MARGARETT VILLARÍN
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Margarett "Marge" (Courville) Villarín, 88, died here on May 24, 2003, after a short illness. She was born Jan. 19, 1915, in Plains to Zephyr "Swift" Courville and Eda Helterline Courville. She was proud of her Montana roots, and was a member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes. She attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, and after graduation worked for the Forest Service, the Univ. of Montana and at Flathead Agency in Dixon before heading west to San Francisco. There she met her husband, Mario. After living in Europe and Bloomington, MN, she and her husband retired to Long Beach. Marge was an avid bowler and gardener, and was always ready for a game of bridge. She is survived by her husband of 53 years; children Corinne Florin (Bloomington, MN), Larry Villarín (Santa Monica, CA), and Jeanette Villarín (Frederic, WI); two grandchildren, Aaron (Sara) Florin and Rachel Florin (both of Minneapolis); and myriad relatives in the Missoula and Sanders County areas. Interment was at Riverside National Cemetery in Calif.
DEANNA AKERS
RONAN -- Deanna Rose Akers died at her home here on July 7, 2003, of pyoderma gangrenosum. She was born Nov. 7, 1937, to Russell and Wilma Burns in Pocatello, ID. She attended school in the Moiese Valley in MT and in the Charlo community. After high school she attended business college. She married Kay Draper and lived in Canada until their divorce. In 1963, she married Jerry Akers in Ronan. She worked for the Lake Co. Extension Service for 20 years. She was also a Cub Scout leader and managed a cow-calf effort for many years. She loved bowling, horses, dancing, cooking and her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Duane. She is survived by her pets; her husband; daughter Danielle Bartel (Lewistown); sons Scott Akers (Sacramento, CA) and Don Akers (Ronan); her mother; brothers Russ Burns (Sacramento) and Lynn Burns (Moiese); and six grandchildren. At Deanna's request, no formal services were held and cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to Lake County Home Health and Hospice in her memory.
DEAN B. ANDERSON
ROCKY BOY -- Dean Blake Anderson, former Lolo resident, died at a Havre hospital on July 7, 2003, as the result of accidental drowning. Blake was born April 20, 1961, in Blackfoot, ID, to Henry and Nancy (Raining Bird) Anderson. Survivors include his father in Helena; sons Andrew Anderson and Blake Anderson Jr. (both of Albuquerque, NM), and Matthew Anderson (Lolo); special friend Debra Tail Feathers (Lolo); sisters Delena Anderson and Gloria Ortiz (both of Los Angeles) and Connie Flores (Rocky Boy); and brothers Ernest "Reed" Anderson (St. Ignatius) and Edwin Oats (Helena). Services were conducted on July 10 at Rocky Boy.
JACK ASS
HOT SPRINGS -- Jack Ass, who was born Robert Craft 45 years ago, died near here on July 21, 2003, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He has been buried at the Jocko Catholic Cemetery east of Arlee alongside the remains of his mother, Dorothy Fisher. Craft changed his legal name to Jack Ass in 1997 when he established the "Hearts Across America" memorial campaign after his brother and a friend were killed in an alcohol-related auto accident.
ALDEN BARTEL
RONAN -- Alden Marvin Bartel died on July 5, 2003, at his home here of cancer. He was born on Feb. 24, 1928, to Irving and Mary Bartel in Faribault, MN. He attended grade school at Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Faribault High School in 1946. Alden married Marcella "Belle" Ernste in 1949 in Faribault. Alden worked as a bartender, a milkman, a milk tester and a troubleshooter for the dairymen in the Seattle area. He was with Darigold for 13 years. He and Belle bought a ranch near Ronan in 1965. In 1975, the couple bought the Coast-to-Coast store in Ronan. Alden retired in 1986. He enjoyed hunting and golf. He helped build the Mission Mountain Country Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; and brothers Bob and Marvin. Alden is survived by his wife of 54 years; daughters Diane Corbin (Greenbank, WA), Carolyn Benson (Olympia, WA), and Mary (Randy) Paulson (Kennewick, WA); and four sons and their wives, Tom and Valorie, John and Wendy, and Bill and Lana (all of Ronan), and Dan and Danielle (Lewistown). Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; his brother and his wife, Donald and Helen (Ronan); and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 9 in Ronan. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lake County Hospice Program.
DONALD BARTEL
RONAN -- Donald J. Bartel died on July 18, 2003, at the St. Luke Extended Care Facility here. Donald was born May 17, 1926, to Irving and Mary Bartel in Faribault, Minn. At 17 years of age he joined the Merchant Marine and was later drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps. He made his home in Seattle, where he worked for Westlake and Sons for 30 years. After retiring, he went to work briefly at Todd's Shipyards. He moved to Montana in 1993, where he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Bob, Marvin and Alden. Don is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Bruce; three grandchildren; his stepdaughter, Laina Hickok; stepson and wife, Terry and Lorna Hickok; seven step grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. At his request, no services were held. Memorial contributions may be made in Don's name to St. Luke Extended Care Facility.
PHILLIP CLAIRMONT
SEATTLE-TACOMA -- Phillip Bernard Clairmont died at his home here on July 29, 2003.
He was born on July 6, 1919, in St. Ignatius, and leaves behind many relatives and friends.
Services were conducted on Aug. 1 in Washington.
RHODA G. COOK
SPOKANE -- Rhoda G. Cook, 93, a longtime Hot Springs resident, died on July 5, 2003, at The Gardens Nursing Home here. Rhoda was the first woman member of the Montana Outfitters Association and served as their secretary for many years. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Grace L. Owens, and by sisters Grace Moore, Edith Anderson, Helen Paxon and Pat Culver. She is survived by one grandson, Steve Owens (Colorado Springs, CO); one granddaughter, Shellie Owens (Palo Alto, CA); one nephew; and two nieces. Graveside services were held on July 14 at Plains Cemetery.
