DEWEY DENNETT EMMETT
Dewey Dennett Emmett, at the age of 74, died at his home in Hysham on Thursday, June 5, 2003. He was born February 24, 1929 in Lovell, Wyo., the son of Dewey True and Beatrice (Dennett) Emmett. Dewey graduated from Lovell High School in 1947. He put his roots down in Silesia, Mont., ranching with his dad until his dad’s death in 1960.
On May 27, 1967, Dewey was united in marriage to Della V. Ford in Billings. They continued to ranch in Silesia until the summer of 1985 when Dewey became the caretaker of the Hysham Rest Area, working there until his retirement in the spring of 2002. Off and on for the last 15 years, Dewey worked for the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department writing permits for the block management program. He was an excellent horseman, loved to fish and hunt, enjoyed landscaping and having coffee “with the guys.”
Dewey is survived by his wife of 36 years, Della; daughter Mary B. (Ken) Hyvonen of Red Lodge; son Dewey G. (Kathie) Emmett of Columbus; son Delane D. (Laurie) Emmett of Rock Springs, Wyo.; daughter Melanee Emmett of Billings; mother, Beatrice Emmett of Hurricane; sisters Beatrice Ogden of Hurricane and Donna Reynolds of Washington, Mont. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His dad, Dewey True Emmett, and granddaughter Rachel Emmett preceded him in death.
He was a great husband, father, father-in-law, friend and grandpa.
He will be missed dearly.
A memorial service was held at the Hysham Presbyterian Church on Monday, June 9. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Dewey was laid to rest in the Red Lodge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Gideon’s Bibles or to St. Jude’s.

Sondra Sanford
Sondra Lee "Sandy" Sanford, 62, of Springfield, Mo., died Sept. 17, 2003, at her home in Springfield, Mo.
She was born Nov. 8, 1940, in Harrison, Ark., to John Bug and Virginia Lee Eagle.
She was a graduate of the University of Arkansas. She was united in marriage to Raymond L. Sanford in Dallas, Texas, on June 21, 1980. She had resided in Springfield, Mo., for the past three years moving there from Whitefish.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond; two sons and their wives, Sam and Sabrina Carter, and Joe and Jennifer Carter; a step-son and his wife, Christopher Scott and Kimberly Sanford; two step-daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Robert Thomas, and Stephanie and Robert Kaufert; a sister and her husband, Martha "Marty" and Donald Knapp; a half-brother and his wife, Bruce and Terri McElhaney; seven grandchildren, John Bug Carter, Jason Carter, Tanner, Kyle and Alex Hux, and Kelsey and Cameron Kaufert; a sister-in-law, Sue Thomas; special friends, Bob and Lynne Mack, Mike and JoAnne Evans, Dan and Laurette Smith, and the Spencer girls, all of Whitefish.
Memorial service will be held Sept. 27, at 2 p.m., in Gorman-Scharpf University Chapel, in Springfield, Mo., with the Rev. Charles Bahn officiating.

June Haswell
June Haswell died Sept. 5, 2003 after a short illness. She was born in Superior, Wis. on June 1, 1919, to Roy Arnold and Jesse Clarke. The family moved to Whitefish in 1921. She was married to Wayne Petersen from 1941-43, and they had a son, Larry Petersen.
June worked at the Crescent Department Store in Spokane during World War II. She and Larry moved back to Whitefish in 1946, where she worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a secretary.
She married Frank Haswell in 1951 and moved to Helena in 1967. She stayed in Helena until June of this year, when she moved to Billings. June's passion was sapphire mining and especially giving the sapphires she found to her relatives and friends. She taught many people how to swim and coached competitive swimming for the Helena Lions Swim Team. June was an accomplished bridge player, loved to entertain, and found great pleasure and plenty of resistance in trying to teach her sons how to set a table. June loved her politics, and never missed voting in 63 years. Her love of reading has been passed to her sons and grandchildren. She was a generous, loving person with a sense of style and wonderful sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, son Jack, brother Bob, and sisters Mary, Jean and Iva. Survivors include a brother, Roy Arnold of Spokane; sons Larry (Pat) Petersen of Billings, Frank (Kelly) Haswell of Seattle, Bruce (Jean) Haswell of Billings, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the University of Montana Law School, for the Justice Frank I. and June A. Haswell Scholarship.

CATHERINE MAI
Catherine Mai, 92, of Bridger and Laurel passed away Friday, June 6, 2003 at Billings Health And Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 28, 1910, in Golden, Mont., a daughter of David and Katherine (Maier) Zier. She received her education in Fromberg, Mont.
Catherine was united in marriage to John Mai, December 25, 1929 in Bridger.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and music, especially listening to piano music by her daughter’s side.
Survivors include her loving family; a son Eugene (Sharon) Mai, and a daughter, Caryl Huether, both of Billings; one brother, John Zier of Billings and one sister, Mary Olels, of Redmond, Wash., five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, two brothers, one sister and two half-brothers.
Services were held Tuesday, June 10 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Laurel. Interment was in the Bridger Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of one’s choice. Smith Funeral Chapel Laurel was in charge of arrangements.

Carol Mintz
Carol Weber Mintz, 36, of Whitefish, formerly of Westchester, Calif., died on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003. She fought a long, hard battle with malignant melanoma for over five years. No matter how hard things were, she never gave up; "she was a true inspiration for us all."
She was born on Oct. 7, 1966, to Kathleen and Frank Weber of Westchester. She is survived by her husband, Joshua, formerly of Redondo Beach, Calif., whom she married on Aug. 4, 2000, here in the Flathead Valley.
They have resided in Whitefish ever since.
She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret and Mary Weber; Josh's mother and stepfather, Dayle and Tony Hernandez of Redondo Beach and Kalispell; stepmother and father, Vicki and Robert Mintz of Westport, Conn.; brothers-in-law, Tory Hernandez and Callan Mintz, and sister-in-law, Chasen Mintz; grandfathers, Victor Miller of Redondo Beach, Tony Hernandez of Hayward, Calif.; and grandmother, Ethel Mintz of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Carol leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and lots of friends from the valley that she and Josh have come to know and love, as well as friends she had known and loved for years in California. She will be dearly missed.
A service will be held at Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, (today) and the funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at St. Charles Church in Whitefish.

GLEN D. MOREFIELD
ROBERTS – Glen D. Morefield, 72, of Roberts, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, June 9, 2003 at St. Vincent Hospital & Health Center in Billings following a sudden illness.
Glen was born on January 25, 1931 in Buckheart, Missouri, a daughter of Lemuel and Lottie Jo (Hicks) Berry. She was raised and educated in Douglas County, Missouri. Glen moved to California where she met Robert Morefield, and they were married in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The family moved to Montana in 1969, settling in Roberts. Mrs. Morefield was employed as a dietary supervisor for 22 years at Cedar Wood Villa nursing home in Red Lodge before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976; a grandson, Paul Glen Morefield; her first great-grandson, Colter Dean Crowder; and one sister, Sue Crawford.
Survivors include her special loved one, Gordon A. Boltz of Roberts; two daughters, Shirley J. Crowder of Roberts and children Michele Neurath, Melinda (Dan) Proffitt and Michael Crowder, and Ruth D. (Gary) Dusbabek of Roberts and children Gary R. (Nicole) Dusbabek, John (Elicia) Dusbabek and Emily (C.J.) Grisham; three sons, John (Jennifer) Morefield of LaJunta, Colo. and children Chris (Dianna) Morefield, Valerie Morefield and Adam Morefield, Elmer (Sandy) Morefield of Elburn, Illinois and daughter Alexandra Morefield, and Ted (Lisa) Morefield of Roberts and children Clay (Peggy) Downam and Heather (Scott) Eisner; beloved great-grandchildren Breanne, Dayne, Kaylee and Zoey Proffitt, Anissa, Christopher and Hannah Grisham, Gavan, Jackson, Paul and Joseph Dusbabek, Wyatt Eisner and Quinton Downam; two sisters, Mary McCleary and Shirley Twitty; two brothers, Elmer Berry and Bill Riley; and the daughters of Gordon A. Boltz, Gail, Nancy, Molly, Judy and Gloria and their families.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16 in Roberts United Methodist Church. Graveside committal services were Monday in the Lavina Cemetery. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Roberts Community Foundation, P.O. Box 284, Roberts, Montana 59070.

Catherine Nowacky
Catherine Ann Nowacky, 75, a former resident of Whitefish, died Aug. 29, 2003, in Federal Way, Wash.
Her husband, Ed, and family moved to Whitefish in 1975 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They operated the Whitefish Motel for two years and were involved in wide variety of community activities for several years before relocating to Reno, Nev., in 1987.
They moved to the Seattle area in 1992.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Joseph and Veronika Mokosh; son, Barry Nowacky; sister, Betty Mokosh; brothers, Joe, Steve, and Paul Mokosh.
She is survived by her husband, Ed of Kent, Wash.; son, Elliott, who is currently serving with the U. S. Army in Iraq; daughter, Patricia of Federal Way, Wash.; two grandchildren, Cory and Mikael, and sisters, Virginia, Mary and Pauline of Wheeling, W. Va.
Funeral services were held on Sept. 5, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Kent, Wash. She was laid to rest at the Tahoma National Cemetery near Black Diamond, Wash.

Patricia M. "Pat" Johnson
Patricia M. "Pat" Johnson, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at her home in Kalispell, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous 15-month battle with colon cancer. She was born June 25, 1934, in Roundup.
Pat "P.J." found her soul mate Myron "POP" and they married on Oct. 9, 1953. They had 51 wonderful years together. They raised three children. She started barbering in the early 1960s at the Immanuel Lutheran Home. Then in 1975, she began her career as a nurses' aide, and received her certification in 1989. She devoted 23 years of care, laughter and compassion to the elderly at Immanuel Lutheran Home before retiring in 1998. Pat was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Pat was an avid golfer, learning in Great Falls at age 13. She won the Labor Day Tournament in 1952, the Kalispell City Tournament in 1957 and the City Championship in 1961. On the Fourth of July 1962, she shot a "hole in one" on the third hole of Buffalo Hills Golf Course.
She spent her retirement years volunteering, traveling, quilting and watching all kinds of sports; but most of all spending quality time with her family.
"We were all blessed to have her in our lives. We will miss her love, laughter and all our special times together. We will see you again in heaven! We love you, mom."
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Randy; a half sister and a half brother.
She is now survived by her husband, Myron Johnson of Kalispell; two daughters, Robyn Ward and her husband, Sean, and Teri Wood and her husband Mike, all of Kalispell. There are four grandchildren, Brianne and Bradyn Ward, and Chris and Randee Wood; a half sister, Linda Waterbury and a half brother, Jim Eckberg, both of California; and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry Stappler officiating. Burial will follow at the Glacier Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Johnson Mortuary Chapel. The family suggests memorials be sent to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 603 South Main St., Kalispell, MT 59901; Immanuel Lutheran Home,185 Crestline Ave., Kalispell, MT 59901; or Hospice, Home Health Options, 175 Commons Loop, Suite 100, Kalispell, MT 59901.
Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Mortuary and Crematory.
