Agnes Frances Ueland
Agnes Frances Ueland, 84, died Thursday, April 5, 2007, in the McCone County Nursing Home at Circle.
Born Aug. 20, 1922, in Circle, she was raised on a farm just outside of Circle and graduated from Circle High School.
She met, fell in love with and married Frank Ueland, her husband of 39 years. They enjoyed many successful years ranching and farming on their spread 11 miles south of Brockway.
Mrs. Ueland was the consummate rancher’s wife and there was little on the ranch she couldn’t do. She began her shepherding career at five years of age, she put a dent in the racoon population with her trusted “22” and the wildcat mounted at the entrance of the Circle High School gym was done in by Mrs. Ueland.
Occasionally she and her husband would make their way into Brockway where they participated in community games of whist, dancing to local bands and spending time with their friends and family. They couple also had two children, Brenda and Clint.
Mrs. Ueland enjoyed introducing her children to ranch life through the 4-H program, keeping herself and the children busy with their sheep, horses and steers. Mrs. Ueland could often be seen galloping about the ranch on her favorite horse, Flicker, waving her blue polka dot hat, yelling orders to all. She treasured her trips to exotic places such as Branson, Mo., Carver, Canada and the Norsk-Hostafest in Minot, N.D. Her favorite adventure was the “Big Drive of 1989.”
A proud and devoted mother, she never missed a concert that her “little drummer boy” Clint participated in or missed an opportunity to brag about the artistic abilities of her daughter, Brenda. She was always there for her children whenever they needed to be picked up, brushed off and set back on their feet. Mrs. Ueland also devoted herself to the community as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary and The Round CowBelles.
Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Ueland Rose of Billings; and her brothers, Frank and Joe Wittkopp of Circle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and son, Clint.
A prayer and share service will be tonight at 6 in the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Circle. Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the Evangelical Church in Circle. Interment will be in the Riverview cemetery in Circle.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial in memory of Mrs. Ueland will be established for the Circle High School music and art programs.

Charla Gay Johnston
Charla Gay Johnston, 50, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at the Billings Clinic Hospital in Billings after a long illness.
She was born in Miles City on Jan. 2, 1957, the daughter of Frank L. and Emma Olson Johnston.
She went to school in Miles City, graduating in the 1976 class of Custer County District High School. While undergoing a basketball physical during her sophomore year it was discovered that she had renal failure. She was donated a kidney by her father, Frank in 1975. This was the only family kidney available as her mom and other six siblings were of another blood type. The use of this kidney failed in five years due to a high fever with a virus. She was on dialysis for many years before undergoing a second transplant in 1989 with a cadaver kidney. This kidney did remarkably well as she had if for 17 years. Back on dialysis, her body continued to deteriorate.
A very giving person, she worked with Girl Scouts as well as nursing homes and home health care. She loved her family and babysitting for family and friends was a special joy. At the time of her death she was a resident of Billings Health and Rehabilitation Care Facility where she was always helping her fellow residents.
Her survivors include her father, Frank Johnston of Miles City; six siblings: Brenda Johnston of Miles City, Wanda Rasmussen and her husband Bud of Grenora, N.D., Carla Ferris of Miles City, Marla Malley of Miles City, Kevin Johnston and his wife Mary of Miles City, and Lowell Johnston of Miles City; numerous nieces and nephews, aunts Hazel Wetherelt and Ruby Olson, both of Broadus, Caroline E. Olson of Tacoma, Wash., and Leona Wright of Montesano, Wash.; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Johnston; her grandparents, Eddie and Emma Olson and Ethel and Lowel Johnston; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 9, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

William "Bill" Fried
William “Bill” Fried, 100, of Baker died Sunday morning, March 11, 2012, at the Friendship Villa Care Center in Miles City.
Mr. Fried was born Dec. 23, 1911, the son of immigrants, George and Wilhelmina Fried. His mother was pregnant with him during their voyage across the ocean from Russia and he was born at a family member’s farm near the North Dakota/South Dakota border during the journey across the United States. Mr. Fried grew up on the family homestead south of Plevna, near Medicine Rocks State Park, with his two brothers and three sisters. He went to the country school located near the family homestead until he graduated from the eighth grade.
On Oct. 23, 1936, he and Matilda Klos of Plevna were united in marriage. To this union were born only two children, Roger and Verla.
That small family has extended today to one granddaughter, three great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, all of whom truly enjoyed spending time with “grandpa.”
The majority of Mr. Fried’s life focused on farming and ranching, although he definitely favored farming over ranching. In April of 2004, he met with a farm accident that forced his “early retirement” at the age of 92. The accident necessitated a long stay at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City and nine months later he was sufficiently recovered to enter assisted living at Friendship Villa Care Center where he resided until the time of his death.
Living such a long time meant lots of happy memories. There were family trips to places like Washington state, where Mr. Fried went deep sea fishing; Hawaii, where he enjoyed the local culture (including the hula girls); and Yellowstone National Park, where he spent quality time with his great-grandchildren. With one hundred birthdays and one hundred Christmases, and not that many less harvest times, there were always plenty of opportunities for Mr. Fried to get together with family members and celebrate.
His interest in politics and the daily stock market kept his brain sharp. As the oldest registered voter in Fallon County, and a dyed-in-the-wool democrat, Mr. Fried enjoyed debating politics with anyone who was willing.
His survivors include his sisters, Ella Hale of Loveland, Colo., and Tillie Wenz of Salem, Ore.; his granddaughter and her husband, Carla and Jerry Brown of Baker; three great-grandchildren and their families, Larry and Crystal Brown, Lilyan, Zoe, and Lincoln of Salem, Ore., Katie and Anthony Hanson and Michael of Baker and Elizabeth Brown, who is currently attending college in Salem, Ore.; as well as many nieces and nephews scattered across the country.
Mr. Fried was preceded in death by his parents, George and Wilhelmina Fried; two brothers, Gottlieb and Emil; one sister, Lillian; and two children, Roger and Verla.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker.
A Funeral Service for Mr. Fried will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012, in the Baker Assembly of God Church in Baker. Interment will follow in the Community Union cemetery at Plevna.
