Wayne L. Dayton

Wayne L. Dayton, 73, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully at his home in Stevensville on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, after a short battle with liver cancer.

He was born in Missoula Oct. 6, 1931, the fifth of five boys born to Carl W. and Pearle (Daniels) Dayton, and lived his entire 73 years on the same property five miles south of Stevensville.

Wayne attended Etna Grade School and graduated from Stevensville High School in 1949, where he excelled in all sports. He lettered in three sports all four years of high school and was the first FFA member from Stevensville to attend the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. He attended one year at Eastern Washington College in Cheney, Wash. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 - 1951.

In 1953, he married his neighbor and childhood friend, Georgiann Strange of Stevensville. To this marriage were born three children; Kathi, Debbie and Steve. He and Georgiann were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple for time and all eternity.

He farmed and had dairy cows for most of his adult life. When health reasons required a different occupation, the majority of the family farm was sold. He earned his real estate license and developed both the Winslett Subdivision and the Jacob T. Dayton Subdivision in Stevensville In partnership with Dan Severson, he built Burnt Fork Manor in 1990. He also spent some time working in Alaska.

Wayne was an avid reader; and took pride in his lawn and garden. He loved helping out in 'Gee's Antique Shop." The couple traveled to many antique shows and sales around the West. He continued to follow Stevensville High School sports his entire life; and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events, often traveling hundreds of miles to attend a ball game.

Wayne was a member of the Stevensville American Legion Post #94, a volunteer fireman for the Etna District, and a member of the Stevensville 1st Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he enjoyed working with children and youth.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Carl, Jr., Neil and Wally Dayton.

Survivors include his wife, Georgiann of Stevensville; two daughters, Kathi (Robb) Peck of Carey, Idaho, Debbie (Tom) LeCheminant of West Jordan, Utah; one son, Steve (Chris) Dayton of Shoshone, Idaho; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; Also surviving is a brother, Morris Dayton, in California and a sister-in-law, Betty Dayton, of Sequim, Wash.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Stevensville Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Stan Jenne conducting on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow with American Legion military honors at Victor cemetery.

Memorials are asked to the LDS Missionary Fund or to the American Legion.

The Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville is in charge of arrangements.

RAYMOND MILLER

WAUNETA, Neb. - Raymond H. Miller, 84, of Wauneta, Neb., former Havre resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at an Imperial, Neb., hospital.

A funeral service with military rites was held on Oct. 13 at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta with the Rev. Michael Laing officiating. Inurnment was scheduled for a later date at Riverside cemetery at Wauneta.

Miller was born on Sept. 3, 1919, at Havre to Hiram and Ida Miller. He was 2 when the family moved to Emmett, Idaho. He attended schools at Emmett.

He was married to Ann Lund on June 12, 1942, in Seattle. He served in the Army from 1940 to October 1945. When he returned from France, he worked as a logger and farmer. He retired from the Hill County Road Department at Havre as a heavy equipment. In 1991, he and his wife moved to Wauneta.

Ray was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Walla Walla, Wash., and the VFW in Havre. He also served as a master in the Masonic Lodge and was a Boy Scout leader in Pilot Rock, Ore.

Ray enjoyed spending time with his family and attending activities involving his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; sons, Daryl (Judy) Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, Gary (Marsha) Miller of Anaconda, and Tom (Sharon) of Wauneta; grandchildren, Chan and Justin Miller of Havre, Samantha Miller of Spokane, Wash., Kimberly Johnson of Olympia Wash., Kirsty Miller of Anaconda, Kacey Miller of Boston, Kerry Hamilton of Wauneta, Travis Miller of Imperial, and Bobby Miller of Omaha, Neb.; eight great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; two cousins; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Goldie Krueger Duffy

Goldie Krueger Duffy, 81, of Victor died at her home on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005.

She was born on Feb. 21, 1923, at Culbertson to Henry and Hulda (Waldow) Krueger.

She married James "Bud" Swindle in 1941; he later died on Oct. 19, 1948. In 1952 until 1967 she was married to Virgil Barenz. She joined Gene Wark in marriage in 1968 until his death on Oct. 30, 1970. James Duffy and Goldie were together since 1971. They later married in 1979. He preceded her in death on July 28, 2001.

Goldie was raised on the farm her parents had homesteaded in Culbertson. She later ranched in Culbertson, and was a business owner in Stevensville. She enjoyed time on the Washington coast and then retired to Victor. Goldie loved to travel, work in her flower garden, reading, embroidery and time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; son-in-law, Bob Williams; stepson Jay Duffy; grandsons, Jarrett Swindle and Todd Carter, and brothers, Frank, Lawrence and Bill Krueger.

Survivors include Rene Williams ofStevensville; Chinook Swindle and Branden Barenz, both of Victor; Nadine "Dena" Barenz of Missoula; Darla Kary and Pat Duffy, Theresa Reardon and Dan Duffy all of Ocean Park, Wash.; Bill "Pickles" Wark of Stevensville, 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, from 4 - 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at 1 p.m. with Pastor John Capen officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mary's cemetery in Stevensville.

Robert Eastman Vallance

Robert Eastman Vallance, 74, of Missoula, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at Community Medical Center of natural causes.

Bob was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Missoula to Maude and Robert Vallance.

Bob worked in the University of Montana kitchen as a food service worker. He was a 20-year retiree. He was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church, Opportunity Resources, was a staunch Grizzly fan, and enjoyed church camp.

Bob was very outgoing and friendly. He had many, many friends, loved to go fishing, camping and take part in other outdoor activities. He was known as a hard worker and was very family oriented.

Survivors include his nephews, George Clark and John Clark; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; two sisters, Florence and Dorothy; and his step-father, Perin.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 2701 S. Russell with the Rev. Ed Washinger officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

The family suggests memorials be made in Bob's name to the family for distribution to developmentally disabled charities.

The Montana Cremation and Memorial Society is assisting the family with the arrangements.

LYLE MONTGOMERY

CHINOOK - Lyle M. Montgomery, 42, died unexpectedly on April 8, 2003, in Reno, Nev.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church in Chinook.

Lyle was born in Havre to Ralph and Vanda (Werk) Montgomery on Dec. 15, 1960. He was raised in Chinook and graduated from Chinook High School in 1980. Lyle graduated from Northern Montana College with a degree in engineering technology, and was a 1995 graduate of a pharmacy school in Laramie, Wyo.

Lyle was a pharmacy manager for Safeway at Hawthorne, Nev., for four years and was pharmacy manager at Kmart in Reno at the time of his death.

Lyle married Donna Price and they later divorced.

Survivors include his parents, Ralph and Vanda Montgomery of Chinook; grandmothers, Calista Werk of Chinook and Esther Montgomery of Kalispell; sister, Calista Montgomery of Billings; brother, Paul (Roberta) Montgomery of Kalispell; one niece; one nephew; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials may be sent to Kitty Keepers, 1117 26th Ave. W., Havre, MT 59501.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook.

HELEN MCKINNIE

COEUR D'ALENE/CHINOOK - Helen M. McKinnie, 97, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Coeur d'Alene health and rehabilitation center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Chapel, 180 W. Clayton Avenue, Coeur d'Alene. Interment will be at Kuper

Memorial cemetery in Chinook.

Helen was born to Pearl and Molly Montgomery in Estevan, Saskatchewan. In 1912, the family returned to the United States and homesteaded in northern Montana.

Helen remained in Montana until 1987, when she moved to Coeur d'Alene to be near her daughter.

In 1929 she married Kenneth G. McKinnie and they resided in Chinook, where they raised their two children. After retiring from teaching second grade, she entered into a second vocation by purchasing Maranatha Christian Supply in Havre. She was instrumental in providing a "home" for KXEI Christian Radio Station above the book store and later sold the building to the station. Her life was a testimony of love and Christian service.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, "Mac", all of her siblings and her son, Kenneth in 2002.

Survivors include her daughter, Marlene (Larry) Martens of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Shirley McKinnie of San Mateo, Calif.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Laura Palm of Chinook; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts may be sent to KXEI, P.O. Box 2426, Havre, MT 59501 or the Chinook Presbyterian Church.

Yates Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Harold D. Johnston

Harold D. Johnston, 83, of Missoula and former Bitterroot Valley resident, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at Village Health Care Center in Missoula.

He was born in Butte on July 28, 1921.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Claire.

Survivors include his second wife, Herlinda Johnston of Missoula, five children, David, Diane, Ralph, Lorie and Alex; a brother Hugh; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Private services were held on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005. The Whitesitt Funeral Home and Cremation of Stevensville was in charge of arrangements.

ERIC HANSEN

CHINOOK - Eric Peter Hansen, 26, died unexpectedly on May 15, 2003, at his residence in Glendale, Ariz. due to complications of diabetes.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Chinook American Lutheran Church with burial following in the Harlem cemetery.

Eric was born in Havre to Kurt and the late Adele (Hedstrom) Hansen on April 4, 1977. He attended elementary school in Harlem, junior high in Chinook, and graduated from Chinook High School in 1995. He attended Montana State University-Northern in Havre and Devry Institute in Phoenix, Ariz.

Eric worked for Staples Home Center in Phoenix. He was very athletic and enjoyed golfing, playing basketball and swimming. Eric and his father were avid Green Bay Packer fans. Eric had a strong love for the Lord and was an active member of the American Lutheran Church. His love and kindness toward all people, friends or strangers, radiated throughout his life. He will be remembered for the warm smile he had for everyone.

Eric is preceded in death by his mother, Adele; and paternal grandfather, Kenneth Hansen.

Survivors include his parents, Kurt and Ginger Hansen of Chinook; sister, Cindy Hansen of Houston, Texas; paternal grandmother, Elsie Hansen of Harlem; maternal grandparents, Al and Evelyn Hedstrom of Harlem; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Chinook American Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home in Chinook.

Louis Henry DuFresne

Louis Henry DuFresne, 85, of Stevensville died at the Bitterroot Valley Living Center in Stevensville on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Whitesitt Funeral Home and Cremation of Stevensville.

GORDON PUCKETT

SUNBURST - Gordon Ross Puckett, 63, a long-time educator and insurance agent from Sunburst, died at his home on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, due to natural causes.

Visitation was Sunday afternoon with a prayer service Sunday evening at the Whitted Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Sunburst Elementary gymnasium with burial following in the Sunburst cemetery.

He was born Jan. 4, 1940, at Scobey to Edwin and Norma (Jacobson) Puckett. Gordon grew up in Peerless, where he graduated from high school 1957.

He married Judy Motschenbacher Sept. 26, 1959, at Peerless.

He attended summer school at Northern Montana College for 13 summers and then received a master's in education degree from the University of Montana. Gordon also worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Service at the Sweet Grass border for several summers. He devoted 32 years to education. He started teaching in the '60s on the Kevin Rim, then at Fairview, Devon, Oilmont and finally at Sunburst Elementary School, where he was principal for 19 years before retiring in 1992. He then started the Puckett Insurance Agency, which he was still operating at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Sunburst Lutheran Church and had served on the church council, served as president of the Coutts-Sweet Grass Lions Club, Jaycees and the Toole County Credit Union. He was instrumental in starting the Sunburst Christmas Fund, which helped buy and distribute gifts to the needy. Gordon volunteered to be the community auctioneer for several events, such as Sunburst Gala Days and benefits for local accident victims.

He had a deep love and interest for his family, friends and people in general. He enjoyed golf, reading and setting up betting pools for his friends. He also loved sports and enjoyed coaching several basketball and softball teams in North Toole County.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Puckett, and brother, Duane Puckett.

Survivors include his mother, Norma Puckett of Plentywood; wife, Judy of Sunburst; daughters, Pam (Gerry) Veis of Havre and Carmen (Kelly) Schafer of Havre; son, Ed (Edna) Puckett of Kennewick, Wash.; sister, Geraldine Girard of Peerless; and grandchildren, Mikyla and Tanner Veis and Pete Puckett.
