Duane L. Clark Sr
Duane L. Clark Sr., 71, of Whitefish passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002.
He was born on Feb. 8, 1931, in Linch, Neb., to Elmer and Maude Clark. He moved to the Flathead Valley and attended schools in Whitefish and Kalispell. Duane became a certified welder, worked for the railroad for 18 years and Columbia Falls Aluminum Company for 19 years. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and crafts. He was very active in bowling, and was put in the bowling Hall of Fame in 1999. Duane married Bernice Stevens in 1949 in Kalispell and they made their home in Whitefish. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Maude, brother Elm and son Danny. Duane is survived by his wife, Bernice in Whitefish, two sons, Dale Clark of Lake Blaine and Duane Clark Jr. of Whitefish, three daughters, Mary Jane Foss of Whitefish, Ruby Foss of Whitefish, and Emily Williams of Kalispell, three brothers, Dave, Don and Herman Clark, 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish, Rev. David V. Kauffman officiating.
Edna Mae Astrope
Edna Mae Astrope, 78, a longtime Whitefish resident, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at North Valley Hospital in Whitefish, of natural causes.
She was born in Sheridan, Wyo., on April 24, 1924, the daughter of Andrew and Annie Helton. She was raised and educated in Hardin, and then met and married Clarence Astrope on Aug. 1, 1942, in Tacoma, Wash. He preceded her in death in 1978. She then met her companion, Alden Dubia, in 1981, and he died in 1995. Edna Mae loved to read, was very knowledgeable in medicine, enjoyed bingo, hand crafts, sewing, baking, and cooking and making beaded jewelry. She was a member of the Whitefish Women of the Moose, the Rebeccas, Whitefish V.F.W. women's auxiliary, and the North Valley Alliance Church. Edna Mae was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers: Robert, Leo, Lawrence and Raymond Helton. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Howell in Pasco, Wash.; two grandsons, Craig Howell in Albany, Ore., and Derek Howell in Pasco; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Renee Howell; one great-grandson, Jarrod Evan Howell; a sister, Lavorna Benedict in Sheridan, Wyo.; several nieces and nephews; and by many dear friends in Whitefish. Visitation was held from 2-6 p.m. Monday at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Chrysta Bourne officiating. Rites will also be given by the Whitefish Women of the Moose. Burial will follow at the Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kalispell.
Bertha L. Hall
Bertha L. Hall, 72, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at the Heritage Place in Kalispell after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Whitefish. Bertha grew up and was raised in the Flathead Valley except for about seven years when she lived in the Seattle area. She married Theron Hall in Whitefish, in 1950. Together they traveled and lived in various places as her husband's job required. She was a waitress for several years at the El Rancho as well as other places, including the Moose Lodge in Kalispell, where she was a member for many years. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. She was a kind-hearted woman who was always willing to help others any way she could. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theron Hall; her parents; one brother; six sisters; and one stepson. She is survived by her son, Doug Hall of Kalispell; three stepsons, Art, Joseph and Donald Hall; one sister, Jeri Cardin and husband, Dennis, of Kalispell; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Moose Lodge #1922, P.O. Box 5286, Kalispell MT 59901. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Johnson Mortuary and Crematory.
Elmav Brown
Elmav L. Brown, 80, of Whitefish, died Nov. 30, 2002.
She was born Jan. 17, 1916, at home in Blakesley to Burl and Pearl DeSilva.
She was married to Chester Brown on March 11, 1934, in Winnett.
She moved to Whitefish with her husband in 1937. She was active in Royal Neighbors, RSVP, where she served as a board member and senior citizen center, where she served terms as vice president and president. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Virgil and Chester, and one granddaughter.
She is survived by a daughter, Toody Vasil of Whitefish and a son, Jerry and his wife, Bobi of Havre; four grandchildren, Dee Young of Columbia Falls, Jodie Bowers and husband, Harry of Whitefish, Shane Brown of Great Falls, Kiel Brown and wife, Nancy of Great Falls; five great-grandchildren, Keeley Young, H. L. and Jasmine Bowers, and Kier and Amanda Brown.
Graveside service will be held today, Thursday, Dec. 5, at Conrad Memorial Cemetery, with David Kaufman, Sr., officiating.
The family suggests memorials sent to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Austin Funeral Home.
Isabel A. "Toni" Irwin
Toni Irwin was called to our Lord on Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.
Toni was born at home in Anamoose, North Dakota on Oct. 30, 1916. She was the eighth and last child born to Anna Zimmerman and Peter Webber. She had four more siblings by stepfather Theodore Allers.
She met and married Chuck Irwin on Oct. 6, 1935, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. The Irwins moved to Whitefish in the 1940s and started the Hutch Chuck Sporting Goods store with her partners Alice and Orman Hutchinson. They made fine-crafted boats. This in turn developed into the Whitefish Boat Club where Toni was secretary treasurer for close to 40 years. Later they built and operated the "Downtowner" until 1970.
This Whitefish patron was instrumental in developing many activities. She was a greeter for the Winter Carnival, hosted many regatta races, was a Stumptown historian and belonged to golf and bridge clubs.
Toni was an avid traveler and outdoorswoman. She had many happy memories of hunting, deep-sea fishing, skiing, hiking, picking huckelberries and canning peaches. She was a long time member of St. Charles Catholic Church, the Women of the Moose, and Soroptimists.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Chuck, in 1972 and her 10 siblings.
Toni is survived by her sister, Sylvia Calkins and husband George of Fargo, N.D.. Also related are numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a wealth of friends.
A vigil service was held at St. Charles Catholic Church on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002. Rev. Charles Roman officiated. Cremation has taken place and burial will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Toni wished any contributions be made to the Soroptimists, Stumptown Historical Society or North Valley Food Bank.
Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish is in charge of the arrangements.
Edward Janoka Pound
Edward Janoka Pound, 70, of Rigby, Idaho, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in Pocatello, Idaho.
Edward was born Aug. 6, 1932, in Columbia Falls, a son of Victor James Pound and Florance Landon Pound. He attended schools in Kalispell and Whitefish.
He married Judy Rae Frame on April 2, 1971, in Havre. They were later divorced.
He worked as a long-haul truck driver most of his life. He worked for Washington Construction as a truck driver in the mining business, and as an equipment operator building the Denver International Airport.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography.
Survivors include one daughter, Misty and husband Sheldon Harris, of Ririe, Idaho; one son, Grant Edward Fisher of Kalispell; three sisters, Doreen and husband Wesley Grilley, and Leora "Tootsie" and husband Lowell O'Myer, both of Kalispell, and Shela and husband Juan Garcia of Brighton, Colo.; three brothers, Grant and wife Florence Pound, of Kalispell, Victor "Pete" and wife Toni Pound, of Maricopa, Ariz., and Terry Pound of Kalispell; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carol "Cappy" Pound.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glacier Cemetery in Kalispell.
The family visited with friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Johnson Funeral Home in Kalispell.
Burial will be in Glacier Cemetery, under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby, Idaho, and Johnson Funeral Home in Kalispell.
Cecil N. Thompson
Cecil N. Thompson, 71, of Whitefish died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002.
He was born on May 28, 1931 in Kalispell to Lawrence and Evalene Thompson.
Cecil joined the U.S. Air Force at 17 and received his high school diploma in service. He served his country for 20 years; retired as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. After retirement from the service he went to work in many areas, management, resort management and as a driver for a local bus company.
His hobbies were golf, fishing, hunting, lumber jacking, family reunions.
He was an active member of the Shriners and Moose lodge for many years.
Cecil will be missed and his memory will live on through his many survivors.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia L. Roney; they were married on April 23, 1950, in Champaign, Ill.
He is also survived by five children and spouses as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sheron Ramaley, husband John and two children Michael and Patricia of Minneapolis, Karen Sparks, husband Robert Shanks and two sons Allen and David of Columbia Falls, Lawrence Thompson, wife Debbie and five boys Jeremy and Matthew Hamilton, Matthew, Marshal and Mitchell Thompson of Houston, Mo., Sandra Thompson and Donald Baumann and two sons Adam and Robert Graham of Minneapolis, Gary Thompson, wife Cindy and two daughters Stefanie and Rebecca of Chandler, Ariz., great-grandchildren Bryan, Kalyb, Ciera, Trevor, Tristin, Kaileen, Leilani, Shanel, Konnor and Treavor.
Also surviving Cecil are his stepmother Leona West of Whitefish, brother LeRoy Thompson of Spokane, Wash., sisters Carol Naber of Havre, and Ida Braihwaite of Kennewick, Wash.
Visitation was on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish, Rev. David V. Kauffman officiating, with Moose Rites.
Interment followed at Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kalispell.
Military graveside honors were presented by the United Veterans of the Flathead Valley and Shriners Masonic Rites.
