Cauleen Bloxom
Cauleen Bloxom, 92, of Miles City died Friday, July 28 2006, in Miles City. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Church of Christ for many years.
Born in Brazil, Ind., on Oct. 25, 1913, she was the third child of Elmer and Clytie Knoy. She was born with a short left leg and the doctor said she would never walk. She must not have been listening because she walked at 11 months and continued to amaze people with her accomplishments and independence for the rest of her life. Her family moved from Indiana to Wyoming to homestead near Gillette when she was about 12 years of age. Schooling was always a hardship in rural Wyoming. She rode a horse to the bus, tied him and rode the bus to school, only to reverse the process that evening. She was fortunate to find room and board in Gillette for high school in exchange for doing ironing and caring for others.
On July 16, 1934, she and George Bloxom were married in Broadus and he whisked her off to their first home, a tent with a wooden floor. And so began her years of housekeeping, caring for children, and cooking and ironing for her family and many others. Her cinnamon rolls and oatmeal bread were great.
Over the years, Mrs. Bloxom lived in several areas around Gillette, Buffalo and Rock Springs in Wyoming and Butte, Prairie Elk and Miles City in Montana. When her health began to fail she moved from Gillette to Eagles Manor in Miles City and eventually to Friendship Villa, where she resided at the time of her death.
Mrs. Bloxom never drove a car until she was in her 50s. Her family thought she would drive to the grocery store and church, but she had bigger ideas, she drove from state to state, which is how she earned her nickname, “Grandma GO GO.” Over the years, she went from walking with crutches, to losing her eyesight, to needing a wheelchair. Her courage and great sense of humor were noted wherever she went, not to mention her independence.
Her survivors include her daughters, Wanda Crandall of Green River, Wyo., and Linda King and Betty Clauson and her husband Nick, all of Miles City; her siblings include Harry Knoy and Thora Keene of the Detroit Michigan area and a sister, Edith Thompson of Hailey, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Bud and Jerry Knoy; her sisters, Elma Davis and Ruth Board; her husband, George; their young daughter, Shirley; her son-in-law, John Crandall; a grandson, Keith Clauson; and a great-grandson, Jesse Elzey.
A Prayer Service will be Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at 7 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at the Mt. Pisgah cemetery in Gillette, Wyo.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the National Eye Institute, Building 31, Room 6A16, 31 Center Drive MSC 2510, Bethesda, MD 20892-2510.
