JOAN CHRISTOPHERSON
MISSOULA -- Joan Christopherson, 84, died of natural causes on Oct. 18, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital in Ronan. Joan was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Velore, India, to missionary parents Drs. John and Lillian Warnshuis. She attended School in Staten Island, New York, and graduated from Vassar College. She did graduate work at Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Columbia University. She and Edmund Christopherson were married in 1945. From 1958 to 1975, she worked at the Univ. of Mont., first as a teacher, then director of the nursery school and kindergarten, where she also taught child development and family relations. She was involved in the establishment of the Missoula chapter of the League of Women Voters, 4C's, Head Start and the Missoula Friends Meeting. In retirement she remained active in many community affairs. She sat on the board of MCAT, RSVP, the YWCA , Nursing Home Reform Coalition, the Missoula Area Agency on Aging and MCAT, as well as delivering lunches to senior citizens. Survivors include three daughters, Jan Charlo (Arlee), Ann Christopherson (Portland, OR) and Jean Christopherson (Chico, CA); one son, Ian Christopherson (Las Vegas, NV); eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. At her request Joan was cremated. The family is planning a memorial service at a later date.
ROBERT 'CHIEF' DEPOE, SR.
DIXON -- Robert R. "Chief" DePoe Sr., 71, died on Nov. 8, 2002, in Missoula. Bob was born April 17, 1931, in Neah Bay, WA, to Reginald and Geraldine Z. (Dupuis) DePoe. The family later moved to the Flathead Indian Reservation, where Bob was raised. He served in the U.S. Navy in Korea, where he was an underwater demolition team member. Bob married Rita Couture; they later divorced. He married Amy Hawkins on April 17, 1965, in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Bob worked as a knot bumper, truck driver and log loader. He worked for 20 years for Rehbein Construction in road construction and had also worked in the mines in Wallace, ID. A member of the Ravalli Community Church and the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Bob's greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved riding his four-wheeler, hunting, fishing and playing keno. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Rosie Pierre, sister Lorraine Fulkerson and grandchildren Curtis Roy DePoe and Keyra Ray DePoe. Survivors include his wife, Amy of Dixon; his children, Debra DePoe (Rob Edwards) of Polson, Robert R. DePoe Jr. (Becky) of Polson, Fredrick Allen DePoe (Sheryl Loberg) of Hot Springs, Carole Jean (Tom) Lankford of Ronan, Corky Ray Sias (DePoe) (Cynthia) of Polson, Amy Bernice Devereaux of Dixon, Joe DePoe (Alta) of Dixon and Michael E. Pierre (Marianne) of Evaro; brothers and sisters Jeanie Swartz of Polson, Glenn Fulkerson of Polson, Bruce Fulkerson of Spokane, Doug Fulkerson of San Diego and Carol Martin of Federal Way, WA; 27 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A wake began on Nov. 9 at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius, followed by funeral services with military honors on Nov. 11. Pallbearers were Tom Sheridan, Kay McLeod, Fred Tapia, Bob McCrea, Basil Tanner and Bill Hathaway. Honorary bearers are Joe Butler, Marvin Devereaux Jr., Joe Hawkins, Roy Couture, Mitch James, Brad Barton, Terry Tanner, Doug Morigeau, Bearhead Swaney, Rio Liberty, Rob Edwards, Leo Collier, Dallas Liberty, Calvin Hawkins, Bob Hawkins, Dale Craso, Tom Lankford, Joe Paul, Marian George Salway, Bill Gingras, Rodney Schall, Shane Hendrickson and all his nephews, nieces, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Per Bob's request, cremation followed the service. Memorials may be made to the St. Patrick Hospital Heart Foundation.
DAVID H. DINWOODIE
CHARLO -- David Hepburn Dinwoodie died on Oct. 17, 2002, at the age of 74. He was born in Trenton, N.J., to Nina Hepburn and William Anderson Dinwoodie. He spent his childhood years in Nova Scotia and attended schools in Freehold, living in the home of his grandparents, Dr. William Hepburn and Sarah Greene. In 1945, he moved to Bozeman, where he enlisted in the Navy after graduating high school in 1946. He attended the Univ. of Montana, the Univ. of Denver and earned his doctorate in American diplomatic history. He worked as a National Park Service ranger at Rocky Mountain Park, in Yellowstone Park and in Glacier Park. He served as a foreign service officer with the U.S. State Dept. and taught American history and American diplomatic history at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. He retired in 1986 to his home near Ninepipe Wildlife Refuge in the Mission Valley, teaching history for several years at Salish Kootenai College. He won the Oscar Winter Award in Western History for an article he wrote which combined his love of history with his love for western lands and life. David married Marie Olson in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 31, 1960. He had three children: David (Albuquerque, NM), Ian (Durham, NC), and Adrienne (San Diego). He is also survived by his brother, Daniel (Fairbanks); two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at a later date.
PAULINE H. FOWLER
POLSON -- Pauline Halvorson Fowler, 97, died on Nov. 4, 2002, at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here. Pauline was on born Sept. 13, 1905, in Cooperstown, ND, to Ole and Petra (Anderson) Halvorson. She married Clarence Fowler in August 1948 in Shelby. He preceded her in death. Survivors include her step-daughter, Betty Phillips (Jerome, D); eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on Nov. 9 in Polson. Burial took place at Conrad Memorial Cemetery.
WILLIAM J. 'JACK' FRANKS
MISSOULA -- William J. "Jack" Franks, 66, of Polson, died on Nov. 4, 2002, at St. Patrick Hospital here. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Eldredge Franks. He is survived by his wife, Carol Franks (Polson); his mother, Dollie Franks (Spokane); a daughter, Ginger Pennell (Houston); a son, Jason Franks (Kalispell); a brother, Gene Franks (Spokane); and a granddaughter, Krystle Pennell. A private interment is planned at Lakeview Cemetery.
ROBERT S. 'BOB' HANSON
RONAN -- Robert S. "Bob" Hanson, 89, died on Oct. 15, 2002, at St. Luke Extended Care Facility here. He was born in Polson to Hilbert S. and Inez Silver Hanson. Bob attended school in Polson, graduating in 1931. He also attended Montana State Univ. in Bozeman. His early working career took him to Helena, Grand Coulee Dam, Spokane and back to Ronan, where he met his wife Mercedes Guyette, whom he married on June 6, 1938. He also worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Billings and Lewistown. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. n 1948 the family returned to Ronan, where Bob purchased his mother's interest in the local Ford dealership, which he operated until 1966. Bob was active in community affairs in Ronan, where he served as mayor from 1957 to 1961. He worked in Helena during the 1967, 1969 and 1971 legislative sessions in the sergeant-at-arms office. He was regional manager of the 1970 census for Montana's 26 western counties and was elected as a delegate from Lake Co. to Montana's Constitutional Convention in 1972. He also enjoyed traveling and family gatherings. Bob was preceded in death by his wife and their infant son, John, and his parents. He is survived by his son, Rob, and daughter-in-law, Johanna (Helena and Polson); three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and his brother, J.H. "Hib" Hanson (Sequim, WA). Memorial Mass was celebrated on Oct. 18 in Ronan. Inurnment followed at the Ronan Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Luke Community Health Care Foundation, 107 Sixth Ave. S.W., Ronan, MT 59864; St. Joseph Medical Center, P.O. Box 1010, Polson, MT; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
WINTER D. HOOPS
ST. IGNATIUS -- Winter Dawn "Winter Hawk" Hoops, 21, died on her birthday, Nov. 17, in a one vehicle crash south of here. Winter was born Nov. 17, 1981, in Missoula to Myron Hoops and Marianne "Wally" Allard. Raised in St. Ignatius and Harlem, Winter excelled at basketball. She played in Harlem and for Mission High School in St. Ignatius. Winter was also a member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes and was employed as a personal care giver. She was preceded in death by her mother and her brother, Mike Benally. Survivors include her father and step mother, Myron and Mary King Hoops (Boise, ID); grandparents Helen Espinoza, Doug Allard and Bill Orr (all of St. Ignatius), Geraldine and Melvin Rutherford (Ft. Belknap) and Melvin Hoops (Harlem, MT); sisters Flower Gopher, Cass Gopher, Michealanne Gopher, Gabrielle Gopher, Angela Gopher (all of St. Ignatius) and Tia Hoops (Boise); brothers Joe Don Demontiney (Billings), Adam Demontiney (Missoula), Dustin Monroe (Great Falls), Tyler Jess Hoops (Browning) and Billy Gopher (St. Ignatius); and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, yayas, tupyes and friends from both the Flathead and Fort Belknap reservations. A traditional wake was conducted in St. Ignatius. Mass was celebrated on Nov. 20 in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Interment followed in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
BEVERLY F. KOHLER
POLSON -- Beverly F. Kohler, 82, died on Oct. 17, 2002, of natural causes at St. Joseph Hospital here. He was born on Nov. 6, 1919, to Frank Kain Kohler and Florence Glase Kohler in Missoula. He graduated from Missoula County High School. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. From 1943 to 1967 he was married to Juanita Tottingham. He had been married to Margaret Nordberg since 1968. Bev was a longtime salesman. He worked at H.O. Bell Ford, Krabbel Chevrolet, Bob Vert's Ford and Bob's Auto Mart. He also managed a 4B's Restaurant and Allentown Restaurant. He and Margaret owned and managed the Driftwood Restaurant. Bev spent his last 30-plus years at the lake place on Finley Point and the last six months at Evergreen Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Kohler Bush, and a brother, John "Jack" Kohler. Survivors include his wife of Polson; two sons and their wives, Rohn and June (Missoula) and Michael and Sally (Albany, OR); three grandchildren; one sister, Norine Smith (Seattle); and five nieces and one nephew. Private family graveside services have been held in Missoula with military honors.
DALE JAMES LLOYD
RONAN -- Dale James Lloyd, 39, died on Nov. 1, 2002, as the result of a vehicle accident in Pablo. Survivors include his wife, Angel, and his parents, Zon and Martha Lloyd (all of Ronan); four children: Robin Hedges (Polson), Mamie Hedges (Elko, NV), Logan Lloyd (Ronan) and Nicole Lloyd (WallaWalla, WA); a sister, Kathy Weingart (Helena); four brothers: Steve Lloyd (Salt Lake City), twins Dan Lloyd (Paul, ID) and David Lloyd (Lindon, UT), and John Lloyd (Twin Falls, ID); and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Nov. 5 at the Polson Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial followed at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.
