Corky Schwend

Corky, as Grandma Schwend called him, was born to Jess and Mildred Shelmerdine Schwend on March 15, 1930, in Bridger.
He received his education in St. Xavier and Hardin, served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He married Donnalee Sargent on Feb. 6, 1960, in Bend, Ore. From this marriage, they had three children. They divorced in 1986 but always maintained deep respect for each other. He did not remarry but had a long and loving relationship with Judy Murdock.
Corky was a member of the Northwest Ranch Cowboy Association, a 48-year member of the Sheridan and Hardin Elks Lodge, Rodeo Cowboys Association and single steer roper.
To his family, kids and grandkids alike, he was of the “old school” as a true cowboy and gentleman. His love and respect for his family and the range knew no bounds. When a friend sat on a good horse, he always asked, “Does your butt laugh?” He was a great prankster and when roundups came and serious work was done, he loved to pull his famous hat trick. “I always know a real cowboy five minutes after he walked into the corral.” This legacy that he left for his children will live on forever through their passion for horses and the land.
Our Dad – Of all the western legends and heroes of my youth, the ones that stood for honor, dignity and truth, there stands a man among them much taller than the rest of all who stole our hearts away. We love our Dad the best!
He was preceded in death by his father, Jess “Cowboy Dad.”

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Friday in the Hardin Middle School Auditorium. Interment will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the family plot in Bridger. All who would like to take a last ride with Cork are invited to bring a horse saddled up and be ready to ride from the Bridger Arena to the cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
