne Kostelic, and his nephews, Mark and Karl Kostelic (CO). He will also be missed by former daughter-in-law, Saree (Miller) Couture (Billings). Jim wanted to also include his dog, Gretchen, among his survivors. Services were held on Aug. 2 at Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory in Missoula. The family suggests that memorials be made in Jim's name to the Arlee Senior Center, Arlee, MT 59821; or to the Arlee Historical Society, Arlee, MT 59821.
TERRY COWAN
DIXON -- Terry "Lee" Cowan, 56, died on July 1, 2003, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula after a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 10, 1946, in Polson, the son of Harris "Lee" Cowan and Delphine Gunn Cowan. He grew up in the Polson and Ronan areas, graduating from Ronan High School. Lee worked at Plum Creek Lumber until he entered the U.S. Army in 1967. He served two tours in Vietnam, earning five medals; he was honorably discharged. Shortly after discharge, Lee became a merchant seaman. A back injury forced him into an early retirement. Lee married Susan Barker, on Sept. 10, 1998, in Reno, NV. The couple lived in Seattle until 1999. Lee enjoyed his many beloved pets, fishing, auto racing, good books, movies and music. He was a gifted storyteller. Lee was also a skilled electrician, mechanic and handyman. He is survived by his wife, Susan, their dog, Blu, and other pets at the family home in Dixon; half sisters, Myrna Wells (Spokane), Sharon Matson (Grants Pass, OR), and Karen (Spokane); half-brothers, Sherman Tande (Venice, CA) and Marshall Tande (Torrance, CA); a stepbrother, James Thomas (Springfield, MA); an uncle, Jack Cowan (Lake Havasu, AZ); and aunts Leona Carrington (Portland, OR), Fay Polley (Portland), Francis Morton (Pendleton, OR), Zella Wagner (Libby) and Mable Arnold (Grants Pass, OR). A military graveside service was held on July 8 in Ronan.
KENNETH W. GUNLOCK
RONAN -- Kenneth W. Gunlock died of natural causes on July 10, 2003, at his home here. He was born on July 18, 1912, in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, to Shell and Magdalene Schuman Gunlock. He grew up and attended schools in the Columbus, ND, area. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Larson, ND. Kenneth married Alma Arneson on June 25, 1936, in Bowbells, ND. They lived in Bonners Ferry, ID, for awhile, then returned to North Dakota and farmed for eight years. In 1950, they moved to St. Ignatius. For many years, they were in the dairy business and later raised cattle. They will be remembered for all the berries they raised and sold to many people throughout the valley. In the spring of 1993, they moved to Ronan. Kenneth's hobbies were fishing and gardening. He enjoyed the many dinners at the Ronan Senior Center and the fellowship he had with his many friends there. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by five brothers, Harold, Wayne, Merle, Leland and Clarence; one sister, Phyllis Holte; sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services were held on July 11 in Ronan. Memorials may be made to the Ronan Senior Citizens Center.
BRYAN D. HALL
SALT LAKE CITY -- Bryan D. Hall of Salt Lake City, formerly of Arlee, on July 9, 2003, due to cancer. He was born Jan. 4, 1947. Bryan was best remembered for his bright smile and loving personality. Bryan was laid to rest on July 11 in Salt Lake City. He is survived by his children, Shayne Hall, Cynthia Johnson and Thomas Fleming, and his mother Velma Hall. Memorials in Bryan's name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
ALYCIA HAMELINE
DENHAM SPRINGS, La. -- Alycia Rose Hameline, formerly of Pablo, died here on July 6, 2003. She was born on March 23, 1970, in Seattle, to Don and Kathleen E. (Hughes) Guild. At the age of three years, Alycia lost her parents and was brought up by her grandparents, Victoria and Theodore Hughes. Alycia attended school in Bellevue, WA. She worked as various places. She was preceded in death by her parents. Alycia is survived by her husband, Billy Bob Hameline, and three children, Amber, Kippershay and April; her grandmother, Victoria Hughes; an aunt and uncle along with four cousins. Funeral services were held on July 11 in Polson. Burial followed at Lakeview Cemetery, Polson.
BEATRICE HART
RONAN -- Beatrice Hart, 82, formerly of Muskogee, OK, died on July 28, 2003, from congestive heart failure at Westside Care Center here. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hart, daughter Sharon Hart Gibson, and two grandsons. She is survived by her sons Kenneth Hart (Ronan), Clayton Hart (Polson) and Curtis Hart (San Jose, CA); daughter Suzanne Hart Viegas (Silver Springs, NV); 14 grandchildren; and two sisters, Tessie Acrea (CA) and Helen Best (AR). Cremation has taken place.
CHARLES HEWANKORN
NIARADA -- Charles Hewankorn, 83, died on July 16, 2003, at Kalispell Regional Hospital of natural causes. Charlie was the hereditary chief of the Ksanka band of the Kootenai people on the Flathead Reservation. He was born on May 12, 1920, in a tipi at Dayton Creek to Jerome Hewankorn and Mary Isaac Big Knife Hewankorn. Mary was the daughter of Chief Isaac Big Knife. Chief Isaac was succeeded by his brother, Koostatah Big Knife, and upon his death in 1942, Charlie became the heir of the Big Knife chieftainship. As a child, Charlie attended school at Elmo, Antelope (near Niarada) and the Jesuit Boys Schools in St. Ignatius. He attended high school in Lone Pine, where he excelled in artwork. He married his lifelong sweetheart, Alice Finley, in 1948. He was a veteran of World War II where he served honorably in the Marine Corps. His formal education consisted of a Kinmen College Business degree, welding, agriculture and lumber-grading certificates. In his youth, he assisted his grandparents, Chief Koostatah and Suzette Big Knife, with ranching operations in Lone Pine. Charlie began his career at the Dixon Agency, where he worked as a Property and Supply Clerk. He then worked construction at the Hungry Horse and Canyon Ferry dams and in Omak as a lumber grader. Later, he moved his family to Denver and Los Angeles, where he worked in various positions. In 1986, poor health forced Charlie into retirement from his teaching position at the Two Eagle River School. He was an avid sportsman. He is survived by his wife (Niarada); his children, Charlotte Hewankorn (Polson), LaVerne Hewankorn Sr. (Polson), Leland James Hewankorn (Hot Springs), Levi Gerald Hewankorn (Pablo) and Rosalee Lane Roberson (Florida); and a bother, Al Hewankorn (Dayton); an uncle, Tony Anderson (Seattle, WA); 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Wake services began on July 17 at the Elmo Hall. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on July 18, also at the Elmo Hall. Burial with military honors followed at Dayton Cemetery.
BRIAN JAMES
RONAN -- Brian D. James, born May 17, 1985, died on July 16, 2003, in an auto accident. Brian graduated high school in June 2003 and worked for his stepfather, who was teaching him a trade in concrete and forming. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowboarding, wrestling, softball, and just being with his many families and friends. It seems he became a family member to many of his friends' families -- Bartels, Crocketts, McCreas, Roberts, Roddas, Swaneys, and many others. Brian is survived by his parents, Suzie James (Ronan) and Jeff James (Casper, WY), and his stepfather David Bell (Pablo); brother Warren James (Ronan); stepbrother Cameron Bell (Polson); grandmothers Marlene Seibel, Barbara Nungester; step-grandparents Virginia Bell Ness and Gene Bell; three uncles; seven aunts; and cousins and friends too numerous to mention. A celebration of Brian's life was held July 19 in Ronan.
