Elizabeth Flaherty
Elizabeth Flaherty entered this life on Oct. 22, 1911, struggling to survive, and left this life on Feb. 5, 2002, fighting to the very end. Mom was born in Helena, the first child of Cornelius and Bertha (Wirth) Coyle.
Grandma and Grandpa brought Mom, one of the smallest babies ever born in Lewis and Clark County, home from the hospital in hopes that she would survive infancy. Without an incubator, they kept her warm using the warming drawer in the kitchen stove.
Mom survived and went on to attend St. Helena?s Grade School and St. Vincent's Academy, where she graduated in 1930. Following graduation, Mom went to work for the Postal Telegraph in the old Placer Hotel in downtown Helena. She was working there during the 1935 earthquakes and used to tell stories about how her boss fled Helena during the height of the earthquakes while she remained to run the office, at one point never leaving for 24 hours. After leaving the Postal Telegraph, Mom took on two jobs.
In the mornings she worked as secretary to the bishop of Helena. In the afternoons, she would walk to Carroll College, where she worked as secretary to the president.
In 1933, Mom met a brash young man named Neil Flaherty from Great Falls.
Although not particularly impressed with him at first, she grew to love him. In October 1936, dad had to go to Seattle to work for three months and asked Mom to go with him and get married
along the way. They were married
on Oct. 3, 1936, in St. Anthony's Church in Missoula. From this marriage came four daughters Betty, Connie, Michele, and Kelly.
After her marriage, Mom became a full-time wife and mother. In addition to caring for her home and raising her family, Mom found time to volunteer for many activities involving her daughters and her church. As a lifetime member of the Cathedral of St. Helena, Mom was very active in the Council of Catholic Women. She helped organize parish bazaars and dinners and was one of the original organizers of the parish's funeral luncheons. In her later years, Mom was active in the St. Ann's Scripture Group and visited St. Peter's Hospital weekly as a Eucharistic minister. Mom was a Camp Fire leader and was active in the St. Helena's School PTA and the Cathedral High School Mothers' Club. She volunteered in the library at St. Helena's School and later at Central School.
Mom was an accomplished seamstress who taught herself to sew. She spent many, many hours creating beautiful outfits for her daughters, including Easter outfits, prom dresses, swimming suits, and ski outfits. She also loved watching sports, especially professional baseball and football on television. While her friends watched sitcoms or game shows, Mom was always flipping through the channels looking for a good professional sports game.
In later years, Mom and Dad traveled to California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, and Massachusetts. Mom was preceded in death by Dad, her parents, and her sister Mary Coyle. Her daughters Betty (John) McColgan of Hingham, Mass., Connie (Jim) Erickson of Helena, Michele (Dave) Burchett of Clancy, and Kelly Flaherty (Scott Settle) of Canyon Creek survive her. She leaves behind seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Bill (Brenda) McColgan of Abington, Mass., Lisa McColgan and Kevin Coombs of Boston, Mass., Tina (Walter) Stone of Hull, Mass., Jeff Burchett and Mike Burchett of Clancy, Josh Erickson of Helena, Maggie Settle of Canyon Creek, Monica and Miranda McColgan of Abington and Chloe Stone of Hull. Her sister and brother, Bertha Leslie of Billings and Ed Coyle of Sandy, Utah, her sister- in-Iaw Margueriette Flaherty of Helena, and numerous nephews and nieces also survive her.
A vigil service will be held Friday evening at the Waterford on Saddle Drive at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Helena's Cathedral Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. Interment will at Resurrection cemetery immediately following Mass. Friends and family are invited to gather at the Waterford at noon for a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Carroll College Impact Drive or Hospice of St. Peter's.
