CATHERINE MARIE MATTESON
POLSON -- Catherine Marie Matteson, 84, died here on Oct. 10, 2001.
She was born to Gertrude and Camillus Herzog on Dec. 20, 1916, in Massillon, Ohio.
Catherine was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters and a son, David.
Survivors include a daughter, Lucinda (Ohio); two sons, Michael Garrison (Missoula) and Gene Garrison (Lake Mary Ronan); eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A private ceremony was held in Missoula. Graveside services and burial were at Central Montana Memorial Gardens at Lewistown.
KADEN MICHAEL MCELDERRY
PABLO -- Kaden Michael McElderry, four months old, died unexpectedly at the family home in Pablo on Sept. 21.
Survivors include his parents, Adrian McElderry and Brandi Jorgenson (Pablo); and his grandparents, Melvin and Maureen McElderry (Pablo) and Glenn and Jennie Jorgenson (Polson).
Services and a vigil were held on Sept. 24 at the Foster and Durgeloh Funeral Home in St. Ignatius. Burial was in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery, with Jerry, Justin, Isaac and Mike McElderry serving as pallbearers. Mike McElderry also presided at the graveside services.
DONALD J. MOLLICA
ARLEE -- Donald J. Mollica, 77, husband of Jackie and father of son Paul and daughter Donna, died on Aug. 14 in Rochester, New York.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Mission in Arlee on Sept. 22nd with Fr. Andrew Maddock, S.J. Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Jocko Cemetery.
DENNY M. NELSON
ARLEE -- Denny M. Nelson, 20, died Sept. 6, 2001, near Arlee from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.
Denny was born June 25, 1981, in St. Ignatius to Dennis Nelson and Karen Stiner. Raised and educated in the Arlee area, he went to work in the woods as a firefighter, seeing action throughout western Montana. Recently he had just gone to work for Jore Corp. of Ronan.
Denny was always busy with various projects and loved to go catching rattlesnakes and fishing. He was very proud of his '72 Mustang Grande that he was restoring, and he loved to be with his daughter and family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Hiram and Barbara Nelson and Jack and Sugar Stiner.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene Wall, and daughter, Shawntaya Nelson, of the family home in Arlee; his parents, Karen Stiner and Arnie Ludlow of Kalispell and Dennis Nelson and Sharon Chadwick of Arlee; his sisters and their families, Margo Morigeau and children, Mariah and Richard of Fort Lewis, Wash., and Rachel Nelson of Alberton; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Sept. 11 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church with interment following in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
LYLE L. NEWTON
POLSON -- Lyle L. Newton, 75, of Polson, died of natural causes on Sept. 13, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy (Polson); two sons, Sam Newton (Lincoln, Neb.) and Richard Newton (Polson); five brothers, Clyde Newton (Bloomfield, Neb.); Bernard Newton (Lincoln, Neb.); Bob Newton (Harper Woods, Mich.); and Jerry Newton and John Newton (both of Bella Vista, Ark.); and a daughter, June Hansen (Crossville, Tenn).
Memorial services were Sept. 18 at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Polson. Inurnment with military honors followed at Lakeview Cemetery.
CATHERINE 'KITTY' MEHRE PALIN
RONAN -- Catherine "Kitty" Palin died on Sept. 4, 2001, at the West Side Care Facility here.
Kitty was born to Peter and Theresa Mehre on Jan. 8, 1911, in St. Louis. She grew up in Chicago with her grandparents after her parents died.
She married William Palin on April 4, 1941. They settled in Montana, where he worked for the Missoulian. Kitty worked as a nurse's aide at St. Patrick Hospital for seven years.
Kitty loved concerts, music, skating, her pet poodles and playing with children. She will be remembered as an incredible storyteller. Kitty was also a wonderful cook, enjoyed gardening, crocheting and was an avid reader, particularly of Louis L'Amour. She was a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Parish until she moved to the West Side Care Facility in 1989.
Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, her brother, her sister and her husband.
She is survived by her niece, Jackie (Bill) Hering of Lodi, Wis.; her nephew, Joe Mehre of Illinois; her nephew, Gene (Dorothy) Allard of Ronan; her niece, Rose Bailey of Dixon; her niece, Ann Woodhull of Livingston; and numerous great- and great-great-grandnieces and nephews.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Sept. 8 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission with Father Andrew Maddock, S.J., as celebrant. Interment followed at the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
VENA JANE PRONGUA
HOT SPRINGS -- Vena Jane (Stellmon) Prongua, 87, died on Sept. 2, 2001, at Brendan House in Kalispell.
Vena was born to William and Mary Stellmon on May 24, 1914, in Fort Benton. She began her education in a one-room schoolhouse west of Fort Benton and graduated from Lonepine High School in 1933.
On Oct. 24, 1938, she married Charles Prongua in Kalispell. Together they built a cattle ranch in the Hot Springs valley and had five children. Vena enjoyed her family, the ranch, working with cattle and helping others.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hot Springs. She also was involved in many service organizations including Nyah Grange, Pamona Women's Activities, Town and Country Extension Club, Diamond Point Garden Club, 4-H, VFW, PTA, Lonepine Hall, Hot Springs Library and children's swimming lessons.
Vena's joy in sharing was shown through visiting shut-ins, giving to any in need. She loved to garden and tend her flowers while sharing the bounty.
Vena is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Janet Prongua (Glendive); Terry and Sandy Prongua and Richard and Diane Prongua (all of Hot Springs); and eight grandchildren.
Vena was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charles; son Edward; infant daughter Judy Mae; five brothers, Orville, John, William, Harold and Les Stellmon; and sister Lema Abbott.
Funeral services were Sept. 8 at the Hot Springs Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Robert Nagy officiated. Burial followed at Plains Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Hot Springs Trinity Lutheran Church or to the Preston Town and County Library in Hot Springs.
