Robert Watkins

Air Force veteran and former Cut Bank resident Robert Milo Watkins, 74, who owned Watkins Engineering and Associates in Bigfork, died of natural causes Friday, June 20, 2003 at his Kalispell home.

Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 in C.E. Conrad Memorial cemetery in Kalispell. Johnson Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Watkins of Kalispell; daughters Steph Olsen of Helena, Vicki Thomas of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Cindy Ellis of Anchorage, Alaska, and Tammie Self of Lafayette, La.; four stepchildren; a sister, Maxine Meznarich of Bigfork; four grandchildren; twelve stepgreat-grandchildren and eleven stepgreat-grandchildren.

PHOEBE SOKOLOSKI

DENTON, Texas - Phoebe Voves Sokoloski, 87 of Denton, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003 at a Denton medical center.

Family services will be held at a later date.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1916 in, Tonasket, Wash., to Albert and Stella Bower Schendel.

She married Emil Voves in July 1944 in Kalispell. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1978. She married Joseph Sokoloski on Feb. 5, 1982, in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1998. She was a retired nurse from St. John Lutheran Hospital in Libby.

She is preceded in death by sisters, Mildred O'Neal and Ella Combs; and brother, Woodrow Schendel.

Survivors include her daughters, Lil Lipp of Havre and Emie Hastings of Denton Texas; son, Gary Voves of Frisco, Texas; brothers, Wilson Schendel of Mesa, Ariz., and Chet Schendel of Three Forks; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton, Texas, are in charge of arrangements.

Jim L. Pollock
June 8, 1948-June 6, 2003

Jim L. Pollock, 54, of Aztec, passed away Friday, June 6, 2003 in Montrose, Colo. He was born June 8, 1948 in Montana.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 13, 2003, at the Church of the Nazarene in Aztec. Entombment will follow at Memory Gardens cemetery in Farmington.

Pallbearers were all of Jim's co-workers at Williams Field Services and his hunting friends.

Arrangements are entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel, 405 S. Main, Aztec, (505) 334-9332.

He was employed by Williams Field Services for 30-plus years. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid bow hunter. He also loved horses, roping and enjoyed bird hunting which he shared with his two favorite pals Joy and Jake. He lived live to the fullest and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Pam Pollock; his mother, Barbara Knickel and husband, Lee; daughters Rhonda Lytle and husband, Don, Terri Moore and husband, Eric, and Denise Norman; grandchildren, Devon Moore, Rachelle and David Lytle; sisters, Evelyn Snook and husband Ed, and Joyce McVickers and husband, Bob.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, George Pollocik; sister, Mary Pollock; and granddaughter, Taylor Moore.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity or church of your choice.

Blake Anderson

Blake Gregory Anderson, of Whitefish, died at the family home Sunday morning, June 22, 2003, from complications of diabetes.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 27, at the Whitefish Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Andy Kennaly officiating. Graveside will be Saturday, June 28 at 1 p.m. at Crown Hill cemetery in Cut Bank with Rev. Paul Kohler leading. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 26 at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish.

He was born July 17, 1956, in Farmington, N.M., and moved to Cut Bank at the age of seven months, where he attended grade school through the seventh grade until the family moved to Havre. He participated in competitive swimming in Cut Bank and Havre, in summer, AAU, and high school. He remained a lover of water sports all this life and spent many hours sailing on Whitefish Lake.

He attended Havre High School, MSU-Bozeman, MSU-Billings; while in Billings he learned the bagpipe, and played and marched with the Billings Bagpipe Band in many parades and functions, including the annual Red Lodge International Festival. In 1986 he moved to the Flathead Valley and worked with his father on the family Christmas Tree and Landscape plantation, until ill health required curtailment.

An avid reader, he was a science fiction buff, a coin collector, a collector of Celtic music, and a regular listener of The Thistle and Shamrock.

Blake has a huge heart, great courage, a kind, gentle and generous soul, and will be deeply missed by his parents, Mitzi and Bob Anderson of Whitefish, his brother Grant Anderson of Kalispell, his sister Dana Thompson, her husband, Joe Thompson of Seattle, his nephew Will Thompson, his aunt Cecelia Banks of Avon, Conn., cousins Tracy O'Reilly and Imogen O'Reilly of Missoula, Ann Reichling and Elizabeth Salazar of Irvine, Calif., Susan Bradley of Collinsville, Conn., Virginia Durst of Simsbury, Conn., and Tom Banks of Atlanta, Ga.

Memorials are requested for the Diabetes Association, or the Whitefish Athletic and Aquatic facility.

KATHARINE BYRD

WOLF POINT - Katharine Mary "Kat" Byrd, 18, of Wolf Point died in Missoula on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

A funeral service was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today at Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Steve Zabrocki officiating. Interment will be held at Highland cemetery in Havre at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Katharine "Kat" was born Aug. 16, 1985, in Shelby to Donald and Annette (Codden) Byrd.

She was raised in Wolf Point and attended schools there. She joined her sister Rachael as a student at the University of Montana in Missoula. She worked as a lifeguard at the Wolf Point city pool for three years and at Old Town Grill for four years. Kat really enjoyed her work and co-workers.

Katharine had a beautiful voice, and loved playing the piano and sharing her gift of music with others. She was a member of the Swing Choir at WPHS for three years. She won the National Outstanding Senior Award for music. She was an avid volleyball player throughout high school. Katharine was very involved in her church community as a cantor, a member of the youth choir, a minister of the Cup, and Eucharistic minister to residents at the Faith Home. She was very social and loved spending time with her friends.

Katharine was preceded in death by her half-brother, Walker Byrd of Helena in January 2000.

Survivors include her father, Donald Byrd of Helena; mother, Annette (Codden) Byrd of Wolf Point; sisters, Sarah Byrd, a student at the University of Minnesota, and Rachael Byrd, a student at the University of Montana in Missoula; grandparents, Clayton and Pauline Codden of Havre; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mary O. Kinney

Mary O. Kinney, 72, of Troy, died Feb. 2 at St. John Lutheran Hospital in Libby.

She was born in North Lincoln County at Gateway on March 14, 1928, to Merton M. Tiffany and Amanda Clemons Tiffany; she was raised and educated in the Eureka area. She married Archie Kinney March 4, 1946, at Kalispell.

She and her husband came to Troy in 1964 where she had made her home for the past 39 years and also had been a seasonal resident of Juneau, Alaska, for three years.

Her husband Archie, preceded her in death in 1983; she was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a son, Archie Kinney, Jr. of Troy; six daughters: Rosemary Leach of Shelton, Wash., Mildred Alefteras of Rochester, Wash., June Powers of Forks, Wash., Betty Oberdorf of Fortine, Margaret Reicker of Northport, Wash., and Mattie Huntsman of Eureka; she is also survived by a special friend, Dallas Haaby of Troy; four sisters: Elsie Benda of Olympia, Wash., Laurie Reynolds of Eureka, Edna Grob of Rexford, and Edith Breitenstein of the Yaak; two brothers: Buster Tiffany of Baker, Ore., and Peanuts Tiffany of Eureka; 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Sunday and Monday. Private interment will be at a later date.

DELMAR WOLFE

Delmar Daniel Wolfe, 80, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at a Chester hospital.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester, followed by a reception. Burial of ashes will be at the Erickson cemetery south of Chester.

Delmar was born May 23, 1923, to Daniel and Josephine (Steen) Wolfe in Columbia Falls. He received his early schooling in the Flathead Valley, then came to Chester with his family in 1933. He grew up on the Steen farm south of town and attended the Erickson country school nearby. He graduated from Chester High School in 1941.

In those early years, Delmar worked on the Arvin Boreen farm, then began farming on his own. In addition, he bought a small "drive-in" restaurant in Tacoma, Wash., which he operated during the nonfarming season for several years. He was a certified private pilot and did some aerial crop straying in the 1950s. He also worked as a part-time bartender at the Chester Vets Club for several years.

Delmar married Gerry (Grubb) Groseclose on July 12, 1962, at Sparta, N.C. They made their home on his farm south of Chester during most of their married life. In addition to farming, he worked in farm implement sales, first for Thielman Implement of Chester and then for Morris Rodweeder of Canada. Because of declining health, he retired from farming in 1986. He and Gerry continued to live on the farm until 1994, when they moved to Chester. He had numerous health problems and hospitalizations these past few years.

Delmar was a lifetime member (56 years) of the Elks Club in the Havre and Shelby lodges, a charter member of the Chester Lions Club, a longtime member of the Joplin Masonic Lodge, and a confirmed member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. In addition, he served on the early board of the Liberty County Hospital and was a committeeman for the local Democratic Party. He was a loyal blood donor over the years.

Delmar enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including flying, hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, camping, dancing and bowling. He was an avid fan of local sports and also enjoyed professional sports. He always cheered for the underdogs or any team that was playing the New York Yankees. He was a good cook, especially his breakfasts and homemade stews. He also enjoyed playing cards, mainly pinochle. A good handyman, he liked to "putter in his shop" and he always took pride and care in his machinery, equipment and automobiles. He liked to "doodle" or read; he was well-read on many subjects. He collected belt buckles, miniature vintage toy cars and commemorative whiskey bottles.

Up until the past few years, Delmar was a social man who loved to be with people. He had a good sense of humor and liked to tell stories. You always knew Delmar was in the room because of his hearty, distinct laugh. His children will remember him as being patient and understanding.

Delmar and Gerry were married for 41 years and were good friends and companions. They made several memorable trips, including their Caribbean and Hawaii adventures.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Anna Mae Hanson and Maxine Wigen; brother-in-law, Leo Wigen; and grandson, Jason Groseclose.

Survivors include his wife, Gerry of Chester; son, Ron (Bev) Groseclose of Hingham; daughters, Sharon (Robert) Gomke of Kremlin and Linda (Don) Dill of San Diego, Calif.; four grandsons; brothers, Kenneth (Betty Jean) Wolfe, Dean (Fay) Wolfe and Roger (Fay) Wolfe, all of Chester; brother-in-law, Albert Hanson of Chester; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be made to the Liberty County Hospital, the "Gift of Life, " Our Savior's Lutheran Church, or to a donor's choice.

Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester.

MARLENE HANSON

Alma Marlene Hanson, 70, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at a Havre hospital of natural causes.

A prayer vigil will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the Holland and Bonine Funeral Chapel. The funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Jude Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert D. Grosch officiating. A fellowship will be held immediately after the Mass at the St. Jude Parish Center.

Marlene was born on June 18, 2003, in Hingham to Edward and Alma (Voss) Norenberg. She attended school in Hingham and graduated from Hingham High School in 1951. After high school, Marlene worked in Havre at Patterson's Clothing Store.

She met Kenneth R. Hanson and the couple were married on Nov. 8, 1952, and made their home in Hingham. Marlene worked with Kenneth at the Phillips 66 station in Hingham. After living in Malta for one year, the family moved to Havre in 1964 and Marlene went to work for F.A. Buttrey in the women's ready-to-wear department. Marlene left there after eight years and went to work at the Credit Bureau until taking a position at Vyonnes Dress Shop as the manager. In 1978 she went to work for Lelok Travel until retiring in July of 1995.

Marlene enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, playing card games, cooking and baking. But most of all she loved her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters and the Eagles Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Alma (Voss) Norenberg; husband, Kenneth Hanson in 2001; sisters, Louise Blake, Dorothy Jones, Verda Alex and Vera Rambo; brothers, Raymond Buzz Norenberg and Ed Norenberg.

Survivors include her children, Deborah (Keith) Guenther of Glasgow, Chan (Sheila) Hanson of Havre and Todd (Erica) Hanson of Havre; sister, June Richter of Havre; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to The Gift of Life Housing, P.O. Box 7008, Great Falls, MT 59406-7008 or to the Relay for Life, c/o Harvey Brock at the Havre Daily News, P.O. Box 431 Havre, MT 59501.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

Petra Joy (Strand) Siemens

Petra Joy (Strand) Siemens died Feb. 3, 2001.

She was born to Melvin F. and Grace E. Strand on June 19, 1932, in Kalispell.

She grew up on a ranch near Nashua, Mont., attended Northern Montana College in Havre, and graduated from the University of Georgia.

She married Nicolai Siemens June 11, 1955. As an elementary teacher she taught in Georgia, Wyoming, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. She is survived by her husband; two children, Monica Willey of Denver, Colo., and Larry Siemens of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren Nicholas and Matthew Willey of Littleton, Colo.; three brothers, Robert of Labrador, Canada, Kenneth of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Palmer of Spokane, Wash.; two sisters, Phylis Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Signe Aspinwall of Riverton, Wyo.; 21 nieces and nephews and nine in-laws.

Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Paul McKibben at the Fortine Community Church on Friday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Eileen E. Walsh

Eileen E. Walsh, 81, died Jan. 29, 2001, at Brendan House in Kalispell.

She was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Yakima, Wash., to Christian and Annie (Burkardt) Maier.

Memorial services were Feb. 1 with Pastor Glenn Burfeind of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choosing.

Inez Mae Goddard

Inez Mae Goddard, 72, of Eureka, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at her daughter's home in Eureka after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 10, 1928, to Willis and Hattie Hayman Morrill in Bangor, Maine.

At age 7, both of her parents died and she was adopted by Gladys and Edward Tabor in Lewiston, Maine, where she attended school. She married Robert James Dick, Jr. in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1970. Inez then married Richard Goddard. She worked in shoe factories in Maine, and was a waitress until she retired.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her adopted parents; her adopted brother, Edward Curtis Tabor and his wife; and her brothers, Barney, Sparky, and Clyde Morrill.

Survivors include two sisters, Shirley and Phyllis; one daughter, Cheryl Parkman and her husband, David, of Eureka; four sons, Robert James Dick III of Note, Ore., Curtis Perry Dick, Thomas Edward Dick, Norman Michael Dick; four grandchildren, Michael Corey, Kyle Corey, Tamisha Vezina and her husband, Kevin, Farrah Hoyt and her husband, Eric; six great-grandchildren, Kevin, Natasha, Dustin, Joshua, Mackenzie and Ethan; nephews, Michael and Jeff, and a niece, Nancy.

Services will be Thursday, June 14, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Nelson and Vial Funeral Home in Eureka. Interment will be at the Tobacco Valley cemetery.
