Mollie Adams
Mollie Adams, 101, of Miles City died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City.
Mrs. Adams was born July 10, 1911, in a “Soddy” in Harding County, South Dakota. She was the fourth of five children born to Mathus and Theresa Krebor Smolnikar, immigrants from Yugoslavia. She and her sibling had to learn English when they started school and then taught their parents. School was never a very high priority with her father, so when there was work to be done at home, some or all of the children stayed home. In spite of this, all of the Smolnikar children had excellent hand writing and a thirst for knowledge, and became successful in business and life.
Mrs. Adams started working for neighbor families as a hired girl before she was a teenager, however it didn’t take her long to figure out that carrying wash water in and out and washing diapers by hand for board and room wasn’t going to get her very far in life.
So when she got out of grammar school she got a job as a waitress in Buffalo, S.D., 50 miles from home, for board and room and 50 cents a day. She continued to work around northwest South Dakota and southwest North Dakota for several years.
She always said that no matter where her wanderlust took her, she always ended back at the Fowler Hotel in Buffalo. This is where she met W.H. “Bill” Adams, who was working as a teller at the local bank. For Dakotans, Mr. Adams was a brother to Hattie Wilson and Amy Dingle.
Mr. and Mrs. Adams married and rented a house in Belle Fourche, S.D. He was driving mail from Belle Fourche to Buffalo when the local banker lost control on a gravel ridge and Mr. Adams was laid up for a while. They heard about the Miles City and Broadus Stage contract, bid on it and moved to Miles City. They bought a small acreage on east Leighton Boulevard where they milked a few cows, raised chickens, sold eggs, raw milk and cream. During the Second World War, everything was rationed, tires, gas and sugar. Now the Stage was considered vital to the war effort so the Adams went to a preferential allotment because they hauled the mail freight and passengers.
After Mr. Adams died in 1952, Mrs. Adams continued to drive the mail. After 26 years, she gave up the route. She received an award for 1 million, 250 thousand accident-free miles. Mrs. Adams wasn’t ready for the rocking chair, so she worked in the geriatric floor of the old hospital, until she hurt her back lifting patients. She lived in the same house on Leighton Boulevard for 67 years, before moving to the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility for six years.
Mrs. Adams leaves several nephews and nieces and a host of friends behind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and all four of her siblings, Matt Smolnikar, Frank Smolnikar, Mare Ward and Anna Robinson.
Visitation was Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services were be Friday, March 30, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. in Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Bear Butte cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.

Lillie Martha Dolatta
Lillie Martha Dolatta Thomason died peacefully Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Prairie Community Health Center in Terry after a long, exhausting struggle with chronic myelogenous leukemia.
She was born on the morning of June 5, 1928, much to the delight of her parents, R.J. and Elsie Halberslaben Dolatta. Her father announced the birth to the Terry Tribune, which printed his quote “a handsome, winsome daughter was born to him and Mrs. Dolatta.” Mrs. Thomason grew up on the family ranch on Bad Route with three much older brothers. She learned to enjoy her own solitude and the company of many pets. This was her lifelong style. Many of her animals lived well past their natural lifetimes with her attentive care.
The depression and World War II shaped much of her life. She was a passenger on the last horse-drawn schoolbus to school in town. It was a huge adjustment. Weather permitting she rode her bicycle 13 miles each way on gravel roads to and from town. During bad weather she “boarded” until the family purchased a tiny “school house” in town when she was in high school. She maintained that address the rest of her life, except during summers when she had a rural household so her children could enjoy the independence of rural life.
Mrs. Thomason was especially proud of perfect attendance awards at school for several years.
She graduated from high school in Terry and went on to the Presentation School of Nursing at the Holy Rosary Unit Miles City right after high school. The Terry hospital would become her place of work for the next 46-1/2 years of her life, caring for members of her community.
Half of that time was spent in the old two-story building and half in the new facility. She was the surgical nurse for many years and worked some nights. As the facility changed, she worked more and more nights.
In 1950 she married Eldred “Tommy” Thomason. They were blessed with five children.
After retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family and had the opportunity to see some of the world as she spent time and participated in major events in her families’ lives. The first time she got more than a few hundred miles from Terry, she had to get a passport and travel to Okinawa to meet her first granddaughter. Eventually she had put her foot into two different oceans, but she was always glad to be home and part of her community where she enjoyed meals and activities at the senior center and volunteering at the Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery.
Mrs. Thomason had a lifelong enjoyment of music and loved to dance. She played the violin, clarinet and piano and was a member of the Silver Bells Chime group and the Eastern Montana Fiddlers. She became involved in 4-H with her children and influenced many young lives in Prairie County for several decades.
Her survivors include her five children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren: Tom (Jackie) of Indiana, Trulie (Scott Holmes) Abigail Lillian; Rob (Stephanie) Rob, Ethan, Gabriel, Arianna, Alisia, and Audrina; Joel of South Carolina, Rachel, Drew and Elizabeth; Suzanne of Terry, Meris (Tim Greges) Tyler, Sam-Argan Johnson; Dan of Terry, Jessica (Sven Undem) Eivand and Gradie; and Leslie of Terry.
She was preceded in death by her husband: E.C. “Tommy” Thomason; her parents: R.J. and Elsie Dolatta; her brothers: Adrian, Ray H.; Newborn infant: Thomason; granddaughter; daughter –in-law: Laura; and significant friend: Albert Siegle.
Prayer Services will be Friday, March 30, 2012, at 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Chapel in Terry. Funeral Services will be Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Interment will be in the Prairie County cemetery at Terry.
