MAURICE H. ROTH
PABLO -- Maurice H. Roth died on Sept. 25, 2001, at Lily of the Valley Adult Care Center in Pablo.
He was born Jan. 10, 1918, in the Bull Mountains, on the Roth family homestead to Leo Peter and Nola Marie (Zirkelbach) Roth.
Maurice was a bachelor and was department chief with the Bureau of Reclamation in Billings for 30 years.
He retired in 1974.
After retiring he traveled to baseball parks around the country to enjoy his favorite sport.
Six years after retirement an illness restricted his travel, at which time he moved to Butte with his brother Urban's family.
He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the National Association of CCC Alumni, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion and the Immaculate Conception Parish.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater in World War II.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Norbert, sister Aurelia, brother and sister-in-law Manuel and Solveig Roth and niece Cynthia Roth.
He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Urban and Donna Roth of Polson and Valery and Elma Roth of Spokane; nine nephews; one niece; and numerous great- and grandnephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 8 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Polson.
After graveside services, a luncheon will be served in the church basement.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Immaculate Conception Church in Polson or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
RICHARD 'DICK' SCHAEFFER
RONAN -- Richard "Dick" Schaeffer, age 56, died of natural causes on Oct. 5, 2001, at his home near here.
Richard was the son of Albert and Cora Schaeffer and was born April 11, 1945, in Lewiston, Idaho.
He graduated from Prairie High School in Cottonwood, Idaho, in 1963, where he met his wife, Carole Schaeffer.
He attended Clark County Community College in Vancouver, Wash.
He and Carole were married in 1966.
In 1980, Dick and Carole moved their family from Portland, Ore., to Condon, where they owned and ran the Holland Lake Lodge until 1987.
They then located to Ronan where Dick managed the Whiskey Trail Ranch until his death.
Dick is survived by his wife Carole (Ronan); a son, David, and his fiancee, Susan (Melbourne, Fla.); a daughter, Chelle, and her husband, Brian, and two grandsons, Alex and Adam (all of Seattle). He also leaves behind six sisters: Mary, Patsy, Janice, Mona, Pam and Janeil; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents and a brother preceded him in death.
Dick was an avid sportsman and former outfitter.
He lived his dreams while in Montana.
Memorial Mass was celebrated on Oct. 12 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ronan.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, in care of the Pass-It-On Campaign; or to Harborview Medical Center, in care of Burn Memorial Fund, Box 359950, 325 Ninth Ave., Seattle, WA 98104-2499.
KERN GEORGE PAUL SCHULTZ
POLSON -- Kern George Paul Schultz, 83, Polson, died from natural causes on Sept. 22, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital.
He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Circle to Bernhardt and Alice Schultz.
As a young teen he moved with his family to western Montana, graduating from Polson High School in 1936.
Kern spent several years working with his father and brothers in the lumber business, mainly in the Lake Mary Ronan area. During the 1940s the family owned and operated the Schultz Wood and Coal fuel business in Polson, at the homesite where Kern resided until his death. He retired in 1980 after 20 years with Plum Creek Lumber.
Kern enjoyed many years of hunting with a rifle and a bow, also fishing in any season. He never married.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elvira Burland (Kalispell); and brothers Gerald (Phoenix), Roland (Seattle), Arland and Marvin (Polson) and Robert (Niarada).
Kern is survived by four sisters, Fern Kremer (Blackfoot, ID), June Olsen (Polson), LaDynne Allen (Kaysville, UT), and Florence Ingraham (Phoenix); two sisters-in-law, Rose Schultz (Polson) and Virginia Schultz (Phoenix); along with numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Max.
No services are planned at this time. Cremation has taken place and Kern's remains, along with his brother Robert's, will be placed in the woods where they spent so many happy years.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or charity of the donor's choice.
MELINDA LOU SENDERS
RAVALLI -- Melinda Lou Senders, 59, died on Oct. 1, 2001, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.
Services were held on Oct. 4 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. Ignatius. Cremation will follow this week's viewing per Melinda's wishes.
MASON E. SHOURDS
POLSON -- Mason E. Shourds, 87, Polson, died on Sept. 17, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital from natural causes.
He was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Ronan to Benjamin and Daisy Shourds.
He is survived by his daughter, Victoria Shourds, and her companion, Charles Bragg (Polson); his stepdaughter, Sharon Kline (Otis Orchards, WA); his stepson, Jack Marotte (San Diego); a brother, Benny Shourds (San Diego); three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors were held on Sept. 29 at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.
MARVIN D. 'MIKE' STORKSON
HOT SPRINGS -- Marvin D. "Mike" Storkson, 71, died at his home in Hot Springs on Sept. 29, 2001, of cancer.
Survivors include his former wife, Twila Sagen; daughter Michelle and granddaughter Nakomi (Columbia Falls); three sisters, Eloise Egtvedt (Dillon), Shirley Emery (Troy) and Betty Whitman (Whitefish); three brothers, Richard Storkson (Troy) and Carl Storkson and Delbert Storkson (both of Olney); many nieces and nephews; and many, many dear friends.
Memorial services were Oct. 5 at Johnson Mortuary in Kalispell.
