Catherine Rice Schwidde
A longtime Billings resident, Catherine Rice Schwidde, 82, died on Oct. 4, 2000, surrounded by her family. Kate, as she was known, was born Oct. 3, 1918, the daughter of Howard and Jane (Doyle) Rice in Boone, Iowa. She graduated from Boone High School and from Iowa State University with a BA in home economics.
Immediately upon graduation, Kate and two cousins traveled throughout western Europe. The three ladies were on one of the last ocean liners leaving Germany before the commencement of World War II. Kate then resumed her education and obtained her master’s in child welfare from the University of Iowa.
On Feb. 28, 1942, Kate and Jess T. Schwidde, M.D. were united in marriage in Boone. Jess, who continues to write and publish poetry, practiced medicine in Iowa and Montana for over 40 years with a specialty in neurosurgery.
Kate was an ardent “birder” with a special yen for pileated woodpeckers and cardinals. She was also a talented water color painter who specialized in miniatures and who won numerous awards for her landscapes, principally old Montana barns, wild flowers, and birds. In her early years she enjoyed playing golf and bridge. Kate later was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she held numerous positions, including the State of Montana regent and delegate to the DAR National Convention. Kate was also an active member in the Yellowstone County Landmarks program and PEO.
Kate is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Jess; her brother, Clarence (Mary Beth) Rice of Fort Dodge, Iowa; two sons, Charles Rice (Mary) Schwidde of Alexandria, Va., and Jess Thomas Schwidde of Pittsford, Vt.; and a daughter, Susan (Jim) Sidd of Green Valley, Ariz.
Kate’s parents and her daughter, Katie Jane, preceded her in death.
Visitation for Kate will be at Dahl Funeral Chapel on Friday afternoon Oct. 6, from noon to 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Oct. 6, at Dahl Funeral Chapel, 10 Yellowstone Ave., with interment to follow in Mountview cemetery. There will be a reception following the interment in the hospitality room at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Those not wishing to go to the cemetery may begin the reception while waiting for the family to return.
The Schwidde family wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in her name to The Catherine J. Schwidde Endowment Fund at MSU-Billings or to the charity of choice. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Linda Worrell
MILES CITY – Linda Worrell, 51, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Holy Rosary Health Center.
Visitation will begin Friday at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. The prayer service will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday and the funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, both at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Custer County cemetery.
Kate and Kalli Abarr
POWELL, Wyo. – Kate and Kalli Abarr, twin infant daughters of Don and Jennifer “Jaye” Abarr of Powell, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000. They are survived by their parents, sister, Madison Brae Abarr and numerous family members.
Private funeral services will be held. Miratsky-Eaton Funeral Home of Powell is in charge of arrangements.
Alfred Alai Akre
GLASGOW – Alfred Alai Akre, 90, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Valley View Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church with burial in Highland cemetery.
Dale Davis
SAVAGE – Funeral services for Dale Davis, 68, of Savage, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Virgil Hollen of the Bethel Free Lutheran Church of Culbertson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Dale Allen Davis was born on Aug. 19, 1932, in Fargo, N.D., and was the second oldest of 10 children of Edith (Knudsvig) and Everett Davis. He lived in Divide and Williams County, N.D., and moved to Williston in 1945. He started school in Sioux Trail, N.D., and later in Williston, N.D. He joined the Air Force in Nov. 17, 1953, and served overseas in North Africa.
He married
Sue Ellen Clark on Sept. 29, 1954. They lived in Williston from 1954-1957 and Dale worked for the railroad and then went into trucking. They lived in Plentywood, Glasgow and Billings, where their daughter Lissa Jean was born in 1960. In 1961, the family moved to the Sidney and Savage area. In 1979, they moved to Glendive, and then back to Savage in 1987. Dale worked as a truck driver for Lloyd Becker Trucking, Williston Scobey Transfer, Hellfrey Motor Freight, H F Johnson, Farmers Union Transportation and Cenex. He became an independent trucker in 1983 and at his death, was leased with Farrell Transport.
Dale never met a stranger and loved life and other people to the fullest. He was a beloved husband to Sue, father to Lissa and Jack, grandfather to Eddie, age 3, and Steffanie, age 1; brother, and friend to everyone he met! His family, friends and dedication to his work filled his life.

Jack Gabel of Huntley on Sept. 24, 1983, and they have blessed Dale and Sue with two grandchildren who are the apple of their grandparents’ eyes! Prior to having grandchildren of their own, Dale had many “adopted” kids. He was “Uncle Dale” to many both by blood and by choice. He never met a child he couldn’t relate to and they flocked to him because he loved them so much! His humor and straight forwardness were appreciated by many, and he would talk to anyone and become a friend. He was loyal and a hero to many. His life and example touched many lives in a positive way. He will be greatly missed on this earth! He had a big and gentle heart and a smile we will remember forever!
Dale died, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at the Mercy Medical Hospital in Williston following a heart attack.
Survivors include his wife, Sue, of Savage; daughter, Lissa and her husband, Jack; grandchildren, Eddie and Steffanie Gabel, of Huntley; four brothers, Tewy (Bettyann) of Medina, N.D., Butch (Carol) of Souris, N.D., and Rick (Myrna) and Bob Davis, both of Billings; two sisters, Cathy (Frank) Cobos, of Burnsville, Minn., and Edith (Donovan) Holt of Sidney; many very special uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. You know who you are!
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Duane, Ronald and Joe; three uncles, and two aunts.
Pearl Schultz Doe
Pearl Schultz Doe was born in Avon, S.D., on Sept. 27, 1907, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Schultz, and passed away Oct. 4, 2000.
She came with her parents to Lambert in 1916 where she attended grade school; she graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1926. She married
Wallace B. Doe in Columbus, Mont., on the day she graduated from high school. They had one daughter, Beverlee (Gordon) Sveinson.
They lived most of their life in Montana with some time during WWII in Idaho, Washington and Virginia. She and her husband operated Wally's Town and Country Cleaners in Billings Heights. They were early members of the Billings Heights Commercial Club. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Church and Stonecroft Bible Study. She loved the church and gospel music and was active in church work in the past. She was a member of Moss Agate Chapter #126, OES, Billings. She had been a volunteer as a Pink Lady at the Billings Deaconess Medical Center for many years.
After retirement, she and her late husband spent winters in Arizona. She enjoyed golfing, crafts of all kinds, sewing, and was devoted to her family. In her later years she resided at St. John's Retirement Home where her mother was one of the first guests in 1964.
Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Beverlee (Gordon) Sveinson of Billings; one sister, Grace (Tim) O'Leary of Billings; three grandchildren, Pamela, Craig and Doug (Jamie) Sveinson; four great-grandchildren, Lee, Nina, Gordon and Bailee; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Her husband; parents; two sisters, Nina Reichert and Alice Plummer; and two brothers, Albert Schultz and Howard Schultz predeceased her.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 9, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Memorials may be made to the Raynauds Foundation of the Arthritis Foundation Montana Chapter, 1643 Lewis Avenue, Billings.
Katherine M. Emerick
Katherine M. Emerick, 72, of Laurel, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Billings Deaconess Medical Center.
She was born in Billings on April 3, 1928, the daughter of Conrad and Amelia (Kessel) Kaufman. She attended Billings Senior High School. Katherine was baptized May 6, 1928, and confirmed on April 18, 1943, at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Billings.
She worked at the Billings High Quality Dairy, Lyric Theatre, Woolworth’s Dime Store and S & L Clothing Store. Katherine married
Gene Emerick on Oct. 27, 1956. She and Gene owned the Exxon Auto Service Center on North 27th and Ninth Avenue for 13 years.
Survivors include her husband, Gene, of Laurel; her mother, Amelia Kessel Kaufman, three brothers, Ralph Kaufman, Roy Kaufman and George Kaufman, and one sister, Geraldine Bangert, all of Laurel; nieces and nephews, Deborah Bangert, Penny Barry, Kim Bangert, Scott Emerick, Shawn Emerick and Sharla Emerick, all of Billings; four aunts, Leah Becker of Billings, Tilly White of Joliet, Martha Kaufman of Billings and Marie Wilkerson of California; two uncles, Rudy Kessel of Powell, Wyo., and Henry Kessel of Billings. Katherine was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur “Buddy” Kaufman and her father, Conrad Kaufman.
Katherine spent her entire life in the service and care for others, be it two legged or four. She gave all of her time willingly and unconditionally and will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 409 S. 36th St. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation will be at Smith’s Downtown Chapel through noon Friday. The casket will be closed at church.

Ben N. Forbes
Benjamin N. Forbes, 76, of Billings, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at his home. Ben was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Lewistown, the son of Ben N. and Nell Forbes. He graduated from Fergus County High School in Lewistown in 1942.
Ben attended the University of California at San Diego for one year before joining the U.S. Navy in 1943. As part of the Navy’s V-12 program, he attended Northern Arizona State University at Flagstaff and Columbia University, New York City.
Ben volunteered for the Underwater Demolition Program and served as a Navy frogman until the war’s end when he was discharged with the rank of lieutenant j.g. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Colorado where he received a business degree, the University of Montana School of Law where he received his LLB. in 1951, and New York University School of Law where he received an LL.M. in taxation in 1957. He began practicing law in Billings at the law firm of Brown and Davis in 1951, retiring from the firm of Anderson. Symmes, Forbes, Peete and Brown in 1980. He continued in private practice until 1995.
Ben married
Donna Drew in 1952 in Billings. They were divorced in 1974. He married
Betty Anderson in 1975 whom he later divorced.
A fine bridge player, Ben received a life master rating in duplicate bridge in 1999 from the American Contract Bridge League. He was an avid golfer, playing in many of the state and local tournaments.
Survivors include three children, Ben (Betsy) of Seattle, Douglas (Kristine) of Seattle, Lynn and her husband Eric Thomson of Lesotho in southern Africa; four grandchildren; and his brother Don Forbes and wife Betsey of Billings. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Frances.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary Monday afternoon, Oct. 9, at 3:30 p.m. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Opal Versal Jackson
HILLSBORO, Ore. – Opal Versal Jackson, 81, formerly of Denton and Lewistown, Mont., died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, of natural causes.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Valley Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Monday. Donelson, Sewell & Mathews Mortuary in Hillsboro is in charge.
Chasity Dawn Marie Miller
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Chasity Dawn Marie Miller, daughter of Kristine L. Schoenfeldt and Christopher R. Miller of Sheridan, was stillborn, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Champion Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in the baby section of the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.
Survivors include her parents; her twin brother and sister, Aaron and Ashley Schoenfeldt of the family home; her grandparents, Lee and Terry Scogin of Sheridan, and Steve and LaDonna Zimmerman of Imlay, Nev.; and her great-grandparents, Jerry Scogin of Worland, Alvin and Dawn Kuhr of Imlay, Nev., Loraine Guthrie of Kentucky and Kenneth R. Humphrey of Owensboro, Ky.
Stella Margaret Neely
BASIN, Wyo. – Stella Margaret Neely, 95, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the Wyoming Retirement Center.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Wyoming Retirement Center Chapel.

Ruby Peterson
BUFFALO, Wyo. – Ruby Peterson, 80, died Thursday, Oct, 5, 2000, at Johnson County Health Care Center.
Visitation will be from 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday before the services at 11 a.m. Monday, all at the Adams Funeral Home.
Graveside services will follow at Willow Grove cemetery.
Joyce Young
Joyce Young, 57, of Billings, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at her home of cancer.
She was born Oct. 23, 1942, in Billings, the daughter of Otto and Elsie Kobleske.
She was educated at Orchard School and Senior High and married
Charles Edward Young in Billings.
Survivors include her husband, Charles, her mother, Elsie Taylor; a son, Bryan Young; a daughter, Christina Harris; two grandchildren, Paul and Tyler, and a brother Ronald (Sung) Kobleske of Aurora, Colo.
Cremation has taken place. At her request, no services are planned.
Arrangements were by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

HINSDALE – June Hillman Cook, 81, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow of natural causes.
Memorial services will be held during the 2001 Milk River Days in Hinsdale this coming summer.
Cremation has taken place. Adams Funeral Home & Crematory of Malta is in charge.
