Mary Alice Duncan
1913 - 2009
Mary Alice Duncan, 95, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Country Pines Retirement Home in Clinton, Utah.
She was born on May 17, 1913, in Layton, Utah, the daughter of Lloyd and Alice Moore. She was a nurse's aide at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. She spent 38 years working at the Madison Gift Shop in West Yellowstone, MT as an expert on Indian jewelry. Known as "Madison Mary," she was honest, a hard worker and a friend to co-workers and storekeepers all over town. She loved Yellowstone Park and the animals.
She married Leon Duncan who died in 1957.
She is survived by her daughter, Markie (George) White, Walterboro, S. C., many nieces, nephews, and 5 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brother, Virgil Moore, and sisters, Vera (Carter) Roundy, Elva (George) Bagshaw, and Ila (Edward) Tatton, and her son, Jerry Lee Lavender.
Graveside services were held April 20 in Utah

Dale A. Thompson, DDS
1928 - 2009
Set free at last into the peace of heaven on May 7, 2009, Dale Thompson is lovingly survived by his wife Mary, children, Susan, David, Doug, Jenny, grandchildren, Kati, Scott, Liz, Beth, Mollie, Sara, Cole, Danny, Ben, and Rachel, sister Lois Gatehouse, numerous nephews and a niece, and many loyal friends. Born in Los Angeles to Penn and Bessie Thompson on June 28, 1928, he graduated from Occidental College and UCSF Dental School, then practiced pediatric dentistry in the Sacramento area until his retirement. He was honored to serve his community as a member and president of both the Carmichael Rotary Club and the Sacramento Dental Society. He resided in Seattle for the past eight years.
He cherished his many long summers spent in his home at Hebgen Lake where his kind and gentle spirit will live on eternally. Special thanks to his wonderful caregivers, including Providence Hospice of Seattle, to whom we are forever grateful. We also wish to thank all his Montana, California and Seattle friends who steadfastly offered their love and support. A private family celebration of his life was held at his daughter's home on Mothers' Day.
Memorials may be made in his name to The Madison River Foundation, P.O. Box 1527, Ennis, MT 59729.

Maria Castillo Trejo
1963 - 2009
Maria Castillo Trejo, age 45, passed away suddenly on April 7, 2009, from a stroke. She was born in Mexico City on August 19, 1963, and came to the United States eight years ago, settling in West Yellowstone.
Maria worked at the Holiday Inn and the Three Bear Lodge where she was named Employee of the Month numerous times. Everybody loved her there. She was a very happy person, a hard worker, a really good dancer and was there to help people when they needed her.
Maria is survived by her children, Daniela and Ricardo, who both work at the Holiday Inn, Juan Carlos and Jose Miguel and grandchildren David Jovanni and Ricardo Daniel in Mexico.
Her mother, Josefina Trejo, was taking care of her youngest son, Jose, and her grandchildren in Mexico while Maria worked here.
Her funeral was on April 12 in Mexico.

Alfred S. Donau, Jr.
1917 - 2009
Alfred S. "Al" Donau, Jr. A member of a Tucson pioneer family passed away at his home in Tubac, April 7, 2009. Al was born in Tucson on May 28, 1917. His father, Alfred S. Donau, Sr., was a cattle rancher and a member of the Arizona Territorial Legislature. His mother, Villette Hummel Donau, was one of Tucson's first female real estate and insurance agents. Al and his uncle, Don Hummel (former Mayor of Tucson) for 40+ years owned and operated summer concessions in three of America's finest National Parks: Lassen Park, California, Mt. McKinley, Alaska and Glacier Park, Montana.
Al was well respected in the tourism industry in Alaska and Montana. He was honored by the National Park Hospitality Association and the National Park Service for his years of commitment to the visitors of the National Parks. In the winters, from 1958 to 1982, Al and his wife Mary Frank "Frankie" Warren Donau operated the Rex Ranch, a guest/cattle ranch in Amado, Arizona. In the ranching years, you could find Al leading a ride on his horse "Joe" or preparing the food for his famous cast iron cookouts at Lupe Well. Al easily shifted from cowboy hats and boots to "wing tips" and business suits.
The last 11 years of his career were his favorite working for long time friends, Trev and Ellie Povah, owners of Hamilton Stores, Inc., West Yellowstone, Montana. Al was a true gentleman, he never forgot an important date, his handshake was his word, you could always count on him, he was a hard worker and he did everything in his power to give his family the best life he could. (It was great!).
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, "Frankie" Donau, Tubac; son, Alfred S. "Skip" Donau, III, Tucson; daughter, Jan (Hermann) Hastreiter, Tucson; son, Peter M. (Gail) Donau, Bozeman, Montana: daughter, Cathrine L. "Cha-Cha" Donau, Tubac and grandchildren, Hillary (Eric) Doll, Hermann C. "H.C" Hastreiter; Gunnar P., Tirzah L. and Shan M. Donau all of Tucson. Friends and family will miss his cowboy hat, stiff drinks, colorful expletives, jokes and fun parties he hosted! Thank you! Dad, we hope you are enjoying your pipe and a jigger of bourbon with good friends!

Kathryn Hoskins
1924 - 2009
Kathryn M. Hoskins, 84, of Idaho Falls, passed away March 29, following a stroke. She was surrounded by her family.
She was born December 19, 1924, in Downey, Idaho to Clinton John Mock and Winifred Evans Mock. She graduated from Wendell High School and attended the University of Idaho.
On February 7, 1943, Kathryn married her high school sweetheart and "flyboy" Paul Albert Hoskins in Moscow, Idaho. They lived in Bozeman, Wisdom, Lima, Deer Lodge and West Yellowstone, Montana and in Post Falls and Idaho Falls, Idaho. She shepherded her family through several moves to follow Paul in his career with the Forest Service.
Kathryn enjoyed reading, gardening, puzzles, sewing, tennis, sailing, skiing, canoeing and motorcycle riding. She was a member of various Protestant community churches. She will be best remembered for her deep love for her family and the unquestioned support for her children, and their children as well. She loved music all her life and instilled that love in her family.
She was so loved and will be missed by her husband, Paul; daughters, Kathleen Marie Hoskins-Eliason, Lake Stevens, Wash., and Marcia Diane Hoskins-McNeil (Jim Favinger), Big Timber, Mont.; sons, Alan Paul (Karen) Hoskins, Idaho Falls, and Daniel Jay (Jeanne) Hoskins, West Yellowstone; brother Robert (Faye) Mock; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marion Salvesen and Marge Renfrow; and one brother, Charlie Mock, and son-in-law, Kim Eliason.
A private family service with close friends and relatives will be held April 3 in Idaho Falls.

Billie B. Smith
1906 - 2009
Billie B. Smith of West Yellowstone passed away on March 13, 2009 in Renton, WA. She was 103. Just previous to her death she lived in Issaquah, WA where she made many friends. Billie, her parents, and two siblings, traveled from Missouri to Montana in 1906 and homesteaded at Cliff Lake in the Upper Madison. She graduated high school in California and went to college at the Eastern Montana College of Education where she earned a degree in Education. On Dec. 24, 1934 she married, Francis Smith of West Yellowstone and had a daughter, Sherlyn Smith in 1936. Billie worked as a school teacher in West Yellowstone for many years. She would often speak of her many students by name and had very fond memories of them.
After retiring from teaching, she and her husband Francis owned and operated The Rawhide and Wagon Wheel trailer courts along with the McQuade cabins in West Yellowstone. Billie was elected the first mayor of West Yellowstone, in 1966.
In the winter months her and Francis would warm up in Hemet California.
Billie said one of her greatest joys in life was music. She played many instruments including the piano. She also enjoyed many travels around the world and had numerous stories of her adventures. She loved going on cruises and bus tours abroad.
Billie is survived by grandchildren Rhett Henkel of Albany OR, Tina Hilderman of Seattle, great grandchild James Hilderman of Seattle and nephew Jerry Stalcup of Anacortes, WA. She also has many great neices and nephews including Ann Monforton of Bozeman and Lynnett Fink of LaConner, WA.
Billie was predeceased by her parents, Jerry and Catherine Womack, her daughter Sherlyn Smith in 1971, husband Francis Smith in 1981 and brother and sister, Clovas Womack and Glaydce Thompson both of Ennis.
A graveside Service will be held this summer at the Madison Valley Cemetery in Ennis, date to be determined.
Billie was a warm and caring person who lived a long and eventful life. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends and former students.

Warren Phillip Harvey
1925-2009
Dolores Jane Harvey
1930-2009
Wendy Harvey's parents passed away in March, with Wendy and her brothers Sean of Chicago, Ill. and Timothy of Hammond, Ind. at their bedsides in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
Warren Phillip Harvey was born May 18, 1925 in Riverside, Calif. and died March 9, 2009. Dolores Jane Harvey was born March 8, 1930 in Chicago Heights, Ill. and died March 15, 2009.
During WWII, Warren served in the US Navy on the USS Bunker Hill. He and Dolores met and married in Chicago in 1957.
Warren worked with the University of Chicago Space Research Lab, the Fermi Institute and with NASA. A retired homemaker, Dolores was active in church, crafts, sewing and gardening. Warren enjoyed his computer, fishing, music and showing movies. They enjoyed square dancing together, and were devoted to each other, their children and four grandchildren; Eleanor, Devlin, Donovan and Amelia.
