Mareita Lynch Palmersheim
October 7, 1933 -March 23, 2004
Mareita stood for many things but the focus of her life was on faith, family, and community.
Mareita was the daughter of John F. and Mildred (Bell) Lynch, the first of six children. She had the greatest respect and admiration for her father who brought the family from Shelby to Belgrade in 1940, where he trained pilots during World War II. In 1944, the Lynchs moved to Billings where John established Lynch Flying Service. While attending high school at Billings Central, Mareita worked for the family business and earned her pilot’s license.
A year after graduating from Central (Class of 1951), Mareita married her high school sweetheart - Bob Palmersheim. Bob and Mareita were married in St. Patrick’s in Billings and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary there on November 22, 2002.
In 1955, the Palmersheims lived in England where Bob was serving in the U.S. Army. More than anything, Mareita wanted to be a devoted wife and mother. Upon returning to Billings, Mareita and Bob brought six children into the world. In 1969, they found a large house on a small acreage north of Fromberg where they raised their family. Mareita really loved her numerous nieces and nephews and always made them feel welcome at “the farm.”
Mareita was at home in the Clarks Fork Valley and among the Beartooth Mountains. She especially delighted in the sunrises and sunsets that lit up the land and sky. Mareita loved horses and enjoyed teaching her children to ride. She looked forward to helping her neighbors move cattle and later shared her joy with her grandchildren. Mareita was a precious and loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed canoeing and summer outings with her family in cherished places like Sawtooth, Cooke City, and Yellowstone Park.
After her youngest entered middle school, Mareita bought “The Store” in Fromberg and ran the local grocery for next 26 years. Until her retirement in 2003, she served the community with a personal touch and delivered groceries to anyone in need.
Mareita wanted to be remembered as a “Call to Action” Catholic. She was inspired by Vatican II and became a leader of the Cursillo movement from its inception in Billings. Over the years, she represented the Cursillo on a Diocesan level and participated in many workshops, Ultreyas and study groups. Mareita grew in faith and knowledge and particularly enjoyed advancing through religious studies via the Gonzaga-in-Billings program. Mareita gave hope and encouragement to many throughout the years including those she met through Al-Anon.
In Fromberg, Mareita was a leader at St. Joseph’s and, with great faith and spiritual wisdom, helped to guide the community. She led us in prayer and led us in song and her voice raised our spirits high! Mareita came to know Jesus as her brother, and she did her best to treat everyone she encountered as if they, too, were the sons and daughters of an ever present, ever-loving God. Marietta’s spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her.
Mareita passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief, courageous encounter with cancer.
Mareita is survived by her adoring husband, Bob Palmersheim; her children and grandchildren, John (Erin) Palmersheim and daughter, Maureen, of Darby; Anne Palmersheim and daughter, Katie, of Billings; Julie Palmersheim and children, Elijah, Lucia, and Anica Wickenburg, of Billings; Tom Palmersheim, of Seattle; Rich Palmersheim and daughter Savannah, of Billings; and Elizabeth (Joe) Robillard and children, Stephanie, Trey, Tyler, and Nicole, of Billings. Mareita is also survived by her brothers, Denny Lynch, Tom (Rosalie) Lynch, and Pat (Carole) Lynch, of Billings; sisters Karen Neibauer, of Bozeman, and Loyola Weldon, of Seattle; sisters-in-law Lillian Palmersheim and Dolores (Dan) Donnelly, of Billings, and Mary Francis (Ray) Birgenheier, of Spokane. Her parents preceded her in death.
Mareita lived to her final hour with dignity and grace. Her life was filled with love and laughter and purpose and that is the way she will be remembered.
A celebration of Mareita’s life was held on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at 7 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. A Mass was to be held in her honor at St. Agnes on Sunday, March 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. with Rite of Committal to follow at the Red Lodge Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Beartooth Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
