ALDEN LOSE
Alden Lose, age 74, of Billings, formerly of Belfry, lost his brief and sudden battle with cancer June 25, 2004 at Deaconess Billings Clinic.
Alden was born March 9, 1930 in Belfry, the son of Paul and Nellie Lose. After completing high school in Kelso, Wash., he served our country in the United States Navy from 1949-1950. He was united in marriage to Maxine Thom on Feb. 13, 1952 in Red Lodge. The young couple farmed in Belfry from 1952-1955. They moved to Longview (Kelso), Wash. in 1955, where Alden worked at Red & White Grocery. In 1956, they moved to Billings. Alden worked at Yellowstone County Implement (John Deere) from 1956 until his retirement in 1984.
Alden had a zest for life and a love for the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping throughout his beloved Beartooths were his favorite things. His life-long passion for fishing always had him walking the banks of any one of a number of his favorite “cricks.” Ask anyone. He knew all the best fishing spots. One thing he liked as much as catching his limit was a good game of cards. He would play for hours with family and friends. Alden also had a knack for finding treasures at garage sales.
Yes, Alden was an excellent outdoorsman, but in his neighborhood he was really known for his acts of kindness. A walk through his neighborhood would harvest story after story about how he has helped his neighbors with everything from snow removal to home repairs. He was honored as the Billings Gazette Neighbor of the Year in 1981 and 1999. As a member of the “Deaconess Deacons,” he could be found in the cafeteria at Deaconess Hospital early every morning. He and his fellow deacons would say they were just meeting for coffee, but if you asked around you would find that this group was friend and counselor to staff, patient and visitors as well.
Alden was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul (Bud) Lose and Bill Lose; and sister Grace (Ullarich) Cadwell. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Lose; son, Tom Lose; daughter-in-law, Sharon Lose; daughter, Marilee Nichols, son–in-law, Daniel Nichols; grandchildren, Nathan Lose and Danielle Nichols, all of Billings. Alden is also survived by four sisters, Lorna Frandsen and Helen (Leo) Eckhardt, both of Billings, Claris (Herman) Ungefug of Belfry, and Greta Leonard of Boulder City, Nev.; brother-in-law, Orville Thom of Red Lodge; cousin, Charles (Chuck) Crockett of California; and many nieces and nephew.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at the Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Interment will follow at the Bridger Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Smith’s Downtown Chapel, 120 N. 26th St. in Billings. Visitation will be at Smith Olcott Chapel 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

TRAVIS HAYES SCHWEND
JOLIET - Travis left his family and friends early on the morning of July 3, 2004. He enjoyed life to its fullest, always having a big smile on his face.
Travis touched the hearts of everyone with whom he came in contact, young and old alike. He loved his brother and sister and was very proud of them. He enjoyed teasing his sister constantly. He could hardly wait until he was old enough and big enough to beat his brother.
When Travis smiled, he brought sunshine to all. We shared him with many people in this life. He will be greatly missed.
Travis recently graduated from Joliet High School and was looking forward to playing football and attending Montana Tech in Butte this fall. He was involved in every extra-curricular activity at school that time would allow. He gave 100% all the time, no matter if the score was in his favor or not. Travis put his heart into everything he did and never gave up.
Travis always took time for neighbors, family, and friends. He loved to play card games and table games, especially when he could win against his sister.
He loved his truck and loved to listen to music. We knew he was on his way home because we could hear his music. He really enjoyed working out and lifting weights. Travis was a social butterfly, always talking and ready to visit with anyone.
How much do we love you, Travis? Bunches.
Travis is survived by his mother, Bonnie: his father, Doug: his sister, Kristina: and his brother, Bryan and his wife, Becky; maternal grandparents, Bill and Carol Speigner: paternal grandparents, Chester and Celeste Schwend; numerous aunts and uncles and cousins, and hundreds of friends.
