ALBERT C. ADAMS SR.
ST. IGNATIUS -- Albert Cecil "Sonny" Adams, 64, died in his sleep in Sacramento, CA, on June 30, 2002. He was born in St. Ignatius on March 17, 1938. An enrolled Salish tribal member, he left the reservation in the early 1940s with his mother and stepfather, Joseph H. Matt. Albert spent his late childhood, adolescence and a portion of his adult life in Sacramento. Albert was a gifted athlete. He fought in the 1956 San Francisco Golden Gloves 175-pound division and made it to the semi-finals. In 1959, he was the light-heavyweight boxing champion of Soledad State Prison in CA. He later signed a contract to fight professionally, but his career never came to fruition, because of a severe auto accident. In the 1970s Albert returned to St. Ignatius. He lived there until ill health took him back in 1997 to CA, where he lived with his biological brother, Richard A. Matt. He was a past ILWU member. He was divorced from Julia Adams. His daughter, Sherry, preceded him in death, as have his mother, Violet Tellier Matt; his father, Francis Adams; two brothers, Raymond Matt and Darryl Lopez; and his sister, Betty. He is survived by his children, Albert Jr., Phillip, Alice, Patricia and Wesley. He also leaves behind grandchildren too numerous to mention. A wake began July 3 at the Longhouse. Cremation followed. His remains will be scattered in the Mission Mountains.
JAMES J. ADAMS
ST. IGNATIUS -- James J. Adams Sr., 54, of Camas Prairie, died on June 7, 2002, in Missoula, while surrounded by his family. Born April 20, 1948, in St. Ignatius to Alec Adams and Mary Ann Kicking Woman, he was raised on the Flathead Reservation, where he attended the Ursuline School in St. Ignatius, before graduating from Camas Prairie. A member of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Jim was a loving and dedicated father. He raised his children after his wife, Debra OldHorn, died at an early age. Doing whatever it took, he provided for them the best way he could. When time permitted, James enjoyed traveling, picking huckleberries, listening to powwow music and going to powwows. He was a championship traditional dancer, winning many awards throughout his life. However, his greatest joy was being around his kids and everyone else's, so much so that many know him as "Uncle Jim" and "Grandpa." In addition to his wife and father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Melvin Kicking Woman; his grandparents, Lucy Parker and Mitch SmallSalmon; and a grandson, Mack Miller. Survivors include his mother; his children, James Adams Jr., Jason Arthur Adams and Danielle Adams; grandchildren MaryAnn Adams-Miller and Alan Miller Jr.; siblings and their spouses, Francis (Luann) Kicking Woman (Missoula), Sue (Dick) Nicol (Clayton, ID), Rose Kicking Woman (Pablo) and Nola KickingWoman (Missoula); and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Traditional wake services began June 8 at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius. Mass of the Resurrection followed the wake closing on June 10.
MARGARET ADAMS
Margaret Mary (Edwards) Adams, a Nez Perce tribal member, died on June 17, 2002. Margaret was born on Aug. 23, 1918 in Kamiah, ID, to Louis and Lillie (Moffett) Edwards. She attended school in Kamiah. As a child, she loved to horseback ride and learned to play piano by ear. She spent summers camping with her family in a tipi. She went to work as a nurse's assistant in Wash. She also worked as a riveter at the shipyards in Winslow. She met her husband, Francis J. Adams, in the late 1940s. She cared for her mother-in-law, Margaret Skul n'ah Adams, in their home until she passed away in 1973. She and Francis also raised three of their four grandchildren. Margaret and Francis took in many family members over the years. Margaret was also active in the Worley community. She participated in activities and events at St. Michael's Catholic Church, and served as a judge on various election committees. She enjoyed playing bingo and visiting with friends at the Coeur d' Alene Casino. She is survived by her grandchildren Cynthia Dretke, William Mellick, Brenda Morris and Scott Mellick. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, and numerous niece and nephews, some of whom live on the Flathead Reservation. She is also survived by one sister, Jeanette Scott (Kamiah, ID). She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001; and by seven sibling: Lynus Walker, Raymond Edwards, Doris Edwards, Isabelle Tenas, Marie Avart, Christine Matthews and Josephine Whitfield. Mass was celebrated on June 20 in Worley, ID, where internment also took place.
KENNETH AHLBORN
ST. IGNATIUS -- Kenneth Buck Ahlborn, 57, died on Sept. 19, 2001, of an apparent heart attack at the home of a friend here. Born July 18, 1944, in St. Ignatius, Buck was the son of Alex and Alice (Landigreen) Lozeau. A member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, he was raised in the Magpie Creek area west of Dixon and was a lifelong resident of the Flathead Reservation. A tree pruner by profession, Buck worked in the woods for the Tribes' Forestry Development Division. Buck married Judie Markuson and to this union there were two children. They later divorced. Buck later met his companion of 25 years, Marlene Bourdon, Pablo. In Buck's younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but as he began to get older he limited himself to fishing. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers Carl and Johnny, and his sisters Helen, Delores and Joyce Marie. Survivors include his sons, Kenny Ahlborn (Ravalli) and Rocky Ahlborn (St. Ignatius); a daughter, Dacia Whitworth (Ronan); his brothers, George Sharp (St. Ignatius) and Daryl Lozeau (Missoula); his sisters, Geraldine Larson (St. Ignatius) and Esther Baylor (Missoula); two stepchildren, Paul Mahseelah Jr. and Marcella Mahseelah (Pablo); six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Traditional wake services began Sept. 20 at Foster and Durgeloh Funeral Home in St. Ignatius. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Sept. 21 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Interment followed at Pleasant View Cemetery in St. Ignatius.
VIOLET ALBERT
RONAN -- Violet "Tina" Albert, 60, died at her home here on Feb. 26, 2002, from natural causes.
Tina grew up and attended schools in Polson.
She resided between Polson, Ronan and several other places throughout the west.
She is survived by her daughter, Ramona L. Butler; her son, Ronald R. Enfinger; three grandchildren; four sisters; one brother; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside memorial services took place on March 1 at the Lakeview Cemetery.
ANN ALEXANDER
POLSON -- Ann Elizabeth Alexander, 91, died on Aug. 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Medical Center here.
She was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Dunn County, ND, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Roshau) Scheeler.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Aug. 26 in Polson.
Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery in Ronan.
ETHAN ALLEN
RONAN -- Ethan Oliver Allen, 74, died on May 6, 2002.
He was born on Oct. 3, 1927, in Colvert, MI, to John Zedok Allen and Ruby Octavia Hill Allen.
As a child in Montana he grew up on ranches and attended many different schools, the last in Whitehall, where he completed the seventh grade.
At 20 years old, he joined the U.S. Navy.
After his discharge he joined his parents in Plains to help run the ranch. In May 1954, he married Marie Mydland.
They had four children, then divorced in 1964. Ethan also worked as a logger and auto mechanic in Moses Lake, WA, where he met and married his second wife, Juanita. Ethan enjoyed gardening, traveling, visits with family and a lively pinochle card game. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Zed, Laurence and John; a daughter, Mary Louise; and his wife Juanita. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Laura and David Crawford (Ronan), Christopher and Shannon Allen (Plains), Debi and David Kulawinski (Plains), Ruby Hammond (Twin Falls, ID), and Chuck and Vickie Brumet (Moses Lake); 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held May 9 in Plains.
His ashes will be interred in both Plains and Moses Lake.
