Sharon Ann Conner
Sharon Ann Conner, 55, a loving mother and daughter, died Aug. 9, 2000, at her home.
She was born in Miles City to Francis and Alice Conner on Sept. 29, 1944. Sharon attended nursing school in Helena and practiced nursing for over 35 years. She lost her daughter, Brittany, at age 11, to cancer and was also taking care of her mother. She enjoyed garage sales and arts and crafts. Sharon was well known in the medical community for her compassionate and caring nursing skills.
Sharon is survived by her mother, Alice Conner; four brothers, Francis Conner, Joe Conner, Allen Conner and Leo Conner; two sisters, Carolyn Lafromboise and Marguerite Boyd Hernandez and daughter, Pamela Conner. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will take place 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Terrace Gardens cemetery.
Harold Gordon ‘Gabby’ Green
MILES CITY – Harold Gordon “Gabby” Green, age 78, of Miles City, formerly of Hardin, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City following a brief illness.
Gabby was born on July 17, 1922, in Ashland, the son of Clifton and Grace (Strand) Green. He attended schools at Lodge Grass, St. Labre Mission, Hardin, and graduated from Forsyth High School. He attended Montana State University for two years and then joined the Navy soon after Pearl Harbor.
As a pilot in Naval Aviation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant and flew naval combat aircraft including the Banshee, Panther and Cougar, all single-place fighter jets. He became proficient at aircraft carrier takeoffs and landings and flew off of the Carrier USS Midway in the South Pacific. He was a commanding officer on Majuro Island in the Pacific for two years and then returned to the United States to become a flight instructor.
He married
Betty Burks in 1952 and settled in Lodge Grass, where he owned a business in propane sales and a movie theater. He also dusted crops and served a term as mayor. He moved his family to Hardin in 1963, where they owned and operated the two movie theaters for many years.
Following a divorce, he moved to Alaska and worked several years as a bushpilot, flying cargo and passengers to remote areas of the state.
In his early years, he was an outstanding baseball player. One of the coaches called him “Gabby, ” as a reference to famous big league catcher Gabby Hartnett, and the name stuck for the rest of his life.
He has lived in recent years at the Eagles Manor in Miles City, enjoying his many friends there, and entertaining all with his stories and wit.
He is survived by a son, Michael Green of Huntley Project; two daughters, Kellie Green Hall of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Sanna Propp of Burbank, Calif.; one sister, Sanna Green of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Kirk Green of Ashland; five grandchildren, Sean Green, Stacey Brown and Ryan, Jayme and Conner Hall, one great-grandchild, Ryleigh Doto, and many nieces, nephews and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brian Green; two brothers, Clifton Jr. “Pistol” and Mike Green; and a sister, Jeanette O’Connor.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Eagles Manor or a charity of their choice.
Edwin C. Gussiaas
CARRINGTON, N.D. – Edwin Clarence Gussiass was born Feb. 3, 1920, the son of Andrev and Thea (Edwardson) Gussisas, in Nordmore Township where he grew up and attended school. He was baptized and confirmed at Kvernes Lutheran Church.
Edwin served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in France. On Nov. 6, 1947, he was united in marriage to Margaret Lillian Schroeder at Kensal. They farmed near Carrington. Margaret died Oct. 8, 1998.
Edwin enjoyed farming, gardening, raising flowers, his chickens, and his grandchildren. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the American Legion John Raymond O’Hara Post 25, and the VFW McCreary-Bonderud Post 3524, all of Carrington.
Edwin C. Gussiaas died on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his home in Carrington at the age of 80 years.
He is survived by: his daughter, Connie (Lowell) Medhus of Hardin, Mont.; three granddaughters, Michelle (Thomas) Certalic of Hardin, Crystal Sorenson of Billings and Heather Sorenson of Hardin; one grandson, Michael Medhus of Hardin; a special nephew, James Topp of Soldotna, Alaska; two brothers, Henry (Phyllis) Gussiaas of Carrington and Luverne (Beatrice) Gussiaas of New Rockford; five sisters, Olga Landon, Thelma Landon, Norma Gussiaas and Judy (Irwin) Swanson, all of Carrington, and Mabel (Daris) Bittner of Cathay; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Margaret; his parents; five brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at the Grace Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14. Interment will be in the Carrington cemetery with military honors.
Gayle Adel Hartley
POWELL, Wyo. – Gayle Adel Hartley, 83, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Powell Nursing Home following a long illness.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. Ballard Funeral Home of Cody is in charge.
Edna Gertrude Jacobson
BOZEMAN – Edna Gertrude Jacobson, 84, passed away on Aug. 9, 2000, at the Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman. She was born on Nov. 14, 1915, at a homestead on Bridger Creek in Sweet Grass County, the daughter of Ellen and James Peter-sen.
Edna attended school in Springdale and Big Timber, graduating from Sweet Grass County High School. She was married
to Sivert (Sam) Jacobson on Dec. 24, 1936, at Big Timber. They lived in many different places until settling in Bozeman in 1952. She was a homemaker and self-employed partner in the family trucking business. She belonged to the Gallatin Valley Snowmobile Association.
Edna’s greatest joy was time spent exploring the back roads, mountain trails, and slopes with her best friend and husband, her “Sam” and son, Don and his family or friends. They found God’s serenity and beauty on foot, horseback, four-wheeler, snowmobiles, motorcycles or camping. Her vantage point, the last couple of years, has been in the car with Sam, touring the many areas they enjoyed. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were bright spots in her life. over 63 happy years, enjoying their work, family and hobbies.
Edna is survived by her husband, Sivert (Sam); son, Donald W. Jacobson Sr. and his wife, Kay of Billings; sisters, Alice Snyder, Independence, Mo., and Shirley Lap, Big Timber; brother, Al Rich, Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her parents and a grandson, David Wayne Jacobson, preceded her in death.
A memorial service wilt be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Bozeman. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Old Highway 10. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 70 E Lake Street, Chicago, IL 60601-9971.
Ray Alfred Murray
Ray Alfred Murray, 91, of Billings, formerly of Lewistown, died Aug. 10, 2000, at St. John’s Nursing Home of natural causes. He was born Oct. 31, 1908, in Penalosa, Kan., to Earl Edward Murray and Elmo Justina Smail Murray, and arrived with them at a homestead claim on Arrow Creek at the age of 10 months.
He married
Viola Lorretta Martin on Sept. 12, 1942, in Stanford.
One of Montana’s true pioneers of the early 20th century, he played in the first Sunday baseball leagues, drove children to county school in an open-air bus drawn by horses, and raised cattle and wheat while the open skies were yet unmarked by jet streams and combustion flumes.
In 1967, he moved his family to Lewistown to expand the accounting business he had established on the ranch.
He is survived by his wife, Viola of Billings; three children, Earl of Fort Collins, Colo., Karen Kenney of Billings, and John of Great Falls; together with nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, and Funeral Mass celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Lewistown. Rite of Committal will be in the Calvary cemetery in Lewistown. Memorials may be directed to the Shrine Crippled Children’s Hospital, 911 W. St., Spokane, WA 99204. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist of Billings and Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown have charge of arrangements.
Daniel Scott Philip
BIG TIMBER – Daniel Scott Philip passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at 4:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Medical Center surrounded by the people who loved him.
Dan was born to Maude Powell and Roderick Philip on Dec. 30, 1943, at Lander, Wyo.
He grew up mainly in South Dakota and served in the military from May 1964 to February 1967. He was an Indian firefighter, worked construction and spent many years tending bar in the Billings area. He moved to Big Timber in 1989 and tended bar until January 1999 when he became unable to work.
He was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux, Eagle Butte, S.D., and a member of the American Legion Post No. 19 of Big Timber.
He is survived by two sons, Daniel Scott and James Polen; five grandchildren; one sister, Virginia S. Philip; one brother, Roderick Philip of Billings; two aunts, Mary Powell LeBeau and Jackie Philip Means of Rapid City, S.D.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; also his “special little girls, ” Samantha and Shannon Renskers.
He wanted to thank all of his friends and relatives and a “special thank you” for cousins Nancy and Steven, Judy and Jenny, Curtis and Sally for coming to see him and friends Carol and Glenn and Jan and Bob for stopping by. It meant a great deal to him that people cared.

Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Schell
Kathy Schell, 61, of Billings, died on Aug. 10, 2000. She was born Aug. 16, 1938, the daughter of Forest and Ruth (Hedges) Roby. As a youth, Kathy lived in various Western states. She graduated from Ekalaka High School in 1956. Kathy was united in marriage to Cliff Schell in the late summer of 1958, in Fort Worth, Texas.
She is survived by her husband, Cliff; daughters, Tenley Strong, Tammy (Jeff) Muri, Tara (Kevin) Mahoney; son, Roche (Kathy) Schell; and seven grandchildren, Lauren, Lexi, Cameron, Callie, Jase, Danielle, and Hannah, all of Billings.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents; and two brothers, Paul and Judd Roby.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 15, at Faith Chapel on Broadwater and Shiloh. Reception to follow.
With her eyes on Jesus she finished the race marked out for her with perseverance and courage.

Joanne Stops
CROW AGENCY – Joanne G. Stops, 71, of Crow Agency, passed away Friday Aug. 11, 2000, in the Billings Deaconess Medical Center.
She was born July 23, 1929, in Elbowoods, N.D., a daughter of Alex and Mary Benson Sage. She grew up and attended schools in North Dakota.
Joanne moved to the Crow Agency area in 1950 and married
Roger Stops on March 3, 1954. The couple made their home throughout the United States before settling in Crow Agency. Mr. Stops died in 1991.
She was a member of the Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother, who loved to take walks, dance and sing.
Joanne was preceded in death by two daughter, Frances Faye and Laura Renita; one son, Roger Wayne; four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (John Paul) Other Medicine and Christina (Elmer) Hill of Crow Agency; two adopted daughters, Samantha (A.J.) Broken Rope of Hardin and Valerie Stops of Crow Agency; three adopted sons, Ron (Muriel) Holt of Billings, Clinton (Margaret) Stops of Crow Agency and Mervin (Rebecca) White of Wyola; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews from North Dakota, Wyoming, Texas and the Crow Agency area.
Funeral services will be held 11 p.m. Monday in the Crow Agency First Crow Indian Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Custer Battlefield National cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Terrill S. Tollefson
BIG TIMBER – Terrill S. Tollefson, 76, of Big Timber, passed away Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at the Pioneer Nursing Home.
He was born Feb. 24, 1924, the only child of Gustav and Sarah (Skibstad) Tollefson in Billings.
Terrill married
Karen S. Malde on Dec. 4, 1951, in Billings. He was a lifelong rancher on the family homestead northeast of Big Timber. He was a member of the Big Timber Lutheran Church, a member of the Farm Bureau, ASCS, and the Community Development Organization.
He enjoyed boating, water skiing, fishing at the ranch pond, and visiting with friends. In later years the most enjoyable times were spent with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen and one granddaughter, Jodi.
Survivors include four daughters: Sharon and Doug Lasich of Twin Bridges; Sigrid Laubach of Reed Point; Evelyn and Bill Langford of Big Timber; and Linda Tollefson and Mike Turley of Billings; two sons, Arnold and Kathy Tollefson of Fort Laramie, Wyo., and Torn Tollefson of Big Timber; grandchildren, Shawn and Tye Lasich, Karla Laubach, Kari and Nate Hammond, Kathy Laubach and Billy and Benjamin Langford, Ty and Tory Riter and numerous relatives in Norway.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14, at the Big Timber Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Holmlund officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery. Lowry Funeral Home arranged the services.
Clarence W. Westburg Sr.
LEWISTOWN – Clarence W. Westburg Sr., 87, of Lewistown, died Friday in the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center of natural causes.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church. Cremation and inurnment have taken place. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge.
Ethel Louise Wolff
GLENDIVE – Ethel Louise Wolff, age 81, of Glendive, died on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug, 13, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Rite of Committal will be in the Dawson County cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Ethel was born on Jan. 29, 1919, in Genoa, Wis., the daughter of Theodore Philip and Lena Zepherina (Dalsasso) Stortz. She received her early education in rural Dawson County Schools and graduated from Dawson County High School in 1935. Ethel graduated from the College of Education in Great Falls in 1937. On July 25, 1944, Ethel married
Addis Wolff in Circle. Ethel was a teacher in rural and elementary schools.
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Near and Farm Homemaker Club, and was a member of the St. Francis Xavier’s Altar Society in Circle.
Ethel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Her strong faith was a wonderful example to her family and gave her peace. We will miss her warm smile, her generosity and loving nature, but most of all the special affection she and Addis shared that made us laugh and warmed our hearts.
Survivors include her husband, Addis, of Glendive; one son, Jim Wolff and his wife, Jan of Lindsay; three daughters, Ellen Rothman and her husband, Michael of Skokie, Ill., Anne Opp and her husband, Rick of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Cathy Miller and her husband, Dean of Glendive; two brothers, George Stortz of Lindsay, and Bob Stortz and his wife, Bev of Glendive; 11 grandchildren, Cory, Jenny and Pete Wolff; Colin (Rothman) Quade and her husband, Ron and Nate Rothman; Jon, Jeff and Joel Opp; and Josh, Leah and Jamey Dinardi, and numerous nieces and nephews.
