YOUNTVILLE, Calif. – Ernest J. Harper, Jr., 78, formerly of Lewistown, Mont., died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Creel Funeral Home in Lewistown. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Montana Memorial Gardens.
Gerald D. Jennings
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Gerald D. Jennings, 62, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, on a ranch near Arvada where he was helping a friend.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Ferries Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the viewing.
Ira Shumway Johnson
BURLINGTON, Wyo. – Ira Shumway Johnson, 81, formerly of Thermopolis, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at his Burlington home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Burlington with burial at 3 p.m. at Monument Hill cemetery in Thermopolis.
Elsa Quast Nelson
RICHLAND – Elsa Quast Nelson, 93, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the Opheim Lutheran Church in Opheim. Interment will be in the Lawndale cemetery in Opheim. Bell Mortuary is in charge.
Warren Kenneth Nelson
Warren Kenneth Nelson, 74, of Laurel and formerly of Billings, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 28, 2000, at Evergreen Laurel Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Howe, Neb., the son of Mark and Olive (Prather) Nelson.
Warren graduated from high school in Lincoln, Neb., and served in the Army. He married
Helen Mathias in Lincoln in May of 1952 and moved to Billings to build and work at Northland Steel Co., where he worked for more than 30 years. Helen preceded him in death in 1974.
Warren was the greatest Dad in the world. He was a dedicated, hard worker and a very witty person, who loved Montana, the outdoors and hunting and fishing. He lead a very active life until 1989 when he suffered a severe stroke. He was preceded in death by his three brothers and one sister.
Warren is survived by his daughter, Vicki Nelson Fox and her husband Jerry; and two granddaughters.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
Carl Ostrum
Carl Ostrum, 90, of Billings, formerly of Absarokee, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Beartooth Manor in Columbus. Carl was the last surviving child of his family.
He was born on Butcher Creek near Absarokee, the son of Chris and Eli Bakke Ostrum. Carl was educated at the Butcher Creek School and in Absarokee. He raised sheep near Reed Point before moving to Roscoe where he operated the family ranch on the East Rosebud River. Carl also helped build and was a partner in the Horseshoe Inn for a short time. The inn is now known as the Grizzly Bar.
On Jan. 28, 1933, he married
Firmus Schuyler in Billings. They lived north of Reed Point for three years and then in Roscoe. In 1955, they moved to Billings where he built and operated Sunset Trailer Court, which was the second trailer court in the Billings area. His favorite pastime was to go to the cattle sales at PAYS.
Survivors include two sons, Don (Jeanette) Ostrum of Roscoe and Ray Ostrum of Billings; two daughters, Joyce (Buzz) Stimpson of Rapelje and Karleen (Vaughn) Hague of Billings; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, a sister, his wife and two grandsons.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Absarokee. Interment will follow at the Rosebud cemetery. Arrangements are by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Oliver Lee Roberts
LIVINGSTON – Oliver Lee Roberts, 86, former Park County and Butte resident, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Alta Vista Care Center in Salt Lake City.
Graveside committal services will military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Mountain View cemetery. Family and friends will gather at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 N. Third St., before 1:45 p.m. to proceed to cemetery.
Barbara R. Schmitt
GRESHAM, Ore. – Barbara R. Robinson-Schmitt, 68, formerly of Powell, Wyo., died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2000, in Gresham.
Visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday before the services at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Powell. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home in Powell is in charge.
Charles ‘Pete’ Steelman
GREYBULL, Wyo. – Charles C. “Pete” Steelman, 84, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing Home.
Visitation will be held at 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the Atwood Family Funeral Chapel. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Burlington cemetery in Burlington.
Evelyn Ruth Torgerson
Evelyn Ruth Torgerson died Thursday morning, Sept. 28, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Home where she had been a resident for the past nine years. at the age of 93 years.
Evelyn was born Oct. 23, 1906, in Minneapolis to Nels and Julia Erlandson. The family moved to North Dakota when she was two years old. She attended a rural school and then graduated from Almont (N.D.) High School in 1924. She taught school for 37 years in North Dakota and in Montana. She attended several colleges but received her B.A. in Billings at the then-Eastern Montana College in 1957. Evelyn retired in June of 1969.
Evelyn married
Arnold Torgerson on Feb. 2, 1946, in Livingston, and they made their home in Billings. After retiring, she and Arnold spent six months of every year in Mesa, Ariz. Evelyn and Arnold loved to travel and visited all of Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and most of the United States. Arnold preceded her in death on May 17, 1984.
Evelyn was a member of American Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, VFW Auxiliary and Retired Teachers Organization. She loved to travel, to work crossword puzzles and she was an excellent card player. Such a sociable person – all who knew Evelyn loved her dearly.
Evelyn is survived by three sisters-in-law, Thelma Olin, Louise Torgerson and Marlene Christofferson; two nieces, Bonnee Ritz and Elaine Holder; two nephews, Warren Stuart and Lloyd Erlandson, and her special friend, Lois Irion and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at American Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be at Smith Downtown Chapel, Saturday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday noon to 8 p.m. and prior to services on Monday at the Church. Dale Wight
TERRY – Dale Wight, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at his home.
Military graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in the family lot at the Prairie County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

WOLF POINT – Harry Atkinson, 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Faith Home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Greenwood cemetery. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Home. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge.
Robert Verne Broadbent, MD

CODY, Wyo. – “Bob” or “Doc” Broadbent passed away in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings on Sept. 26, 2000, from injuries sustained from a horseback riding accident. As an avid outdoorsman, he was enjoying the fall colors in the Absaroka Mountains when the accident occurred.
He was born in Long Beach, Calif., to Milton and Helen Broadbent. Bob completed his primary schooling in southern California, did his undergraduate studies at UC Davis and received his doctorate of medical science from USC.
He honorably served his country in both WWII and the Korean conflict. His civic contributions included Nevada State Legislature, Nevada Fish and Game Commission, and president of the Washoe County Medical Society of Reno, Nev. In addition, he was an official scorer for the Boone and Crockett Club and a member of the Grand Slam Club.
He began his professional medical career in Reno as a family practitioner and general surgeon in 1954. In 1979, Bob became a board certified diagnostic radiologist at UC Davis, and continued service as clinical professor of radiology until 1980. He became chief radiologist at Veterans Administration Hospital in Reno, and then became director of radiological services at Sparks Family Hospital until 1989; shortly thereafter he became director of radiology at Powell Hospital in Wyoming. He retired in 1995.
In December 1954, Bob married
Catherine “Kay” Gaughan. Born to this union were two sons, Lance and Jeffrey and daughter Allison. Bob married
Joan Keene in November 1986 and they moved to Cody, Wyo., in 1989, where he could fulfill his lifelong dream of being a cowboy.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman. His activities included ski racing on the national senior circuit, riding his Harley, hunting, fly fishing, riding in reining horse competitions, water skiing, and ranching. He was especially proud of his performance horses and Gelbvieh cattle.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Milton and Helen Broadbent, and Catherine Broadbent. Survived by wife Joan; son Lance (Amy) of Woodbury, Minn., son Jeffrey of Los Gatos, Calif.; daughter Allison Betz (Bard) and grandchildren Lee, Evan and Libby Broadbent and Kristina Betz; stepchildren Dana Solomon, (Marla) of Manteca, Calif., Jane Miller, (Richard) and Laura Keene, both of Powell; and grandchildren Matthew and Heather Solomon, and Jonathan and Elizabeth Miller.

Iris M. Flood
RIVERTON, Wyo. – Iris M. Flood of Riverton died Wednesday, Sept 27, 2000, at Riverton Memorial Hospital. She was 74 years old.
At her request, no services will be held and cremation has been arranged. Iris M. Gebo (Flood) was born Aug 18, 1926, in Billings, the daughter of Elmer Lee Gebo and Thelma Dolores (Dunsworth) Gebo.
She was a graduate of Park City High School in Park City, Mont. In the early years she worked for KGHL in Billings and as a beet clerk for Great Western Sugar Co.
On Oct. 31, 1944, she married
Samuel B. Flood in Billings. He preceded her in death in 1955. She had lived in Riverton since 1987, making her home at the Owl Creek Apartments.
Prior to moving to Riverton, she lived in Lovell where she owned and operated several car dealerships with her husband and worked as bookkeeper in the businesses. They were also involved in agriculture, owning a breeding stock farm. Mrs. Flood judged hogs at fairs and the family was known for the quality swine breeding stock.
She was a member of the Montana Pork Producers, Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekahs and Job’s Daughters.
Survivors include a son, Tom Flood and his wife Veronica of Lovell; daughter Mary Neil and her husband Curtis of Riverton; six grandchildren, Kelly Derryberry and husband Jeff of Gillette, Tommy Flood and wife Jessica of Lovell, Jeff Neil and wife Natalie of Salt Lake City, Utah, Marla Woods and husband Tim of Cody, Dana Flint and husband Shane of Sioux City, Iowa, AMS2 Samuel Neil in the United States Navy; and four great grandchildren.
In addition, to her husband, Mrs. Flood was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marian Frank of Seattle; her grandparents, Melvin and Julia Dunsworth of Park City, and a nephew, Sgt. Harold Frank of Seattle.

Glenn D. Howard
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Glenn D. Howard, 79 of St. George, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, in St. George.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 2, at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett, Idaho. Cremation will be followed with interment in the Emmett cemetery.
Glenn was born in Emmett to Robert J. and Alta (Sisler) Howard on April 24, 1921. He married
his high school sweetheart Lavon Heap on July 5, 1939. She preceded Glenn in death in June, 1996.
Glenn grew up in Emmett and graduated from Emmett High School. During WWII, he enlisted in the Navy, serving stateside in San Diego and at the Great Lakes base. Returning home from the Navy, Glenn worked as a plumber in the Emmett and Boise, Idaho, area for several years.
In 1954, the family moved to Livingston, Mont., where Glenn worked for Downer Lumber Co., and later for Western Plumbing and Heating. Glenn worked for Montana Power in their Livingston service department from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. In 1997, following the death of his wife, Lavon, in 1996, he moved to Page, Ariz., to live with daughter, Jean. Glenn moved to St. George to become a resident of the Meadows Retirement Community in 1999.
He had a genuine love of the outdoors which included gardening, hunting and fishing. One of his favorite pastimes was dancing with Lavon. They would glide across the floor, and seemed to float with the music. Always a gentleman, Glenn will be remembered as a strong, handsome, gentle and quiet man. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who found his greatest enjoyment in being with his family and friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean and (Ronald) Hockins of Page, and Kay Howard of Palmer, Alaska; two grandchildren, Teri Berntsen and Curtis Mittelstedter and three great grandchildren; a sister, Frances of Boise; three brothers, Walter of Emmett and Emory and Quentin of Boise.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a daughter and three grandchildren.
