Jesse Waters
Jakob Waters
LEWISTOWN – Jesse Waters and Jakob Waters, infant twins born to Christina and Travis R. Waters on Sept. 5, 2000, at the Central Montana Medical Center, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, and Thursday, Sept. 7, respectively.
Graveside services for Jesse and Jakob Waters will be held at the Beaver Creek cemetery on Monday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. Creel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
John H. Wilson
John H. Wilson rode his beloved Harley Sportster for the last time Aug. 18, 2000. He died Sept. 7 from injuries suffered on that last ride.
He was born June 16, 1930, in Sidney to Florence and Harold Wilson. John attended grade school in Richey and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1949.
John retired from Greyhound in 1992 after 41 years of service. Never idle and missing the motor coaches, he went to work, part time, for his friend at Rimrock Stages. He married
Rose M. Loucas on Dec. 27, 1951. They had three daughters, two of them, Cheri and Wendy, preceded John in death.
Survivors include his wife Rose; his daughter Jonine (Chip) Smith; his grandchildren, Kyle, Parker, and Hayley Smith, and Tyson Kanuit; his sister Joyce Keller; his brother James; several nieces and nephews; and many exceptional friends, all of whom are like family.
Viewing will begin Sunday afternoon at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Justine Wright
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Justine Wright, 97, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in Sheridan Manor.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan. Interment of cremains will be in Kingman, Ariz. Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan is in charge.
Mary F. Balsam
Mary F. Balsam, of Billings, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital. The youngest daughter in a family of 15 children, Mary was born Dec. 8, 1924, to Alferius and Monica Friedt in Billings.
She was raised and educated in Billings, graduating from high school in 1943. She attended the University of Montana and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
She married
Robert Balsam in Billings Feb. 24, 1944.
Mary taught all her children to golf, ski, play bridge and entertain. She had been the ladies club champ at the Hiland’s and was a bowling champion at Jubilee Lanes. She was an avid horse race fan, enjoyed sleigh rides and always lived life to the fullest. The family social director, she was the first to discover the newest fad and always wanted the best for her family. She had a love for young people and was always concerned for others.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; her son Rob, his wife Twyla and their children Andy (Darcy), Robbie and Rhianna, and great grandson Dylan; her daughter Connie Balsam, her husband Mick Mennie and their children, Sean, Rob, Josh and Sarah; and her daughter Janet Bramblett, her husband Tim and their children Becky and Timmy. She is also survived by three brothers and three sisters. Special thanks to Ruth Chapman and Katie Volnek for all their help.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with interment in Mountview cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
James R. Cavanagh
STONY CREEK, N.Y. – James Ross Cavanagh, 68, formerly of Glendive, Mont., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany following a short illness.
A wake service will be at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at the Alexander Funeral Home in Warrensburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church with a Rite of Committal in Warrensburg cemetery.
Madeline Skinner Colliflower
HAYS – Madeline “Si-Siya” Skinner Colliflower, 81, passed away Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, of natural causes at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center in Billings.
Wake will be held Friday, Sept. 8, at the Medicine Bear Lodge in Lodgepole. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Medicine Bear Lodge in Lodgepole, with burial at the Colliflower Family Ranch cemetery. Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook has been entrusted with the arrangements.
She was born Feb. 22, 1919, on the Fort Belknap Reservation to Arthur and Clara Bad Road Skinner.
Madeline was one of the last full blood members of the Gros Ventre tribe.
She married
John E. Colliflower Jr. on May 17, 1941.
Madeline attended schools in Fort Belknap and Chemawa, Ore.
She took pride in watching her children and grandchildren perform at pow wows and rodeos. She loved “looking on” at pow wows, playing bingo, traveling, camping and conversing in her native tongue.
All of her life she was actively involved in community, women’s and cultural issues. She worked steadfastly for the preservation of her language and culture.
In 1961, she gained a step towards achieving civil rights for all Native Americans in the court case Colliflower v. Garland in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
After her case was decided, Congress enacted the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968. Colliflower v. Garland is case law in law schools across the nation.
Madeline was the first women to serve on the Hays/Lodgepole School Board. She also served as the director of the Community Action Program at Fort Belknap. Madeline served as the secretary/treasurer of the Gros Ventre Treaty Committee. She was a founding member of the National Indian Women’s Association and was chosen as the Indian Woman of the Year in 1973. Madeline was also a charter member of the National Indian Council on Aging. She was actively involved in the effort to pass the Indian Child Welfare Act. Madeline was also a Kellogg Foundation Fellow studying socio-economic conditions on state, national and international levels. She served on the Governor’s Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Madeline was also active in the Billings Indian Center.
Most recently, Madeline served as the coordinator for Fort Belknap College’s Learning Lodge Institute, a language preservation program for the two Fort Belknap tribes. She continued to pass on her language to those willing to learn, especially Adrian Main and her great-nephew Terry Brockie.
Madeline is survived by her sister, Hazel Vandall and her brother, Merle Skinner, both of Hays, and her Indian sister, Joyce Red Eagle Tootoosis of Poplar; eight children, Theodore (Pearl) Skinner of Boring, Ore., Janice Hawley of Fort Belknap, Carla (Myron) Brien of Billings, Gladys Colliflower of Billings, John E. (Sybil) Colliflower III of Rocky Boy, Clyde (Marilyn) Colliflower of Washougal, Wash., Elizabeth “Niffer” Colliflower of Manassas, Va., and Kim Colliflower of Hays; 21 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and countless other family and friends across the nation and Canada.
Madeline touched many lives and hearts with her selfless devotion to the needs of others. We will miss her deeply.

Doris Goodman
CODY, Wyo. – Doris M. Sanderson Goodman, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at her home.
Cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held at a later date.
Jeanne Graham
BUFFALO, Wyo. – Jeanne Graham, 73, died Wednesday at her Buffalo home of lung cancer.
Visitiation will be from 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with burial and graveside services at Willow Grove cemetery.
George H. Johnson
GLASGOW – George H. Johnson, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church with burial in Dagmar cemetery. Bell Mortuary in Glasgow is in charge.
Constance Kohler
CLYDE PARK – Constance Ann “Connie” Kohler, 41, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Livingston Memorial Hospital from a pulmonary embolism.
Cremation has taken place at Franzen-Davis Crematory in Livingston. Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at The Great Northern in Whitefish.
Hugh McLuskie
MILLBRAE, Calif. – Hugh McLuskie, 90, formerly of Red Lodge and Bearcreek, Mont., passed away Sept. 5, 2000, of natural causes.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Massa). Survivors include two brothers, Douglas and his wife Lorraine of Missoula and James and wife Lillian of Billings; and a sister, Laverne Baumgartner of Billings.
Mary V. Noble
Mary V. Noble, 96, of Billings, formerly of Grass Range, died Wednesday evening at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings of natural causes. She was born April 3, 1904, in Waverly, Neb. She received her schooling near Scottsbluff, Neb.
In 1923 she was united in marriage to Lewis McMillan in Scottsbluff, and they moved to Montana, settling in the Grass Range area. In 1929 she was united in marriage to Purty Noble in Lewistown. They lived and ranched near Grass Range until his death in 1955. She continued to live in Grass Range until the mid-1990s when she moved to Valley Nursing Home in Billings.
She is survived by three sons, Harold “Bill” McMillan and his wife Dora of Casper, Wyo., Frank “Dick” Noble and his wife Dolores of Grass Range, and Kenneth Noble and his wife Gloria of Helena; one daughter, Carol Perman and her husband Walter of Billings; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mary V. Noble will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to the Grass Range United Methodist Church, the Grass Range First Responders or the Salvation Army of Billings and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
Carolyn June Carl Nunes
Carolyn Nunes passed away at the age of 55 on Sept. 1, 2000, from a stroke. Carolyn was born Dec. 22, 1945, to Joseph Edward “Bud” Carl and Lorraine Flemming Carl.
She was married
to Tom Malmstrom and has two children, Michelle and Todd. Carolyn was later married
to Ron Nunes and has two children, Ronnie and Robert. Carolyn is also survived by her mother, Lorraine Long; brother, Lloyd Jack “Bud” (Cynthia) Carl of Shepherd; sister, Cheryl Edwards; half-brother, Gary Long; half-sister, Patty Sneyd; stepfather, Harley Long; several grandchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father in 1956 and her half-sister, Linda Long.
At her request, she has been cremated. No services will be held.
Norma W. Olson
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Norma W. Olson, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at her Sheridan home.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish, S.D.
Rodney D. Royal
Rodney D. Royal passed away Aug. 30 in the Deaconess Medical Center of cancer.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Billings Praise Center, 516 S. 37th St. Pastor Tony Gonzales will officiate.
Dorothy T. Yonts
BASIN, Wyo. – Dorothy T. Yonts, 79, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis.
Visitation will be one-half hour before the 2 p.m. service on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Powell. Graveside services will be in Crown Hill cemetery. Atwood Family Funeral Directors is in charge.
Rev. Aura Earl ‘A.E.’ Arney
JORDAN – Rev. Aura Earl “A.E.” Arney, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in the Assembly of God Church in Jordan with burial in the family lot of Pioneer cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City is in charge.
Earlene Ida Azure
WOLF POINT – Earlene Ida Azure, 65, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Church with burial in the Greenwood cemetery.

Arnold ‘Bud’ Dinsdale
Arnold “Bud” Dinsdale, 85, of Livingston, passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000.
He was born Aug. 26, 1915 in Red Lodge, a son of Jeff and Jeanette Ouw-ersloot Dins-dale. He moved to the Masa-chita (Sarpy) area in 1917, where he attended grade school. He later moved to Hardin and attended high school until the age of 15, when he began haying with his dad on the Rosebud.
He worked for the OW Ranch on Toulac Creek before spending one year with the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he learned the diesel mechanic trade. After spending time at the CCC Camp, he worked for the Harvey Wilcutt Ranch and later started a pool hall and hamburger stand in Hardin. At this time, he met Louise Fergerson and they were married
on Feb. 10, 1938 in Hardin.
Bud worked at the Holly Sugar Factory for a time, before owning and operating a custom combine business. Bud herded sheep, as well as starting a dry land farming and cattle operation in the Pryor area. In 1956, the family moved to Limestone, where they continued to farm and ranch. In 1963, they moved to a larger ranch near Livingston and in 1969 they moved to Shane Ridge near Columbus, until their retirement in 1982 to Absarokee.
Mrs. Dinsdale died in 1990. Bud remained in Absarokee until 1995, then to Columbus until 1997 and finally to Livingston until the present.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen (Sam) Belling of Poulsbo, Wash.; two sons, Dan (Cathy) of Livingston and Ted (Jodie) of Roberts; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two sisters, Louise Cramer of Vernal, Utah, and Edythe Rice of Lodge Grass; and one brother, Alfred (Betty) Dinsdale of Harlowtown.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
