Hugh R. Neumann
Hugh R. Neumann, 77, of Miles City, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2011. His family was by his side the last couple of weeks of his life. He had a very full life.
Mr. Neumann was born Oct. 30, 1933, at the family home in Ismay, the fourth child of Herbert P. and Blanche A. Neumann. He attended grade school at Lincoln Elementary in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1951. He attended most of his high school class reunions and enjoyed them very much.
He worked at Grant’s Pool Hall while attending high school. After graduating, he operated the Miles City Ice Plant; was a hod carrier; parts man at Allis Chalmers; worked at Lockheed Aircraft in California; laborer on the steam plants at Colstrip; and his last job before retiring was to work at the Custer County cemetery.
Mr. Neumann enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. He was always lending a helping hand to someone. He lived with his mother and took care of her until her death in 1994.
His survivors include his sisters, Ella Gran of Des Moines, Wash., and Edna Mendenhall and Marjorie (Don) Pontius, both of Miles City; his nieces, Joyce Gran of Des Moines, Wash., Rose Ann Mendenhall of Miles City, Kelly (Brock) Campbell and Tracy (Jeff) Lavelle of Billings; his nephews, Glenn Mendenhall and Wade Neumann of Circle, Rob (Amy and Addie) Pontius of Colstrip, Joe Crawford of Anchorage, Alaska, Hal (Susan) Neumann of King Salmon, Alaska, Steve (Melody) Reinhart of Shepherd and Darrell (Rhonda) Reinhart of Miles City; and his sister-in-law, JoAnn Reinhart of Miles City. Many more great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, good friends and classmates also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Harry J. Reinhart; his brothers and sisters, Herbert “Hi” Neumann, Mary (Reinhart) Crawford and Howard and Ray Reinhart; his brothers-in-law, Henry Gran and C.E. “Buck” Mendenhall; his sister-in-law, Jane Neumann; his nephews, Gordon Gran and Troy Pontius; and his great-nephew, Scott Mendenhall.
Memorial funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, in the Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel in Miles City. Inurnment will follow in the Custer County cemetery. A luncheon will be served at the Eagles Club, 24 N. Eighth St. following the graveside service.
Eddie Ord Huckins
Eddie Ord Huckins, 65, of Yachats, Ore., died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Huckins was born Feb. 23, 1946, to Lloyd “Cub” and Marguerite Huckins in Miles City. In 1964 he graduated from high school in Broadus and attended Dawson County Junior College in Glendive.
He and Darline Faye Zimmer were married
on Sept. 11, 1965. Together they moved to Moscow, Idaho, where he received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Idaho.
Mr. Huckins joined the Air Force in 1970 and attended Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He then went to navigation training at Mather AFB in California.
Later, Mr. Huckins switched to a career in communications/computer systems. He built a 25-inch color television and his first home computer.
After a 22-year career in the Air Force, he retired in 1992 and moved to the Portland, Ore., area, eventually settling in Scappoose, Ore., where he worked for the Nature Conservancy.
After eight years in the big city, Mr. and Mrs. Huckins moved to Yachats where he continued working with environmental agencies, making small changes where he could, influencing and enriching the lives of friends and neighbors.
His greatest joy was his family. He was especially proud of his grandson, Miles. Mr. Huckins enjoyed playing and teaching the Native American flute. He gladly shared this music with friends and family, during garden tours and with others in flute circles.
Mr. Huckins is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Darline; his daughter, Nicole Lea (Brian) Daskivich; and grandson, Miles Anthony.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Leland Cook
Leland Cook, 88, of Broadus died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at his home in Broadus.
Mr. Cook was born April 5, 1918, in Miles City to H.R. and Ella Kant Cook.
He and Montana “Tana” Ames were married
on Oct. 3, 1936, at Deadwood, S.D. They spent 52 of their 60 years of marriage ranching in Powder River County.
Though Mr. Cook was a city boy who ran the streets of Broadus (when there were only 11 buildings in the business district), his greatest aspiration as a boy was to ranch. He often lamented “Breathes a man with a soul so dead, that wouldn’t want a little spread that would run 100 head.”
His survivors include his son, Bob (Laraine) Cook of Pocatello, Idaho; his daughter, Linda (Don) Nybakken of Nashua; his sister Ella Mae (Walter) Ferguson of Broadus; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Denver (Tammy) Fraser, Dax (Kim) Fraser, Dane Leland and Kodi; Mohria (Bill) Fawcett; Iyana; Brandon (Tahnee) Gatlin; Landry; and three step-grandchildren: Brian (Tayon) Nybakken, Jordon, Tahrynn; Greg (Kelli) Nybakken, Katelin, Hayley, Brianna; and Jana Nybakken.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Tana; one brother, Milo; and a sister, Margie.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at 10 a.m. at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus. Interment will follow in the the Valley View cemetery at Broadus.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Broadus is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Salgren
Word has been received of the death of Robert “Bob” Sallgren, 72, on July 22, 2006. He was a former resident of Miles City and is the brother of C. Ray Sallgren of Miles City. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Condolences may be sent to his wife, Barbara, at 63 Mitchell Dr., Superior, AZ. 85273.
Ivan Benik Sr.
Our Beloved Polish Prince, Ivan E. Benik Sr. passed away on June 6, 2006 at home in El Dorado, KS. with his wife and children by his side.
Ivan was a son of Montana, born in Miles City January 9, 1925 to John M. Benik and Beluah M. Hobbs. He graduated from Miles City High School and went on to work for the railroad a short time before joining the Army and becoming a member of the 36th Texas Division 143rd Infantry as a light machine gunner serving in the European-African-Middle East Theater and was awarded a Bronze star, 2 Silver Stars, 3 Bronze Arrowheads, 2 Purple Hearts, The American Campaign Medal, 2 Oak leaf Clusters.
After an Honorable Discharge he moved to Ogden Utah. He was the Commander of the Clearfield VFW for two years and then he met the love of his life Mary Katherine Bettes from Oklahoma. They were married
July 14, 1950 and settled in Roy.
Ivan worked at the Clearfield Navel base before moving onto HAFB and retiring after 32 years of government service. His love for family, travel and horses was legendary and he could be seen most often farming his 2-acre piece of heaven. He will be remembered for his love, kindness and generosity to family and community.
Ivan is survived by his wife of 55 years Mary K Bettes Benik of El Dorado, KS. Daughter, Ms Merry Benik, Greer, Barrentine of El Dorado, KS. Son, Mr. & Mrs. Ivan ( Chris) Benik Layton, UT. Grandsons, David J Greer Galveston, TX. Jarred L. Barrentine El Dorado KS. Great Granddaughter Onyx M. Greer Galveston, TX. Brother Mr. & Mrs. Richard (Dottie) Benik Riverdale, UT.
He was preceded in death by his Father & Mother John & Beluah Benik, Sister Dorthy M. Torvund and Brothers Jack M. & Donald N. Benik.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. August 5, 2006 at Leavitt’s Mortuary in Ogden Utah. In lieu of flowers donations to the local D.A.V. in Ivan’s name would be appreciated
Joan Baker Hagen
Joan Baker Hagen, 70, formerly of Miles City, died Thursday, July 6 2006. She is survived by two daughters; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol; and a brother, Raymond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Hagen; a son, Bruce Baker; her brothers, Art and Leroy; a sister, Arlene; and her parents, Roy and Alma Steen.
Ervin Manuel Christman
Ervin Manuel Christman, 78, died Thursday July 20, 2006, at Valley Nursing Home with his wife by his side.
Mr. Christman was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Plevna to Albert and Bertha Delker Christman. He attended schools in Plevna and Ismay.
He enlisted into the Army in 1945. Mr. Christman was stationed in Japan, Korea and New Mexico. There he met the love of his life, Marge Little. They were married
in 1951, in Las Cruces, N.M.
Mr. Christman was discharged from the Army in 1957. The family moved back to Montana. He worked for the City of Billings, then moved to Miles City where he worked for the Custer County Road Department. He retired from the road department and then moved to Pompey’s Pillar for three years and later to Billings.
His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Marjorie; a brother, Donald (Sandy) Christman of Laurel; his sisters, Alice Petersohn and Margret (Bill) Radke, all of Miles City; his brothers-in law, Dick Little of Las Cruces and George (Jan) Little of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Joshephne (Bill) Skinner of Las Cruces; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be Thursday, July 27, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in Billings. Cremation has take place.
Memorials are preferred to the Parkinson Foundation and Rocky Mountain Hospice in Billings.
Martin J. Lemelin Jr.
1957-2006
Palmer, MA — Marty passed away at his residence after a courageous fight with cancer on Friday, June 23, 2006.
He was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on January 28, 1957 to his parents Martin and Grace Lemelin. He attended elementary schools in Maine, Massachusetts and Montana and graduated from Custer County High School, Miles City. Further education was Miles Community College receiving an AA Degree in electronics; attended courses at University of New Mexico, advanced math and computer programming.
His employment included several international companies as a field engineer; traveling through the Middle East, Australia and the Philippine Islands.
Passions in life are restoring sport cars, constructing model airplanes, snow skiing, jet skiing with family and friends and his life in Montana.
Marty leaves his partner, Misty Carlson and their son, Christopher L. Lemelin of Miles City; his sister, Sandra Lemelin (Steve Mike) children David and Sabrina of Ft. Collins, Colorado; his brother, Peter Lemelin (Dawna) children, Jordan and Nicole, Miles City; Christopher’s grandmother, Margaret Carlson of Miles City; Marty’s uncle Lyman Felton of Palmer, MA.; his parents Martin and Grace Lemelin Sr.
He will be missed by family and friends throughout the country.
A celebration of his life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Miles City on Saturday, July 29th at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Elks Lodge.
Anton William Gali Jr.
Anton William Gali Jr., 90, of Broadus died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at the Rim Shadows Personal Care Home in Billings.
Mr. Gali was born in Saint Louis, Mo., on Aug. 28, 1915, the son of Anton and Olga Gall Gali Sr. He moved to Montana with his family in 1917 to the Sonnette area where they homesteaded. After eighth grade, he went to work to help support the family, and than started his dirt working business.
On Sept. 13, 1941, he and Esther Ullrich were married
. The two ranched in Rosebud County.
In 1945, they moved to the Epsie Area where they started forming the present day Gali Ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Gali were blessed with six children: Mary, Judy, Janice, Darlene, Geraldine and Dan. In 1956, Mr. Gali was the manager of the Mizpah Telephone Association and was also a member of the Farm Bureau. He was proud of helping people get started in their own businesses.
Mr. Gali enjoyed beekeeping, bowling, coin collecting, the outdoors and hunting. He was a hard worker and enjoyed being around family and friends.
His survivors include his children: Mary (Larry) Hall, Judy (Lennie) MacIsaac, Janice (John) Maddock, Darlene (Jack) Cole, Geraldine (Steve) Gumb and Dan (Sheri) Gali; his brothers and sisters: Olga, George, Frieda, Fred and Carl; 22 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: David, Franklin and Joe; a sister, Anna Swope; two infant sisters; and two infant brothers.
A Vigil Service will be Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at 10 a.m. at St. David’s Catholic Church in Broadus. Rite of Committal will follow in the Valley View cemetery in Broadus.
Should friend desire, memorials may be made to the Yellowstone Boys Ranch or to the charity of one’s choice.
Sister Bernadette Walters
A funeral liturgy for Sister Bernadette Walters, OSI, 99, of Great Falls, a retired teacher, catechist and pastoral minister, was held Monday morning, May 8, 2006, in Great Falls. The Rev. Anthony Gregori officiated. Burial followed at Mount Olivet cemetery.
She died of natural causes on Thursday, May 4, 2006, at the Ursuline Centre in Great Falls.
Born Feb. 23, 1907, in Terry, she was the daughter of Serafino and Bertha Bircher Walters in Terry. She attended the Ursuline Catholic School in Miles City for both elementary and secondary classes. She lived at the Ursuline Convent in Miles City as a child and her mother cooked for the sisters there.
She entered the Ursuline Novitiate in Great Falls and pronounced her vows in Beacon, N.Y., on Jan. 24, 1927, taking Sister Bernadette Walters as her religious name.
She received her bachelor of arts degree from the College of Great Falls and her master of arts degree from the University of San Francisco.
With her teaching credentials in Montana, California and Idaho, she taught elementary education in Great Falls, Miles City, Anaconda, Moscow, Idaho, and San Francisco.
She also served in the Montana Ursuline Indian Missions for St. Labre’s in Ashland, St. Paul’s in Hays and St. Ignatius.
After retiring from teaching, she became Religious Education coordinator for St. John’s Parish in San Francisco where she led Bible study and centering prayer groups. In San Francisco and later in Moscow, she served as lector and Eucharistic minister in the parish.
Her survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Marian Carol Lawrence
Marian Carol Lawrence, 69, longtime Miles City area resident died Monday, July 17, 2006, at her home, following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 26, 1936, in Miles City, a daughter of Mike and Lou Lou Reynolds Melnik. She grew and received her education in Miles City.
On June 19, 1953, she and Wayne Lawrence were married
in Miles City and the couple had made their home in Miles City.
She enjoyed gardening, her flowers and reading.
Her survivors include her husband, Wayne; her daughter, Phyllis (Dean) Derenburger; and her son, Ross (Elizabeth) Lawrence of Miles City; a half-brother, Robert Cook; and her beloved grandchildren, Cory, Marc, Brendan, Hannah and Nathan.
Her parents and a half-brother, Tommy Cook, preceded her in death.
Cremation has taken place in the Bullis-Graves Eastern Montana Crematory. No memorial services are planned. Private disposition of the ashes will be held at a later date.
Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.
