J. RONALD ROUSH
CHARLO -- J. Ronald Roush, 75, died on March 14, 2002, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyo., of natural causes. Ronald was born Dec. 30, 1926, near Sheridan, Wyo., to Henry and Doris Roush. He graduated from Campbell County High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Army shortly thereafter and was stationed in Japan. He married Donna Faye Wilson in 1951. He married Montana Jean Fisher on May 25, 1959. They moved to Charlo in 1962, where ranching was his primary occupation. He also worked as a mechanic. He was active in numerous community organizations. He is survived by two sisters, Wanda Innes (Gillette, WY), and Norma Atwood (Joliet); a brother, Robert Roush (Gillette); his children and their spouses, Paul and Lynn Roush (Gillette), Dennis Roush, Eva and Forrest Johnsen (Ronan,) Jerry and Denice Roush (Gillette), Dora and Rick Kerr (Charlo), and Mel and Lupe Roush (Benicia, CA); 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on March 21 in Charlo. The family requests that memorials be made to the Charlo American Legion and the Charlo Booster Club.

ELSIE SCHIELE
RONAN -- Elsie G. Schiele, 94, died here on March 11, 2002. She was born in Hewitt City, MN, on Dec. 26, 1907, and married Martin Schiele on May 22, 1927, in Stanley, N.D. Together they had 12 children. She was a lifelong member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; son Norman; and a great-grandson. Survivors include her children, Ilene Fraser, Donna Toelke, Marvin, Larry, Stewart and Dennis (all of Ronan); Delores David (Oakridge, OR), Ramon (Eureka), Harold (Pablo), Ronald (Olympia, WA), and Sandra Noble (Kalispell); as well as 42 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on March 12 in Ronan.

RICHARD C. SHOUMAKER
POLSON -- Richard C. Shoumaker, 82, died on March 3, 2002, at his home here. He was born in Sheridan, WY, on Nov. 11, 1919, to Evelyn and Wiley Shoumaker. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Polson); one son, Ted (Kalispell); two daughters, Penny Starr (Polson) and Kate Langford (Peoria, AZ); a brother, Keith (Buffalo, WY); a sister, Marietta Gripp (Green River, WY); six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew. Services and funeral were held on March 7 in Polson. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of choice.

THERESA SHOURDS
FRENCHTOWN -- Theresa "Tessie" Amelia Shourds, "Gram," died on April 3, 2002, at her home here while surrounded by her family.

Tessie began her circle of life on March 25, 1931, in St. Ignatius. She was born Albert and Philemine (Ducharme) Trahan. She was raised on the Flathead Reservation and attended the Ursulines Catholic School before finishing at Chemawa Indian School in Ore.

Tessie married Chester Shourds in May of 1947 in St. Ignatius. The family made their home in Missoula before moving to Frenchtown in 1954.

Tessie was a dedicated homemaker who raised nine kids and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Salish-Kootenai Tribes, an avid garage sale bargain hunter and she enjoyed picking huckleberries in her secret patch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Sr., in 1980 and their son, Chester Jr., in 2000.

She leaves behind her children and their spouses: Roger and Louise (CT), Kerry and Jamie (WA), Barbara (Frenchtown), Kathleen (FL), Colleen (Frenchtown), Belinda (AZ), Kelley (AZ), Rebecca and Ed (Cascade), and Jimmy and Kelly (Frenchtown); four sisters, Marie Cowen, Eileen Quist, Laurina Wallace and Theresa Morigeau (all of MT); a brother, Armand "Hank" Trahan (Mass.); nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A traditional Salish wake was at the family home in Frenchtown. Mass of the Resurrection followed in Frenchtown. Interment was at the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.

VICTORIA A. SHOURDS
POLSON -- Victoria Anne Shourds, 56, died at her home here on Jan. 9, 2002. She was born on May 26, 1945, in San Diego to Mason E. and Mildred Shourds. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her three children, Fawn Rinker and husband, Darrin (Des Moines, WA); Kate McPail and husband, David (Anaconda); and Joseph Shanklin (CO); sister Sharon Cline (Spokane); brother Jack Marotte (San Diego); four grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. A memorial service was held on Jan. 18. Memorials may be made to the Lake County Humane Society.

FLORENCE A. SMITH
PLAINS -- Florence Anna Smith, 93, died on Nov. 26, 2001, at Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home here. She was born on Aug. 26, 1908, in Boise, ID, the daughter of Nathaniel and Ada Howes. On June 12, 1931, she married Robert E. Smith in Missoula. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Jack and Charles Howes. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Jack Graves (Polson); two grandsons, Frank Graves (U.S. Army), and Joel and wife Leslie Graves (Anaconda); three granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral services and burial were Dec. 1 in Plains.

DELLEEN M. STARNER
POLSON -- Delleen Marie Starner, 56, died here on April 12, 2002. Survivors include her husband, John Starner (Polson); nine children: Lauretta Hunold (OR), Darrell Hunold (NH), Dwayne Hunold (WA), LaDean Myers (WA), Tammi Bear (Polson), Kari Hunold (OR), Dwight "Joe" Hunold (Ronan), Toni Williams (WA), and Anthony Williams (Polson); 31 grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. A memorial service was held on April 14 in Ronan.

DWIGHT STOCKSTAD
MISSOULA -- Dwight S. "Stocky" Stockstad, 75, of Charlo, died of pancreatic cancer at St. Patrick Hospital here on March 13, 2002. He was born to Elizabeth and Senor Stockstad in Gorman, S.D. After graduating from high school in Onida, S.D., Stocky enlisted in the U.S. Navy and then went to college after his honorable discharge. Stocky and Hope Cox were married on June 4, 1950 in Rapid City, S.D. The newlyweds moved to Missoula, where Stocky earned a master's degree in forestry and wildlife management from the University of Montana. He also received a teaching certificate from UM and was a member of the Phi Sigma Biological Society. For 10 years Stocky worked for Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks as the biologist at the Ninepipe Wildlife Management Area. Stocky was preceded in death his parents and two infant brothers. He is survived by his wife (Charlo); one brother, Ralph, and his wife, Edeltraud (Charlo); two sisters and their husbands, Avis and Clarence Iversen (Gettysburg, SD) and Norma and Darrell Harer (Hoven. SD); and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on March 18 in Ronan. The family suggests memorials in Stocky's name to the Owl Research Institute Inc., P.O. Box 39, Charlo, MT 59824; the Missoula County Cancer Association, 3005 Queen St., Missoula, MT 59801; or Faith Lutheran Church, 410 Fifth St. S.W., Ronan, MT 59864.

VIRGIL A. STOVER
POLSON -- Virgil Allen Stover, 71, died on April 9, 2002, of natural causes at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center here. He was born March 29, 1931, in Grandview, WA, to Victor and Effie (den Boer) Stover. On April 2, 1984, he married Sharon Nicolaisen in Reno, NV. She survives him at the family home in Polson. He is also survived by children Eric Nicolaisen (Vancouver, WA), Shana Stover (Polson), Joy Delorme (Yakima, WA), Diane Musilek (Wenatchee, WA), and Diana Green (Polson); and two brothers, one sister, eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on April 12 on Polson. Cremation has taken place.

JOHN M. SULLIVAN JR.
RONAN -- John M. Sullivan Jr., 83, longtime Charlo resident, died on Feb. 25, 2002, at St. Luke Extended Care here. He was born April 25, 1918, to John and Julia Sullivan on the family farm near D'Aste, where John was the first baby baptized in the D'Aste Church. Raised and educated near Charlo, he took over the family farm at age 15, when his father died. He married Velma Mae McNees in D'Aste on Nov. 21, 1940. While making their home on the farm near Charlo, John worked for the Cenex in Ronan for 30 years. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, he had been active with the Loins Club, Volunteer Fire Department, the Charlo School Board, the water board and the Charlo Senior Citizens Center. John was preceded in death by his daughter, Marilyn; his sister, Margaret; and his parents. Survivors include his wife of 61 years (Ronan); children and their spouses, John Michael (Norma) Sullivan III (Boise, Idaho), Janice (Mike) McMeekin (Lolo), Carol (Al) Onsager (Ronan), Kathy (Paul) Briney (Polson) and Daniel (Anne Marie) Sullivan (Winthrop Harbor, IL); two sisters, Mary Logan (Indiana, PA), and J. Viola Herak (Polson and Las Vegas); 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 8. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church, D'Aste Women's Club or to the Charlo Senior Citizen Center, all of Charlo; St. Luke Extended Care of Ronan. or charity of the donor's choice.
