DORIS WORLEY
POLSON -- Doris Claire "Pinkie" Worley died on Aug. 3, 2002, from complications related to pneumonia at St. Luke Community Hospital in Ronan. She was born Aug. 19, 1925, to Margaret and Arthur Lawrence in Springfield, OH. She graduated from high school and worked briefly as a model and at an Army base during World War II. She then worked at the Palace Hotel and the Missoulian in clerical positions; for Fireman's Fund Insurance in Helena; and Bishop Insurance, Dupuis Lumber Mill, Jens Gran and as the Lake County Treasurer in Polson. She married James Worley on June 15, 1946. She enjoyed bowling, wintering in Texas and "summering" in Polson, going to Price's Restaurant, and flowers and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her son, Wells Worley and his love, April Notti (Superior); and her daughter, Diane, and her husband, Phillip Hogsett, and their son, Jesse (Polson). Cremation has taken place. Memorial services: Aug. 9 in Polson.
WALTER V. ZIMMERER
RONAN -- Walter V. "Wally" Zimmerer, 45, died at St. Luke's Hospital on Nov. 28, 2001. Born in Prince William County, VA, on Aug. 21, 1956, to Walter and Shiela (Mullen) Zimmerer, he was raised and educated in Ohio before joining the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he was stationed at Great Falls, where he met and married April McClure. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph. He is survived by his children, Christopher (Lytle Creek, CA); Tiffany, Courtney and Susep, and his wife, April (all of Ronan); his parents of Cleveland, OH; sisters Cathy (Mohammed) Kamron (AL), Amy (Brion) Gribble (OH), Sheila (John) Seaberg (MN), Susan Drakeford (OH), Marybeth (David) Lapp (OH), and Laura (Blaise) Roncagli (OH); and brothers Jerry (Danielle), Steve (Jennifer), Bob (Clara), Damieal (Elsa) and Tom (Kate) (all of OH). A wake was held at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius. Mass was celebrated Dec. 1 in St. Ignatius. Interment followed at the Jocko Cemetery near Arlee.
GERALD D. SLATER
PABLO -- Gerald D. Slater died on Oct. 7, 2002, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Jan. 20, 1943 in Bremerton, WA. He graduated from Libby High School in Libby. In 1972 he was awarded a master's degree in counseling from the University of Montana. His 30-year career as an Indian educator on the Flathead Reservation began with a post as Indian education counselor at the elementary school in St. Ignatius. That was followed by service as the founding principal of Two Eagle River School from 1973-78. The following year he joined the faculty at Montana State University in Bozeman, where he served as the director of the Native American Graduate Program. In 1979, he returned to the reservation, where he was named Academic Vice-President of Salish Kootenai College, a position he held for 23 years. During his tenure at SKC, he implemented bridge programs with other institutions of higher education, wrote hundreds of successful grants, organized the student services program, instituted the vocational education program (students from which built most of the campus buildings), and was recognized with numerous awards and commendations for his contributions to Indian education and people. Jerry is survived by his wife, Lois LaFromboise Slater; his son, Lee Slater, and his wife Rhonda; three daughters and their spouses, Kim and Scott Barber, Nicki and David McClure-Krahn, and Cori and Carlos Matthew; another son, David McClure, and his wife, Suzie; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Grace McComas; sisters Jackie Scottolini and Lisa Dillman; a brother, Mike McComas; and his beloved cousin, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. A wake began Wednesday in the Two Eagle River School Gym in Pablo. It will continue until 11 a.m. today (Oct. 10), at which time a memorial service will be conducted. HOWARD ARLINT
PABLO -- Howard Ivan Arlint, 83, died at his home here on Sept. 2l, 2002. Howard was born Jan. 14, 1919, in Norquay, Saskatchewan, Canada, to William and Hazel Arlint. He attended schools in Missoula and Ronan, graduating from Ronan High School in 1939. He married Evelyn "Ruth" Lockwood on June 4, 1941. Howard started work at Sterlings in Ronan while a high school student. He continued working in the grocery business by buying his own store in Pablo in 1954 and operating it until 1975 when he retired. He was instrumental in founding the Pablo Christian Church and was very active in the community, serving with the fire department and water system, the Ronan School Board and the St. Luke Hospital Board. He loved to follow his kids and grandkids in all their activities. He was preceded in death by his sister Mildred and a grandson. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; eight children and their spouses: Frank and Jan Arlint (Pablo), Bonnie and Dennis Abbey (Pablo), Thomas and Cee (Springfield, OR), Charles (St. Ignatius), Rod and Rita (St. Ignatius), Rebecca and Les Lundeen (Polson), Debra and Kris Klein (Polson), and Nancy and Kelvin Jones (Grayson, KY); 33 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Allen (Kalispell); and two sisters, Marie Decker and Elizabeth Reum (both of Ronan). Services were held on Sept. 26 at the Pablo Christian Church. Burial followed at Ronan Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pablo Christian Church.
RICHARD BAUER
RONAN -- Richard Clyde Bauer, who was born Oct. 14, 1921, died on Sept. 1, 2002. He was born to Mary Elizabeth Penning Bauer and Joseph A. Bauer. He was raised on Camas Prairie, graduated from Hot Springs High School and later received his degree in agriculture from Montana State College in 1950. He was a veteran of World War II and decorated with the Bronze Star after serving a tour of duty overseas in England. He taught school in Ronan for 27 years and was very active in community affairs such as the Ronan Lions Club, Mission Valley Heritage and Garden of the Rockies Museum. He was preceded in death by two brothers. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Velma; four daughters and their spouses, Vickie, Rickie (Emrose), Connie (Jack) and Ardyce (Doug); a stepbrother, Ray; and three grandsons and two great-granddaughters. There will be no services at his request. Memorials may be made to the Garden of the Rockies Museum.
ANDREA BLIXT-BROWN
PABLO -- Andrea Fay Blixt-Brown, 42, died at her home here on Sept. 19, 2002. She was born Aug. 1, 1959, in Polson. She attended school at Mission until her freshman year of high school; she graduated from high school in Helena. She also attended cosmetology school. She was married to Tom Brown. Andrea was a member of the Conf. Salish and Kootenai Tribes. She was most proud that her mother, Marjorie Blixt, is a full-blood Kootenai Indian. Andrea enjoyed knitting baby blankets for her grandbabies, nieces and nephews; loved to ride her horse, Autumn, and hunt moose; and always had a smile on her face for John Wayne. She loved the Grizzlies, plants, her dogs, and talking and visiting with anyone. Andrea was a loving and thoughtful mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and auntie. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Frank "Porky" McClure; maternal grandparents Mary L. Glover and Frank Phillips; and paternal grandparents Carl and Annie Blixt. She is survived by her two sons, Justin Colby Brown, and Jesse James Brown, his wife Christina "Tina" Diaz Brown, and two grandchildren, Dakota Wynn Brown and Destiny Davina Brown; her parents, Marjorie Blixt (Pablo) and Jim Blixt (Niarada); five sisters, Leslie Ray Snell (Ronan), Patricia "Chuckie" McClure and friend Cleora Wittl (Browning), Charleen Yellow Kidney (Pablo), Dureen Leo and husband Ken (Pablo), and Carla Pefley and husband Curtis (Polson); four brothers, Shawn Axle Blixt and wife Ambree (Pablo), Jonathan "John" Blixt (Pablo), Cheyenne Lee McClure and wife Christen (St. Ignatius) and Zack Nicolai (Georgia); plus many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Wake services were held at the Elmo Hall. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Sept. 21 in Elmo. Burial took place on the Brown property in Pablo.
JOHN B. BROOKS
ARLEE -- John B. Brooks, 76, died on Sept. 6, 2002, in St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula. John was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Hamilton to Cecil and Elsie (Kress) Brooks. Raised and educated in the Bitterroot, he joined the Navy and served until a he was injured. He then served in the in the Army until 1952 and eventually settled in the Jocko Valley, where he was a ranchhand and later had a lawn-mowing business. An avid fisherman, John loved to catch fish but always gave them away or released them, as he didn't really care to eat them. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Gerlich (Portland, OR); two brothers, Glen Brooks (Portland) and Bob Brooks (Seattle, WA); and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned, as John wished. His cremains will be scattered up the West Fork of the Bitterroot, where he spent a great deal of time fishing.
JAMES COOK
HOT SPRINGS -- James Henry Cook, 86, longtime Lonepine resident, died on Sept. 15, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Polson. He was born on Nov. 10, 1915, at his father's homestead, later called the Lonepine Angus Ranch, to Henry James Cook and Stella Mabel Dyer. He was educated in Flathead County and in Lonepine. He graduated from Lonepine High School in 1933, as valedictorian. He ran the family farm jointly with his father until 1970. On Aug. 5, 1972, he married Della Barrett Sampson in Hot Springs. In May 2000, they sold the ranch and moved into Hot Springs. James was a past master of the Nyah Grange and Little Bitterroot Grange; a member of the Senior Citizen Center; and an elder of the Presbyterian Church. He was on the board of directors of the Western Angus Association and Valley Bank of Hot Springs and served as treasurer of the tax association. He won many awards and trophies at the Western Montana Angus Association for prize Angus cattle. He also won many prizes at the county fair for his cattle, apples, wheat and oats. He is survived by his wife; one brother, Ross Cook (AZ); two sisters, Eleanor Woods (Hot Springs) and Fern Clements (TX); one stepson, Monty Sampson (WA); two stepdaughters, Marena Downs (WA), and Cathy Roggia (Germany). He is also survived by five nephews and five nieces; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services and burial took place on Sept. 22 in Lonepine. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lonepine Hall or the Hot Springs Presbyterian Church.
CLIVE CROMWELL
POLSON -- Clive Carroll Cromwell, 59, died on Sept. 15, 2002, of natural causes at his home on Finley Point. Clive was born Dec. 20, 1942, in Victoria, BC, Canada, to Dr. and Mrs. Lincoln (Grace) W. Cromwell. Survivors include his daughter, Camille Cromwell; Camille's mother, Barbara Blasi; his mother; brothers Spencer Cromwell, Kent Cromwell and Dean Cromwell; a sister, Leah Higgins; a grandson; six nieces; six nephews; and his beloved dog, Stinky. Cremation has taken place and burial will be held in California.
OLIVER DAILEY
RONAN -- Oliver Vincent Dailey, 84, died here on Sept. 20, 2002. Vince was born in Douglas, WY, on June 16, 1918, the son of Charles and Caroline Dailey. He was a graduate of Olathe (Colorado) High School, and attended mechanic school before enlisting in the Army. He and Ruth Frank were married on Jan. 6, 1945. They and their three children later moved to Montana and lived in Eureka, Sidney, Kalispell, Polson and settled in Ronan, where they owned and operated Dailey's Radiator Repair Shop. Vince was a devoted family man who loved to joke and tease, and who loved antiques and camping. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his son Richard and friend Val Adamson (Dupuyer); daughter Pat and husband Tim Skinner (Ronan); son Robert and wife Francie (Polson); 10 grandchildren and their spouses; four great-grandchildren; a sister Evelyn Stearns and husband Billy (SD); three sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Cremation has taken place. Wake and memorial services were held Sept. 27 and 28, respectively. The family suggests donations in memory of Vince to a charity of the donor's choice.
JOSEPH GIBSON
POLSON -- Joseph James Gibson, 72, died of natural causes at his Lakeview Village apartment here on Sept. 18, 2002. Joe was born on July 14, 1930, in Dover, NH, the son of Joe and Katherine (Oates) Gibson. He served in the Army from 1947 to 1953. His military service included 18 months in Korea. After the service, he was a cross-country truck driver and also traveled with an auto thrill show. He came to Polson in March 1990 and established a window washing business. He also did general maintenance and repair work for the Polson-Flathead Historical Museum, the Polson beautification project, and the Presbyterian Church. Twice he walked from Polson to Dayton to promote and raise funds for the Lake County Cancer Relay for Life. He collected aluminum cans for recycling and gave the money from sales to buy church choir music. He was a member of the Polson Lions Club. He encouraged people with alcohol abuse problems to attend AA meetings. He also called on retirement home residents and other shut-ins and he was active at the Polson Senior Citizens Center. Memorial services were Sept. 23 at the church. Cremation has taken place.
