Howard Reid Jacobson

Howard Reid Jacobson, age 51, owner and operator of Jacobson's Jewelry in Shelby, passed away Saturday after suffering a massive heart attack during the Oilfield Tourney at the Marias Valley Golf and Country Club in Shelby.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 20 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Shelby with graveside military honors in the veteran's section of Mountain View Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church or to the Marias Valley Golf and Country Club.

Howard was born June 19, 1949, to Harry and Ruth (Sheill) Jacobson in Plentywood. He graduated from Plentywood High School in 1967 and enlisted in the Army, where he served in the light infantry in the 7th Calvary in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and attended Paris (TX) Junior College and Great Falls VoTech. He married Lynn House on Sep. 4, 1976. They had one son, Wade, and later divorced.

Howard moved to Shelby in 1979 and the next year he purchased Pfansmith Jewelry, which became Jacobson's Jewelry. He was still operating the store at the time of his death. He married Eve Erickson on Jan. 19, 1985, in Great Falls.

Howard was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, the Elks, Jaycees, the Shelby Chamber of Commerce, the Shelby Merchants Committee, the Marias Valley Golf and Country Club, the VFW and Shelby Pool League.

Howard loved to golf, play poker and pool and read. He was also a history buff and was very interested in politics and current events.

Survivors include his wife, Eve, of Shelby; sons Wade and Derek Jacobson of Shelby; daughter, Carla Jacobson of Shelby; brother, Jule Jacobson of Plentywood; sister Natasha Morton of Hardin and a grandson, Andrew Jacobson of Shelby. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Tracy Hinz, Cami Sain, Allyssa Jacobson, Jamie Morton, Ronda Strahan, Roger Monton, Will Erickson, Mike Erickson, Andy White, Sara White and Tim White.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl.

Paul Fernand DubeĢ, 74, passed away on June 10 of esophageal cancer at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, Wash.

Memorial services were held at Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle, Wash. on June 13.

Paul was born Oct. 13, 1927 in Montegue Township in Turner's Falls, Mass. He was a graduate of Officer Cadet School and served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Italy. He was an accomplished pianist and personal friend to the late, great Frankie Carle. He spent many years entertaining in piano bars. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte (Kramer) DubeĢ in 1966 and continued to live in Shelby until 1972.

He is survived by Dave and Teri DubeĢ and children Christina and Andrew of Helena; Penny (DubeĢ) and Chuck Pefley and children Liesel, Heidi and Dalwyn of Seattle, Wash.; Dan and Dawn DubeĢ and children Anthony and Troy of Puyallup, Wash.; Jenny (DubeĢ) and Bill Hjelmstad and children David Joe, Shannon, Jennifer and Allison of Casper, Wyo.; Judy (DubeĢ) and Tom Benson and children Jessica, Jordon and Rachelle of Shelby and Jackie Bennett of Santa Ana, Calif. He is also survived by his wife, Jacquelyn (Dempsey) DubeĢ, brothers Robert DuBay and Henry DuBay and sister Evangeline DubeĢ and six great-grandchildren.

Robert J. "Jerry", "R.J." Cunningham, 48, formerly of Sunburst, died June 11 at the CareMeridan Rehab Hospital in Fairfax, Calif., due to work-related injuries suffered in the North Toole County oil fields in 1997.

No services are planned and cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Sunburst Cemetery. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the North Toole County High School Vocational Education Department or the American Cancer Society.

Jerry was born Jan. 30, 1953 in Kingston, R.I. to Robert and June (Armstrong) Cunningham, Sr. The first 15 years of his life was spent traveling from base to base as an Air Force dependent. After the death of his mother in 1968, the family moved to Sunburst where Jerry graduated from North Toole County High School in 1972.

Jerry worked the rigs in the Toole County oil fields, a job he completely enjoyed. He has been greatly missed by his family, friends and co-workers since the time of his accident. He was extremely well read with a great interest in history, especially regarding military weapons. Jerry remained single throughout his life, but was a wonderful uncle to his sisters' children. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and adding to their ever-growing stuffed animal collection.

Survivors include three sisters, Sondra (Ginger) Threlfall of Quartz Hill, Calif., Rene Rees of Tillamook, Ore., and Mary Ann Kohles of Sunburst; five nieces, four nephews and three great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.

Johanna M. Chattin

Johanna Marie (Mortensen) Chattin, 90, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at a Boise care center. Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel. A service will take place this summer in Browning, near her beloved Glacier National Park.

She was born Nov. 14, 1910, at Luverne, N.D., to Morten and Henrietta Mortensen. As a first generation Danish-American, she grew up on a small farm in North Dakota with 10 brothers and sisters. This was a happy and golden time for her. She spoke often of this period in her life, recalling both the hard work and the warm holiday gatherings.

As a young adult she ventured out to live in St. Paul, Minn., where she worked as a waitress and was later joined there by her sister, Mary. In 1937 she began working summers at the Great Northern Railroad Lodge in Glacier National Park. Hiking the trails in Glacier was a wonderful experience for her. She later met, and married Charles "Irv" Chattin on Aug. 19, 1939, at Kalispell. Johanna was warmly welcomed into Irv's large family, all members of the Blackfeet (Pikuni) Nation on the reservation in Browning. This is where she would raise a family and spend most of her adult life. She clearly loved the rich culture and enjoyed the large family gatherings and picnics in Glacier Park.

She worked various jobs, finally settling on a career of over 20 years as cook at the Browning Elementary School.

In 1985 she and Irv moved to Boise. She liked going for pleasant walks near the Boise River, taking short trips to Jackpot, Nev., and just spending time with her family.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Barbara Chattin of Boise; granddaughters, Stacy Lelah and Dana Sefman of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Lelah; sisters, Mary Jacobsen of Cooperstown, N.D., and Henrietta Gervino of Valley City, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irv; a daughter, Helen; sisters, Gertrude Sanden, Esther Jensen and Marie Mortensen; brothers, Christian, Tom, Hank, Nels and George.

Taresa Sue Minarik

Taresa Sue "Mouse" Minarik, 32, formerly of Glendive, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City after complications following childbirth.

A vigil service was held Monday with Mass of Christian Burial held Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive. Rite of Committal followed in the Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive.

She was born Mar. 9, 1968, in Oak Harbor, Wash., the daughter of Edward and Donna (Goodboe) Minarik. She was raised and educated in Oak Harbor before moving to Montana with her family in 1974. They lived in various Montana communities before they moved to Glendive in 1980. In 1987, she graduated from Dawson County High School. She attended Dawson Community College in Glendive and Coiffure Excellence in Billings. In 1989, she returned to Glendive. She was a certified nurses aid and an orthodontist's assistant.

Her overwhelming interest in life was raising her children. She was a loving mother and enjoyed attending their many events, especially AAU wrestling and swimming.

Minarik is survived by five children, Ashly Marie Warrenburg and Erin Dawn Warrenburg, both of Baker, Paul Michel Geiger and Freddie-Leigh Francis Geiger, both of Baker and Glendive and Teight Minarik Madler of Baker; a special friend, Rich Madler and his daughters, Josey Mae and Kallie Ann, all of Baker; her parents, Edward and Donna Minarik of Browning; four sisters, Kathie Lehman and her husband, Ben, of Bozeman, Michelle Minarik, Joelyn Brown of Sequim, Wash., and Hope Gilligan of Glendive; a brother, Boyd Mink and his wife, Peggy, of Two Rivers, Wisc.; eight nephews; nine nieces; and a very special friend, Francis "Zeak" Geiger of Glendive.

Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive was in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Higgins

Marjorie Joy (Peterson) Higgins, 84, died at Glacier County Medical Center of natural causes on Feb. 21, 2001.

A vigil service was held Sunday at St. Margaret's Catholic Church with her funeral being held Monday at St. Margaret's. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Born Dec. 13, 1916, in Great Falls, she attended Winkler Grade School, Cut Bank High School and business college in Arizona. On Mar. 13, 1941, she and George Higgins were married in Havre. She worked in the extension and assessors office as a secretary at the Glacier County Courthouse and was a homemaker. Community activities included member of St. Margaret's, American Legion Auxiliary, Bridge club and Women of Today. She enjoyed knitting mittens for the coat trees, gardening and flowers and she loved her family.

Higgins is survived her sons and their wives, George and Pam Higgins of Wauconda, Ill., John Higgins of Shelby and Jim and Debbie Higgins of Cut Bank; sisters, Jewel Wolk of Cut Bank and Sherdie Bucher of Wasilla, Alas; a brother, Robert Peterson of Seattle; three grandchildren, Toni, Nikki and David Higgins; and one great-grandchild, Danisha Higgins.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and a daughter, Mary Lynn Higgins.

Memorials are suggested to the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch.

Day Family Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Laura Pellett

Laura (Sis) Johanna Welch Pellett, 88, died at the Glacier County Nursing Home in Cut Bank on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 of natural causes.

She was cremated and private family services will be held at a later date.

She was born Nov. 16, 1912, in Otto, Wyo. On Oct. 6, 1930, she and Theron Raymond Pellett were married in Shelby. He died in 1992.

She and her husband owned and operated the Four Corners CafŽ near Oilmont until 1959. She ran the Sports Club in Shelby from 1959-61. She and her husband purchased and operated the Capital CafŽ in Shelby from 1961-67. They moved to Miles City and she was the office manager for her son, Bill's dental practice, for the next 32 years, retiring at 86 years young. She moved to Cut Bank in 1999 where she lived until her death.

Pellett enjoyed gardening, crocheting, fishing, playing bridge and traveling.

Survivors include two sons, Theron Robert Pellett of Cut Bank and William Russell Pellett and wife, Barbara, of Whitefish; five grandchildren, Penne Swenson and husband, Richard, of Cut Bank, Russ Pellett and wife, Misty, of Dillon, Carrie Donaldson and husband, Craig, of Portland, Ore., Brad Pellett and wife, Carolyn, of Austin, Texas, and Eric Pellett of Portland; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan and Liam Donaldson, Brock, Derek and Tarin Pellett and Kyle, Naomi and Eve Swenson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Richard DeLoy Pellett; her parents, George and Hazel (Nye) Welch; and a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Pellett.

Memorials are suggested to the Wishing Well Fund, c/o Sonja Ray, Glacier County Medical Center, Cut Bank, MT 59427.

Day Family Funeral Home handled arrangements.
