Harry M. Rose

Harry Moore Rose, 89, of Bozeman died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman.

At his request, there will be no memorial service.

Fred A. Boettcher

Always ready for adventure, Fred launched out for the last adventure on Palm Sunday, April 8, 2001.

Born in Arthur, N.D., Sept. 17, 1912, Fred was tenth in a family of six boys and six girls born to Emma and Emil Boettcher, all deceased.

He grew up on a farm in the Red River Valley near Fargo. As soon as he could walk he began the adventuring and traveling that brought variety to his life.

Fred joined the Navy in 1934, and for the first seven years was aboard ships. He was an outstanding athlete, described by a Navy sportswriter as one of the smoothest players in the Navy, in that area.

Most of his Naval career was aboard planes or ships, ending after 20 years with duty at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Memphis, Tenn. He saw action in

Attu, Alaska.

In 1942 he married Pam Simmons in Washington, D.C.

After retirement Fred served a second career as a soils scientist, after graduating from Montana State University in Bozeman. He and his wife were active volunteers in senior citizens' services in Bozeman.

Surviving Fred are 20 beloved nieces and nephews, and his wife, Pam.

No services are planned. Memorials may be addressed to St. John's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 356, Columbus, MT 59019.

The body has been willed to the Medical College at Montana State University.

Donald "Don" C. Unser

Donald "Don" Charles Unser died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his place of work at Grant Village in Yellowstone National Park. He was born July 25, 1953, in Rockville Centre, N.Y., the son of Raymond and Marge Unser.

He grew up in Hauppauge, N.Y., and graduated from high school there. He earned a degree in fishery science from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Don married Sally Shumpert on May 20, 1983, in Stony Brook, N.Y.

He was a park ranger for Yellowstone National Park. He was a member of the Bridger Ski Foundation. He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, skiing and road cycling. He often tinkered around the house.

Don was very involved in his daughter's numerous activities, from sports to music.

Don is survived by his wife, Sally, and his daughter, Alexa, both of Bozeman; his parents, Ray and Marge Unser, and his sister and brother-in-law, Chris and Ed Dost, all of Smithtown, N.Y.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Linda Unser of Yaphank, N.Y., Bruce and Holly Unser of West Palm Beach, Fla., Paul and Maureen Unser of Smithtown, N.Y.; brother-in-law and wife, Tom and Brenda Shumpert of Auburn, Ala.; mother-in-law, Winnie Shumpert of Tupelo, Miss.

A memorial service was held Thursday, April 12, at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 2118 S. Third Ave. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Bridger Ski Foundation/Nordic Division.

Joshua Marshall Harris

Joshua Marshall Harris died peacefully in his mother's arms on Tuesday, April 10, 2001. Though his time with us was brief, his presence in our lives will be everlasting. We will always remember his gentle hands, his trusting eyes, his loving spirit and the joy he brought to our family in those special moments we had with him. We honor and celebrate our son.

Joshua is survived by his parents Heather and David Harris; sister Hannah; maternal grandmother Kathleen Brink of Atlanta, Ga.; paternal grandmother Barbara Harris of Helena; and numerous other family and friends.

A memorial service was held at the family home on Monday, April 16. All family and friends are welcome to attend. Memorials in Joshua's name may be made to trisomy research at Shodair Hospital, PO Box 5539, Helena MT 59604.

Norma A. Tack

Norma A. Tack, 93, died April 10, 2001, in Bend, Ore. She was born May 18, 1907, in Spruce Hill, Minn., to James F. and Effie E. (Gonser) Maher. She grew up and attended school in Minnesota, graduating from a small school in northern Minnesota.

She married Harry A. Tack on May 18, 1925, in Turtle River, Minn. They lived in Washington during the war years, and moved to Bozeman in 1947. She worked at Beall Park Nursery until 76 years of age. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Norma is survived by her son, Neil D. Tack of Bozeman; daughter, Georgia E. Olive of Lapine, Ore.; daughter, Darlene Gregg of Cedar City, Utah; sister, Gladys Warwood of Belgrade; and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1958.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 12 at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel with interment in the Reese Creek Cemetery.

Hazel B. McKinney

Hazel B. McKinney died April 15, 2001, in Bozeman. She was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Henry, Tenn., to Sam and Virtie (Sneed) Clark. She attended school in Paris, Tenn., and moved to St. Louis during the Depression to work in World War II industries.

In 1946, she married Ervin James Asher in St. Louis, and to this union three children were born. Ervin was deceased in May 1965.

Hazel then married Charles McKinney in Cuba, Mo. in August 1971. They moved to Montana in 1984 to be with her children. Charles was deceased in 1997.

Hazel is survived by her three children, Larry W. (Susan) Asher of Bozeman; Sandra E. Dieter of Bozeman; and Susan K. Ladrow of Redmond, Ore.; three granddaughters, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, W.C. Clark of McKenzie, Tenn.

Hazel was a warm, loving person, a wonderful mother and grandmother. Her family and friends will truly miss her. We are glad she chose Easter Sunday to go home to be with her Lord.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 17, at Evangelical Free Church.

Pearl L. Cawlfield

Pearl L. Cawlfield, 86, of Bozeman, died April 12, 2001. She was born in Beaver County, Okla., Sept. 9, 1914, to J.W. and Mattie (Mitchell) Highfill. Her family later moved to Alfalfa County, Okla., and then to Friona, Texas, where she graduated from high school.

She attended Panhandle A & M College, where she met Dave Cawlfield. They were married March 25, 1934, in Goodwell, Okla. They lived in Texas and Kansas before moving to Billings in 1942, and later to Bozeman. They moved to a small ranch in the Gallatin Valley where she resided until the spring of 1999. She has since resided at Spring Meadows and Mountain View Care Center.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of Valley Center Home Demonstration Club. She was a cook at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for a number of years.

Her family was very important to Pearl, and she was most happy when family members surrounded her. She enjoyed traveling with family, and visiting friends and family. She enjoyed watching out the windows wherever she was, looking at the scenery, birds, weather, livestock and observing what was going on at the farm and in the world around her. Each and every sunrise, sunset, cloud formation, etc., was just the most beautiful thing she had seen. She enjoyed reading the scriptures and had a great devotion to God. She was friend to all and enjoyed helping others. She delivered Meals-On-Wheels for some time.

Pearl is survived by a son, George and his wife, Janet of Helena; son-in-law, Elmer Johnson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; three brothers: Milton Highfill and J.C. Highfill of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Gene Highfill of Dallas, Texas; sister, May Sharp of Sachse, Texas; six grandchildren: Larry (Cindy) Cawlfield of Helena; Lori Harris of Helena; Karen (Glen) Raisland; Deanne (Keith) Fisher of Pocatello, Idaho; Randy Johnson of Sacramento, Calif.; Polly (Tony) Johnson of Reno, Nev.; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband; daughter, Margaret; a great-grandson; one brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, at First Baptist Church in Bozeman. Interment will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.
