Leonard "Albert" Hellickson
Leonard “Albert” Hellickson, 66, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007.
He was born Jan. 12, 1941, in Scobey where he farmed and ranched for many years before moving to Arizona in 1988. He retired as a supervisor in housing maintenance for the Gila River Indian Tribe in the Phoenix area.
His survivors include his wife, Patsy; daughters, Sherry Stoltz and her mother, Cristal Hellickson both of Miles City, Brenda (Ruben) Hood of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dacia Lucas of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Kenny (Virginia) of Casa Grande, Ariz., LeRoy (Dixie) of Scobey and Charles of Terry; and six grandchildren, Ryan, Gage, Shelby, Sydney, Alex and Logan.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, at 7 p.m., with viewing one hour prior to service, at Tempe Mortuary, 405 E Southern Ave., Tempe, Ariz. An additional funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veterans cemetery with full military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1579.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, Brighton Gardens Facility, 6001 East Thomas Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85251.

Keith Walker
Former resident Keith Walker, age 46, husband of Kathy Sandefer Walker, died from a heart attack in Orlando, Fla., last week.
Services are pending in Florida.

Jerome "Jerry" Hansen
Jerome “Jerry” Hansen, 43, of Miles City died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, in Billings after complications from his battle with leukemia.
Mr. Hansen was born to Ejner and Carla Andrus Hansen on April 13, 1964, in Dillon. He attended Lima Public Schools and graduated from Montana State University with a degree in agricultural business. He married his best friend, Sheila Carpenter on Nov. 17, 1990, and they moved to Miles City where they ranched and ran a feed lot.
He enjoyed spending time with his little “cowhands” Avery and Hayes, working with his father, refereeing basketball, golfing and spending time with friends.
His survivors include his loving wife, Sheila, and his daughters, Avery and Hayes, all of Miles City; his parents, Ejner and Carla (Andrus) Hansen of Miles City; his brother, Keith Hansen and his daughter Annie of Phillipsburg; Russ (Nicole) Hansen of Butte; and Steve (Stacy) Hansen and their son Lewis of Rupert, Idaho; his mother and father-in-law, Dale and Roseann Carpenter of Melrose; his brothers-in-law, Dale (Twyla) Carpenter and daughters Sara and Emily of Butte, Travis Carpenter of Butte, and David Carpenter of Melrose; his sister-in-law, Sylvia Carpenter and her children Sara, Cassie and George of Butte; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
Mr. Hansen was deeply committed to God, his family and friends. He was a special man who brought joy to all who knew him.
A Vigil Service will be Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, at 6 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Church or to the Sacred Heart School.

Myron W. Bahr
Myron W. Bahr, 88, of Miles City died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City.
Mr. Bahr was born on March 30, 1919, in Thompson, N.D., the son of Edwin and Myrtle Schroeder Bahr. He attended rural schools in Grand Forks County through the eighth grade.
Following his schooling, he went to work on his father’s farm where he worked for 37 years. Mr. Bahr married Dorothy Johnson in 1946.
He semi-retired in 1983 and worked as a fertilizer salesman and insurance salesman. They moved to Montana in 1990 for a couple of years and ended up liking it and stayed for 17 years.
Mr. Bahr did a lot of woodworking after moving to Miles City and made cedar chests for every grandchild. He worked at Retired and Seniors Volunteer Program, the church, Gideon’s, and the Drop-In Center. A good day for Mr. Bahr was working in the woodshop in the morning and playing cards in the afternoon at the Drop-In-Center.
He served as a 4-H leader, tax assessor, township supervisor, and was very active in their home church. He enjoyed working with agates and especially following his grandchildren in their activities.
His survivors include his wife, Dorothy Bahr of Miles City; two sons, Gary Bahr and his wife Joan of Thompson, N.D., and David Bahr and his partner Art of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters, Judith Mitchell and her husband Bob of Littleton, Colo., and Mona Bilden and her husband Mark of Miles City; two sisters, Arlene Krueger and her husband Leon of East Grand Forks, N.D., and Loretta Stein and her husband Jim of Evanston, IL; 10 grandchildren, Chris, Heidi, Andrea, Amy, Alissa, Jeremy, Carmen, Matthew, David and Larry; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vivian; and a grandson, Ryan.
A Prayer Service will be Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Miles City. Following the funeral service, there will be a luncheon at the church. Interment will be held at a later date in North Dakota.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church; Holmes United Methodist Church in Reynolds, N.D.; Holy Rosary Hospice; the Gideons; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Ruth Ann Kuntz Buckalew
Ruth Ann Kuntz Buckalew, 82, of Billings, formerly of Forsyth, died suddenly Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital Emergency, after falling ill at home.
One of 12 children, she was born April 23, 1925, to John and Elizabeth Kuntz on the homestead west of Forsyth.
On March 23, 1941, she and Floyd “Elmer” Buckalew were married in Forsyth. To this union, six children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Buckalew spent the first years of their marriage in Forsyth where five of their six children were born. Mr. Buckalew worked in the bakery and on the railroad and Mrs. Buckalew was a homemaker and mother.
In 1954 they moved to Glendive where he worked again as a baker and she worked at several jobs to supplement the family income. In 1957 the couple took over the management of the bakery and restaurant in Glendive. When their contract ended in 1959 they chose not to renew but decided to move to Roundup to operate another bakery. This business endeavor however turned out not to be profitable so in 1960 they moved to Billings where they both found employment.
Mr. and Mrs. Buckalew looked forward to summer as one of their favorite pastimes was fishing and picnicking. She also looked forward to holidays where all the children and grandchildren would come and she would have big family meals. Mrs. Buckalew was a great cook so she never had to worry about there being an empty chair at the table or having to look for place to put the leftovers as there weren’t very many.
Mr. Buckalew died of a heart attack in 1973 and Mrs. Buckalew struggled for the next few years trying to make ends meet as she still had a teenage son, Mike, living at home.
In 1981 she met John Peters and began the next phase of her life. They lived in Miles City and spent a lot of time gardening, crocheting, (she), market watching, (he) and playing cards. They then started traveling and went to a great many of the states including Alaska, Texas, California, Washington, Indiana, Kansas, and Nevada and many places in between.
Mr. Peters died in 1997 and she stayed on in Miles City for awhile but ultimately decided to move back to Billings to be closer to her family. She spent the past few years traveling, working on ceramics and entering pieces in shows with her daughter-in-law Alice and playing at the casinos and just enjoying life in general.
Her survivors include her children, Ruth Wickstrom, Puyallup, Wash., Betty (Gary) Hudson, Roundup, George (Lori) Buckalew, Colstrip, Mike (Alice) Buckalew, Billings and Paulette Buckalew (daughter-in-law), Newburgh, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Elmer and John; her children, Floyd Jr. and Sandra, infant daughter; and all of her siblings except two of her sisters, Betty of California and Suzy of Kalispell.
If one wishes, memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Disabled Vets of America.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forsyth. Rite of Committal will follow in the Forsyth cemetery.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of these arrangements.

John Joseph "J.J., Jack" Smith
John Joseph “J.J., Jack” Smith, 86, of Malta, a veteran of World War II in the Canadian Army and retired rancher and cattle buyer, died Sunday, July 29, 2007, of natural causes at the Hi-Line Retirement Center.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Lone Pine, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Charles and Annie Smith. He grew up in southern Saskatchewan during the depression and attended school in Reliance through the eighth grade.
He worked at various ranch jobs in the area, mostly for his brother Charlie. In 1942, he joined the Canadian Army. He served during World War II in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Austria.
After his discharge he married Kathryn I. “Sue” Larson on Aug. 28, 1946, in Swift Current. For awhile he worked for her father, Walt Larson, before immigrating to the United States in 1948.
Mr. Smith worked for various ranches in the Malta area until buying a ranch in the Larb Hills area in southern Phillips County, which he often referred to as the greatest Cattle Country anywhere. After selling the ranch in 1968, he and his wife moved to Malta and he produced rodeos and bought cattle. He was known in the Miles City area.
He was known for his love and respect of animals and his generosity towards everyone, especially children. Mr. Smith helped build the 1st Creek Hall and the First Trafton Park Arena.
His survivors include his children, Patti Sue (Fred) Peterson of Torrington, Wyo., their children Josie and Whit; Todd (Carol) Smith of Malta, their children Katie and John.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue in 1994; his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at the Adams Memorial Chapel in Malta. Cremation has taken place.
Adams Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Duane Bobiney
Richard Duane Bobiney, 65, of Miles City died at his home in Miles City on Sunday, July 22, 2007.
Mr. Bobiney was born on Sept. 26, 1941, in Beach, N.D., to Stanley and Stella Nahajewski Bobiney. He attended grade school in Wibaux County and graduated from high school in Golva, N.D.
He farmed in Carlyle for 14 years before moving to Miles City in 1974.
Mr. Bobiney loved farming and raising sheep. He was an avid listener of baseball games. He especially loved cheering on the Dodgers.
His survivors include his brother, Donald Bobiney of Glendive; three sisters, Betty Goroski of Wahpeton, N.D., Marlene Kutzler of Missoula and Evelyn Jacob of Bismarck, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stella and Stanley.
A Funeral Mass will be Monday, July 30, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Philips Catholic cemetery in St. Philips.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mary Margaret Sweeney Crone
Mary Margaret Sweeney Crone, 91, of Miles City died Friday, July 27, 2007, surrounded by the love of her family.
Mrs. Crone was born on Oct., 20, 1915, in Caledonia, Minn., to James Patrick and Ellen Whaley Sweeney. She and her parents moved to a farm on the Fallon Flat on June 18, 1918, when she was two years of age. She attended school near the farm through the fifth grade. The family decided they would move to Miles City, where her father worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and the children would be able to attend good schools. As Mrs. Crone said, she “received a wonderful education in Miles City, ” as she attended the Ursuline Academy through eighth grade and graduated from Custer County High School in 1933. This was during the depression, but she managed to find a steady job at F.W. Woolworth Co. and later at the Railway Express Agency as a bookkeeper.
She and Glenn Crone were married on July 29, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City.
In October of 1957, the Crones were blessed with four lovely adopted children, ages 3, 4, 5 and 6. Mrs. Crone believed that their education was the most important thing she could give her children, and made it a priority as they attended and graduated from Sacred Heart School.
Mr. and Mrs. Crone started their own business, Glenn’s Standard Station, in 1949 and operated it until they sold it to their son John in 1980. Mr. Crone died on Jan. 8, 1994, from cancer.
Mrs. Crone was a devoted wife and mother and cherished her time spent with her family. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Elks, Eagles and the Miles City Town and County Club.
Her survivors include John Crone and family of Laurel, and Rick Crone of Salem, Ore.; Francine Pettigrew and family of Stafford, Va., and Lenora Schuldt and family of Goddard, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, of 47 years; three brothers Ambrose (1983), George (1989) and Howard (1992); and two sisters-in-law.
Vigil Service will be Monday, July 30, 2007, at 7 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of committal will follow in the Calvary cemetery.

Gerald Ezra Stewart
Gerald Ezra Stewart, age 90, of Miles City died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at his home in Miles City.
Mr. Stewart was born in Bottineau, N.D., on Nov. 17, 1916, the son of William and Mary Trent Stewart. He attended school in Bottineau until he was a sophomore and then went to work on the family farm.
In 1939, he met and married Dolly Selk. The two then moved to Laurel in 1955 where he worked for Northern Tankline until 1963 when they moved to Miles City. Mr. Stewart opened the first A & W in Miles City in 1963.
He enjoyed woodworking, horses and spending time with his family. Mr. Stewart was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce, Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Past President of the Kiwanis Club, Toastmasters, and was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He made a trip to Alaska and back via motorcycle when he was 66 years old with his wife Dolly.
His survivors include seven children: Darlene Dyer of Port Townsend Wash., Sharon Altimus (Glenn) of Billings, Gloria Gehoski (Mark) of Custer, Gerilyn Muggli (Ray) of Miles City, Terry Stewart (Ginny) of Bozeman, Glen Stewart (Leanne) of Miles City and Gwen Johnson (Dick) of Casper, Wyo.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Rice of Las Vegas, Nev.; and his best friend and companion, Bernice Cottom of Miles City.
He was preceded in death by Gloria “Dolly” Stewart in 1992.
Memorial services will be Saturday, July 28, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.

Bill Eugene O'Connor
Bill Eugene O’Connor of Waverly, Ohio, former Miles City resident, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, after a long and courageous battle with a rare melanoma cancer.
Mr. O’Connor was born Dec. 2, 1940, to John and Irma Irene O’Connor. He graduated from Custer County High School and was always proud the football team he played on won State Championship in 1959. His friendships in high school lasted throughout his life.
He joined the United States Army and upon discharge attended college at Montana Tech.
Mr. O’Connor met Kathy in Boulder and asked her to marry him that night. During their 40 years of marriage, they were blessed with two daughters.
He worked various construction projects and finally went to work for Bechtel Corp. as a Safety Engineer. Diagnosed with terminal cancer in the last year and a half, they returned to Waverly, Ohio, for the love and support with which they were showered.
Mr. O’Connor is survived by his wife and best friend, Kathy, of 40 years; daughter and grandson, Kimberly Glover and Austin Glover, of Beaumont, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Ryan Lehr of Cottrellville, Mich, and grandson, Kyle O’Connor of Waverly, Ohio, Bill and Kathy adopted as a child; Mr. O’Connor’s a sister, Wilma Grewell of Gillette, Wyo.; mother-in-law, Ella Froehlich of Anaconda; Mrs. O’Connor’s sister and her husband, Ken and Marlene Miller of Burley, Idaho; and nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and many special friends in Waverly and across the United States.
Memorials and condolences may be sent in Mr. O’Connor’s name to the family home at 427 Gordon Ave., Waverly, OH 45690.
