ANN DAY

Ann Day passed away Dec. 2, 2000, at Eagle Cliff Manor. She was born the daughter of Jacob and Sophia Madcke May 6, 1918, in Mercer County, N.D. She married Joseph Day in Livingston, Sept. 12, 1946.

She devoted her life to her family and had a unique sense of humor. She enjoyed growing African Violets and making sure the bird feeder was kept full through the winter. She loved all pets and enjoyed giving them treats when no one was watching.

She is survived by daughters, Shirley Solem (Curt) of Billings, Sharon Hathcock (Les) of Helena; and grandson, Kevin Hathcock of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in 1982; infant daughter, Gloria in 1953; nine brothers, and sisters.

Cremation and memorial service has taken place. Memorials may be sent to: Transportation Fund, c/o Atonement Lutheran Church, 407 Wicks Lane, Billings, MT 59105. Arrangements are in care of Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

MARGARET CHIVERS

Margaret (Walters) Chivers of Helena passed away at her home, the Talbert House Wednesday morning, Dec. 6, 2000. She was 97. Margaret was born in Helena Oct. 31, 1903, the daughter of George Washington Walters and Louise Ralston Walters, a Marysville pioneer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two older brothers, George and Samuel Walters, and an older sister, Susannah (Walters) Penwell.

Margaret attended high school in Helena. She went to work for The Collins Land Co. in Helena, which she later owned and operated until its closure in 1973 due to urban renewal. Margaret married Jack Scott Chivers in Helena June 9, 1937. He preceded her in death June 5, 1997.

Margaret was very fond of their summer home at Canyon Ferry, which she always referred to as the “house in the country.”

Margaret was a long-time member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Helena and was active in the Wednesday morning worship group for many years. She was also a supporter of the Bargain Basement at St. Peter’s. Margaret was a charter member of the Soroptimist International of Helena, and instrumental in its founding in April 1944. She held all local and district offices and served as regional treasurer for the Northwestern region, Soroptimist International of America. She was also a member of Miriam Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the Daughters of the Nile. She was an avid reader.

Jack and Margaret enjoyed their travels to Europe and Hawaii, and she attended nearly every District and Regional meeting of Soroptimists from 1944 until the late 1980s.

Since July 1997, Margaret has been lovingly cared for by Robbin Talbert at the Homestead Place in Montana City, and most recently at the Talbert House in Helena, and by her close friend, Helen Fandrich.

She is survived by a great niece, Beth Walters Phillips of Monroe, Wash., as well as her husband’s nieces and nephews, Barbara Paul of Helena, Beverly Bellusci of Missoula, Donald Truman of Atlantic City, N.J., Wallace Truman of Salem, Ore., Stanley Chivers of Williamson, N.Y., Jeanne Bushnell of Lincoln, Jo Ellen Eidum of Helena and Laurel McAtee of Sherwood, Ore.

A cremation has taken place. Margaret’s friends are welcomed to a memorial service at St. Peter’s Parish, 511 N. Park Ave. in Helena, Friday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to St. Peters Parish or to the Margaret W. Chivers Memorial Scholarship Fund established by Soroptimist International of Helena, P.O. Box 1216, Helena, MT 59624. The cremains will be interred at Forestvale cemetery. Hagler-Anderson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

EDNA E. VORHIS

Edna E. Vorhis, 92, of Elliston went to be with the Lord in Heaven Dec. 4, 2000.

Edna was born March 6, 1908, to Walter and Elizabeth White in Quincy, Ill. She attended schools and later worked at the hospital. Her family and brother, Sam White’s family all moved to Elliston in 1925. Edna married Jeddie Vorhis, who was working at the Elliston Lime Plant, Dec. 16, 1928, in Deer Lodge. The couple moved to Missouri and were both employed for the United Real Estate Company. They moved to Arkansas and later settled in Macron, Mo. After 25 years of marriage the couple was blessed with a baby girl, Dorothy Jeanette Vorhis.

Jeddie Vorhis died in 1952. Edna continued with the real estate business before moving to La Platte, Mo. where she opened a restaurant.

She returned to Elliston and opened a restaurant for a few years and later worked for John and Sue Quigley at Frontier Town. She retired at the age of 78 years young.

Edna was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Ethel White; sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Oscar Bellman, and brother-in-law, Dave Evans.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Jerry Horne of Elliston; five grandchildren and their spouses, Debbie and Dan Woodland, Chrissy and Robert Quigley, Vienna Horne, Shawn Horne and Julie Horne; six great grandchildren, Whitney and Chelsy Woodland, Jared and Emily Quigley, Eric and Scott Horne.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1 p.m. in the Elliston Community Church with the Rev. Doug Forbes officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elliston Community Church or donors choice. Jewell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

BARNETT MILLER

Barnett R. “Bob” Miller, age 86, of Helena died peacefully Saturday evening March 31, 2001, at the Cooney Convalescent Home. He was born in Krum, Texas, October 22, 1914, to John Henry and Ava Lenore (Barnett) Miller. Bob attended and graduated high school in Krum, Texas, and later attended business college in Fort Worth.

On August 30. 1938, he was married to Roberta Sanders in Denver, Colorado. Bob and Roberta moved to Montana in August of 1946 and opened his taxidermist shop in Helena. Bob loved the life Montana had to offer, sports, shows, and wildlife organizations and clubs, fishing and hunting. He was a dear and wonderful loving person. A devoted husband, he loved his family and friends. Visiting with his hunting and fishing friends at the shop was a way of life for Bob.

Come join family and friends at a graveside service to be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery. Bob is survived by his wife Roberta of Helena, brother Joe Miller of Fort Worth, Texas, and sister Dorothy Nell McBee of Denton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and four brothers.

Daniel Francis Hanson

Liberty Lake, Wash. - Daniel Francis Hanson passed away unexpectedly at his home with his family Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in Liberty Lake, Wash.

Dan is survived by his wife, Sue Dargan Hanson; daughter, Aryn; and sons, Matthew and Zachary; parents, Dr. Harris and Mrs. Mary Hanson; siblings Jeannye, John, Jule', Bill, Suzanne, Mary Cal, Pete and Kate; mother-in-law Shirley Pippy; and brothers-in law, Rodney, Ramey and Chris Dargan; along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and lifelong friends the Burgesses, Doerings, Harpers and Lannings.

He was born in Indianapolis and grew up in Bismarck, N.D., and Helena. In Helena, Dan began lifelong friendships that will be cherished by all who knew him. Through his ownership of a Helena record store, Dan gained great business knowledge and was able to pursue his love of rock'n'roll music. Many friends and family were able to enjoy his adventures in business.

Dan loved to fix things and took on any opportunity to work with his hands. This love led him to his first career as a master machinist at Asarco in East Helena. Dan went on to receive his degree in manufacturing engineering at Oregon State University and then pursued his most recent career as a printed circuit board specialist at Tyco-Praegitzer in Dallas, Ore., and Redmond, Wash.

Along with careers in the same field in Garland, Texas, at DDI Corp. and Liberty Lake at Agilent Technologies. Dan excelled in his career and leaves behind many valued friends and colleagues.

As an outstanding athlete, Dan excelled in all sports, but his heart was in the mountains and especially on the slopes. Many a ski season was spent with his wife, Sue, at the Great Divide Ski Area as a volunteer Ski Patrol or just 'tearing it up!' Dan's latest sport discovery was golf, which he aggressively enjoyed on the courses in and around Liberty Lake. He shared this love of sports and the outdoors with his children.

Dan was actively involved as a baseball coach, soccer coach and referee, swim meet official and was his kids' greatest fan! When he wasn't on the sidelines, Dan shared his love of learning with his children by volunteering in the computer lab with Zachary, proofreading homework and going above the call of duty for homework help.

Dan's love of life kept him busy whether it was exploring, hiking, cooking, baking, biking or any other opportunity to enjoy activities with his family. Dan made friends everywhere he went and will be greatly missed by all.

Please join Dan and his family at the Cathedral of St. Helena for viewing on Friday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7 p.m. with a reception to follow. Mary Evangeline Munzenrider
March 16, 1916 - Jan. 11, 2002

Mary Evangeline "Eva" Munzenrider, formerly of Helena, passed on peacefully Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Missoula, with her family at her side. She was 85 and had lived with Alzheimer's disease since 1994.

The oldest of three children, born to Mabel and William Crittenden on March 16, 1916, Eva was the first baby delivered at the Choteau hospital. She was raised in Fairfield, Wolf Creek, Helena, Missoula and Kalispell where she graduated from Flathead High School in 1934, and went to work for the Works Project Administration in Helena and later in Butte. There she met Robert J. Munzenrider, whom she married July 6, 1939, at St Helena Cathedral.

Together the couple had eight children over the next 20 years. A gracious, gentle and loving woman, Eva unselfishly devoted her entire life to her family, raising all her children to be educated professionals, willing like she, to help others. She wiped thousands of tears, helped heal all kinds of wounds and baked thousands of cookies for her children, grandchildren and friends. She was a second mom to several of her children's friends, who continued to visit and stay in touch with her until the end.

Mom couldn't stand to think of anyone going hungry or being homeless, and therefore, was a regular, long-time contributor to Helena Food Share. She always fed visitors and provided long-term shelter and support for several troubled teens.

Eva loved visits from her children and grandchildren and delighted in spending time with her sister and special cousins. She was an excellent seamstress and gardener who spent countless hours sewing for her and her children, and growing flowers she loved, especially sweet peas.

Next to her family, music was the most important part of her life: she loved to sing, to play, to listen to recordings and go to concerts. Music sustained her through the most difficult moments of her life, and enhanced those that were joyful She began each day by playing a favorite song on the piano. After the death of her son Stephen, she would play a Brahms waltz for him each morning.

Eva lived in the family home in Helena until February of 2000 when she moved to Edgewood Vista Alzheimer's Care facility in Missoula. She received loving care from the Edgewood staff and enjoyed the company of new friends and two resident cats. She maintained her gentle disposition and wonderful sense of humor until the end, living filled with laughter and smiles.

Eva was preceded in death by her parents and brother Jim, her husband Bob, son Stephen and daughter-in-law Connie. She is survived lovingly by her sister Maxine Morris of Seattle; and children Joe of Helena, Mary and Fredy Martinez of Pullman, WA., Bob and Judy of Minnetonka, Minn, Rosalie and Vince Buzzas of Missoula, Claire of Santa Fe, N.M. Jim and Debbie of San Mateo, Calif., and Rita of Missoula. Eva adored her grandchildren Joe Martinez and his wife Mio, Christopher and his wife Adela, Lisa, Michael and Paul Munzenrider, Aaron and Jocelyn Buzzas, Tasa and Chloe Evangeline Munzenrider; and great-grandson Damon. She was most fond of her nieces Carolyn Crittenden Tegler, Marianne Morris Johnson, Maureen Morris and Janet Lenz; and her nephews Mark Morris, John, Joe and Bob Munzenrider.

Visitation will be from from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 at Retz Funeral Home in Helena. A vigil for Mary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Retz Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Helena, with interment following at Resurrection cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we ask that friends follow the spirit of Eva make a donation in her memory to Helena Food Shares or God's Love Mission, or bring non-perishable items to the Vigil or to the Cathedral, and leave them in collection baskets that will be delivered to Helena Food Share.

Arthur Clark Melton

Arthur Clark Melton, age 76, of Marysville passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002.

Art was born March 21, 1925, to Clark and Caroline (O'Crowner) Melton in Portland, Ore. He attended schools in Oregon, and later graduated from college in Grant Union, Calif., with a degree in business administration. Later, Art joined the Marine Corps and worked with the Seabees.

After his service in the military, Art worked for the Long Beach, Calif., School District and the Alaskan Pipeline as a plumber. He later worked at getting wood for Marysville House and various customers. He was an honorary member of the Lewis and Clark Sheriff's Department. On Sept. 15, 1990, he married Marilyn Bastian in Marysville.

He had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, archery, tying fishing flies, hiking, and country music. Art played the trombone, loved driving in the mountains, gardening, bird watching and football. Art had a great love for animals.

Art is survived by his wife, Marylin Melton, of Marysville; cousins, Lorraine and Jimmy Whitaker, of Oregon; nephews, Brett Alan Bastian, Brandon Alan Bastian, and Austin Bastian; and niece Ruth Bastian; special friend David Sobonya; and his special mother-in-law Mrs. Ruby Bastian. He is also survived by his special pets Sparky, Missylynn, Tommie Cat, Ziggy, Black Jack and Sasha Lynn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his step-father Charles O'Connell.

Viewing will be at Retz Funeral Home Monday, Jan. 28, from 3 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Retz Funeral Home Chapel with interment and military honors to follow at Sunset Memorial Garden cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59601; or to the American Red Cross, Lewis and Clark Chapter, 805 N. Main, Helena, MT 59601.

Truman Alphie Bovee, Jr.

Truman Alphie Bovee, Jr., 83, died at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings.

He is survived by his wife Mary Bovee of Miles City; his children Sharine Bovee of Miles City, Richard (Marilene) Bovee of Elko, Nev., Truman (Judy) Bovee, III of Columbus, William Bovee of East Helena, Mary Rose Bovee of Miles City, and Pam Bovee of Billings; a sister Ruby (Sam) Annalora of Miles City; a brother William (Dorothy) Bovee of East Helena; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Truman was preceded in death by his parents Truman and Rose Bovee, a brother Boyd Bovee, and two sisters Pearl St. Peter and Opal Buchholz.

In respect for Truman's tremendous pride in his country, the family requests that anyone attending the services wear a military uniform or red, white and blue. Visitation will begin Sunday, Jan. 27, in the chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veteran cemetery with full military honors. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.

Laurel ‘Bud’ Mantz

Bud Mantz, formerly of Wilsall, Mont., died in Helena Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002.

Laurel “Bud” Mantz was born to Gustav and Millie (Thom) Mantz on Sept. 7, 1916, in Center, N.D. He married Anne Haag on Nov. 11, 1938. In early 1948, Anne and Bud moved with their two children, Jim and Dolly, to Wilsall where they owned and operated a Texaco Service Station for 33 years. A third child, Sheila, was born after moving to Wilsall. They celebrated 56 years of marriage together before she died in 1994. Bud moved to Eagles Manor in Helena in 2000 to be near his family.

He is survived by his children James Mantz of Terry, Mont., DiAnne Mantz and her husband Frank Pollard of Helena, Sheila (Roger) Marx of Newman Lake, Wash.; his brother, Robert Mantz of Great Falls; his sister, Hilda Ritter of Billings; a special sister-in-law, Irene Pfleger of Center, N.D.; and grandchildren Robyn Fisher, Mark Spooner, Gina Mannin, Lori Degel, Robert Mantz Ludwick, Kelli Mantz Hoffman, Paul Marx, Christa Wandowloski, Erika Wade and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judith Anne Mantz, and his faithful puppy “Missy.”

Funeral services will be held at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Clyde Park at 11 a.m. on Oct. 23, 2002. Burial will be in the family plot at Wilsall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make a contribution send a memorial to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604.

The family encourages any friend of Bud’s to submit a short story or memory to be read at the services.

MANTZ, Laurel G. “Bud, ” 86, of Helena (formerly of Wilsall, Mont.). Mass of the Christian burial will be Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Clyde Park, Mont. Interment services will follow at the Wilsall cemetery. Family prefers memorial to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604.

Bernadine Wright

Bernadine "Deeny" Helen Wright, 82, passed away Oct. 15, 2002, at Big Sky Care Center.

Deeny was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Cut Bank to Charles and Elbea Higgins. She was raised on the family ranch between Browning and Cut Bank. Deeny attended grade school at the Higgins School in Willow Creek. She spent one year in Spokane, Wash., and attended high school. She later returned to Browning to graduate from high school. After graduation, Deeny attended nursing college in Bozeman for one year.

Deeny met her husband, Don Wright, when he came to work at the family ranch. They were married June 8, 1939, in Cut Bank. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before his death in 2000.

Deeny lived in Browning and helped her mother run Higgins Dress Shop until 1957, when Don was transferred to Great Falls. This was just one of the many moves Deeny, Don and their family made over the years. They settled in Helena in 1972.

Deeny was an accomplished artist in all media. Her passion was Native American art. She received many best of show awards throughout her career. She was a great supporter of new artists and concentrated on promoting Native American artists. Deeny opened the Western Heritage Gallery of Indian and Western Art in 1974. The gallery had an extensive collection of sculptures, paintings, beadwork and pottery from throughout the United States.

Deeny and Don traveled often and made the trip of a lifetime to visit their daughter in Indonesia. They also traveled to Hong Kong, China and Singapore.

Deeny is survived by her son, Michael (Linda) Wright of Bozeman, and her daughter Gina (Jeff) Wiest, of Helena; sister, Audrey (Louis) Larson of Browning and brother, Robert (Diane) Higgins of Detroit; grandchildren, Holly and Samantha Wiest, Sherrie (Durand) Lindbo, and Scott Kemp; great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn and Megan Lindbo.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Don Wright and her parents, Charles and Elbea Higgins.

Graveside services will take place for both Deeny and Don at the Montana State Veterans cemetery at Fort Harrison today, Oct. 21, 2002, at 1 p.m. A reception will be held immediately following the graveside service at the home of Gina Wiest (1503 Ohio in Helena). Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604.
