And if I go, while you’re still here ... know that I live on,
Vibrating to a different measure — behind a veil.
You will not see me, so you must have faith.
I will wait for the time when we can soar together again —
Both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to it fullest and when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart — I will be there.

Donald Lloyd Merritt
HELENA – Donald Lloyd Merritt, age 69, of Helena, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 10, 2001, in Helena. A tribute to the life of Don Merritt will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel with Gabe Brennan presiding.
Don left behind a better world simply by his presence in it. He fully embraced the outdoors, whether it be cutting firewood, fishing, floating rivers or enjoying his special affinity to bridges.
Don was as loyal a man no one could ever find, which was demonstrated by his constant helping hand, close and true friendships and his deep devotion to his only child – daughter Deven and granddaughter Rachael.
He enjoyed playing pool, watching sports, puttering around home and taking occasional road trips in search of the ultimate cheeseburger and Don could really “cut a rug.”
His intensely dry and quick wit was matched by no one and most often you had to study his droll expression to discover whether he was serious or kidding. His sense of humor was truly unique and one-of-a-kind.
Don brought laughter as well as wisdom to those intertwined in his life. Don was an independent and solitary man who lived life on his own terms, always remaining true to himself.
He served his country during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany. He returned to Montana and began a lifetime career with Mountain Bell, retiring in 1989.
Don’s parents, Clifton and Adeline Merritt of Billings, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Deven and granddaughter Rachael of Helena; and several cousins and many dear friends.
Don, we will miss your love, advice, humor and philosophy and we will carry on in your honor and memory.
