Nellie May Mesick
Nellie May (Stone) Mesick was born Oct. 24, 1907, in Allegan, Mich. Nellie died June 23, 2003, in Sidney at the age of 95.
Her parents were Anna (Nichols) and Ira Chaffe Stone. She graduated from Allegan High School, then took a teaching course at County Normal Training Center in Allegan and began teaching in 1928. After a year, she attended Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo, Mich., and earned her life certificate in teaching. This was the last year the certificate was offered.
In 1932, she was united in marriage to Marshall Mesick of Allegan. They farmed until 1971, and moved into Allegan due to Marshall's poor health. During these years, she taught in schools in and around Allegan and retired in 1971.
Marshall died in 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, George, and his wife, Mary Stone; and one nephew, Wayne Mesick.
In 1987, she moved to Glendive to be near her brother and his family. In 2000, they all moved to Sidney.
Nellie is survived by her brother, William Stone, and his wife, Florence; her nephew, Richard Stone, and his wife, Jeri Dee, Sidney, and their family; her nephew, Robert Stone, and his wife, Bonnie, Holland, Mich., and their family; and a niece, Shirley Mesick, Marcellus, Mich.
Cremation has taken place. Burial and grave-side services will be at Mallary Cemetery, Allegan, at a later date under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home, Sidney, and Gordon Funeral Home, Allegan.
Kathryn Allstot
Mass of the Christian burial for Kathryn Allstot, 97, Fairview, will be at 10 a.m. March 18, 2003, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel, with Father Francis Schreiber presiding.
Pam Burman, accompanied by Janet Duda, will provide music. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Kathryn (Helmberger) Allstot was born May 12, 1905, in Petoskey, Mich., to parents Jacob and Ann (Price) Helmberger. At the age of 7, Kathryn moved to Madison, Neb., then on to Castlerock and Lucas, S.D. She attended schools in Lucas, S.D. She worked four years in Burke, S.D., at the Larson Hotel. On Feb. 25, 1925, she was united in marriage to Lee Allstot, in Burke, S.D. They farmed in Burke until they moved to Sentinel Butte, N.D., in 1927 where they lived until 1930 when they moved to Sidney where Kathryn's husband worked for Lalonde Construction Company. In 1931, they moved to Fairview where Kathryn worked as a cook. In 1937, they opened Lee's Caf/ which they operated for 10 years. They then opened up Lee and Kate's Recreation Parlor, which they operated for 25 years. They sold out in 1972, when they retired. Lee died April 5, 1979. Kathyrn remained in Fairview until July 16, 2001, when she became a resident of the Extended Care facility.
Kathryn was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, the Alter Society and the Senior Citizens. She enjoyed canning, cooking and gardening and was always on hand to help when someone was sick.
Kathryn died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the Sidney Health Center - Extended Care facility.
She is survived by her grandson Randal Lee Hill, Las Vegas, and all of Kathryn's special friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Ann Helmberger; husband Lee; daughter, Ila D. Hill and five brothers.
Ella E. Raffaell
Funeral services for Ella E. Raffaell, 79, of Williston, N.D., will be Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002 at 11 a.m. MST at the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview. Rev. Larry Quanbeck will officiate and burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
Ella was born August 17, 1922, at Zap, N.D., the daughter of Friedrich and Amalie (Messmer) Ginther. At an early age, she moved to Fairview with her family. She was educated in a rural setting.
On Nov. 1, 1940, she was married to Albert Saeman at Sidney. They made their home at Dodge, N.D. until they moved back to Fairview in 1947. After she raised her family, she worked at the City Cafˇ in Fairview for a time. Albert died at Sidney on June 21, 1973. Ella later married Ted Raffaell at Fairview in 1974. They farmed near Dore and lived in Fairview. Ted died in Sidney on July 18, 1984. In December of 1999, Ella moved to Williston and has been a resident of Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home for the past two years. She died at the home on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran church in Fairview. She enjoyed quilting, baking, canning, gardening, sewing, and shopping by mail.
She is survived by two sons, Allen Saeman and his wife, Cheryl of Williston and Wilbert Saeman of Salt Lake City, Utah; one daughter, Janice Dunn and her husband, Jim of Missoula; three brothers, Rienhold Ginther and his wife, Anna of Fairview, Harold Ginther and his wife, Hurleyn of Williston, and Dale Ginther of Columbia Falls; two sisters, Elma Schow and her husband, Virgil of Fairview, and Norma Servo and her husband, Garfield of Columbia Falls; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, two husbands and a sister, Louise Usselman.
Friends may call at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Williston on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and for one hour before service time at the church on Wednesday.
Shirley Wind
Funeral services for Shirley Wind of Savage were 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney, Pastors Mark and Maryann Morgenstern officiated. Musical selections were provided by Linda Lowry, Sharon Quinnell and Marge Thogersen. Casketbearers were Larry Hanzek, Bryan Carr, Terry Braun, Arnold Conradsen, Harlan Conradsen and Conrad Conradsen. Ushers were Jerry Nypen and Keith Nelson. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery in Savage under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Shirley Margaret (Olesen) Wind was born on Aug. 26, 1928 in Sidney to Nels Samuel and Alice Elizabeth (Hansen) Olesen. Shirley attended school in Sidney and graduated from Sidney High School in 1946. On Dec. 30, 1946, she married Louis Eugene Wind at the Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney. They farmed near Savage until Eugene's retirement in 1989, but remained at the family home in Savage. They had been married for 52 years when Eugene passed away on Sept. 1, 1998.
Shirley was homemaker and mother to her husband and four children. She found her greatest joy in doing special things for her children and grandchildren throughout her life. She was also known for being generously kind to all of the family pets. She enjoyed caring for a large garden and numerous flowerbeds and she also enjoyed baking and sewing. Her adventurous spirit found its way through numerous games of bridge and pinocle and was also known to accompany Eugene on lengthy motorcycle trips around the state. Later in life, she found time to resume her hobby of oil and watercolor painting.
Shirley passed away on Friday evening, Dec. 28, 2001 at her home north of Savage, following a long battle with cancer.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Gordon Wind of Polson and Lloyd (Susie) Wind of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; a daughter, Marian (Paul) Engelbrecht of Winchester, Ky.; four sisters, Audrey Sampson and Elsie (Ben) Eschenbacher both of Sidney, Betty (Harold) Propp and Jane (Bob) Doran all of Billings; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Eugene, son, Robert and brother, Robert.
Harry A. Johnson
Memorial services for Harry A. Johnson, 81, of Sidney, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at the Sidney Moose Lodge, with Father Ned Shinnick officiating. Musical selection will be provided by Larry Riggs and Marge Thogersen. Honorary casketbearers will be Monty Simonsen, Rudy Dore, D.D. "Mac" McGuire, Monty Merrill, Paul Hammond and Robert Woodfill. Ushers are Pat Corbett, Steve Johnson and Edgar Bazer. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Harry A. Johnson was born to parents, Albert Louis and Anna Marie (Eriksen) Johnson, on Nov. 9, 1920 at Intake, Mont. In 1924, Harry moved with his family to Narum Ranch at Fox Creek west of Sidney, where he was raised and attended Sanders School. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1939. In 1942, Harry entered the Army Air Corps where he served during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 and returned to Sidney. Harry was the bulk agent for Standard Oil in Richey, where he lived until 1962. He moved back to Sidney and started working for the Standard Oil Chemicals. Harry was united in marriage to Irene Holum on Feb. 14, 1962 in Sidney. They made their home in Sidney and Harry continued to work for Standard Oil Chemicals until 1972. Harry then went to work for Larson Motors, retiring from there on Dec. 31, 1985. His wife, Irene, died in November of 1984 and Harry remained in Sidney.
Harry was a life member of the VFW Post #4099, Sidney Moose Lodge and the Sidney Elks Lodge. He loved people, visiting and playing cards. He also enjoyed fishing at Ennis. Harry also enjoyed going to rodeo's and attended many National Finals Rodeo's.
Harry died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Sidney Health Center.
Harry is survived by his sister-in-law, Isabel Johnson of Sidney; brothers-in-law, Jack Bazer of Arngaard, N.D. and Conrad Pederson of Washington; special friend, Johanna Mann of Sidney and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Bazer and one as an infant; two brothers, Bert and Ray.
