James Edward Cass

James Edward "Jim" Cass died March 21, 2001, at a nursing home in Seattle. He was born in Bozeman on May 28, 1927, to Edward and Verna Allegar Cass. Jim attended schools in Bozeman.

On Aug. 14, 1945, Jim enlisted in the Army, serving until Nov. 18, 1946, when he received a medical discharge. After his discharge he worked with his father in the Cass Mattress and Upholstery business until his father retired. He then opened his own shop in Bozeman, and later moved his business to Sandpoint, Idaho, and then to Seattle.

Jim was a member of the Gallatin Masonic Lodge since he was initiated on March 8, 1961.

He loved music, played the cornet in the service, played the organ, but his special love was his accordion.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond; sister, Ruth; and a niece, Linda (Cass) Gossack.

He is survived by two sisters, Verna (Sherman) Day of Seattle, and Grace (Ben) Vail of Bozeman; brother, Robert of Battle Ground, Wash.; and sister-in-law, Katherine "Katie" Cass of Bozeman; 10 nieces, seven nephews, numerous great-nieces and nephews, and two cousins.

Cremation has taken place; a family memorial with internment of ashes will take place in Bozeman this summer.

Neva Jeanette Vasboe

Neva Jeanette Vasboe, 80, of Rogue River, Ore., died Feb. 8, at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, Ore.

A memorial service was held at Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor Don Carlson officiating. Interment was in Medford; Ore. Hillcrest Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Neva was born Nov. 5, 1919, in Penn, N.D. on Sept. 24, 1938, she married Carl N. Vasboe in Shelby. The couple moved to Casper, Wyo., where Norman worked at the Texaco Refinery. In 1975, after retirement, they moved to Rogue River. He died in October 1993.

Neva was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Grants Pass and also a member of the Rogue River Republicans Group, the Rimrock Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Scandinavian Heritage Club and the Sons of Norway. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters; Eunice Olson and Karin Blakely, both of Grants Pass and Kathleen Hardy of Falls Church, Va.; one son, Carl N. Vasboe II of Casper; a sister, Francis Leary of Anacortes, Wash, a brother, Walter Gessner of Woodbridge, Calif; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

George Zimmer

George Zimmer, 83, died in Sacramento, Calif., of natural causes.

No memorial is planned.

He was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Antler, N.D. to Andrew and Jensine Zimmer. He married Hazel Jenner on Nov. 17, 1937, in Bottineau County, N.D. The couple moved to Cut Bank where he was a carpenter and worked at a service station during the 1940s and 1950s. They moved to California in the 1960s where he worked until he retired from the Carpenters Union.

Zimmer is survived by his wife of Middletown, Calif.; sons, Andrew Zimmer of Auburn, Calif., and Gary Zimmer of Nice, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Ardythe Zimmer Gill, and a grandson, Clinton Andrew Zimmer, preceded him in death.

Condolences may be sent to Hazel at 18804 Deer Hill Road, Middletown, CA 95461.

Shirley C. Lennick

Shirley C. Lennick, 72, of Columbia Falls, died at her home Aug. 13, 2000.

Funeral services were held Aug. 18 at Fellowship Alliance Church of Columbia Falls with Pastor Harley Bennett officiating. Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Lennick was born March 15, 1928, in Hazen, N.D., to Gus and Olga (Buchman) Krieger. She married Art Lennick Dec. 1, 1944. The couple farmed in the Glenn Ulin area for 15 years, then moved to the Columbia Falls area in 1957 where her husband worked for the Anaconda Company. She worked at Todd's Cafe and later at School District 6. Lennick then worked at the B&B Grocery for the next 24 years retiring in 1990.

She will be remembered for her devotion to her family as well as for the many crocheted afghans, potholders and other items she distributed to her many friends and family members. She was an active member of the Fellowship Alliance Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Audrey Larson of Filer, Idaho; sons, Garfield Lennick of Medford, Ore., Mervel Lennick of Cut Bank and Rodney Lennick of Columbia Falls; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Memorials are suggested to Fellowship Alliance Church of Columbia Falls.

Columbia Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Elaine Zawada

Elaine L. (Nermyr) Zawada, 54, of Stevensville, died June 13, 2001, near Florence as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Her funeral was held Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cut Bank with burial following in Crown Hill Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 21, 1946, in Charleston, S.C., and graduated from Cut Bank High School in 1964. On Sept. 14, 1991, she and John Zawada were married in Cut Bank. She worked at JCPenney.

Her hobbies and interests centered around her three children, two stepchildren and six grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and loved life.

Zawada is survived by her husband, John of Stevensville; her mother, Wilma Nermyr of Cut Bank; daughters, Jaime Ballensky of Spokane, Wash., and Danelle Peterson of Hayden Lake, Idaho; a son, Scott Babowicz of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Jerry Nermyr of Spokane; six grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Emma Zawada of Billings; a stepdaughter, Wendy Zawada of Fishtail; and a stepson, Matt Zawada of Billings.

Preceding her in death was her father, Neil Nermyr in 1990.

Memorials are suggested to the Glacier Co. EMS, 805 2nd St. SE, Cut Bank, MT 59427.

Day Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Donald John Stratman

Donald John Stratman, 81, of Shelby, passed away June 12 at Marias Medical Center.

Memorial services were held on June 18 at Whitted Funeral Chapel. Burial of ashes followed in the Mountain View Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the Shelby Sagebrush Food Pantry or the Children's Leukemia Fund.

Donald was born April 5, 1920, at Hartington, Neb., to Joseph and Sophie (Beckman) Stratman. He moved to Canada with his family as a youth, where he was educated. He moved to Shelby in 1936 and worked for the Great Northern Railroad for several years. During World War II he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He later worked as a laborer for the City of Shelby until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the Catholic Church, AARP and a supporter of the disabled veterans and Father Flanigan's Boys Town.

Don enjoyed collecting belt buckles and coins, reading, music and snoozing.

Survivors include his sisters, Margaret Foss of Great Falls, Doreen Stratman and LaVerne Parker, both of Shelby and Leona Penberthy of Andover, Minn.; brothers Gerald J. Stratman, Sr. and LeRoy C. Stratman, both of Shelby and numerous nieces and nephews.
