Shirley Hellyer Hains
On Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, surrounded by family, Shirley M. N. Hellyer Hains died in Billings. She was 75 years of age.
On a farm near the town of Dilo (Sand Springs area) Mrs. Hains was born to the family of Charles Floyd “Babe” and Alta Levita Lemons Hellyer on July 23, 1931. She joined one sister and two brothers. Later two more children would join this family.
In 1936, when Mrs. Hains was five years old, her mother died leaving behind six children all under the age of 12 years. At this point Mrs. Hains began the nomadic period of her life. She began the first grade in Jordan and then in 1941 she went to stay with her grandmother, Hannah R. Springer Hellyer in Billings. She also lived with many other people of whom Mrs. Gilmore in Marsh was a personal and much spoken of favorite.
Mrs. Hains spent a portion of her youth with her father and his second wife, Anita Elrude, and three sons. She traveled with them to Idaho where she worked in the beet and onion fields during the war. Her preferences were the beet fields because they provided more “shade.” Due to her lifestyle, Mrs. Hains attended six different schools in eight years. Later in life she completed her GED and attended college classes.
She was on her own by the time she was 15 years of age and she started waiting tables in Jordan where she worked for Homer Brown, Duke Bowman, Ed Ryan and Glen Cooley. Her younger sister, Alta, and she lived at the Jake Fellman cabins while Alta attended high school.
In 1951, Dayle Hains, who was part of the Line Builders electrical line crew came to the café for supper where she worked. Later they were married on April 23, 1952, in Forsyth. Mr. Hains brought two sons, Dayle Kenneth and Rodney Alberto, with him to this union.
In the early part of the couple’s marriage they lived in Hinsdale, Ashland and Broadus before moving back to Jordan. At this time they added more children to their family: Connie Lee, Lynn Dee, Hal Bruce, Dale Ann and Sherlie Renee, all born in Jordan. Mr. and Mrs. Hains’ partnership complimented each other.
Mrs. Hains loved learning and was extremely talented. She was a loving, caring and giving mother who enjoyed her family, gardening, reading, many kinds of handiwork including, knitting, crocheting, sculpting, oil painting, china painting, doll making, ceramics, quilting, cooking and sewing. She was a devoted helpmate, sister and friend. It seemed there was a constant flow of people stopping by the house to visit and share a cup of coffee and a laugh.
Her survivors include the children of her life: Dayle Kenneth (Leah) Mitchell and his son Raul of Missoula, Rodney Alberto Hains and his children Justin and Niki of Helena, Connie (Joe) Urick and their children Danielle and Seth of Hilger, Lynn (Delbert) Stanton and their children Jodi, Jeana, Hannah and Adam of Brusett, Hal (Roxanne) Hains and their children Helaina, E.J., Kasey and Karley of Miles City, Dale Ann (Tom) Billing and their children Rulon, Brian, Charlee, Taylor and Madison of Jordan, and Sherlie Hains-Hafla and her son Kaden of Rapid City, S.D.
Survivors also include her brothers, Charles of Lander, Wyo., John (Babe) of Big Fork, Roy of Germany and David of Cody, Wyo.; her sisters, Ellen of Pearl, Ms., and Alta (Bob) Baugh of Jordan; her sisters-in-law, Shirley (Robert) Hellyer of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Marilyn (Alan) Strickland of Burke, Va., and Barbara (Roy) Hains of Wisconsin; her step-mother, Anita Kopp of Cody, Wyo.; and 12 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Cody, Rylie, Dillon, Rylee, Ashlea, Eli, Abby, Kinley, Karston, Kelsey and Justin.
Mrs. Hains was preceded in death by her husband, Dayle; her parents; and two brothers, Robert and Floyd “Shorty.”
Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Jordan. Interment will follow in the Pioneer cemetery in Jordan.
If desired, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice or to the “Defiant We Stand” memorial statue commemorating the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and to 911. This Alice Walden sculpture will be placed at the VFW Hall in Jordan.

George "Nick" Krumenacker
George “Nick” Krumenacker entered heaven on January 19, 2007. Although he was not a smoker, he died in Salem, Oregon after l year long illness with lung cancer. He did his best to stay with his family, but died peacefully in their presence.
Nick was born at the family home to Nick and Marian Alice George Krumenacker in Miles City, Montana on September 7, 1941. He had three sisters, Ellen, Dottie Jean, and Laura, who died in infancy.
Nick attended school in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School. He loved playing sports including Babe Ruth baseball, intramural basketball, softball, and was a lifeguard at the local pool. After graduation he entered the Air Force and served over three years at McCord Air Force Base. He was Honorably Discharged with an early-out to attend college.
He graduated with a BS in Sociology and a minor in Special Education from Eastern Montana College. He taught school, worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, and then went to work for IBM in sales and training. That experience led to a career in education and business sales and for the last fifteen years he had owned and operated a small business that he sold when he became ill.
Nick had a beautiful singing voice and a great appreciation for both music and reading. But his favorite pastime was golfing, both for the sport and for the time spent outside. He made only one hole-in-one and then the only witness was a squirrel.
Above all else, Nick was a Christian man. His belief in Jesus was the most important thing in his life. His faith was his constant companion and source of comfort during his illness.
The second love of his life was his family. In 1984 Nick married his wife Janice (Lopez) and together they made a family of six, including Nick’s sons Brandy and Ryan and daughter, Amber, and Janice’s daughter Nicole. The family now also includes Ryan’s wife April, Amber’s husband Phil Montez and their sons Quentin and Aiden and Nicole’s sons Tyler and Connor Smith.
Nick was predeceased by his father, mother, and two sisters. He is survived by his sister, Ellen Moran, his wife, two sons, two daughters, and four grandsons. He leaves many close friendships made through church fellowship, business, family ties, and from childhood. He left this life knowing that he was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at the Church on the Hill in McMinnville, Oregon. His wish was to be cremated and his ashes will be spread at the Oregon coast. A second memorial service and scattering of ashes will be held in May in Miles City, Montana.
Memorials in his name may be made to the Scott Banke See You Later Foundation, the American Lung Association, or the American Cancer Association.
