John Julian Covarrubias
John Julian Covarrubias, 85, of Rosebud died at his home on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
Mr. Covarrubias was born on Jan. 9, 1923, in Tampico, Mexico, to Juan and Eulalia Covarrubias. He moved to the United States when he was a baby and later became a naturalized citizen.
In 1923 he came to the Hysham area with his family where his parents worked on farms. He attended grade school in Hysham and graduated from high school in Rosebud.
On April 5, 1944, he and Vivian Martinek were united in marriage in Miles City. After his marriage he farmed with his parents for a few years until he and his wife moved to the Cartersville area to run their own farm until he retired at the age of 77 years.
After retirement, Mr. Covarrubias stayed active cutting wood for his family and friends.
His big passion was sports, such as local football and basketball and he also enjoyed boxing on television. He enjoyed classical music and made sure that his daughters also enjoyed music and knew how to play piano. In addition, Mr. Covarrubias enjoyed dancing and spending time with his family. He was a very devoted grandfather.
His survivors include his wife, Vivian of the family home; daughters, Anita (Joe) Buckalew, Cheryl (Howard) Ruppel and Teresa (Kirk) Montgomery; brother, Paul Covarrubias; sisters, Mary Ruffatto, Consie (Bob) Kelly, Connie (Bob) Ratzel, Socorro (Jack) Steele and Sister Consuelo; as well as eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Covarrubias was preceded in death by his brothers, Leo and Frank Covarrubias.
Vigil/Rosary will be Friday, March 7, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forsyth.
Funeral services for Mr. Covarrubias will be Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forsyth. Burial will follow in the Forsyth cemetery.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Mark Allen Forman
Mark Allen Forman, 55, of Knowlton died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at his home as a result of a ranch accident.
He was born in Miles City on April 11, 1952, the son of Ralph and Elaine (Linendoll) Forman. He attended grade school in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1970.
Following graduation, he attended the University of Montana-Missoula. In 1973, he and Lavonne Brown were married
at the family ranch at Knowlton.
Mr. Forman graduated with a degree in psychology in 1974. After graduating from the University of Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Forman returned to the Brown family ranch where they remained until the time of his death.
He enjoyed fly fishing, writing poetry and being an active part of the Knowlton Community. More than anything, he loved working on the ranch where he would walk out the door every morning and look at the sky and thank the Lord for the opportunity to work another day in this beautiful place.
Mr. Forman was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Farm Bureau, Ismay Community Church and Alcoholics Anonymous, achieving 19 years of unbroken sobriety. He also enjoyed bookkeeping, and worked for 30 years as the clerk of rural school district 38, which included Knowlton, Cottonwood and Locate schools. He also did books for Trail Creek and Riverview schools, the Knowlton cemetery, the Ismay Church, and the Custer County Farm Bureau. He was active in the community, taking care of the Knowlton School and cemetery and helping any neighbor who needed a hand.
His survivors include his wife, Lavonne Forman of Knowlton; two sons: Levi Forman of Livermore, Calif., and Luke (Belinda) Forman of Billings; a daughter, Lona Forman of Billings; his father, Ralph Forman of Miles City; his mother-in-law, Ruth Brown of Miles City; two brothers, Jim (Marilyn) Forman and Jerry (Elaine) Forman, all of Miles City; an uncle, Rev. Kim (Mary) Forman of Seattle, Wash.; special friends, Brian and Jill Hildebrand; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine; his father-in-law, Cecil Brown; and a nephew, Tucker Ray Logan.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 6, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Grace Bible Church in Miles City. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Knowlton cemetery at Knowlton.
Should friends desire, a memorial fund have been established at First Interstate Bank in Miles City.
Wilma Eldering
In the early morning hours of Monday, March 3, 2008, Wilma Eldering, 100, of Hysham died.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who lived an amazing life, which began in the horse and buggy days and ended in the age of Internet and cutting edge technology.
She was the last born child of Edward and Judith Hay Kimball, born May 20, 1907, in Centralia, Kan. In 1912 the family moved from Centralia to the productive farm land in the Yellowstone River Valley at Hysham. She attended school in Hysham and graduated in 1925.
Education was very important to her family and many sacrifices were made to enable a college education. She attended college in Dillon and graduated with a teaching degree.
She taught school in Sanders, Custer and Hysham and later became the Treasure County Superintendent of Schools.
On March 22, 1933, she and Herman Eldering were married
. She loved to tell stories of how she and her husband danced across eastern Montana.
They farmed and ranched in the Pease Bottom area on the Eldering ranch. They were blessed with two daughters, Shirley Redland and Marion Nahulu. Her daughter Shirley continues to operate the family ranch with her children.
Mrs. Eldering’s life is difficult to describe in a few short paragraphs. She lived an amazing 100 years. She greeted each day with excitement and energy. She and her husband worked together on the family ranch and when the couple’s daughter, Shirley, and her husband, Ole, came to manage the ranch, Mr. and Mrs. Eldering traveled regularly to see their daughter, Marion, in Hawaii.
Mrs. Eldering was involved in most all functions in the Hysham/Rancher community. When she was younger, she and her brothers had their own band, which traveled to area dances. She was a gifted piano player mainly playing by ear.
Friendly Garden Club, Women’s Club, Canasta Birthday Club, Treasurebelles and Hysham Community Senior Citizens were blessed with her attendance. She was a regular Sunday School teacher at the Rancher Presbyterian Church and later the Hysham Community Presbyterian Church.
She will be most be remembered for her love of family and absolutely remarkable tea parties. She collected tea cups and no one was allowed to leave her home without a tea party.
She could bring any story to life with just the little sparkle in her eye. Even as age crept up on her, her youthful energy persisted.
Her survivors include her daughter, Shirley Redland of Hysham; her grandchildren, Bob (Kathy) Redland, Ruth (Al) Baue, Elaine (Gordon) Arneson, all of Hysham and Rene (Steve) Kirsch of Kamuela, Hawaii; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Herman Eldering; her brothers, Burl, Carroll, Glen, and Ray Kimball; her sisters, Nola Kimball Wright and Gladys Kimball Sweetser; her daughter, Marion Eldering Nahulu; her son-in-law, Ole Redland; her granddaughter in-law, Monica Redland; as well as her life long friend, Rebecca Grierson Almond.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hysham. Burial will follow at the Rancher cemetery in Myers.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Claire "Honey" Roberts
Claire “Honey” Roberts, 77, of Broadus died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1931, in Miles City, the daughter of Harry Thomas and Gertrude M. Dolan Mitchell. She attended Mitchell School in Sonnette and later in Anaconda. Mrs. Roberts graduated as Salutatorian at Powder River High School in Broadus.
She was working for Holt’s Drug Store when she met and married
Leonard Roberts on Nov. 30, 1950, in Miles City. Following their marriage, they ranched in the Boyes community.
In 1974 they moved to Locate where they ranched until 1978 when they moved to Kinsey. In 1980, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts moved to Miles City where they lived until retiring in 1987. The retirement life took them to Minnetonka, Minn., which she called home before moving to Broadus in 2005 where she had resided since.
Mr. and Mrs. Roberts enjoyed traveling and were proud to say they made it to every state except Alaska and they made it to all their family reunions. There were a lot of memories and a lot of laughter from the “Mitchell” sisters out on the road. She was always an active woman who enjoyed being outside, working in her garden and being around animals.
Mrs. Roberts liked bowling and reading. Her family, especially her grandchildren, were the most important thing to her. She loved taking care of everyone.
Her survivors include her sons: Ron (Ann) Roberts of Scobey and Mitch (Kathy) Roberts of Broadus; her daughters: Bonnie (Curtice) Randall of Broadus and Candy Roberts of Chaska, Minn.; her son-in-law: Wayne Sinkie of Minnetonka; three sisters: Dot Nalley of Broadus, Bo Denson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Streamie Mellville of Butte.
Survivors also include her prides and joy, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard Roberts in 1996; her daughter, Sandy Sinkie; and her sister, Eva Deitchler.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Powder River Manor. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus. Interment will follow in the Valley View cemetery in Broadus.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Broadus has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Powder River Manor for room renovation or to the Powder River Museum.
Jean Devine
Jean Devine, 99, of Miles City died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Mrs. Devine was born in Miles City on Dec. 21, 1908, the daughter of Miles W. and Jennie Johnson Milligan. She attended schools in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1927.
She and Lyle Devine were married
on July 16, 1942, in Glendive. As well as being a homemaker, she was bookkeeper for the Milligan Hotel, the Miles City Livestock Auction, and Devine and Son Livestock.
Mrs. Devine was a woman who sincerely valued her time with family and friends. She loved social settings and actively participated in several organizations. Mrs. Devine was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Stewardship Circle, a Charter Member of the Sage Riders, and a member of the Range Riders Reps. She enjoyed the family ranch on Moon Creek and was passionate about horseback riding.
Her survivors include a son, Jim (Betty) Devine of Huntley; a daughter, Marjorie (Bob) Taylor Billings; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 15 great great-grandchildren; a nephew, Miles (Beth Ann) Milligan of Miles City; a niece, Mardell Getting of Missoula; and a niece, Marjorie Young of Denver, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Roy and Howard Milligan; sister-in-law, Clara Milligan; her husband, Lyle Devine; and her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Matt Eckert.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.

James Edward "Jimmy" Van Ham
James Edward “Jimmy” Van Ham, 30, of Miles City died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008.
He was born on Aug. 19, 1977, and he lived every day to its fullest. His childhood was filled with working, hunting, and fishing with his brother and father. His high school years were filled with Custer County High School Track and Future Farmers of America activities.
After graduating in 1996, he went on to Wahpeton, N.D., where he completed two years in the Diesel Mechanics Program. He spent the next 10 years working as a technician on a seismographic ship that explored the oceans for oil. He also worked many feed lots and for the Miles City Livestock Sales Barn, and bartended at the Bison Bar.
His close friends, of whom there are too many to count, knew him as Jimmy. He was someone you could always count on to lend a helping hand when needed and expected nothing in return. He loved horses, working on several of the local and surrounding area ranches, and most of all his close friends and family.
His survivors include his mother, Mary Van Ham; his sisters, Lynn (Joe) Rogers of Bozeman, Martie (Gary) Lawson of Miles City, Ida Van Ham (Cliff) of Miles City, Shirley Van Ham (Michael) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Joe Van Ham of Fort Bragg, N.C.; and Missy Van Ham of Sioux Falls, S.D. He had many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his second family, Randy, Cindy, Buck, and Casey Olson of South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Frederick Van Ham.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral Services will be Monday, March 3, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.

Ethelyn Marie Nile
Ethelyn Marie Nile of Miles City, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008.
She was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Forsyth to Theodore and Carol Nile. She attended grade school at the Howard schoolhouse west of Forsyth until she started Forsyth High School in 1949.
On Nov. 28, 1954, she and Charles L. Church were married
in Forsyth. They lived in Big Horn until 1956 when they moved to Forsyth to work their own farm. In 1958 they moved to Sanders and farmed until 1968.
Melstone was to become her home until moving to Miles City in September 2007.
Survivors include her brother, Larry (Fran) Nile of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; her four children: Terrylynn Adams of Mount Prospect, Ill., Karen (Charles) Adams of Billings, Leslie (Shannon) Church of Miles City and Stacey (Brent) Baumann of Belgrade; her grandchildren: Melissa (James) Saunders, Sidney (Cindy) Adams, James (Amy) Adams, Addie Mae and Beth Adams, John Adams, Stuart (Tricia) Adams, Joshua, Kristen and Hunter Church and Rebecca, Brittnay and Niki Baumann; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband.
Funeral Services, under the direction of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in the Faith Lutheran Church of Melstone. Burial will be in the Melstone cemetery, with a luncheon at the Melstone Community Center after the services. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the American Lung Association.
Dolphine A. (Heigh) Wellenstein
Dolphine A. (Heigh) Wellenstein, age 84, of Helena passed away Wednesday afternoon February 27, 2008 following a stroke she had suffered a week earlier. At the time of her death she was surrounded and comforted by her family.
Dolphine was born May 22, 1923 in Tacoma, Washington to James Hunter and Hilda (Eaton) Hamilton. She attended and graduated from Ismay High School in Eastern Montana. Dolphine then attended a Business College in Billings, studying Business Administration.
On June 6, 1945, Dolphine married
Hunter Keith Heigh in Astoria, Oregon. This marriage brought five children, Larry, Billi, Danny, Tomi and Marci. Hunter died July 3, 1977. She later married
Gene Wellenstein in July 1986, he to preceded her in death on December 11, 1992.
In Dolphine’s working career included a clerical position with Mountain Bell, she managed a convenient store, worked retail and worked for the State of Montana Liquor Division where she retired. She continued working, assisting in two family businesses at the J Bar E Sod Farm and R. Tech College of Cosmetology up until her stroke.
In her high school years, Dolphine lettered in basketball four years. She always enjoyed the sport. She also enjoyed watching golf, working, gardening, embroidering work, crocheting and spending time with grandkids and family. When living in Miles City, she volunteered years of service to area churches.
In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jimmy Hamilton. She is survived by her children, Danny (Patricia) Heigh of Spokane, WA, Larry (Denise) Heigh of Helena, Tomi (Bruce) Rautio of Helena, Billi Heigh and Marci Heigh both of Helena; grandchildren, Chuck Heigh, Tammy Swanby, Nicole Heigh, Crystal Heigh, Wade Rautio, BreAnn Hill and Amber Carlson and two great grandchildren, Alex Heigh and Riley Stevens

Harriet Irene Haworth
Harriet Irene Haworth, 83, of Miles City died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
She was born in White Butte, S.D., on June 22, 1924, the daughter of Jay and Pernella Weeding Riddle. She was raised on the family farm west of Lemmon and attended country school in a one-room school house and graduated from high school in Lemmon, S.D.
She and Virgil Haworth were married
in Monterey Park, Calif., on Feb. 6, 1943. They remained in California while Mr. Haworth was in the service and later worked for Carnation Creamery in California. They later moved to Miles City where they raised their family. For numerous years, she worked as a physical therapy aide at the Veterans Affairs Hospital.
Mr. Haworth died in 1989 and she had continued to live in Miles City.
Mrs. Haworth loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening.
Her survivors include her son, Vince Haworth of Miles City; three daughters, Virjay Glover of Billings, Vi Russell of Billings, and Valinda Hartmann of Butte; a sister, Darlene Riddle of Lemmon; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Riddle and Jane Dale and her husband Pierre Mangen of Miles City; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil Haworth; three brothers, Robert, Duane and Jim; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Glover; and a grandson, Traton Pierce.
At Mrs. Haworth’s request, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be Friday, Feb, 29, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.
