PHYLLIS DARLENE TODD SUNDBERG
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend joined company with the Lord and many of her loved ones on the morning of March 26, 2004, leaving us but not our hearts. Phyllis Darlene Todd Sundberg went home to be with God after a courageous fight of complications in her lungs involved with Rheumatoid Arthritis. She lived a fulfilling life of 76 years.
Phyllis was born on June 24, 1927 in Bozeman, Montana, the daughter of Thomas Bayard and Erma Louisa King Todd. She was raised and attended schools at the Gallatin Gateway Elementary School, Gallatin County High, Montana State College/University and the University of Washington. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.
On December 22, 1950, Phyllis married Vernon Percy Sundberg in Bozeman. They made their home in Hamilton, Montana, where Vernon worked for the United States Soil Conservation Service and were blessed with their first two daughters, Vona and Debra. They moved to Columbus, Montana, in 1955 and three more children, Dorcas, Lance, and Randy, were brought into this world. In 1967, the family moved to Bridger, Montana, where they have made their home for 37 years.
Possessing a ceaseless work ethic and boundless creativity, her entire family and friends are proud of the contributions she made to the lives of everyone around her. She worked as a registered dietitian at the University of Washington in Seattle and at the University of Montana in Missoula, then later at the Stillwater Hospital and Nursing Homes in Columbus and Red Lodge from 1950 until 1977. She then worked as the librarian at the Bridger Public Library from 1973 to 1992. She served a four year term on the Montana State Library Advisory Council.
Phyllis loved to learn especially history and genealogy. She served as a volunteer generously offering countless hours for many groups and projects, helping others and preserving history. She was a member of the Billings Association of the Family and Consumer Sciences for over 50 years; Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority; 4-H; Girl Scouts of America; Gallatin County, Carbon County, Big Horn County, Stillwater County Historical Societies; Yellowstone Audubon; Yellowstone Corral of Westerners; Yellowstone Genealogy Forum; Sons & Daughters of Pioneers of Gallatin County; Mount Hyalite Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Rimrock Harness Club; Bridger Golden Age Society and St. James Lutheran Church. She loved to read, study history, tole paint and design quilts, leaving behind many cherished pieces. She enjoyed nurturing a beautiful large garden of flowers and vegetables for canning, preserving and sharing with others. We give thanks for the love and knowledge she shared with us that formed our lives in so many wonderful ways.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon; daughters Vona Phyllis Sundberg of Kalispell, Montana; Debra (Debbie) Lynn Sundberg of Billings, Montana; and Dorcas (Cassie) Darlene Sundberg Murphy and Blaine of Sheridan, Wyoming and sons Lance Vernon Sundberg and Patty of Columbus, Montana and Randy Dean Sundberg and Cindy of Baltic, Conn. He attended school at the Upper Big Horn School near Custer, Mont. In the fifth grade he began attending the Custer Elementary and graduated from Custer High School in 1939.
Following graduation he worked for several area ranches until he was called to serve his country on Sept. 8, 1942. He was later attached to Company B 899th Tank Destroy as a supply clerk, and served in the Rhineland near Nuremberg, Germany. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Overseas Service Bar, The American Theater Service Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged on Jan. 13, 1946.
During his service time, he returned home on furlough and married his friend, Mildred Quest, of Custer on Jan. 23, 1943. The couple had two children, Paulette Ann and Monte Lee. The couple was later divorced. After his discharge from the military, he farmed the Brown place, later worked at Forsyth for John Becker, came back to the Hysham area and worked at the Grierson Ranch, and later worked for the Keller Ranch in Custer.
For a time, Fred worked for trucking and construction companies and bought and sold cattle with his cousin, Jack Guptill, in the northern part of Idaho and northwestern Montana.
Fred moved to Fromberg in 1958, and there met Majorie Elaine “Midge” Lee, and the two were married at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Billings on April 17, 1964. His rendition of the “Wabash Cannon Ball” and other country-western songs were a favorite with all who heard him sing. He began playing and singing at an early age at home with his brother, Wallace, and the neighbor boys, Mervil and Doug Jackson, when the Guptills lived on the Big Horn River near Custer.
