DOROTHY T. ANDERSON
Dorothy Teresa LaSalle Anderson died on March 10, 2005, of natural causes. Dorothy was born on March 19, 1904, in Havre, to Leon and Mary Jane (Bonneau) LaSalle. She was raised on a ranch in the Bear Paw Mountain in Havre. Dorothy was an enrolled member of the Little Shell Band of Chippewa Indians of Montana. She raised her nine children on her own during the Depression. She moved to Missoula in the early 40s. She worked at St. Patrick Hospital and Legendary Lodge. During later years she worked at various jobs, which included caring for several of her grandchildren. The past three years she resided at The Village Assisted Living Center in Missoula. Dorothy was a talented seamstress, cook, and caregiver. Last year she was honored by her children and their families on her 100th birthday. Dorothy is survived by eight of her nine children: sons, Leon Russell (Bud) (Seeley Lake), Larry (Patsy) Anderson, (Ronan), Robert Anderson (Lolo), Darold Anderson, Florence; and daughters Georgina (Jean) and husband Don King (Pasadena, CA), Lorena (Jeri) and husband Marv Formo (Helena), Helen and husband Alex Ghillany (Tacoma), and Delia (Sharon) Magee and her husband Merle (Cut Bank); her son-in-law Dean Wilcox (Florence), and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughter Dorothy Wilcox; siblings William, Patrick, and Adolph La Salle, Georgia (William) Felton, Leona (Frank) Ward, twins Leona Rose and Clara Agnes; parents Leon and Mary Jane LaSalle; as well as several grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated on March 19 in Missoula.
'T.J.' ANDERSON JR.
RONAN -- Thomas John "T.J." Anderson Jr., 13, who was born Jan. 21, 1992, died on March 4, 2005, at St. Luke Community Hospital because of an extremely enlarged heart. He is survived by his parents, Pastor Tom and Cindy Anderson; one sister, Sarah; one brother, Tyler; his grandparents, Marvin and Florence Twogood (Missoula) and Paul and Frances Anderson (Ronan); and many aunts, uncles and cousins. T.J. enjoyed a full life, traveling many years with his dad's shower unit to forest fires all over the country. Last summer he and his dad were able to go to Alaska and fish on the Tanana River along with his good buddy, Grandpa Paul. During Christmas vacation he and his family, along with grandparents, took a trip of a lifetime to Disneyland, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. T.J. loved and competed in several sports. He also enjoyed playing his trumpet in the Ronan Middle School Band. At home T.J. loved to cook. Funeral services were held on March 9 at the Ronan High School gymnasium. Interment followed at Ronan Cemetery. A memorial fund in T.J.'s name has been established at the Community Bank in Ronan.
THERESA ANTOINE
Theresa Lynn Antoine, "Teri Lynn," was born on June 10, 1970, in Ronan to Jimmy Antoine and Aggie Woodcock. She died on March 23, 2005. Teri Lynn lived most of her life on the Rez except for a few years that she traveled with her mother and brother. Although life at times was very hard on Teri Lynn she never stopped trying. Her children were the single most important thing in her life and although there were obstacles that prevented her from being with them they were never far from her thoughts or heart. She spoke of them often and you could find pictures of them and all her family on the walls of her home. Teri Lynn enjoyed beading and spending time in the woods. But her favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends. Although Teri Lynn lost her battle with drugs and alcohol, her spirit will live through her children. Teri Lynn was preceded in death by her son Baby Boy Tenas in 2000, her mother Aggie Woodcock George in August of 2004, her adoptive grandparents Kenny and Theresa Ness, her maternal grandmother Josephine Woodcock, maternal grandfather Leo Conko, paternal grandmother Suzie Antoine, paternal grandfather Frank Antoine, and aunts and uncle Billy Antoine, Dee Antoine, Rose Felix, Jeanette Conko Torosian, Geri Ashley Trahan and Harriet Woodcock. Teri Lynn is survived by her children Mitchell Parker, Sr. (Nicolette) of Hot Springs, Frank Parker Jr. of Missoula, and Cyrus Antoine of St. Ignatius; father Jimmy Antoine of Pablo; grandson Mitchell Parker Jr; brothers Marc Hill of Philadelphia, PA, Shawn Hill of Lewis Delaware and Guy Hill of Polson; sisters Jeanne Antoine of Ronan and Jami Antoine of Pablo; aunts Clara Bourdon of St. Ignatius, Rosemary Grove of Polson, Jackie Conko Castillo of Cusick, WA, Frannie Antoine of Ronan, Alice Goodman and Marion Andrew also of Ronan, Helen Benally of St. Ignatius; her uncle James McKee; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A traditional wake began March 26 at the Longhouse. Funeral services were conducted on March 29 at the Longhouse, with burial following in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
MADELINE BARNABY
RONAN -- Madeline Barnaby, 77, died on March 3, 2005, in Missoula at St. Patrick's Hospital. Born to Andrew and Ann (Joseph) Barnaby at Post Creek in 1927, Madeline was raised on the family farm and attended the Ursuline Academy in St. Ignatius. She met Joseph Weaselhead and they started their family in 1947 and lived in the Mission Valley and in Heart Butte. Madeline believed in the traditional values and was a firm Catholic. She loved making flowers and beading hats. She loved all her children and grandchildren and raised "Moose" Joshua. Madeline was the last surviving Barnaby of her generation. Preceding her in death were three brothers, Pete, Dave, Tom; and most recently Margaret Finley; two sons, Marven Weaselhead and Allan Weaselhead; one daughter, Stella; one grandson; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Surviving are Francis and Nightwind Weaselhead (Sumpter, OR), and Joseph and Linda Weaselhead, John Arnold, Gerald Weaselhead, JoAnn Hammer (all of Ronan); Betty Van Haverbeke and Madeline Weaselhead (Pablo), David Weaselhead (Bonners Ferry, ID), Dalon and Susan Weaselhead (St. Ignatius), Violet Weaselhead (Charlo), and Anthony Weaselhead (Missoula) and "Quai" her faithful companion; 23 grandchildren; as well as numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a very large extended family. A traditional wake began Friday at the Longhouse in St. Ignatius with the rosary being recited on Sunday at the Longhouse. Wake closing began Monday in the Longhouse and was followed by Mass in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. Interment followed in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
ARNOLD BAUER
RONAN -- Arnold Alfred Bauer died on March 6, 2005, at St. Luke's Community Hospital here of a heart attack. Arnold was born on Dec. 27, 1925, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, to Alfred and Alta (Leavitt) Bauer. He spent most of his life in the Charlo area. He spent some time in Missoula and Chandler, AZ. While working in Missoula at the sugar factory and with the railroad, he married his high school sweetheart, Eva Evans, on Dec. 31, 1947. They moved north of Charlo in the spring of 1948. Arnold farmed and worked various jobs, including the reclamation, Bison Range, seed house, Plum Creek sawmill and Harrah Honey Farm. On Aug. 22, 1956, Arnold and Eva were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple. Arnold served in the Bishopric for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Charlo Ward, as well as numerous other church callings. In 1996 Arnold and Eva served a full-time mission for the church in Macon, GA. Arnold loved softball and a good foot race. He played with the church team as their pitcher for many years. He loved riding his horses and organizing several winning teams for the annual Charlo "Over the Hill" races. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, two sisters and two grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Eva, to whom he was married for 57 years; three brothers and their wives, Milo and Pat (Logan, UT), Blaine and Beverly (Newport, WA), and Allen Dean and Connie (Billings); two sisters, Nola (Orson) Boyce (Ephraim, UT), and Edna Birch (Shelley, ID); eight daughters and their spouses, Mary Jane and Irvin Long (Charlo), Myra (Mary Jane Elder, close family friend) (Poplar), Lila and Ted Reed (Idaho Falls, ID), Anita and Bryan Gambles (St. George, UT), Nina and Lance Broshar (Stevensville,) LuJuana and Rich Bick (Missoula), Eva Jean (Dave) Moreland of Athol, Idaho, and Nadine (Doug) Howell of Idaho Falls; and a son, Alfred (Lisa) of Ronan. He has 39 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren with more to be born in June. Funeral services were held on March 9 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ronan. Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Missionary Fund.
MARLIN R. BRACKNEY
POLSON -- Marlin R. Brackney, 67, died on March 7, 2005, in a vehicle accident. He was born May 28, 1937, in Vermillion, S.D., the son of Lillian and Hoyt Brackney. Marlin married Betty Zandstra in Mobridge, S.D., in 1955. The couple soon moved to Great Falls when he got a job with the Great Northern Railroad. In 1962, he began working with the Montana Department of Highways where he was the division office engineer until his retirement in 1988. In 1993, he and his wife moved to Polson, where he was an active member and a trustee of Mission Valley Elks Lodge No. 1695. He enjoyed woodworking, bowling and golf, and playing poker. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Arlys Johnson of Deer Lodge; and a granddaughter, Courtenay Rae Jean. His family includes his wife Betty; three daughters, Pam Jean and her husband Ernie (Missoula), Laura Wiles and her husband Duane (Spokane) and Kathy Osweiler and her husband John (Kalispell); three brothers, Richard Brackney and wife Karen and Pat Brackney and wife Edna (all of Anchorage, AK), and John Brackney and wife Barbara (Great Falls); seven grandchildren, Ernie, Erik and Kyle Jean, Roger Cummings and his wife Katie, Nina Negrete and Tanner and Brock Osweiler; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services to be held in Polson will be scheduled and announced at a later date. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Diabetes Association or the Missoula Humane Society.
FRENCHY BURLAND
ARLEE -- Francis O. "Frenchy" Burland, 68, died at his home on March 21, 2005. He was born on Dec. 24, 1936, to Olivia (Oily Morigeau) and Francis Burland. He was a member of the Salish Kootenai Tribes. He had an older sister, Patty, who died in infancy. Shortly after his birth, his mother died and he went to live with his grandparents, Collette and Octave Morigeau, who raised him as their own. He attended Arlee schools where he graduated in 1954 and then worked at various jobs including the Van Evans Mill in Missoula. In 1957, he married Loretta Blood and began working for the Bureau of Indian as a mechanic/machine operator and bookkeeper for the Irrigation Project. In 1962 he continued with the BIA as a Reality Specialist/Officer and retired as the head of the department after 34 years of service. From there he briefly worked for the Tribes before permanently retiring. Frenchy was active in the community by serving on the Arlee School Board from 1968 through the early Œ80s. He served as the Board Chair from 1977 through 1980 and received an honorary diploma at the end of his service. During his tenure, he was instrumental in working through a defeated bond issue to add on the elementary multi purpose room, library and classrooms. He was also a Boy Scout leader for about eight years while his sons were Scouts. Frenchy also volunteered for the Arlee Fire Department from 1964 to 1977. Beginning in his teens, Frenchy began a life-long hobby of mechanics and cars. He was particularly fond of his 1960 Chevy that he drag raced often in Spokane. He passed this love of cars on to his sons and daughter. After retirement, he and his sons opened the Jocko River Auto Sales. Frenchy and Loretta had three sons, Richard, David and John, and one daughter, Lawna. Loretta passed away in 1982. He was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Paul Morigeau, Evelyn Grenier, Josephine Steele, Joe (Bud) Morigeau, Carl Morigeau, Dorothy (Sis) Shelby, Azicda (Sis), Sonny Burland, and the twins. He is survived by children and their spouses: Richard and Kelly, David and Amy, and John, and daughter, Lawna and T.J.; his siblings Abby Gardipe, Barbara Mann, Florence Gehring, Dick Burland, Betty Hernandez, Janice Durant, Sharon Whiting, Marilyn Howell, Tracy Burland and his step-mother Olivine Burland. A dedicated grandfather, he helped with the raising of his granddaughter, Chelsey Garfield. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Shannon, Chelsey, Sarah, Holly, Trae, and Dominic; and one great-grandchild, Cherai (and one on the way); as well as a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 24 at the Arlee Community Center. Interment followed in the Jocko Catholic Cemetery.
ADDIE BURNS
USK -- Adeline Loretta "Addie" Burns died here on March 3, 2005, of respiratory arrest. Burns, 75, was a tribal elder and served on the Tribal Council several times during her life. Burns had a nickname for everyone, and continued to call people by their childhood name well past their childhood years. Burns worked as a community health representative for the Kalispels. Burns was born on Dec. 1, 1929, the daughter of Willie Tom and Mary Bigsmoke in Usk. Her first husband, John Baptiste Nomee, died in 1969 and she later remarried Michael Burns. Michael also preceded her in death. Some of her favorite hobbies were spending time at the casino and crocheting. Survivors include her three sons, Eugene Nomee, Rodney "RJ" (and Susie) Nomee, and James Bigsmoke (all of Usk); four daughters, Lynne Walks-On-Top (Wellpinit), Joanna (and Mike Treetop) Nomee (Usk), Patricia (and Gordon) Songers (Arlee), Lillian (and Tony Surface) Nomee (Pendleton, OR); two sisters, Alice Blackbear Ignace and Sue Finley; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Besides her two husbands, Burns was preceded in death by her son Andy. Funeral Mass was celebrated on March at the Kalispel Community Center. Burial followed at the Kalispel Cemetery in Usk.
MARTHA CLINKENBEARD
MISSOULA -- Martha "Ellen" Clinkenbeard died on March 11, 2005, at Riverside Health Care Center here of natural causes. Ellen was born April 8, 1922, to William and Nancy McEntire in Malakoff, Texas. She grew up in Texas where she and her siblings had prairie dogs for pets. She never lost her Texas drawl and that was always the first question people asked her when they heard her speak. It was always with pride that she would say she was from "Texas." She met and married Roy Clinkenbeard at the early age of 16. They were married on Jan. 5, 1938, in Safford, AZ. They had four children. In 1954, they moved to Barstow, CA. They lived there until the late '70s when they moved to Montana to enjoy their retirement years. She enjoyed reading and visiting with her friends from the Missoula Manor where she lived for many years until recently. She had looked forward to making new friends at Riverside until a stroke took its toll. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 1987, and her son James in 1981. She was the youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. Survivors include daughter Virginia (David) Bickerstaff (Whittier, CA); sons Arlan Clinkenbeard (Ronan) and Larry (Dorothy) Clinkenbeard (Arlee); 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren. Graveside services were conducted on March 16 at Meade Mortuary in Barstow. Pallbearers were grandsons Allen Bickerstaff, Lee and Jason Clinkenbeard and Clint Rice, and great-grandsons David Bickerstaff and Trevor Rice. The family suggests memorials be made to Missoula Manor Endowment Fund, 909 W. Central Ave., Missoula, MT 59801.
VIVIAN B. CONNELL
POLSON -- Vivian B. Connell, 83, died of natural causes on March 11, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital here. Vivian is survived by her daughter, Ada McCay (Pablo); son Richard Connell (Polson); sisters Betty Lou Khein (Colorado) and Joy Saterlee (Washington); and brother Cecil (Betty) Connell (Missoula). A graveside memorial service was held on March 12 at the Lakeview Cemetery.
