HEATHER MOWEN
Heather Michelle "Speedy" Mowen, 25, died Thursday morning, Aug. 21, 2003, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Alfred Ebel officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the graveside services.
Heather was born on Aug. 30, 1977, in Havre to Tom and Betty (McFadden) Mowen. She was raised and educated in Havre and graduated from Havre High School in 1996. While in high school she was active in cross country and track. She attended Montana State University-Northern for a year and a half.
Heather worked for the MSU-N day care and IGA. She was currently employed by West Wind Courier Service of Havre. She also was a newspaper carrier for the Havre Daily News for the last two months.
Heather loved softball and had played since she was a young girl. She was currently a member of the Montana In-Touch co-ed softball team. She enjoyed her son, Brenden, and had a love for all children. Heather enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Some of her hobbies were biking, swimming, hunting and fishing. Heather was an avid Denver Broncos fan. She especially liked John Elway. The Atlanta Braves was her favorite baseball team. Heather was very fond of her grandfather, Dean McFadden. She was a very kind and compassionate person, always doing whatever she could for others.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Dean McFadden and Harry Mowen, and an uncle, Ted McFadden.
Survivors include her 4-year-old son, Brenden Danielson of Havre; parents Tom and Betty Mowen of Havre; brother Corey (Shiloh) Mowen of Rifle, Colo.; grandmothers, LaVerna McFadden of Lakeside and Thelma Mowen of Bozeman; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorials in Heather's honor may be made to an educational trust fund for her son, Brenden Danielson, c/o Tom and Betty Mowen, 309 Sagebrush Drive, Havre, MT 59501. The trust will be set up at Bear Paw Credit Union.
Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
Gayle E. Eskildsen
Gayle A. Eskildsen, 76, of Lake Worth, Fla., died May 14, 2001, at his residence.
Born July 16, 1924, in Eureka to Walter and Margaret Sorensen Eskildsen, he married
Vivian E. Tuckey on Nov. 27, 1943, in Peoria, Ill. She died March 24, 1984, in Memphis, Tenn.
He also was preceded in death by one infant son, one daughter, two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are three sons, Arthur Gayle Jr. and Dale, both of Colorado, and Timothy of Blytheville, Ark.; three daughters, Janet Eskildsen of Bancroft, Ontario, Canada, Mary Tonning of Princeville Ill., and Elizabeth Gill of Lake Worth Fla.; one sister, Anita Gilmond of Eureka; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a lumberjack in Montana for many years and later was a tool and die maker for Shakeproof in Elgin Ill.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
Private graveside services were held at Yates City cemetery in Yates City, Ill. The Rev. Rex Hendrix officiated.
MAE GIESICK
SUMNER, Wash. - Mae Giesick, 78, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2003.
A memorial service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 245 Valley Avenue, Sumner, Wash.
She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Agnes Wilson of Havre.
She was preceeded in death by her husband Jack Giesick.
She is survived by her sons, Larry Auge of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Allan Auge of Puyallup, Wash.; sisters, Maxine Catt of Havre, Darlene Sharp and Marlene Malone, both of Spokane, Wash.; nieces and nephews, Myrna, Jim and Cindy; grandchildren, Erin, Suenun, Jimmy, Todd, Molly and Eric; and four great-grandchildren.

Edna B. Grob
Edna B. Grob, 64, a life-time resident of the Tobacco Valley, died Jan. 22 at her home in Rexford.
She was born at Eureka on May 31, 1937, to Merton M. Tiffany and Mandy Clemons Tiffany. She was raised and educated in the Tobacco Valley.
She and her late husband Fred had owned and operated the Frontier Bar in Rexford for many years until their retirement. Her husband Fred preceded her in death in 1988. She had remained in Rexford until the time of her death.
Survivors include her son Rufus Grob of Rexford; three daughters, Marilyn Smith of Nelson, B.C.; Phoebe Baker of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Pearl Fowler of Kalispell; sisters Laurie Reynolds of Eureka; Elsie Benda of Olympia, Wash.; and Edith Breitenstein of Troy; two brothers, Elwood (Peanuts) Tiffany of Eureka; and Buster Tiffany in Baker City, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to your local chapter of Special Olympics.
Harvey L. Swenson
Harvey L. Swenson, 94, died Jan. 23, 2002, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
He was the 10th of 11 children born to Martin and Julian Peterson Swenson in El Paso, Wis., on Jan. 20, 1908. At age 7 he came west with his family to homestead at Turner, Mont.
He joined the National Guard in Helena in the early 1930s. On June 23, 1935, he married
Esther Stroklund in Helena. He moved to the Flathead and resided there until 1946 when they moved to Eureka. Esther died in November of 1950. Harvey married
Olive "Sis" St. Peter on Dec. 26, 1952. She died in February of 1980.
Harvey was manager of the Farmer's Union service station from 1946 to 1956. He then went to work at the Hurst mill in Fortine until the construction of the Flathead Tunnel. He worked at Drews Manufacturing in Trego during that era. He went back to Hurst Mill, which became Plum Creek, and retired from there at age 72.
He loved to fish and was an avid golfer and bowler. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and four sisters. He will be missed but the family is thankful for the long time they had him with them.
Survivors include three daughters, Norma Osler and Sandra Robideau of Eureka, Debra Youngberg of Belgrade, Mont., seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Jan. 25. Services were Jan. 26, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Eureka.
Memorials may be made to the Mountain View Manor Nursing Home in Eureka.
KENNETH SCHARFE
BILLINGS - Kenneth Charles Scharfe, 82, of Billings, formerly of Havre, died peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2003, after a long battle with cancer.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1108 West 24th St., in Billings with the Rev. Carol Marhol officiating. A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Highland cemetery in Havre with the Rev. Brad Ulgeness officiating.
Kenneth was born in Laredo on June 13, 1920, to Otto and Bessie Scharfe. They moved to Alexandra, Minn., for a few years before moving to Havre when he was in the fourth grade. Ken graduated from Havre High School, where he excelled in many sports and enjoyed playing the trombone in the band. He attended the University of Montana for a short time before working at Montana National Bank in Havre.
On Dec. 5, 1941, he married
his high school sweetheart, Mildred McNeil. Soon after he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in World War II until January of 1946. He then began working for Ryan Havre Wholesale Foods and transferred to Ryan Wholesale in Billings (later Super Value) in 1973 as a nonfoods buyer and continued working there until retiring in 1984.
Ken's greatest loves were his wife and family. He was very proud of his grandchildren. Ken enjoyed his volunteer work at Deaconess Billings Clinic and was a big fan of the West High Bears. He and Milly seldom missed a basketball game, both boys and girls. Ken was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and received much comfort from its weekly Bible study.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alvin; and daughter in-law, Carlene Scharfe.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Milly; sons, Richard of Havre and Larry (Marie) of Billings; sister, Evelyn Spangelo of Havre; grandchildren, Dr. Stace Scharfe of Fort Collins, Colo.; Carrie (Jim) Kato of Havre, and Michael, Kevin and Katie Scharfe of Billings; and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Big Sky Hospice; Beth Whitworth, hospice nurse; staff at Deaconess Billings Clinic; and Drs. Ron Smith, Brock Whittenberger, and Derek Weiss.

John E. Ward, Sr.
John E. Ward, Sr., 83, died Wednesday June 12, 2002, at his home in Eureka from natural causes.
Graveside services were June 15 at the Tobacco Valley cemetery.
Russell C. (Rusty) Greene
Russell C. (Rusty) Greene, 68, died Tuesday, June 4, at his home in Eureka.
Services were June 8 at the Tobacco Valley cemetery.
GEORGE TURBAK
George Albert Turbak, 89, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at a Havre care facility after a long battle with cancer.
A public viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Holland and Bonine Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. with Tim Maroney officiating. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Jude Thaddeus Church with the Rev. Robert D. Grosch officiating.
George was born on Feb. 28, 1914, to Jacob and Jessie (Ruedig) Turbak in Fairmount, N.D. He attended school in Fairmount and Collegeville, Minn., and graduated from Fairmount High School in 1930.
He married
Renette L. Bogut on Aug. 10, 1940, in the Saint Jude Catholic Church.
He worked for Cudahy Packing, Co., Gamble Robinson, Black's Transfer, E.W. Elliot, and the Great Northern Railway. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railway in May of 1975.
He was one of the organizers of the Havre Central Roundtable and served as treasurer for several years. He was especially interested in the youth sports program. He was a member of St. Jude Parish, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, and Blue Horizon Good Sam's Chapter, where he also served as treasurer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. His family always came first in his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Jessie Turbak; sisters, Kay, Marguerite, and Joan; daughter, Joan Patricia Turbak.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Renette Turbak of Havre; daughters, Judy (Ed) Matter of Havre, Julie Turbak of Havre, Jeanne (Mike) Kase of Billings and Janice (John) Miller of Tulsa, Okla.; sister, Donna Theede of Overland, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

James M. Finch
James M. Finch, 41, died Wednesday, June 5, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
Services were June 9 at the Tobacco Valley cemetery.
HERSCHEL FOX
Herschel Fox, 86, retired farmer/rancher, former Hill County Commissioner and a lifetime residence of this area, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at his residence.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, in the Fifth Avenue Christian Church with burial following in the Highland cemetery.
Herschel was born on Aug. 29, 1917, at the family homestead 15 miles southeast of Havre on Clear Creek in Blaine County to Clyde and Bessie (Spoonemore) Fox. He attended Sprague School through the eighth grade and completed one year of high school in Chinook.
During the Depression Years, he would ride the rails to Waitsburg, Wash., to work in the wheat fields.
Herschel met Alice Sargent of Chinook and they were married
on June 11, 1938, in Malta. They made their home at the Milk River Coal mine 2ð miles northwest of Chinook for the next six years. Herschel trucked coal in the winter months as far east as Glasgow, Fort Peck and west as far as Kalispell. He trucked grain, hay, livestock and followed road construction in the summer.
In 1944 he and wife Alice moved to Havre. They operated a grain and cattle ranch northwest of Havre for the next 37 years, along with a dirt moving business. Herschel was elected county commissioner in 1962 and served one six-year term. He and Alice then moved out to the farm and lived there until 1998, when they moved back to their home in Havre.
Herschel was instrumental in developing the commercial property on West First from Rocky Mountain Packing west to Ezzie's Wholesale Bulk Plant on the south side of the highway by filling the swamp from 6 feet to 14 feet and building two large commercial buildings. While county commissioner he helped create the Beaver Creek Park Board and the Museum Board and was a charter member of each. He was instrumental in the development and fencing of the Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump. He helped in getting Bureau of Outdoor Recreation funds for the City of Havre's new swimming pool, Beaver Creek Park and the buffalo jump. He was a strong member of the Sixth Avenue Christian Church, serving on the church board for many years and on various committees's and as Board chairman several terms. Herschel played a large roll in planning and developing the new Fifth Avenue Christian Church. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge No. 55. Herschel and his wife Alice were avid elk hunters and went every year for years with saddle horses, packhorses and campers and many friends.
Herschel is survived by his wife Alice Fox of Havre; daughter, Karen Marie Fox (Tom) Demes of Juneau, Alaska; grandchildren Wade Fox of Bozeman; Teresa Fox Kreiter of Billings; great-grandchildren, Justin Fox of Bozeman, Riley Hughes of Grass Range, Tyson Kreiter of Billings, brother, Harold F.F. Fox of Edgar, Neb.; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, including Wayne Spoonemore, 102, of Fort Benton; and countless friends throughout the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Dennis Fox on April 13, 2002; sisters, Aletha (Hubert) Sprague, Vera (John) King and Emma Jane (Loren) Duked; and brother Gordon (Alice) Fox.
Memorials may be sent to the Havre Senior Citizens Center.
